Quantum duality in electromagnetism and the fine structure constant

We describe the interplay between electric-magnetic duality and higher symmetry in Maxwell theory. When the fine structure constant is rational, the theory admits noninvertible symmetries which can be realized as composites of electric-magnetic duality and gauging a discrete subgroup of the one-form global symmetry. These noninvertible symmetries are approximate quantum invariances of the natural world which emerge in the infrared below the mass scale of charged particles. We construct these symmetries explicitly as topological defects and illustrate their action on local and extended operators. We also describe their action on boundary conditions and illustrate some consequences of the symmetry for Hilbert spaces of the theory defined in finite volume. Nonperturbative aspects of the electromagnetic pion form factor at high energies

The structure of hadronic form factors at high energies and their deviations from perturbative quantum chromodynamics provide insight on nonperturbative dynamics. Using an approach that is consistent with dispersion relations, we construct a model that simultaneously accounts for the pion wave function, gluonic exchanges, and quark Reggeization. In particular, we find that quark Reggeization can be investigated at high energies by studying scaling violation of the form factor.

Observation of Skewed Electromagnetic Wakefields in an Asymmetric Structure Driven by Flat Electron Bunches

Relativistic charged -particle beams that generate intense longitudinal fields in accelerating structures also inherently couple to transverse modes. The effects of this coupling may lead to beam breakup instability and thus must be countered to preserve beam quality in applications such as linear colliders. Beams with highly asymmetric transverse sizes (flat beams) have been shown to suppress the initial instability in slab -symmetric structures. However, as the coupling to transverse modes remains, this solution serves only to delay instability. In order to understand the hazards of transverse coupling in such a case, we describe here an experiment characterizing the transverse effects on a flat beam, traversing near a planar dielectric lined structure. Further, the measurements reveal the emergence of a previously unobserved skew-quadrupolelike interaction when the beam is canted transversely, which is not present when the flat beam travels parallel to the dielectric surface. We deploy a multipole field fitting algorithm to reconstruct the projected transverse wakefields from the data. We generate the effective kick vector map using a simple two -particle theoretical model, with particle -in -cell simulations used to provide further insight for realistic particle distributions.

Charge radii and electromagnetic moments of 214−218 Bi : Exploring the “southern” border of the 𝑍 > 82 octupole-deformation region

The changes in the mean-squared charge radii relative to 209 Bi 126 (𝛿⁢⟨𝑟 2 ⟩ 𝑁,126 ) and the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments in 214−218 Bi have been measured using the in-source resonance-ionization spectroscopy technique at ISOLDE (CERN). Magnetic moments of odd-odd bismuth nuclei have been analyzed by the additivity relation. Previous tentative spin-parity and configuration assignments based on the 𝛽-decay feeding patterns have been supported. A normal odd-even staggering in charge radii of bismuth isotopes with 𝑁>126 has been observed. The new data for the 𝛿⁡⟨𝑟 2 ⟩ of bismuth isotopes allow a study of the isotonic dependencies in the charge radii, revealing jumps in 𝛿⁢⟨𝑟 2 ⟩ 132,126 and 𝛿⁢⟨𝑟 2 ⟩ 134,126 at 𝑍 = 84. This pattern could be explained by a sudden onset of octupole deformation at 𝑁 = 132 and 134 when going from polonium (𝑍 = 84) to astatine (𝑍 = 85).

Piezo-Antenna: An Electromagnetic-Ultrasonic Data Transfer System

Electronic systems contained within sealed metallic enclosures, such as nuclear waste containers where wire penetration is not an option, require a through-wall data transfer technology to communicate. One such technology utilizes piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers to communicate through the barrier using elastic waves. Currently demonstrated ultrasonic through-wall data communication techniques have relied on having a direct interface with the ultrasonic transducers on either side. Here, this work studies the coupling of an antenna to such an ultrasonic communication system. A computationally efficient model of a piezobarrier ultrasonic communication system and antenna using a simplified antenna model and a transfer matrix piezobarrier model is utilized to perform a representative parameter space search. The system efficiency and bandwidth trends are shown for the system parameters as well as operating frequency. The tradeoff between efficiency and bandwidth is also presented. A system configuration within the parameter space is fabricated and demonstrated to achieve a data rate of up to 100 kb/s.

Observation of Electromagnetic Transients in a Nb3Sn 4-layer Dipole Mirror Magnet

During testing of the Stress Managed Cosine-Theta dipole mirror magnet SMCTM1, magnet quenches were observed following large voltage spikes in the half-coil voltage taps which preceded normal quench initiation. Following some recent work at CERN measuring power current converter transients in relation to flux jumps, an additional differential current probe was added to the magnet instrumentation. Measurements of this probe, as well as the half coil voltage taps show a fast and substantial current change preceding the quench, hinting at coil motion. A simple model based on relative shift of the inner and outer layer coils was developed which suggests the magnitude of coil shift events is on the estimated relative coil shift from the magnet constraint conditions. The behavior is shown to be reversible and characteristic of stick-slip.
