Spectrophotometry /0.33 to 1.07 microns/ of 433 Eros and compositional implications

The spectral reflectance (0.33-1.07 micrometers) for the asteroid 433 Eros was determined as a function of rotational phase during January 28-30, and February 15, 1975. Interpretation of absorption features suggests Eros is composed of an undifferentiated assemblage of moderate to high temperature minerals (iron, pyroxene, and olivine, but no carbon). H-type ordinary chondrites are such assemblages, but it would be premature to conclude that Eros is like an H chondrite meteorite in composition until a better understanding is reached of possible physical differences between laboratory powders and asteroid regoliths for metal-bearing assemblages. There are no large-scale major compositional variations on the different sides of Eros.

A methodology for producing small scale rural land use maps in semi-arid developing countries using orbital imagery

The author has identified the following significant results. Results have shown that it is feasible to design a methodology that can provide suitable guidelines for operational production of small scale rural land use maps of semiarid developing regions from LANDSAT MSS imagery, using inexpensive and unsophisticated visual techniques. The suggested methodology provides immediate practical benefits to map makers attempting to produce land use maps in countries with limited budgets and equipment. Many preprocessing and interpretation techniques were considered, but rejected on the grounds that they were inappropriate mainly due to the high cost of imagery and/or equipment, or due to their inadequacy for use in operational projects in the developing countries. Suggested imagery and interpretation techniques, consisting of color composites and monocular magnification proved to be the simplest, fastest, and most versatile methods.

Garnet and pyroxene compositions in some diamondiferous eclogites

Analyses are reported for garnet and pyroxene from 17 eclogites that contain diamond. The garnets contain small but significant contents of Na, Ti and P and the pyroxenes contain traces of K. The diamond-bearing eclogites do not constitute a unique compositional group but show a range of mineral compositions consistent with a very high P-T environment.

Microwave absorption characteristics of the clouds of Venus from Mariner 10 radio occultation

Measurements of received signal strength at S-band (13 cm) and X-band (4.8 cm) wavelengths during the radio occultation of Mariner 10 by Venus on February 5, 1974, are examined in order to study the structure and composition of the absorbing medium. The frequency excursions of the signals are determined and used to obtain the structure of the refractive index in the lower atmosphere. Profiles of excess signal attenuation due to atmospheric scattering and absorption are presented which indicate that the X-band signal experienced much more absorption and was extinguished at about 50 km, while the S-band signal penetrated to about 42 km. The optical-depth data are inverted by means of a discrete inversion method to obtain the absorption coefficient for each band as a function of height, and the resulting absorption-coefficient profiles are compared with the attenuation at vertical incidence modeled from planetary radar and passive microwave observations of Venus. The absorption coefficients at the two wavelengths are employed to estimate the liquid content and composition of the microwave-absorbing cloud particles.

Resin/fiber thermo-oxidative interactions in PMR polymide/graphite composites

The amounts of resin weight loss and fiber weight loss in four PMR-polyimide graphite fiber composites were calculated from the composite weight losses and the fiber/resin ratios of the composites after long term thermo-oxidative aging in 600 F air. The accelerating effect of graphite fiber on resin weight loss, compared to neat resin weight loss, indicated the presence of a deleterious resin/fiber thermo-oxidative interaction, presumably due to fiber impurities. Similarly, the decelerating effect of the protective matrix resin on fiber weight loss, compared to bare fiber weight loss, was also demonstrated. The amount of hydrazine-indigestible resin and the amount of loose surface graphite fiber that formed during 600 deg F exposure of the composites were quantitatively determined. The indigestible residual resin was also qualitatively studied by scanning electron microscopy.

Planetary atmospheres

The present paper deals with some of the principal data on extraterrestrial atmospheres obtained during the period 1975-1978. The atmospheres of Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and the Jovian satellites are examined, showing that many first-order questions concerning composition, physical state, and kinematics of these atmospheres have been answered.

Characterization of submicron matrix phyllosilicates from Murray and Nogoya carbonaceous chondrites

The combined techniques of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis have been used to study dispersed, submicron phyllosilicates and the 'poorly characterized phase' of C2 matrix material. Morphologies and structure types observed are similar to terrestrial chrysotile. Distinctive morphologies and 7.3-A characteristic basal spacings combined with composition information rule out phyllosilicates other than serpentine group minerals as the predominant phyllosilicate material. The 'poorly characterized phase' is composed of chemically similar very fine-grained phyllosilicate and amorphous material. The observation of interstratified phyllosilicate material sheds additional doubt on compositional data which is not accompanied by structural data from the same particle.

The moon

The principal scientific results from the Apollo Program are reviewed. Data on the nature of the moon, including the surface, interior, and composition, are discussed. Attention is also given to problems of lunar age determination, and to certain unanswered questions concerning the moon (e.g., the chemical composition of the whole moon and the moon's asymmetry). A number of illustrative photographs are presented.

Composition and thermal profiles of the Jovian upper atmosphere determined by the Voyager ultraviolet stellar occultation experiment

During the occultation of the star Regulus (B7 type) by Jupiter as seen from the Voyager 2 spacecraft on July 9, 1979, two absorbing regions were detected. Between 911 and 1200 A, H2 was absorbing over a 600 km altitude range. Above 1300 A, the rapid increase of the absorption by the hydrocarbons was observed over an altitude interval of approximately 100 km with a height resolution of 3 km. The analysis of these absorption features has provided the height profiles of molecular hydrogen, methane, ethane, and acetylene, as well as the thermal profile in the upper atmosphere of Jupiter. Combining the Voyager ultraviolet spectrometer results with other data, such as those obtained by the Voyager infrared and radioscience instruments, has yielded a comprehensive model of the composition and structure of the atmosphere of Jupiter.

