Quantify Contaminant Partitioning in Advanced Chlorination Process

Chlorination of the zirconium in spent fuel cladding has been identified as a significant means of Zr recovery and purification, enabling a 25% (wt.) or greater reduction in waste requiring geologic disposition. Several chlorinating agents have been identified over the last few years, including gases and liquids. In particular, the interactions of sulfur-chloride solvents with zirconium may allow the separation of zirconium from uranium with the selective formation of ZrCl 4 . This report reviews what is known about reactions between chlorinating agents, uranium metal and oxide, Zircaloy and its alloying elements, and fission plus activation products. Plans for testing the feasibility of applying advanced chlorination methods developed for zirconium recycling to the front end of the recycling of spent nuclear fuel are also included.

ALGE Contaminant Transport Model for Emergency Response

Model Description • ALGE is a 3-dimensional hydrodynamic code to predict the movement of a dissolved tracer throughout a water body. • It has been recoded as an emergency response tool. • Can model large-scale bays and estuaries (Chesapeake Bay, Lake Michigan, etc.) • Model includes suspended sediment transport, dissolved and particulate chemical transport, radioactive decay, and dynamic salinity.

Analysis of Radioactive 65 Zn Contamination using 3D Position Sensitive CdZnTe Detectors

SRNL NMG Goal: In collaboration with ORNL, the aim is to identify and explore innovative technology opportunities that accelerate disposition, reduce life cycle costs, minimize worker radiation exposure, and improve worker safety and minimize program risks. • This process will include 3 glovebox systems that require personnel to dilute and package the plutonium for safe storage at WIPP. • For holdup monitoring and verification, gamma ray spectroscopy and imaging are the methods employed to achieve real time analysis of the plutonium waste. 2

In situ Characterization of Soot Aggregates Produced by Burning Contaminated Liquid Fuels with Nuclear Waste Surrogate

The motivation of this work was to complement other studies intended to enhance and update DOE-HDBK-3010-94 for hazard scenarios like nuclear waste fires. In this work, a uniquely designed combustion chamber was successfully integrated with a light scattering technique to characterize soot aggregates. The chamber design allowed for soot investigation within the flame as well as after soot left the incandescent flame region.
