Lunar ephemeris and selenographic coordinates of the earth and sun for 1977 and 1978

Ephemeris data are presented in sections for each month for 1977 and 1978 to provide a time history of lunar coordinates and related geometric information. A NASA Manned Spacecraft Center modification of an ephmeris tape was used to calculate and plot coordinates of the earth, moon, and sun. The ephemeris is referenced to the mean vernal equinox at the nearest beginning of a Besselian year. Therefore, the reference equinox changes from one year to the next between June 30 and July 1. The apparent discontinuity in the data is not noticeable in the graphical presentation, but can be observed in the digital output. The mean equator of epoch is used in all cases. The computer program used to compute and plot the ephemeris data is described in the appendix.

Lunar ephemeris and selenographic coordinates of the earth and sun for 1981 and 1982

Ephemeris data are presented in sections for each month for 1981 and 1982 to provide a time history of lunar coordinates and related geometric information. A NASA Manned Spacecraft Center (MSC) modification of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory ephemeris tape was used to calculate and plot coordinates of the earth, moon, and sun. For 1966 to 1970, the same type of data presentation has been prepared in informal MSC documents. The data for 1971 to 1980 and 1983 and 1984 are presented. The computer program used to compute and plot the ephemeris data is described.

An application of interactive graphics to neutron spectrometry

The use of interactive graphics is presented as an attractive method for performing multi-parameter data analysis of proton recoil distributions to determine neutron spectra. Interactive graphics allows the user to view results on-line as the program is running and to maintain maximum control over the path along which the calculation will proceed. Other advantages include less time to obtain results and freedom from handling paper tapes and IBM cards.

Inventory of forest and rangeland and detection of forest stress

The author has identified the following significant results. Seventy-two ground sensors were interfaced with three DCP'S at the Black Hills test site. Unfortunately, the transmitters had to be returned for modification and forestry sensed data is not available. The DCP's did operate properly from the Berkeley laboratory and data were recovered from the Goldstone and Alaska stations via Goddard. Replicated training sets and test sets have been selected from all three test site areas in preparation for the receipt of ERTS imagery and digital tapes. From 600 and 800 points have been selected at each site location and UTM coordinates determined. Templates are being made of these sets. As of September 1, ERTS-generated data had not been received and no statements can be made regarding quality or suitability for forest and range experiments. Aerial photography (scale 1:32,000) of the Manitou (226 C) and Black Hills (226 A) sites was taken with CIR in June. Various scales (1:2,000; 1:10,000; 1:20,000; and 1:40,000) of 70 mm photographs were obtained at Manitou with normal color, CIR, and panchromatic in August.

Filament-wound graphite/epoxy rocket motor case

The fabrication procedures are described for a filament-wound rocket motor case, approximately 56 cm long x 71 cm diameter, utilizing high tensile strength graphite fibers. The process utilized Fiberite Hy-E-1330B prepreg tape which consists of Courtaulds HTS fibers in a temperature-sensitive epoxy matrix. This fabrication effort, with resultant design, material and process recommendations, substantiates the manufacturing feasibility of graphite/epoxy rocket motor cases in the 56 cm x 71 cm size range.

Analysis of radiation and meteoroid satellite data

The data obtained in earth orbit by the Radiation and Meteoroid Satellite (RMS) were interpreted and reduced to a form which will be usable by future space experimenters. The required tasks are detailed. Computer programs were written which lifted the raw data and associated emphemeris data from the GFE magnetic tapes. The engineering data was then used to evaluate the performance of the spacecraft and the experiments. The radiation data was used to prepare flux, spectral, and dose maps of the South Atlantic magnetic anomaly where possible. The meteoroid data was used to determine a rough estimate of the meteoroid flux and in general evaluate the performance of the thin-film meteoroid sensors. The degree of success of the RMS mission was evaluated in light of the separation anomaly which occurred between RMS and OFO during launch.

Automated geologic mapping using rock reflectances.

