Magnetic simulation of gravity.

Investigation of the feasibility of a magnetically simulated gravity that could make it possible to simulate aircraft jettison processes in a wind tunnel. It is shown that coils capable to produce a thereto suitable magnetic field configuration do exist. Circumstances are defined for which multiple jettison releases may be simulated, and an approximate calculation for the errors due to magnetic field nonuniformities is presented.

Compact photomultiplier housing with controlled cooling.

Description of a compact photomultiplier housing which can provide controlled cooling to the photomultiplier tube down to -90 C. The cooling is accomplished by flowing liquid nitrogen cooled helium gas through a series of coils which envelop the photocathode portion of the tube. The temperature is controlled by controlling the flow of the gas with a fine adjustable needle valve. The temperature is measured near the photocathode of the photomultiplier by a calibrated thermistor.

Sensor noise in low-level flux-gate magnetometers.

The noise mechanism in a well-designed magnetometer is shown to be due to small-scale magnetic moments which are probably small volumes of the core material that are not oriented by the drive field. Design developments include the sense coil radius and the development of a drive waveform which yields considerably improved performance over the commonly used sine wave drive.

Electrical conductivity and velocity of highly ionized plasma flows - Theory and experiment.

Use of an immersible, three-coil, magnetic-induction probe, previously tested in a low-density supersonic argon jet, to measure electrical conductivity and velocity profiles of a highly ionized high-density nitrogen jet in the continuum flow regime where effects due to probe bow shocks and boundary layers might not be negligible. Measured centerline values of electrical conductivity and velocity were compared with predictions based on a theoretical analysis previously developed to study the gas as it expanded adiabatically and inviscidly from an equilibrium sonic state to the nozzle exit. The resulting numerical exit plane values for electron density and electron temperature were then substituted into the Spitzer-Haerm conductivity formula to compute a theoretical conductivity which agreed within 40% of the measured conductivity, while the calculated and experimental velocity values differed by as much as 50%. The lack of agreement was attributed to the possible use of invalid assumptions and boundary conditions in the computer analysis or to the unknown effects of shocks on the probe data.

Comments on the measurement of power spectra of the interplanetary magnetic field

Examination of possible noise sources in the measurement of the power spectrum of fluctuations in the interplanetary magnetic field shows that most measurements by fluxgate magnetometers are limited by digitization noise whereas the search coil magnetometer is limited by instrument noise. The folding of power about the Nyquist frequency or aliasing can be a serious problem at times for many magnetometers, but it is not serious during typical solar wind conditions except near the Nyquist frequency. Waves in the solar wind associated with the presence of the earth's bow shock can contaminate the interplanetary spectrum in the vicinity of the earth. However, at times the spectrum in this region is the same as far from the earth. Doppler shifting caused by the convection of waves by the solar wind makes the interpretation of interplanetary spectra difficult.

UK-4 flight spacecraft magnetic tests

Magnetic tests conducted on the UK-4 spacecraft are discussed. The objectives of the test are: (1) to determine the permanent, induced, and stray magnetic moments of the spacecraft, (2) to assess its magnetic stability, (3) to determine the dipole moment produced by energizing the magnetorquer coil, (4) to measure the despin torque due to eddy current and magnetic hysteresis, and (5) to deperm, compensate, and make other adjustments necessary to achieve satisfactory magnetic characteristics for the spacecraft.

Performance of an ion-cyclotron-wave plasma apparatus operated in the radiofrequency sustained mode

An experimental study has been made of an ion-cyclotron-wave apparatus operated in the RF-sustained mode, that is, a mode in which the Stix RF coil both propagates the waves and maintains the plasma. Problems associated with this method of operation are presented. Some factors that are important to the coupling of RF power are noted. In general, the wave propagation and wave damping data agree with theory. Some irregularities in wave fields are observed. Maximum ion temperature is 870 eV at a density of five times 10 to the 12th power cu cm and RF power of 90 kW. Coupling efficiency is 70 percent.

Low power electromagnetic flowmeter providing accurate zero set

A low power, small size electromagnetic flowmeter system is described which produces a zero output signal for zero flow. The system comprises an air core type electromagnetic flow transducer, a field current supply circuit for the transducer coils and a pre-amplifier and demodulation circuit connected to the output of the transducer. To prevent spurious signals at zero flow, separate, isolated power supplies are provided for the two circuits. The demodulator includes a pair of synchronous rectifiers which are controlled by signals from the field current supply circuit. Pulse transformer connected in front of the synchronous rectifiers provide isolation between the two circuits.

