Leptonic probes of alternative left-right symmetric models

We explore constraints on the parameter space of the alternative left-right model originating from the leptonic sector. Our analyses focuses on both lepton-flavor-conserving observables, particularly the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, and lepton-flavor-violating processes like μ → e γ decay and μ − e conversions in nuclei. While contributions to the anomalous magnetic moment fall below the measured values at 2 σ , current and future experimental sensitivities to flavor-violating branching rations of the Standard Model leptons are expected to impose lower bounds on the mass of the peculiar S U ( 2 ) R gauge boson of the model. This provides complementary constraints relative to existing limits, which are indirect and derived from collider bounds on the mass of the associated neutral gauge boson Z ′ . Measurement of the inelasticity distribution of neutrino-nucleon interactions for 80 GeV

We report a study of the inelasticity distribution in the scattering of neutrinos of energy 80–560 GeV off nucleons. Using atmospheric muon neutrinos detected in IceCube’s sub-array DeepCore during 2012–2021, we fit the observed inelasticity in the data to a parameterized expectation and extract the values that describe it best. Finally, we compare the results to predictions from various combinations of perturbative QCD calculations and atmospheric neutrino flux models.

Search for resonance-enhanced C P and angular asymmetries in the Λ c + → p μ + μ − decay at LHCb

The first measurement of the C P asymmetry of the decay rate ( A C P ) and the C P average ( Σ A FB ) and C P asymmetry ( Δ A FB ) of the forward-backward asymmetry in the muon system of Λ c + → p μ + μ − decays is reported. The measurement is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions, recorded by the LHCb experiment from 2016 to 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, which corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 5.4 fb − 1 . The asymmetries are measured in two regions of dimuon mass near the ϕ -meson mass peak. The dimuon-mass integrated results are A C P = ( − 1.1 ± 4.0 ± 0.5 ) % , Σ A FB = ( 3.9 ± 4.0 ± 0.6 ) % , Δ A FB = ( 3.1 ± 4.0 ± 0.4 ) % , where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. The results are consistent with the conservation of C P symmetry and the Standard Model expectations. © 2025 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2025 CERN

Time-Integrated Neutrino Source Searches with 10 Years of IceCube Data

This Letter presents the results from pointlike neutrino source searches using ten years of IceCube data collected between April 6, 2008 and July 10, 2018. We evaluate the significance of an astrophysical signal from a pointlike source looking for an excess of clustered neutrino events with energies typically above ~1 TeV among the background of atmospheric muons and neutrinos. We perform a full-sky scan, a search within a selected source catalog, a catalog population study, and three stacked Galactic catalog searches. The most significant point in the northern hemisphere from scanning the sky is coincident with the Seyfert II galaxy NGC 1068, which was included in the source catalog search. The excess at the coordinates of NGC 1068 is inconsistent with background expectations at the level of 2.9σ after accounting for statistical trials from the entire catalog. The combination of this result along with excesses observed at the coordinates of three other sources, including TXS 0506+056, suggests that, collectively, correlations with sources in the northern catalog are inconsistent with background at 3.3σ significance. The southern catalog is consistent with background. Finally these results, all based on searches for a cumulative neutrino signal integrated over the 10 years of available data, motivate further study of these and similar sources, including time-dependent analyses, multimessenger correlations, and the possibility of stronger evidence with coming upgrades to the detector.

Octupolar versus Néel Order in Cubic 5d 2 Double Perovskites

We report time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy and neutron and x-ray diffraction studies of the 5 d 2 double perovskite magnets, Ba 2 M OsO 6 ( M = Zn , Mg , Ca ). We find that these materials host antiferromagnetically coupled 5 d 2 Os 6 + ions decorating a face-centered cubic (fcc) lattice and are found to remain cubic down to the lowest temperatures. They all exhibit thermodynamic anomalies consistent with a single phase transition at a temperature T * , and a gapped magnetic excitation spectrum with spectral weight concentrated at wave vectors typical of type-I antiferromagnetic orders. However, while muon spin resonance experiments show clear evidence for time-reversal symmetry breaking below T * , we observe no corresponding magnetic Bragg scattering signal. These results are shown to be consistent with ferro-octupolar symmetry breaking below T * , and are discussed in the context of other 5 d double perovskite magnets and theories of exotic orders driven by multipolar interactions.