Investigation of the feasibility of preparing geologic maps automatically through computer processing of calibrated narrow-band visible and near IR reflectivity data collected with a 12-channel scanner. Five procedures were followed in the computer analysis of the radiances recorded as voltages on analog magnetic tape. Three recognition maps have been generated iteratively using a progressively more complex classification scheme. The overall accuracy of the first recognition map was 80%, but the discrimination of the limestone and dolomite was only 50-60%. All three maps are very accurate outcrop maps. The results demonstrate the feasibility of automated geologic mapping in this relatively simple setting.

Robust delta modulation.

A new Robust Delta Modulator configuration is presented. The system is optimum in the sense of minimizing the mean square error. Under certain conditions it is shown that the optimum system reduces to an enhanced Abate scheme. The optimum system, obtained by Song, uses the polarity of the past two samples and the signal estimates, to obtain the appropriate step size. Since the signal statistics are estimated by the system they are not needed a priori. The system has been constructed and tested. Experimental pictures and voice tapes are presented.

Development of boron epoxy rocket motor chambers.

A 71 cm diameter 74 cm length boron/epoxy composite rocket motor chamber was designed based on the geometric configuration of the JPL Applications Technology Satellite titanium alloy apogee motor chamber. Because analyses showed large stress concentrations in the domes, the configuration was modified using the same basic constraints for openings and attachments. The rocket motor chamber was then fabricated by filament winding with boron/epoxy tape and hydrostatically tested to failure at 264 N/sq cm, 57.2 N/sq cm above the design value. Two more rocket motor chambers were fabricated with the same basic constraints, but shortened to 57.6 cm for a smaller propellant load. The first of these short chambers failed in proof because of filament winding fabrication difficulties. The second chamber was successfully fabricated and passed the hydrostatic proof test.

Adsorption of carbon monoxide and hydrogen on graphite.

Adsorption of carbon monoxide and hydrogen was investigated on three graphites: a high-density pyrolytic graphite, a small-grain extruded graphite, and a processed pyrolytic graphite tape. The sticking probability of CO was found to decrease rapidly as the average surface coverage approached 0.01 monolayer. Lower sticking probabilities were observed on the highly oriented pyrolytic graphite which indicated that adsorption occurs principally on the edge atoms. There is negligible adsorption of molecular hydrogen on graphite that has been heated to 2400 K in vacuo.

The shadow band phenomenon.

Observation of shadow bands during the solar eclipse of Mar. 7, 1970. Data were gathered by recording onto magnetic tape of the output from six collimated photocells whose spectral responses ranged from the ultraviolet to the infrared, and by visual and mechanical measurement of the orientation and motion of the bands. The recorded data were later processed using the output from a frequency spectrum analyzer. Most of the energy of the shadow bands ranges between 1 and 25 Hz, and appears not unlike plots of scintillation spectra. The onset, amplitude, and duration of the shadow bands seem to be spectrally related to the limb darkening of the sun's photosphere. Other results of the experiment conclusively indicate that the shadow band phenomenon is a manifestation of atmospheric turbulence in the form of air packets of different density from that of their environment (density schlieren), made visible by the light from the crescent sun.

Composites - Lighter and cheaper.

Composite engineering materials have two distinct parts, including the load-bearing filaments and the matrix. Fibers can range from glass to boron and graphite. Matrix constituents include epoxies for lower temperatures and metals for higher temperatures. Composites appear as tape or combined with metal in structural shapes. The increased use of composites will reduce over-all per pound manufacturing costs. Two major deterrents to further application of composites in advanced commercial transports include a shortage of cost-effective structural design concepts and a lack of confidence in the life characteristics. A program has been outlined by NASA that will, if implemented, provide considerable in-service life experience with structural components on commercial transports.

Rate distortion from planet to paper.

The overall data link commences with the lens of the spacecraft camera, followed by the telemetry format, and then the passing of the data onto a spacecraft tape recorder for later transmission at a slower rate. The properties of the individual pieces of information are described, and rate distortion theory is discussed. The video channel from the standpoint of information theory, and fidelity criteria for planetary video are considered. Areas for further research are indicated.

Computational work and time on finite machines.

Measures of the computational work and computational delay required by machines to compute functions are given. Exchange inequalities are developed for random access, tape, and drum machines to show that product inequalities between storage and time, number of drum tracks and time, number of bits in an address and time, etc., must be satisfied to compute finite functions on bounded machines.
