Approach and Model Used to Represent a Timeline Analysis for Security Design Enhancements

Next-generation reactors will be able to use risk to inform and performance base the licensing of many aspects of the reactor, facility, and site design, including attributes of physical security. There are several factors related to security, including site topography, reactor design, and physical protection system components, to consider when designing the physical protection system into the overall facility design and plan of operation. With the versatility of advanced reactors, especially micro reactors, methods are needed to simplify and quickly evaluate potential timelines for designing a site configuration. This report describes an approach to generate qualitative and quantitative insights using a risk-informed simulation. The modeling process is described in detail, focusing on three aspects: (1) the facility mission time (the time required to control the plant until safe), (2) the attacker timeline (the time to potential sabotage), and (3) the response timeline (the time to counter the facility attack). The modeling capabilities also are extended to include facility physical phenomena such as thermal-hydraulics and heat transfer to capture realistic representation of dynamic changes to a facility. While the plant models and examples are hypothetical and do not represent a real facility, these modeling approaches could be used for future security-by-design engineering in advanced reactors. The outputs and insights from the modeling approach may be used to modify and optimize the security posture of a facility by efficiently making modifications to the model and seeing the overall impact from the modification. Lastly, use of the approach described in this report can also provide the technical basis for a physical protection program, describing how the facility and security strategy will cope with off-normal events.

Simple Setup Miniaturization with Multiple Benefits for Green Chemistry in Nanoparticle Synthesis

The development of nanomaterials often relies on wet-chemical synthesis performed in reflux setups using round-bottom flasks. Here, an alternative approach to synthesize nanomaterials is presented that uses glass tubes designed for NMR analysis as reactors. This approach uses less solvent and energy, generates less waste, provides safer conditions, is less prone to contamination, and is compatible with high-throughput screening. The benefits of this approach are illustrated by an in breadth study with the synthesis of gold, iridium, osmium, and copper sulfide nanoparticles.

The acousto-ultrasonic approach

The nature and underlying rationale of the acousto-ultrasonic approach is reviewed, needed advanced signal analysis and evaluation methods suggested, and application potentials discussed. Acousto-ultrasonics is an NDE technique combining aspects of acoustic emission methodology with ultrasonic simulation of stress waves. This approach uses analysis of simulated stress waves for detecting and mapping variations of mechanical properties. Unlike most NDE, acousto-ultrasonics is less concerned with flaw detection than with the assessment of the collective effects of various flaws and material anomalies. Acousto-ultrasonics has been applied chiefly to laminated and filament-wound fiber reinforced composites. It has been used to assess the significant strength and toughness reducing effects that can be wrought by combinations of essentially minor flaws and diffuse flaw populations. Acousto-ultrasonics assesses integrated defect states and the resultant variations in properties such as tensile, shear, and flexural strengths and fracture resistance. Matrix cure state, porosity, fiber orientation, fiber volume fraction, fiber-matrix bonding, and interlaminar bond quality are underlying factors.

Improved finite element methodology for integrated thermal structural analysis

An integrated thermal-structural finite element approach for efficient coupling of thermal and structural analysis is presented. New thermal finite elements which yield exact nodal and element temperatures for one dimensional linear steady state heat transfer problems are developed. A nodeless variable formulation is used to establish improved thermal finite elements for one dimensional nonlinear transient and two dimensional linear transient heat transfer problems. The thermal finite elements provide detailed temperature distributions without using additional element nodes and permit a common discretization with lower order congruent structural finite elements. The accuracy of the integrated approach is evaluated by comparisons with analytical solutions and conventional finite element thermal structural analyses for a number of academic and more realistic problems. Results indicate that the approach provides a significant improvement in the accuracy and efficiency of thermal stress analysis for structures with complex temperature distributions.

A qualitative approach for recovering relative depths in dynamic scenes

This approach to dynamic scene analysis is a qualitative one. It computes relative depths using very general rules. The depths calculated are qualitative in the sense that the only information obtained is which object is in front of which others. The motion is qualitative in the sense that the only required motion data is whether objects are moving toward or away from the camera. Reasoning, which takes into account the temporal character of the data and the scene, is qualitative. This approach to dynamic scene analysis can tolerate imprecise data because in dynamic scenes the data are redundant.

Space crew radiation exposure analysis system based on a commercial stand-alone CAD system

Major improvements have recently been completed in the approach to spacecraft shielding analysis. A Computer-Aided Design (CAD)-based system has been developed for determining the shielding provided to any point within or external to the spacecraft. Shielding analysis is performed using a commercially available stand-alone CAD system and a customized ray-tracing subroutine contained within a standard engineering modeling software package. This improved shielding analysis technique has been used in several vehicle design projects such as a Mars transfer habitat, pressurized lunar rover, and the redesigned Space Station. Results of these analyses are provided to demonstrate the applicability and versatility of the system.

Clustering High-dimensional Toxicogenomics Data with Rare Signals

Toxicogenomics studies the gene and protein activities to drug treatments or toxic exposures. As the drugs and genes are numerous, toxicogenomics data are naturally high dimensional, with dimension sizes up to millions. In addition, the distribution of toxicogenomics data is oftentimes skewed, and they contain rare but important signals representing a cell or organism’s response to toxicity. The combination of high dimension and extremely skewed distribution of toxicogenomics data makes clustering analysis extremely challenging. We present our study of clustering toxicogenomics data using classical approaches such as principal component analysis as well as deep learning approaches such as auto-encoders. Our experiments show that these approaches fail to preserve rare signals and produce high-quality clusters. We then explore augmenting matrix factorization with deep learning techniques such as attention mechanism to produce latent representations for clustering. Our technique is able to better preserve rare signals after dimensionality reduction than prior approaches. Furthermore, we combine our augmented matrix factorization with a mechanism similar to autoencoder to balance separable clusters and low regeneration errors. Our experiments demonstrate better clustering with our proposed approach.