Quantum Critical Point in the Itinerant Ferromagnet Ni 1– x Rh x

In this paper, we report a chemical substitution-induced ferromagnetic quantum critical point in polycrystalline Ni 1– x Rh x alloys. Through magnetization and muon spin relaxation measurements, we show that the ferromagnetic ordering temperature is suppressed continuously to zero at $x_{\text{crit}}$ = 0.375 while the magnetic volume fraction remains 100% up to $x_{\text{crit}}$, pointing to a second order transition. Non-Fermi liquid behavior is observed close to $x_{\text{crit}}$, where the electronic specific heat Cel/T diverges logarithmically, while immediately above $x_{\text{crit}}$ the volume thermal expansion coefficient $\textit{αV/T}$ and the Grüneisen ratio $Γ = α_V/C_{\text{el}}$ both diverge logarithmically in the low temperature limit, further indication of a ferromagnetic quantum critical point in Ni 1– x Rh x .

High-Statistics Measurement of Neutrino Quasielasticlike Scattering at 6 GeV on a Hydrocarbon Target

We measure neutrino charged-current quasielasticlike scattering on hydrocarbon at high statistics using the wideband Neutrinos at the Main Injector beam with neutrino energy peaked at 6 GeV. The double-differential cross section is reported in terms of muon longitudinal ( p ∥ ) and transverse ( p ⊥ ) momentum. Cross section contours versus lepton momentum components are approximately described by a conventional generator-based simulation, however, discrepancies are observed for transverse momenta above 0.5 GeV / c for longitudinal momentum ranges 3–5 and 9 – 20 GeV / c . The single differential cross section versus momentum transfer squared ( d σ / d Q QE 2 ) is measured over a four-decade range of Q 2 that extends to 10 GeV 2 . The cross section turnover and falloff in the Q 2 range 0.3 – 10 GeV 2 is not fully reproduced by generator predictions that rely on dipole form factors. Our measurement probes the axial-vector content of the hadronic current and complements the electromagnetic form factor data obtained using electron-nucleon elastic scattering. These results help oscillation experiments because they probe the importance of various correlations and final-state interaction effects within the nucleus, which have different effects on the visible energy in detectors.

Constraints on the $\chi_\mathrm{c1}$ versus $\chi_\mathrm{c2}$ Polarizations in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 8 TeV

The polarizations of promptly produced χc1 and χc2 mesons are studied using data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC, in proton-proton collisions at s=8 TeV. The χc states are reconstructed via their radiative decays χc→J/ψγ, with the photons being measured through conversions to e+e−, which allows the two states to be well resolved. The polarizations are measured in the helicity frame, through the analysis of the χc2 to χc1 yield ratio as a function of the polar or azimuthal angle of the positive muon emitted in the J/ψ→μ+μ- decay, in three bins of J/ψ transverse momentum. While no differences are seen between the two states in terms of azimuthal decay angle distributions, they are observed to have significantly different polar anisotropies. The measurement favors a scenario where at least one of the two states is strongly polarized along the helicity quantization axis, in agreement with nonrelativistic quantum chromodynamics predictions. This is the first measurement of significantly polarized quarkonia produced at high transverse momentum.

Measurement of the Jet Mass Distribution and Top Quark Mass in Hadronic Decays of Boosted Top Quarks in $pp$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ TeV

A measurement is reported of the jet mass distribution in hadronic decays of boosted top quarks produced in pp collisions at s=13 TeV. The data were collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb-1. The measurement is performed in the lepton+jets channel of tt¯ events, where the lepton is an electron or muon. The products of the hadronic top quark decay t→bW→bqq¯′ are reconstructed as a single jet with transverse momentum larger than 400 GeV. The tt¯ cross section as a function of the jet mass is unfolded at the particle level and used to extract a value of the top quark mass of 172.6±2.5 GeV. A novel jet reconstruction technique is used for the first time at the LHC, which improves the precision by a factor of 3 relative to an earlier measurement. This highlights the potential of measurements using boosted top quarks, where the new technique will enable future precision measurements.

