Balancing Charge Transfer and Frenkel Exciton Coupling Leads to Excimer Formation in Molecular Dimers: Implications for Singlet Fission

Photoexcitation of molecular chromophore aggregates can form excimer states that play a significant role in photophysical processes such as charge and energy transfer as well as singlet fission. An excimer state is commonly defined as a superposition of Frenkel exciton and charge transfer states. In this work, we investigate the dynamics of excimer formation and decay in π-stacked 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene (BPEA) covalent dimers appended to a xanthene spacer, where the electronic coupling between the two BPEA molecules is adjusted by changing their longitudinal molecular slip distances. Using exciton coupling calculations, we quantify the relative contributions of Frenkel excitons and charge transfer states and find that there is an upper and lower threshold of the charge transfer contribution for efficient excimer formation to occur. In conclusion, knowing these thresholds can aid the design of molecular aggregates that optimize singlet fission.

Mechanism, Thermochemistry, and Kinetics for the CH + N 2 Reaction Leading to Prompt NO Formation in Combustion

Here, the reaction of CH + N 2 forming H + NCN is a remarkable example of activation of the nitrogen triple bond and is an important source of prompt NO in combustion. The reaction pathway is complex and proceeds through two competing mechanisms: a cyclic addition channel initiated by c-HC(NN) and a chain-addition channel initiated by HCNN, both of which eventually form HNCN prior to dissociation to H + NCN. This work reinvestigates this reaction with composite coupled cluster protocols, including a novel spin-flip equation of motion coupled cluster scheme, combined with pragmatic two-dimensional master equation simulations of the resulting rate coefficients. These improved calculations predict the CH + N 2 rate coefficient between the two more recent previous theoretical results and reduce the uncertainties of the best theoretical models of this reaction to less than a factor of 1.3. Additionally, we provide a closer theoretical investigation of the simultaneous dependence of the CH + N 2 rate coefficient on pressure and temperature, and affirm that collisionally stabilized HNCN, another potential source of prompt NO, emerges as an appreciable product of this reaction under conditions relevant to automotive internal combustion engines and aircraft gas turbine engines.

Low Frequency Vibrational Modes of Two-Dimensional Lead-Free Metal Halide Double Perovskites

2D layered double perovskites of (S-MPA) 4 AgBiI 8 (MPA-AgBiI 8 ) and (S-MPA) 4 CuBiI 8 (MPA-CuBiI 8 ) (S-MPA, S-β-methylphenethylammonium) were synthesized with a hydrothermal method. The crystal structure of MPA-AgBiI 8 was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (scXRD). Powder XRD (pXRD) data suggest that the crystal structure of MPA-CuBiI 8 is more complex than that of MPA-AgBiI 8 . UV-Vis electronic absorption spectra of these perovskites reveal a bandgap of 2.03 eV for both. Short exciton lifetime from time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) results and low PL intensity of the Cu-based perovskite suggest a high density of trap states within the bandgap. Low frequency Raman spectra of both materials show distinct peaks and a slightly higher frequency for the Cu-based perovskite than the Ag-based perovskite. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were conducted to simulate the low frequency Raman spectra and help explain the different phonon modes, which are collective vibrations of metal halide bond bending and stretching within the Ag- and Cu-centered octahedra coupled with MPA libration and twisting within the inorganic layer. The DFT theory also quantified octahedral distortions in the two perovskites. Furthermore, this combined experimental and computational study provides new insights into the low frequency vibrations of 2D perovskites.

Universal Size-Dependent Stokes Shifts in Lead Halide Perovskite Nanocrystals

Size-dependent photoluminescence Stokes shifts (Δ E s ) universally exist in CsPbX 3 (X = Cl – , Br – , or I – ) perovskite nanocrystals (NCs). Δ E s values, which range from ~15 to 100 meV for NCs with average edge lengths ( l ) from approximately 13 to 3 nm, are halide-dependent such that Δ E s (CsPbI 3 ) > Δ E s (CsPbBr 3 ) ≳ Δ E s (CsPbCl 3 ). Observed size-dependent Stokes shifts are not artifacts of ensemble size distributions as demonstrated through measurements of single CsPbBr 3 NC Stokes shifts ((Δ E s ) = 42 ± 5 meV), which are in near quantitative agreement with associated ensemble ( l = 6.8 ± 0.8 nm) Δ E s values (Δ E s ≈ 50 meV). Transient differential absorption measurements additionally illustrate no significant spectral dynamics on the picosecond time scale that would contribute to Δ E s . This excludes polaron formation as being responsible for Δ E s . Overall, the results point to an origin for Δ E s , intrinsic to the size-dependent electronic properties of individual perovskite NCs.
