Improved toughness of refractory compounds

The concept of grain-boundary-engineering through elimination of the grain-boundary silicate phase in silicon nitride was developed. The process involved removal of the silica from the nitride powder via a thermal treatment coupled with the use of nitride additives to compensate the remaining oxygen. Magnesium and aluminum nitrides are found to be the most effective additive for use as oxygen compensators. Strength decreases at elevated temperatures are not observed in the alumina containing material. The creep rate of a dual additive sialon composition was two orders of magnitude lower at 1400 C than commercial silicon nitride. A cursory analysis of the creep mechanism indicate that grain-boundary sliding is avoided through elimination of the grain-boundary silicate phase.

Organosilicon compounds. XVIII - Silicon-containing dianhydrides

Description of four new silicon-containing dianhydrides synthetized in an attempt to provide useful silicon-containing polyimide precursors. They were prepared by aqueous potassium permanganate-pyridine oxidations of corresponding tetramethyl intermediates to form tetracarboxylic acids, which were dehydrated to the dianhydrides.

GC-MS in the analysis of organic compounds in meteorites

The application of an analytical approach combining gas chromatography with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) has shown that the amino acid composition of meteorite extracts is quite complex. A computer was used in the evaluation of the data obtained in the investigations. The computer programs developed have been concerned solely with the mass spectra of amino acids. Specialized programs have been written to determine the number of carbon atoms in an amino acid which is a member of any of three subclasses.

Investigation of the difficulties associated with the use of lead telluride and other II - IV compounds for thin film thermistors

The fabrication of thermistors was investigated for use as atmospheric temperature sensors in meteorological rocket soundings. The final configuration of the thin film thermistor is shown. The composition and primary functions of the six layers of the sensor are described. A digital controller for thin film deposition control is described which is capable of better than .1 A/sec rate control. The computer program modules for digital control of thin film deposition processing are included.

Chlorine compounds and stratospheric ozone

A report by Cicerone et al. (1974) concerned with the potential size of the atmospheric perturbation produced by man-made chlorofluoromethanes is considered, giving attention to a number of errors made in the first investigation and their correction. However, the corrections do not significantly change the results reported. It had been found that chlorine oxides which arise from chlorofluoromethane usage will within 10 or 15 years provide a sink for stratospheric ozone which will dominate the natural sinks for ozone.

Compound solder joints

Joining technique prevents contamination, may be used to join dissimilar metal tubes, minimizes fluid and gas entrapment, expedites repairs, and can yield joints having leakage rates less than 0.000001 standard cubic cm He/min. Components of joint are solder sleeve, two solder rings, Teflon sleeve, and tubing to be joined.

Applied research on 2-6 compound materials for heterojunction solar cells

Several II-VI heterojunctions show promise for photovoltaic conversion of solar energy. The three of greatest interest are p-CdTe/n-CdS, p-CdTe/n-ZnSe, and p-ZnTe/n-CdSe. Several p-CdTe/n-CdS heterojunction cells have been prepared by close spaced transport deposition of p-CdTe on single crystal n-CdS, and by two source vacuum evaporation of n-CdS on single crystal p-CdTe. Both types of cells, in an experimental stage, are quite comparable, exhibiting values of quantum efficiency between 0.5 and 0.9, open circuit voltages between 0.50 and 0.66 V, fill factors between 0.4 and 0.6, and solar efficiencies up to 4 percent. Cells of p-ZnTe/n-CdSe have also been made by close spaced vapor transport deposition of n-CdSe on single crystal p-ZnTe.

Assessment of mapping exposed ferrous and ferric iron compounds using Skylab-EREP data

The author has identified the following significant results. The S190B color photography is as useful as LANDSAT data for the mapping of color differences in the rocks and soils of the terrain. An S192 ratio of 0.79 - 0.89 and 0.93 - 1.05 micron bands produced an apparently successful delineation of ferrous, ferric, and other materials, in agreement with theory and ratio code studies. From an analysis of S191 data, basalt and dacite were separated on the basis of differences in spectral emissivity in the 8.3 - 12 micron region.

Improving the toughness of refractory compounds

Composition and processing studies were conducted on silicon nitride and silicon carbide materials. Charpy mode impact testing to 2415 F established the effectiveness of higher purity silicon nitride powder sources in reducing the scatter of measurements and in improving short time bend strengths as well as bend stress rupture properties. Stabilized zirconia additions in particular were observed to dramatically enhance low and high temperature bend strengths and stress rupture properties for all grades of silicon nitride powder. Silicon carbide samples showed relatively poor impact resistance, although the maxima in stress rupture behavior was exhibited by this material.

Fabrication and surface characterization of composite refractory compounds suitable for thermionic converters

Procedures for fabricating high purity single crystals of LaB6 and SmB6 have been developed. Auger spectroscopy shows that a clean surface can be obtained by thermal heating at 1700 K; such a clean surface gives a value of B/La of 2.3 to 2.6 for the (100) face. The measured thermionic and FERP work functions of the (100) face of LaB6 are 2.47 and 2.28 eV, respectively. The electron reflection coefficient for LaB6(100) increases near zero primary energy to 0.5. Flash thermal desorption of an oxygen dosed surface showed that B2O3 is the desorption product at 1600 to 1700 K. A work function increase of 1.6 eV was observed on oxygen adsorption on LaB6(100). Thermal desorption of Co occurs at approximately 1300 K. A reduction of the work function to 1.39 eV was observed on adsorption of a partial monolayer of Cs on LaB6(100). The evaporation of LaB6 occurs as atomic La and B with a value of B/La of 6 to 3 in the temperature range 1700 to 2000 K. The activation energies of desorption for La and B are 6.3 + or - 0.3 and 6.8 + or - 0.3 eV, respectively.

Streakline flow visualization of discrete-hole film cooling with normal, slanted, and compound angle injection

Film injection from discrete holes in a three-row, staggered array with five-diameter spacing was studied for three hole angles: (1) normal, (2) slanted 30 deg to the surface in the direction of the main stream, and (3) slanted 30 deg to the surface and 45 deg laterally to the main stream. The ratio of the boundary layer thickness-to-hole diameter and Reynolds number were typical of gas-turbine film-cooling applications. Detailed streaklines showing the turbulent motion of the injected air were obtained by photographing very small neutrally buoyant, helium-filled soap bubbles which follow the flow field.

Photosynthesis of organic compounds in the atmosphere of Jupiter

An efficient conversion of CH4 to hydrocarbons and HCN takes place when NH3 is photolysed in the presence of CH4, H2, and He using a 184.9 nm light source. The extent of NH3 decomposition after a 1 hr exposure was determined spectrophotometrically; CH4, N2, and C2 and C3 hydrocarbons were detected and analyzed by mass spectrometry. Photolysis of one molar equivalent of NH3 results in the loss of 0.84 molar equivalent of CH4, which apparently reacts with hot hydrogen atoms produced by photolysis. The 8% of the NH3 which is not converted to N2 probably is converted to organic amines and nitrile derivatives. The results indicate that NH3 photolysis is a highly probable mechanism for the conversion of methane to more complex hydrocarbons in the upper atmosphere of Jupiter, and predict the occurrence of HCN, NH2NH2, and higher hydrocarbons in the Jovian atmosphere above the NH3 clouds.
