Design of QMF (Quadrature Mirror Filter) in spatial domain and edge encoding

Simoncelli and Adelson have extended the one dimensional Quadrature Mirror Filter (QMF) to two dimensions with hexagon symmetry and three dimensional spatio-temporal extensions with rhombic-duodecahedray symmetry. Jain and Crochiere presented an excellent QMF design technique in the time domain. It is proposed to extend the design of a two dimensional QMF over a rectangular lattice in the spatial domain based primarily on the extension of the idea of Jain and Crochiere. In addition, the design will investigate the use of two dimensional Z-transformations. Since this proposed QMF is intended for the applications in image processing, all the important and interesting engineering issues will be addressed throughout the development phase. The design of a two dimensional QMF is discussed. The motivation is to achieve an extremely high data compression ratio. It is entirely possible to achieve dramatic results when pattern recognition techniques are employed. The final goal is the demonstration of extremely high data compression ratios using NASA pictures.

Hypercube technology

The JPL designed MARKIII hypercube supercomputer has been in application service since June 1988 and has had successful application to a broad problem set including electromagnetic scattering, discrete event simulation, plasma transport, matrix algorithms, neural network simulation, image processing, and graphics. Currently, problems that are not homogeneous are being attempted, and, through this involvement with real world applications, the software is evolving to handle the heterogeneous class problems efficiently.

A superior edge preserving filter with a systematic analysis

A new, adaptive, edge preserving filter for use in image processing is presented. It had superior performance when compared to other filters. Termed the contiguous K-average, it aggregates pixels by examining all pixels contiguous to an existing cluster and adding the pixel closest to the mean of the existing cluster. The process is iterated until K pixels were accumulated. Rather than simply compare the visual results of processing with this operator to other filters, some approaches were developed which allow quantitative evaluation of how well and filter performs. Particular attention is given to the standard deviation of noise within a feature and the stability of imagery under iterative processing. Demonstrations illustrate the performance of several filters to discriminate against noise and retain edges, the effect of filtering as a preprocessing step, and the utility of the contiguous K-average filter when used with remote sensing data.

ULDA user's guide

The Uniform Low Dispersion Archive (ULDA) is a software system which, in one sitting, allows one to obtain copies on one's personal computer of those International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) low dispersion spectra that are of interest to the user. Overviews and use instructions are given for two programs, one to search for and select spectra, and the other to convert those spectra into a form suitable for the user's image processing system.

Generation of topographic terrain models utilizing synthetic aperture radar and surface level data

Topographical terrain models are generated by digitally delineating the boundary of the region under investigation from the data obtained from an airborne synthetic aperture radar image and surface elevation data concurrently acquired either from an airborne instrument or at ground level. A set of coregistered boundary maps thus generated are then digitally combined in three dimensional space with the acquired surface elevation data by means of image processing software stored in a digital computer. The method is particularly applicable for generating terrain models of flooded regions covered entirely or in part by foliage.

NASA plans for a Geostationary Earth Observatory (GEO) platform meant to operate in conjunction with the polar orbiting Earth Observing System (EOS) are discussed. The scientific goals of the GEO platform are summarized, and the facility's instruments are examined, including the microwave precipitation radiometer, atmospheric profiler, earth processes spectrometer, advanced lightning mapper, high resolution earth processes imager, operational instrument suite, solar constant and spectrum monitors, earth climate sensor, and trace gas imager. The GEO system to provide data and information to users is addressed.

Weighted slit extraction of low-dispersion IUE spectral data

The weighted slit extraction has been chosen by the IUE project as the standard extraction for low-dispersion spectra in the final IUE archives. In order to properly weight the data within the extraction slit and obtain the optimal evaluation of the true spectrum, a noise model is derived for IUE data. The exclusion of cosmic rays is demonstrated and the improvement in signal-to-noise ratio is quantified for spectra taken with a wide range of flux level. Problematic spectra, such as trailed spectra, multiple spectra, discontinuous spectra, and emission-line spectra, are extracted to demonstrate the robust nature of the method. Comparisons are made between the standard IUE Standard Image Processing System (IUESIPS) extraction, nonstandard narrow slit extraction, trailed IUESIPS extraction, and weighted extraction for these data. Other weighted slit extractions are briefly discussed. The advantages of the weighted slit extraction are: (1) the extraction improves the signal-to-noise ratio of the spectrum while conserving total flux; (2) most of the cosmic rays are automatically removed; (3) the output includes an error estimate for each point in the flux spectrum; and (4) the algorithm can be run in a batch mode that requires no special input parameters.

VSTOL ground effects testing with flow visualization and image enhancement

A remotely controlled high-energy fiber-optic light delivery technique is employed to examine the implementation of a laser-light-sheet flow-visualization system. During testing, video data are enhanced in real time using digital image processing techniques. A summary of test results for an advanced VSTOL configuration in ground effect, and techniques for the generation of 3D reconstructions for the flowfield are outlined. The system performed well during all phases of the test and proved to be an extremely useful asset to the overall test program. The most useful application of the flow visualization system was the interactive real-time flow field analysis made during the actual testing.

An interactive system for analysis of global cloud imagery

Synoptic images of the global cloud pattern composited from six contemporaneous satellites provide an unprecedented view of the global cloud field. Having horizontal resolution of about 0.5 deg and temporal resolution of 3 h, the global cloud imagery (GCI) resolves most of the variability of organized convection, including several harmonics of the diurnal cycle. Although the GCI has these attractive features, the dense and 3D nature of that data make it a formidable volume of information to treat in a practical and efficient manner. An interactive image-analysis system (IAS) has been developed to investigate the space-time variability of global cloud behavior. In the IAS, data, hardware, and software are integrated into a single system providing a variety of space-time covariance analyses in a menu-driven format. Owing to its customized architecture and certain homogeneous properties of the GCI, the IAS calculates such quantities effectively. Many covariance statistics are derived from 3D data with interactive speed, allowing the user to interrogate the archive iteratively in a single session. The 3D nature of those analyses and the speed with which they are performed distinguish the IAS from conventional image processing of 2D data.

Computerized reduction of airborne foil impactor data

A new technique for reducing data obtained from a foil impactor carried on the T-28 thunderstorm penetration aircraft is described. The technique employs a video-image processing system that was originally developed for satellite imagery and a computer-reduction program that was originally developed for determining cloud-size distributions to count and size particle impressions on the foil. This eliminates the tedious manual processing that has limited the usefulness of such devices, while at the same time improving objectivity. The technique has been applied to foil data acquired in thunderstorms in the southeastern United States during the Cooperative Huntsville Meteorological Experiment, where most of the particles were at least roughly spherical. Its usefulness for storms in which highly irregular or fragile ice particles predominate has yet to be established.
