The effects of cutouts on the buckling of thin shells

A study of the effects of circular and rectangular cutouts on the buckling of thin cylinders loaded by axial compression, bending, and torsion is presented. Experimentally determined design curves for the various loading conditions are provided. Some analytical verification of the experimental results is also provided by a finite-element computer program.

Nondestructive evaluation of electroformed outer shells for regeneratively cooled thrust chambers

Electroforming is presently a prime technique for producing the outer jackets of regeneratively cooled thrust chambers for rocket engines. Good bond integrity of the electroformed joints adjacent to the coolant passages is important to the useful service life of these aerospace systems. This investigation demonstrated that nondestructive evaluation techniques such as ultrasonic 'C' scan, holography, and acoustic emission are capable of detecting low integrity bonds which could lead to premature failures in the subject hardware.

Investigation of the shell stars omicron and theta Per, and of the eclipsing binary beta Lyr

All three stars showed rather complicated spectra, which require a very detailed spectroscopic analysis. The far UV spectrum of Beta Lyrae is clearly peculiar, with a multitude of emission lines not observed on any other star so far scanned with Copernicus. This made this star at once the most interesting and also, in a sense, easier to study. The other two stars display a spectrum rich in absorption lines, some of them being fairly broad (as expected for photospheric lines of rapidly rotating objects), some sharp. The later were clearly non-photospheric lines. An attempt was made to distinguish the circumstellar from the interstellar components.

LaRC design analysis report for National Transonic Facility for 9% nickel tunnel shell. Volume 1: Finite difference analysis of cone/cylinder junction

The results of extensive computer (finite element, finite difference and numerical integration), thermal, fatigue, and special analyses of critical portions of a large pressurized, cryogenic wind tunnel (National Transonic Facility) are presented. The computer models, loading and boundary conditions are described. Graphic capability was used to display model geometry, section properties, and stress results. A stress criteria is presented for evaluation of the results of the analyses. Thermal analyses were performed for major critical and typical areas. Fatigue analyses of the entire tunnel circuit are presented.