Differential GPS approaches to orbit determination of high-altitude earth satellites

Orbit determination of earth satellites using conventional (up-looking) differential GPS is limited to lower altitudes due to the finite antenna beamwidth and altitude of GPS satellites. Higher user satellites suffer from having short GPS view period; at sufficiently high altitudes, up-looking GPS visibility becomes so poor that no differential measurements are possible. For such higher user satellites, two alternative differential GPS approaches are suggested. A covariance analysis is performed investigating the capabilities of these approaches at various user satellite altitudes. Best differential GPS data types are identified for satellites within different altitude ranges. Error sources and other factors affecting the orbit determination accuracy are examined. Relative merits of these approaches are compared. When applied to QUASAT, the proposed earth orbiting radio telescope with an elliptical orbit, a sub-meter orbit determination accuracy is expected.

Hybrid structured/unstructured grid computations for the F/A-18 at high angle of attack

At high angles of attack, vortical flows play a crucial role in the maintenance of lift for fighter aircraft. However, under certain conditions, the vortical flow can have an adverse effect on the aircraft. On the F/A-18 the LEX vortex can impinge on the tail; at high angles of attack the unsteady flow from vortex bursting can cause structural fatigue on the vertical tails. At high angles of attack, the flow field can be quite complex, and a computational analysis challenging. A full configuration analysis with viscous structured grids can be computationally expensive and the task of generating the requisite grids can be quite difficult. To mitigate these difficulties and provide a medium-fidelity analysis tool, a hybrid structured/unstructured approach was adopted for this work. In this analysis, the formation and roll-up of the LEX vortex is computed with a structured Navier-Stokes solver, and the resulting vortex propagated downstream with an unstructured Euler solver.

Landsat Thematic Mapper studies of land cover spatial variability related to hydrology

Past accomplishments involving remote sensing based land-cover analysis for hydrologic applications are reviewed. Ongoing research in exploiting the increased spatial, radiometric, and spectral capabilities afforded by the TM on Landsats 4 and 5 is considered. Specific studies to compare MSS and TM for urbanizing watersheds, wetlands, and floodplain mapping situations show that only a modest improvement in classification accuracy is achieved via statistical per pixel multispectral classifiers. The limitations of current approaches to multispectral classification are illustrated. The objectives, background, and progress in the development of an alternative analysis approach for defining inputs to urban hydrologic models using TM are discussed.

A structural equation modeling approach to leveraging the power of extant sentiment analysis tools

Machine-derived sentiment analysis has become a pervasive and useful tool to address a wide array of issues in natural language processing. Leading technology companies such as Google now provide sentiment analysis tools (SATs) as readily accessible online products. Academic researchers develop and make available SATs to support the research enterprise. One of the major challenges with SATs is the inconsistencies in results among the various SATs. Consequently, the selection of a SAT for a specific purpose may significantly impact the application. This study addresses the foregoing problem by utilizing structural equation modeling to merge the outputs of SATs to develop a combined sentiment metric without the need for a labeled training dataset. This method is applicable to a wide range of text-based problems, is data-driven, and replicable. It was tested using three publicly available datasets and compared against seven different SATs. The results indicate that as a continous measure, the proposed method outperformed other SATs in the movie reviews and SemEval datasets, and achieved a tie for first place with IBM Watson on the Sentiment 140 dataset. Also, compared to the published major alternatives, the arithmetic mean solution, this approach performed better across these three datasets.

Multi-Fidelity Learning for Distribution System Voltage Probabilistic Analysis with High Penetration of PVs

This paper proposes a multi-fidelity learning approach for distribution voltage probabilistic analysis with high penetration of PVs. Unlike the existing machine learning-based approaches that require a large number of high fidelity data to achieve satisfactory results, our approach strategically leverage massive low fidelity data from inaccurate model simulations and limited high fidelity historical data. The key idea is to use low-fidelity data to establish an initial model and then the high-fidelity data to calibrate and correct the constructed low-fidelity model. This allows us to fuse low- and high-fidelity data, yielding a high fidelity prediction model. Results obtained from a realistic feeder in US with 80% penetration of PVs show that the proposed approach can achieve a similar accuracy to the one with a large number of high fidelity data. This significantly highlights the advantages of the proposed method as compared to existing data-hungry machine learning methods. Different levels of fidelity data and their impacts are also investigated.

Rapid depletion analysis of flowing-pebble reactor systems at equilibrium using SCALE

Several high-temperature gas-cooled reactor concepts (and more recently, salt-cooled designs such as the fluoride salt-cooled high-temperature reactor) feature core designs employing continuously circulating fuel pebbles. These reactor designs permit both continuous online refueling of fuel elements as well as higher overall achievable discharge burnups. However, rapid calculation of time-dependent fuel isotopic inventories proves challenging for this class of dynamic systems with current analysis tools. While iterative approaches employing coupled neutron transport have been developed to solve this issue, rapid depletion analysis techniques are needed to calculate time-dependent inventories for individual pebbles and batches (and thus the construction of full- core inventory at equilibrium). We propose a depletion analysis strategy for this type of system for cores at equilibrium. Drawing upon previous neutronic analysis of the PBMR-400 equilibrium core, we demonstrate the viability of developing collapsed one-group cross section libraries suitable for performing rapid depletion analyses with SCALE.
