Dynamic Load Inrush Current Mitigation in Islanded Microgrids Powered by Grid-Forming Inverters

Grid-forming inverters in a microgrid may trip due to high inrush current caused by a switched connection of an inductive load, e.g., a relatively large induction motor. The control scheme presented in this article includes virtual inertia control method superimposed on the cascaded controller. This article studies the impact of cascaded control scheme used for grid-forming inverter to mitigate the inrush current effects and enhance the inverter’s robustness for the safe connection of inductive and dynamic loads. Experimental tests are performed using the virtual inertia method for generating the reference angle for synchronous frame conversion. The experimental performance and sensitivity of the controller to different controller gain settings for a switched connection of an induction motor are discussed. The cascaded operation significantly mitigates the inrush currents while the inverters can perform a normal operation. The performance of the control method is tested in a laboratory-scale hardware setup of a 208V microgrid fed by 5kVA and 10kVA inverters, and the results are presented.

Surface-Tailoring and Morphology Control as Strategies for Sustainable Development in Transport Sector

Surface wetting plays an important role in the corrosion protection processes of aerospace applications. Here, we demonstrate the use of ultrafast femtosecond (fs) laser processing techniques to tailor the wetting properties of aluminum (Al) substrates by creating diverse surface morphologies. Specifically, two distinct laser scanning methods—dot-hatching and cross-hatching—were employed to fabricate microstructures on the substrates. By varying the incident laser parameters, we confirmed that the resulting surface morphologies exhibit different wetting behaviors, spanning from hydrophilicity to hydrophobicity. Furthermore, time-resolved spreading tests validate that dynamic wetting behaviors can also be modified. This fs laser processing approach provides a straightforward, one-step fabrication method for effectively modifying the wetting properties of Al alloys.

Mildly Hierarchical Triple Dynamics and Applications to the Outer Solar System

Three-body interactions are ubiquitous in astrophysics. For instance, Kozai–Lidov oscillations in hierarchical triple systems have been studied extensively and applied to a wide range of astrophysical systems. However, mildly hierarchical triples also play an important role, but they are less explored. In this work, we consider the secular dynamics of a test particle in a mildly hierarchical configuration. We find the limit within which the secular approximation is reliable when the outer perturber is in a circular orbit. In addition, we present resonances and chaotic regions using surface-of-section plots, and characterize regions of phase space that allow large eccentricity and inclination variations. Finally, we apply the secular results to the outer Solar System. We focus on the distribution of extreme trans-Neptunian objects (eTNOs) under the perturbation of a possible outer planet (Planet 9), and find that in addition to a low-inclination Planet 9, a polar or a counter-orbiting one could also produce pericenter clustering of eTNOs, while the polar one leads to a wider spread of eTNO inclinations.

Toward the Analytic Bootstrap of Energy Correlators

In this paper, we present a framework for the analytic bootstrap of three-point energy correlators, a crucial observable in N = 4 N=4 super Yang-Mills theory and quantum chromodynamics (QCD). Our approach combines spherical contour techniques, general physical constraints such as pole cancellations, and power correction data in the singular limits to determine its analytic expression. In contrast to previous bootstrap studies restricted to scattering amplitudes for supersymmetric theories, our framework makes use of the properties of Feynman integrals, marking a significant step toward bootstrapping realistic QCD observables. Using this method, we derive analytic expressions for leading-order three-point energy correlators with equal and unequal energy weights, where the latter are crucial ingredients for projected N N-point energy correlators. We also apply the recently developed technique of analytic regression with lattice reduction as a way to bypass needing explicit expressions for the singular limits. Bridging theoretical advances in scattering amplitudes with the renewed interest in weighted cross-sections, our work opens the door to precision tests of QCD dynamics through analytic event-shape predictions.

Cyclic oxidation evaluation: Approaching application conditions

A survey is presented of the cyclic furnace and burner rig oxidation facilities at NASA-Lewis Research Center together with a review of selected test results and an initial interpretation of the data obtained. Cyclic furnace tests are used to conveniently screen alloy oxidation resistance and spall tendency; high velocity tests further indicate dynamic environmental resistance. Alloys which form scales predominantly of Cr2O3/chromite spinel spall much more than those forming alpha Al2O3/aluminate spinel scales. Weight changes due to scale spalling were used to estimate alloy depletion/thickness losses.

Valence-bond study of the /H2, D2/ exchange reaction mechanism.

The exchange reaction of H2 with D2 to form 2 HD is important in that it is fundamentally the simplest four-body exchange reaction and should therefore represent a model system on which various theories of reactions dynamics might be tested. A number of theoretical and experimental investigations carried out on this system are reviewed. It is concluded that a Y yields T yields Y mechanism for the (H2, D2) exchange is not a low energy pathway that would make theory compatible with the shock-tube experiments of Bauer and Ossa (1966) and of Burcat and Lifshits (1967).

Design, fabrication, and test of a full-scale graphite/epoxy metering truss for the space telescope

This paper presents the work performed in a program sponsored by MSFC-NASA in which a full-scale graphite/epoxy metering truss was designed, fabricated and tested. The primary requirement was to provide a structure that was dimensionally stable in a transient temperature environment. Structural element characterization requiring measurements in the microstrain region are described along with resulting strength, stiffness and coefficient of thermal expansion data. The full-scale tests included static, dynamic and thermal-vacuum dimensional stability evaluations.