Growth of a single crystal ribbon in space

Three critical technological areas associated with adapting the method of pulling signal crystal silicon ribbon to a space environment were investigated. Basic parameters such as the magnitude of the forces required and the coupling between thermal and force are discussed. The design of a ribbon puller is described, and the problems encountered are also discussed. The force fields in the vicinity of a coil were characterized and results of attempts to pull ribbon are described. The results of the one experiment to grow a conventional float zone crystal in an external static magnetic field are presented.

The null magnetic field as reference for the study of geomagnetic directional effects in animals and man.

Techniques for producing very low and zero magnetic fields are considered, giving attention to the compensation of the geomagnetic field by a Helmholtz coil system, approaches utilizing the shielding power of highly permeable alloys, and the complete exclusion of the geomagnetic field with the aid of a superconductive shield. Animal experiments in low magnetic fields are discussed, together with the exposure of man to 'null' magnetic fields and the Josephson junction as a possible biosensor of magnetic fields. It is found that neither the functions nor the behavior of man changes significantly during a two-week exposure to magnetic fields below 50 gammas.

Passive solar array orientation devices for terrestrial application.

A passive solar array orientation device, called a thermal heliotrope, is described, and several terrestrial applications are illustrated. The thermal heliotrope consists of a bimetallic helical coil that serves as the motor element, producing torque and angular displacement. A control mechanism in the form of one or more shades completes the basic device. In comparison with electromechanical tracking systems, the thermal heliotrope is electrically passive, has relatively few parts, and is low cost. After describing the principle of operation and several models built for space applications, the design considerations for several terrestrial thermal heliotrope units are presented. It is suggested that the use of the thermal heliotrope for solar array orientation could significantly reduce array cost, thereby increasing the competitive economic posture of solar arrays for terrestrial applications. The thermal heliotrope modified for terrestrial use is readily adaptable to orient solar energy concentrators, such as furnaces and stills.

Plasmaspheric hiss.

A relatively steady band of ELF hiss has been detected by the OGO 5 search coil magnetometer on almost every passage through the plasmasphere; except for an anomalous region of the dayside at high geomagnetic latitudes, the emissions terminate abruptly at the plasmapause and are therefore referred to as 'plasmaspheric hiss.' A preliminary statistical study of the properties of the observed whistler mode turbulence has yielded the following characteristics: the waves are band limited with a sharp lower-frequency cutoff and a more diffuse upper-frequency cutoff; power spectra show a well-defined maximum near a few hundred hertz, the peak intensities generally ranging between 10 to the minus 7th power and 0.00001 gamma squared/Hz; the wave energy is spread over a bandwidth of a few hundred hertz, and corresponding wideband amplitudes are 5 to 50 milligamma; the waves are highly turbulent in nature and show little tendency toward definite polarization.

Magnetogasdynamic compression of a coaxial plasma accelerator flow for micrometeoroid simulation.

A new configuration of a coaxial plasma accelerator with self-energized magnetic compressor coil attached is described. It is shown that the circuit may be treated theoretically by analyzing an equivalent circuit mesh. The results obtained from the theoretical analysis are shown to compare favorably with the results measured experimentally. Using this accelerator configuration, glass beads of 125-micron diameter were accelerated to velocities as high as 11 km/sec, while 700-micron-diam glass beads were accelerated to velocities as high as 5 km/sec. The velocities are within the hypervelocity regime of meteroids.

ELF observations during the December 1971 storm.

Initial results from the University of Minnesota search coil magnetometers aboard the Explorer 45 Satellite show several types of ELF signals during the magnetic storms of Dec. 16-19, 1971. The orbit of the satellite at this time was nearly equatorial, with an apogee near 5 earth radii at 2100 local time, and a perigee below 300 km. The emissions vary during different phases of the storms and also with the position of the spacecraft in the magnetosphere. The location of the plasmapause appears to be a particularly important factor in determining the type and intensity of the signals.

Initial results from the NASA Lewis Bumpy Torus experiment

Initial results were obtained from low power operation of the NASA Lewis Bumpy Torus experiment, in which a steady-state ion heating method based on the modified Penning discharge is applied in a bumpy torus confinement geometry. The magnet facility consists of 12 superconducting coils, each 19 cm i.d. and capable of 3.0 T, equally spaced in a toroidal array 1.52 m in major diameter. A 18 cm i.d. anode ring is located at each of the 12 midplanes and is maintained at high positive potentials by a dc power supply. Initial observations indicate electron temperatures from 10 to 150 eV, and ion kinetic temperatures from 200 eV to 1200 eV. Two modes of operation were observed, which depend on background pressure, and have different radial density profiles. Steady state neutron production was observed. The ion heating process in the bumpy torus appears to parallel closely the mechanism observed when the modified Penning discharge was operated in a simple magnetic mirror field.
