Optical alignment of electrodes on electrical discharge machines

Shadowgraph system projects magnified image on screen so that alignment of small electrodes mounted on electrical discharge machines can be corrected and verified. Technique may be adapted to other machine tool equipment where physical contact cannot be made during inspection and access to tool limits conventional runout checking procedures.

Improved operation of rechargeable oxygen electrodes

Procedure for enhancing operating life and performance of oxygen electrodes in rechargeable metal-oxygen batteries and hydrogen-oxygen fuel cells is discussed. Accumulation of refractory anodic oxide layer and inhibiting effects on oxygen reduction are described. Improvements in service life of batteries by following procedure are explained.

Evaluation program for secondary spacecraft cells: Acceptance test of Eagle-Picher 100 ampere-hour nickel-cadmium cells with auxiliary electrodes

Tests were conducted on a group of 29 cells for the purpose of removing from the life cycle program all cells found to have electrolyte leakage, internal shorts, low capacity, or inability to recover open circuit voltage above 1.150 volts after the cell short test. The test findings include the following: (1) All the cells exceeded the rated capacity of 103.5 to 119.0 ampere-hours on all three capacity checks. (2) All cells recovered above the 1.150 volt requirement after the cell short test. (3) The cells cannot be overcharged at the c/10 rate without exceeding 1.500 volts after approximately 12 to 13 hours of charge. (4) The resistance value necessary to provide maximum signal power across the auxiliary electrode was found to be 10 ohms. (5) One cell revealed a definite leak at the negative terminal.

A new dry biomedical electrode

Electronic circuitry contains new operational amplifier which incorporates monolithic super-gain transistors. Electrode does not provide voltage amplification; instead, it acts as current amplifier to make it possible to pick up electrical potentials from surface of highly resistant dry skin.

Method and apparatus for sputtering utilizing an apertured electrode and a pulsed substrate bias

The method and equipment used for sputtering by use of an apertured electrode and a pulsed substrate bias are discussed. The technique combines the advantages of ion plating with the versatility of a radio frequency sputtered source. Electroplating is accomplished by passing a pulsed high voltage direct current to the article being plated during radio frequency sputtering.

Electrodes for the thermionic converters, phase 2 - 3

The characteristics of electrodes for thermionic converters are discussed. A metal/ceramic Marchuk tube was constructed and operated with a quiescent cesium vapor plasma corresponding to cesium liquid reservoir temperatures from 376 to 427 K. The work function characteristics of tantalum test emitters coated with anodic films were measured to evaluate the applicability of the materials as the collector surface in a plasma mode thermionic converter. Work function minimum values between 1.4 and 1.5 electron volts were observed. The effect of the electronegative surface layers was partially obscured by additive vapor impurities detected by the clean tantalum reference emitter.

Method of making porous conductive supports for electrodes

Porous conductive supports for electrochemical cell electrodes are made by electroforming thin corrugated nickel foil, and by stacking pieces of the corrugated foil alternatively with pieces of thin flat nickel foil. Corrugations in successive corrugated pieces are oriented at different angles. Adjacent pieces of foil are bonded by heating in a hydrogen atmosphere and then cutting the stack in planes perpendicular to the foils.

Extended electrode technique

The extended electrode technique is a unique welding process which utilizes manual gas-metal-arc (GMAW) semi-automatic equipment and close, square butt joints to effectively produce a weld. The technique takes advantage of the resistance heating of the electode extension to effect the root pass. Weldments as large as 72-X30-X2-inch have been fabricated with this technique under normal shipyard welding conditions. Mechanical properties and explosion bulge tests indicate that satisfactory results are obtained with this process. Potential savings of approximately 50 percent can be achieved in flat welding and repair of heavy structural steel members.