The isotopes of H through C in galactic cosmic rays

The charge, energy spectra, and isotopic composition of hydrogen through nitrogen have been studied with the GSFC/UNH cosmic ray experiments on board the Pioneer 10 and 11 spacecraft. Good charge and mass resolution have been obtained by utilizing three parameter analysis (i.e., two measurements of delta E and a measurement of the residual kinetic energy of stopping particles). This method allows isotopic resolution for the High Energy Telescope (HET) which operates over a typical energy range of 30-56-MeV/nuc for He. The observations will be over solar quiet times from September 1976-September 1977. The resolution, methods of analysis, spectra, and isotopic composition will be presented and discussed where the statistical significance of H to C isotopes is meaningful.

Spectrophotometric remote sensing of planets and satellites

The most recent comprehensive results on spectrophotometric remote sensing of planets and satellites are reviewed. The moon and terrestrial planets are considered in terms of individual surface elements, reflectance spectra being analyzed to show the composition of the soils of these bodies. For more distant, unresolved objects, including the asteroids, the Galilean satellites, the small satellites of Jupiter, the rings and satellites of Saturn and Uranus, as well as Triton and Pluto, the global or hemispheric averages of surface composition are the objects of study. The absorptions due to methane gas and frost are indicated.

Polycarbosilazane-Resin Polymerization Process

Process suitable for production of silicon nitride/silicon carbide fibers. High-tensile-strength silicon carbide/silicon nitride fibers prepared by pyrolyzing fibers drawn from melt of polycarbosilazane resin. Such fibers show promise as replacements for carbon fibers in high-strength composites for automotive, aerospace, and other applications where high electrical conductivity of carbon fibers makes them unsuitable.

Diamondlike flake composites

A carbon coating is vacuum arc deposited on a smooth surface of a target which is simultaneously ion beam sputtered. The bombarding ions have sufficient energy to create diamond bonds. Spalling occurs as the carbon deposit thickens. The resulting diamond-like carbon flakes are mixed with a binder or matrix material to form a composite material having improved thermal, electrical, mechanical, and tribological properties when used in aerospace structures and components.

Thermal and mechanical properties of advanced, high temperature ceramic-composite insulation

It is found that the mechanical properties of fibrous refractory composite insulation (FRCI) can be improved if a higher calcination temperature is used before final processing. The results also reveal that a higher density FRCI containing 60 wt pct aluminoborosilicate fibers will exhibit minimal surface recession at 1480 C in a convective-heating environment. Another finding is that the material performance in the convective-heating environment is limited by the coating and the temperature capability of its emittance agent. A table is included giving the coating compositions used with the composite insulation and tested in the convectively heated environment at a surface temperature of 1480 C.

The elemental and isotopic composition of quiet time low energy cosmic rays

Isotopic abundances during several periods of solar quiet times are derived from multidimensional analysis of double dE/dX modes made with two 150 micron dE detectors and a 3000 micron stopping E detector. The spectra of the low-energy cosmic rays suggest that all the primary species of elements exhibit flux enhancements. The flux increases of 5-12 MeV/N for C, Mg, Si, and Fe are different from the anomalous components and may result from solar contamination of the quiet time data or from interplanetary acceleration processes. They may be anomalous components (ACR), although to a lesser extent than He, N, O, and Ne. The isotopic data indicate that the ACR component is predominantly N-14, O-16, and Ne-20. The isotopic compositions require that the ACRs have traversed a very limited amount of material, suggesting a local origin for them.

The heavy ion compositional signature in 3He-rich solar particle events

A survey of the approx. 1 MeV/nucleon heavy ion abundances in 66 He3-rich solar particle events was performed using the Max-Planck-Institut/University of Maryland and Goddard Space Flight Center instruments on the ISEE-3 spacecraft. The observations were carried out in interplanetary space over the period 1978 October through 1982 June. Earlier observations were confirmed which show an enrichment of heavy ions in HE3-rich events, relative to the average solar energetic particle composition in large particle events. For the survey near 1.5 MeV/nucleon the enrichments compared to large solar particle events are approximately He4:C:O:Ne:Mg:Si:Fe = 0.44:0.66:1.:3.4:3.5:4.1:9.6. Surprising new results emerging from the present broad survey are that the heavy ion enrichment pattern is the same within a factor of approx. 2 for almost all cases, and the degree of heavy ion enrichment is uncorrelated with the He3 enrichment. Overall, the features established appear to be best explained by an acceleration mechanism in which the He3 enrichment process is not responsible for the heavy ion enrichment, but rather the heavy ion enrichment is a measure of the ambient coronal composition at the sites where the He3-rich events occur.

Materials for engine applications above 3000 deg F: An overview

Materials for future generations of aeropropulsion systems will be required to perform at ever-increasing temperatures and have properties superior to the current state of the art. Improved engine efficiency can reduce specific fuel consumption and thus increase range and reduce operating costs. The ultimate payoff gain is expected to come when materials are developed which can perform without cooling at gas temperatures to 2200 C (4000 F). An overview is presented of materials for applications above 1650 C (3000 F), some pertinent physical property data, and the rationale used: (1) to arrive at recommendations of material systems that qualify for further investigation, and (2) to develop a proposed plan of research. From an analysis of available thermochemical data it was included that such materials systems must be composed of oxide ceramics. The required structural integrity will be achieved by developing these materials into fiber-reinforced ceramic composites.