Absolute Magnetometry with He3

We report development of a highly accurate (parts per billion) absolute magnetometer based on 3He NMR. Optical pumping polarizes the spins, long coherence times provide high sensitivity, and the 3He electron shell effectively isolates the nuclear spin providing accuracy limited only by corrections including materials, sample shape, and magnetization. Our magnetometer was used to confirm calibration, to 32 ppb, of the magnetic-field sensors used in recent measurements of the muon magnetic moment anomaly g-2, which differs from the standard model by 2.4 ppm. With independent determination of the magnetic moment of 3He, this work will lead the way to a new absolute magnetometry standard.

Using uniaxial stress to probe the relationship between competing superconducting states in a cuprate with spin-stripe order

In this work, we report muon spin rotation and magnetic susceptibility experiments on in-plane stress effects on the static spin-stripe order and superconductivity in the cuprate system La 2-x Ba x CuO 4 with x = 0.115. An extremely low uniaxial stress of ~0.1 GPa induces a substantial decrease in the magnetic volume fraction and a dramatic rise in the onset of 3D superconductivity, from ~10 to 32 K; however, the onset of at-least-2D superconductivity is much less sensitive to stress. These results show not only that large-volume-fraction spin-stripe order is anti-correlated with 3D superconducting (SC) coherence, but also that these states are energetically very finely balanced. Moreover, the onset temperatures of 3D superconductivity and spin-stripe order are very similar in the large stress regime. Furthermore, these results strongly suggest a similar pairing mechanism for spin-stripe order, the spatially-modulated 2D and uniform 3D SC orders, imposing an important constraint on theoretical models.

Characteristics of the Diffuse Astrophysical Electron and Tau Neutrino Flux with Six Years of IceCube High Energy Cascade Data

In this work, we report on the first measurement of the astrophysical neutrino flux using particle showers (cascades) in IceCube data from 2010-2015. Assuming standard oscillations, the astrophysical neutrinos in this dedicated cascade sample are dominated (~90%) by electron and tau flavors. The flux, observed in the sensitive energy range from 16 TeV to 2.6 PeV, is consistent with a single power-law model as expected from Fermi-type acceleration of high energy particles at astrophysical sources. We find the flux spectral index to be γ=2.53±0.07 and a flux normalization for each neutrino flavor of $\phi$ astro =1.66$_{-0.27}^{+0.25}$ at E 0 =100 TeV, in agreement with IceCube's complementary muon neutrino results and with all-neutrino flavor fit results. In the measured energy range we reject spectral indices γ≤2.28 at ≥3σ significance level. Because of high neutrino energy resolution and low atmospheric neutrino backgrounds, this analysis provides the most detailed characterization of the neutrino flux at energies below ~100 TeV compared to previous IceCube results. Results from fits assuming more complex neutrino flux models suggest a flux softening at high energies and a flux hardening at low energies (p value ≥0.06). The sizable and smooth flux measured below ~100 TeV remains a puzzle. In order to not violate the isotropic diffuse gamma-ray background as measured by the Fermi Large Area Telescope, it suggests the existence of astrophysical neutrino sources characterized by dense environments which are opaque to gamma rays.

Observation of the Production of Three Massive Gauge Bosons at $\sqrt {s}$ =13 TeV

The first observation is reported of the combined production of three massive gauge bosons (VVV with V=W, Z) in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The analysis is based on a data sample recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb-1. The searches for individual WWW, WWZ, WZZ, and ZZZ production are performed in final states with three, four, five, and six leptons (electrons or muons), or with two same-sign leptons plus one or two jets. The observed (expected) significance of the combined VVV production signal is 5.7 (5.9) standard deviations and the corresponding measured cross section relative to the standard model prediction is 1.02-0.23+0.26. The significances of the individual WWW and WWZ production are 3.3 and 3.4 standard deviations, respectively. Measured production cross sections for the individual triboson processes are also reported.

