Investigation of an electronic image enhancer for radiographs

Radiographs of nuclear and aerospace components were studied with a closed-circuit television system to determine the advantages of electronic enhancement in radiographic nondestructive evaluation. The radiographic images were examined on a television monitor under various degrees of magnification and enhancement. The enhancement was accomplished by generating a video signal whose amplitude is proportional to the rate of change of density. Points, lines, edges, and other density variations that are faintly registered in the original image are rendered in sharp relief. Examples of the applications of this mode of enhancement are discussed together with the system's dynamic response and resolution.

computer land use mapping via TV waveform analysis of space photography

An instrumentation and computer system which offers the potential for analyzing photogeographic distributions is described. To satisfy the requirement for computer acceptance, a television and waveform system was developed to transpose pictorial or iconic photo forms to the analytic. A video conversion was accomplished, and each pattern visible on the original photography was represented by a certain range of percentages. With spatial occurrences in digital form, a computer program was developed that could identify, analyze, and map geographic inputs.

Data compression/error correction digital test system. Appendix 2: Theory of operation

An overall block diagram of the DC/EC digital system test is shown. The system is divided into two major units: the transmitter and the receiver. In operation, the transmitter and receiver are connected only by a real or simulated transmission link. The system inputs consist of: (1) standard format TV video, (2) two channels of analog voice, and (3) one serial PCM bit stream.

NASA work unit system users manual

The NASA Work Unit System is a management information system for research tasks (i.e., work units) performed under NASA grants and contracts. It supplies profiles to indicate how much effort is being expended to what types of research, where the effort is being expended, and how funds are being distributed. The user obtains information by entering requests on the keyboard of a time-sharing terminal. Responses are received as video displays or typed messages at the terminal, or as lists printed in the computer room for subsequent delivery by messenger.

Bonanza project, 1971

Research on the application of remote sensing techniques to the mineral industry stresses photointerpretation by human interpreter experienced in the extraction of geological information from aerial color and multiband photographs and from thermal scanner imagery. Also considered are optical and digital image enhancement, multiband color additive projection, video image processing, and computer reduction and analysis of infrared spectrometry. Evaluation of those parameters which have the most contrast between adjacent rock formations and which can be remotely sensed establish the following most useful geological characteristics: Topographic landform, color, albedo, and surface temperature.

A unified approach to the classification of visual data systems.

Description of an approach to attaining a unified means of characterizing film, TV, and optical data systems. The concept is based on the premise that all of these imaging systems can be described by an equation similar to the ideal imaging system described by Rose (1948). This technique permits the direct comparison of film and TV performance without converting speed, film resolution lines, TV resolution lines, highlight output current and video bandwidth into compatible units, only to find some essential element of the conversion has been omitted from the particular specification in use. Most important, it permits system performance criteria to be based on input and output criteria without extensive manipulation of the elements between input and output.

The Skylab communications system.

Skylab is an experimental manned space station which will be operated by three astronauts intermittently over eight months in 1973. It will be in a 235 nautical mile, 50 degree inclination orbit. The communication system includes an onboard audio distribution hard-line network with 13 stations; a teleprinter for recording messages from the ground; telemetry, voice and television links; an onboard video distribution network. The radio frequencies system also includes radiometer and scatterometer earth-scanning sensors operating at 13.9 GHz and 1.4 GHz. The overall Skylab Program is discussed briefly and the communications system is described in more detail.

Remote control and navigation tests for application to long-range lunar surface exploration.

A vehicle system has been built and tested to investigate some of the unknown factors with regard to the operation of a remotely controlled vehicle on the surface of the moon. A general vehicle system description is presented, giving attention to the wheel drive subsystem, the steering subsystem, the power system, the control console, the command subsystem, the television subsystem, the telemetry subsystem, and the navigation subsystem. The remote control driving station consists of the antenna system, the video display system, the instrument and control panel, the data panel, and the steering and throttle controls. Initial tests with the vehicle and the remote driving station were conducted in March and April 1971.

Digital TV image enhancement system

Efficient, digital image-enhancement process has been developed for high-resolution slow-scan TV images. Scan converter is no longer subject to registration errors, which become more serious as resolution increases. To implement feedback image enhancement system, digital processing is used; otherwise there is excessive loss of image information, particularly in video delay lines.

Digital slope-threshold data compressor

Slope-threshold compression scheme for telemetered video data is efficient, and its principle of operation is as follows: when slope of raw data exceeds threshold decision reference, previous sample is transmitted. All-digital design is more economical than analog system. It exhibits well-defined accuracy, provides unlimited storage time, and is convenient and reliable.

Estimation of automobile-driver describing function from highway tests using the double steering wheel

The automobile-driver describing function for lateral position control was estimated for three subjects from frequency response analysis of straight road test results. The measurement procedure employed an instrumented full size sedan with known steering response characteristics, and equipped with a lateral lane position measuring device based on video detection of white stripe lane markings. Forcing functions were inserted through a servo driven double steering wheel coupling the driver to the steering system proper. Random appearing, Gaussian, and transient time functions were used. The quasi-linear models fitted to the random appearing input frequency response characterized the driver as compensating for lateral position error in a proportional, derivative, and integral manner. Similar parameters were fitted to the Gabor transformed frequency response of the driver to transient functions. A fourth term corresponding to response to lateral acceleration was determined by matching the time response histories of the model to the experimental results. The time histories show evidence of pulse-like nonlinear behavior during extended response to step transients which appear as high frequency remnant power.

Evaluate ERTS imagery for mapping and detection of changes of snowcover on land and on glaciers

The author has identified the following significant results. The area of snow cover on land was determined from ERTS-1 imagery. Snow cover in specific drainage basins was measured with the Stanford Research Institute console by electronically superimposing basin outlines on imagery, with video density slicing to measure areas. Snow covered area and snowline altitudes were also determined by enlarging ERTS-1 imagery 1:250,000 and using a transparent map overlay. Under very favorable conditions, snowline altitude was determined to an accuracy of about 60 m. Ability to map snow cover or to determine snowline altitude depends primarily on cloud cover and vegetation and secondarily on slope, terrain roughness, sun angle, radiometric fidelity, and amount of spectral information available. Glacier accumulation area ratios were determined from ERTS-1 imagery. Also, subtle flow structures, undetected on aerial photographs, were visible. Surging glaciers were identified, and the changes resulting from the surge of a large glacier were measured as were changes in tidal glacier termini.