Observation of Forward Neutron Multiplicity Dependence of Dimuon Acoplanarity in Ultraperipheral Pb-Pb Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

The first measurement of the dependence of $γγ → μ^+μ^–$ production on the multiplicity of neutrons emitted very close to the beam direction in ultraperipheral heavy ion collisions is reported. Data for lead-lead interactions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV, with an integrated luminosity of approximately 1.5 nb –1 , are collected using the CMS detector at the LHC. The azimuthal correlations between the two muons in the invariant mass region 8 < $m_{μμ}$ < 60 GeV are extracted for events including 0, 1, or at least 2 neutrons detected in the forward pseudorapidity range |η| > 8.3. The back-to-back correlation structure from leading-order photon-photon scattering is found to be significantly broader for events with a larger number of emitted neutrons from each nucleus, corresponding to interactions with a smaller impact parameter. This observation provides a data-driven demonstration that the average transverse momentum of photons emitted from relativistic heavy ions has an impact parameter dependence. These results provide new constraints on models of photon-induced interactions in ultraperipheral collisions. They also provide a baseline to search for possible final-state effects on lepton pairs caused by traversing a quark-gluon plasma produced in hadronic heavy ion collisions.

Probing Heavy Majorana Neutrinos and the Weinberg Operator through Vector Boson Fusion Processes in Proton-Proton Collisions at s = 13 TeV

The first search exploiting the vector boson fusion process to probe heavy Majorana neutrinos and the Weinberg operator at the LHC is presented. The search is performed in the same-sign dimuon final state using a proton-proton collision dataset recorded at s = 13 TeV , collected with the CMS detector and corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 . The results are found to agree with the predictions of the standard model. For heavy Majorana neutrinos, constraints on the squared mixing element between the muon and the heavy neutrino are derived in the heavy neutrino mass range 50 GeV–25 TeV; for masses above 650 GeV these are the most stringent constraints from searches at the LHC to date. A first test of the Weinberg operator at colliders provides an observed upper limit at 95% confidence level on the effective $μμ$ Majorana neutrino mass of 10.8 GeV.

First Measurement of the Michel Parameter ξ ' in the τ - → μ - ν ¯ μ ν τ Decay at Belle

We report the first measurement of the Michel parameter ξ' in the $\tau$ - →μ - ⁢ $\overline{v}$ μ ⁢v $\tau$ decay with a new method proposed just recently. The measurement is based on the reconstruction of the $\tau$ - →μ -⁢ $\overline{v}$ μ v $\tau$ events with subsequent muon decay in flight in the Belle central drift chamber. The analyzed data sample of 988 fb -1 collected by the Belle detector corresponds to approximately 912×10 6 $\tau$ + ⁢$\tau$ - pairs. We measure ξ'=0.22±0.94⁢(stat)±0.42⁢(syst), which is in agreement with the standard model prediction of ξ' =1. Statistical uncertainty dominates in this study, being a limiting factor, while systematic uncertainty is well under control. Our analysis proved the practicability of this promising method and its prospects for further precise measurement in future experiments.

Measurement of the J / ψ Polarization with Respect to the Event Plane in Pb-Pb Collisions at the LHC

We study the polarization of inclusive J/ψ produced in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{^sNN}$ = 5.02 TeV at the LHC in the dimuon channel, via the measurement of the angular distribution of its decay products. We perform the study in the rapidity region 2.5 < y < 4, for three transverse momentum intervals (2 < p T < 4, 4 < p T < 6, 6 < p T < 10 GeV/c) and as a function of the centrality of the collision for 2 < p T < 6 GeV/c. For the first time, the polarization is measured with respect to the event plane of the collision, by considering the angle between the positive-charge decay muon in the J/ψ rest frame and the axis perpendicular to the event-plane vector in the laboratory system. A small transverse polarization is measured, with a significance reaching 3.9σ at low p T and for intermediate centrality values. The polarization could be connected with the behavior of the quark-gluon plasma, formed in Pb-Pb collisions, as a rotating fluid with large vorticity, as well as with the existence of a strong magnetic field in the early stage of its formation.

Test of Light-Lepton Universality in the Rates of Inclusive Semileptonic B-Meson Decays at Belle II

We present the first measurement of the ratio of branching fractions of inclusive semileptonic B -meson decays, R ( X e / μ ) = B ( B → X e ν ) / B ( B → X μ ν ) , a precision test of electron-muon universality, using data corresponding to 189 fb - 1 from electron-positron collisions collected with the Belle II detector. In events where the partner B meson is fully reconstructed, we use fits to the lepton momentum spectra above 1.3 GeV / c to obtain R ( X e / μ ) = 1.007 ± 0.009 ( stat ) ± 0.019 ( syst ) , which is the most precise lepton-universality test of its kind and agrees with the standard-model expectation.
