The evaluation of a deformable diffraction grating for a stigmatic EUV spectroheliometer

A second toroidal replica grating was found to have an aspect ratio within 10% of the desire value. The aspect ratio of replica toroidal gratings is coming out somewhat low. Whether this is caused by some relaxation in the epoxy or some residual error in the setup when the replication is made from the deformable submaster grating will be determined. The first imaging tests at EUV wavelengths near 500 A were carried out. The initial results are most encouraging with blur sizes of the order of, or less than, 40 microns. Further focussing and additional photographic tests will be carried out, and preparations made for the first photoelectric measurements of the image quality using the (256 x 1024)-pixel MAMA detection system. The visible-light (256 x 1024)-pixel MAMA detector tube has completed initial evaluation.

Diffraction Analysis of Mesh Deployable Reflector Antennas

A formulation and many representative numerical results for mesh reflector antennas are presented. The reflection coefficient matrix for the prescribed mesh configuration was determined and the local coordinate system of the mesh cells at each point on the curved reflector surface was accentuated. A novel strip aperture model was used to formulate the transmission coefficient matrix for a variety of mesh cell configurations. Numerical data are tailored to the dimensions of a conceptually designed land mobile satellite system (LMSS) which employs a large mesh deployable offset parabolic antenna. Results are shown for an offset parabolic reflector with mesh surfaces similar to the mesh surface of tracking and data relay satellite system (TDRSS).

Osmium coated diffraction grating in the Space Shuttle environment - Performance

Samples coated with osmium were flown on the early Shuttle test flights, and on the return of these samples, the osmium coating was found to have disappeared, evidently due to the oxidation of the material in the atomic oxygen atmosphere. An instrument flown on the Spacelab 1 mission comprised an array of five spectrometers covering the extreme ultraviolet (EUV) to near-IR wavelengths. The EUV spectrometer contained an osmium-coated reflective grating located fairly deep within the instruments. Here, results of an assessment of the reflectivity and stability of the osmium surface over the course of the ten-day mission are reported. It is concluded that the osmium reflective coating remained stable relative to the spectrometer coated with MgF2 over the course of the mission. In addition, the ratio of sensitivity of these two spectrometers did not change in any major way from the time of the laboratory calibration until the time of flight two years later. Any changes are within the 50-percent calibration uncertainty.

A simple method of obtaining concentration depth-profiles from X-ray diffraction

The construction of composition profiles from X-ray intensity bands was investigated. The intensity band-to-composition profile transformation utilizes a solution which can be easily evaluated. The technique can be applied to thin films and thick speciments for which the variation of lattice parameters, linear absorption coefficient, and reflectivity with composition are known. A deconvolution scheme with corrections for the instrumental broadening and ak-alfadoublet is discussed.

Arsenic-induced intensity oscillations in reflection high-energy electron diffraction measurements

A technique of arsenic-induced RHEED intensity oscillations has been used to accurately measure arsenic incorporation rates as a function of substrate temperature during the homoepitaxial growths of both GaAs and InAs by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). Measurements were made at growth temperatures from 350 to 650 C and at arsenic fluxes of 0.1 to 10.0 monolayer/s. The method measures only the arsenic actually incorporated into the growing film and does not include the arsenic lost in splitting the arsenic tetramers or lost by evaporation from the sample.

Diffraction Analysis of Antennas With Mesh Surfaces

Strip-aperture model replaces wire-grid model. Far-field radiation pattern of antenna with mesh reflector calculated more accurately with new strip-aperture model than with wire-grid model of reflector surface. More adaptable than wire-grid model to variety of practical configurations and decidedly superior for reflectors in which mesh-cell width exceeds mesh thickness. Satisfies reciprocity theorem. Applied where mesh cells are no larger than tenth of wavelength. Small cell size permits use of simplifying approximation that reflector-surface current induced by electromagnetic field is present even in apertures. Approximation useful in calculating far field.

Diffractively Coupled, Refractively Guided Lasers

Semiconductor-laser arrays more reliable, more powerful, and easier to make. Improved design intended to eliminate undesired electromagnetic modes and mode shifts sometimes occuring in gain-guided variety. Reflected from mirror/window at end of common resonator section of laser, energy refracted from each laser enters adjacent laser. Mutual coupling establishes phase relationships among lasers. Monolithic laser array made by standard epitaxial techniques. Made in part with polymeric materials to mitigate some deleterious effects of all-expitaxial processing. Potential applications include optical communications, ranging, printing, and recording.

Space infrared telescope facility wide field and diffraction limited array camera (IRAC)

IRAC focal plane detector technology was developed and studies of alternate focal plane configurations were supported. While any of the alternate focal planes under consideration would have a major impact on the Infrared Array Camera, it was possible to proceed with detector development and optical analysis research based on the proposed design since, to a large degree, the studies undertaken are generic to any SIRTF imaging instrument. Development of the proposed instrument was also important in a situation in which none of the alternate configurations has received the approval of the Science Working Group.

Structural characterization and gas reactions of small metal particles by high resolution in-situ TEM (Transmission Electron Microscopy) and TED (Transmission Electron Diffraction)

The detection and size analysis of small metal particles supported on amorphous substrates becomes increasingly difficult when the particle size approaches that of the phase contrast background structures of the support. An approach of digital image analysis, involving Fourier transformation of the original image, filtering, and image reconstruction was studied with respect to the likelihood of unambiguously detecting particles of less than 1 nm diameter on amorphous substrates from a single electron micrograph.

Diffraction efficiency of photothermoplastic layers for the recording of discrete holograms

An experimental and theoretical study of the dependence of eta of a digital phase Fourier hologram of a point object on the amount of deformation delta and the discrete-structure parameters representing the hologram is detailed. An expression is given for eta. Experiments were performed on photothermoplastic layers based on polyvinyl carbazole and trinitrofluorenone charge transfer complexes. The maximum eta, 2%, is found at delta = 0.56 micron.

Analysis of airborne antenna systems using geometrical theory of diffraction and moment method computer codes

Computer codes have been developed to analyze antennas on aircraft and in the presence of scatterers. The purpose of this study is to use these codes to develop accurate computer models of various aircraft and antenna systems. The antenna systems analyzed are a P-3B L-Band antenna, an A-7E UHF relay pod antenna, and traffic advisory antenna system installed on a Bell Long Ranger helicopter. Computer results are compared to measured ones with good agreement. These codes can be used in the design stage of an antenna system to determine the optimum antenna location and save valuable time and costly flight hours.

The evaluation of a deformable diffraction grating for a stigmatic EUV spectroheliometer

A high-efficiency, extreme ultraviolet (EUV) imaging spectrometer is constructed and tested. The spectrometer employs a concave toroidal grating illuminated at normal incidence in a Rowland circle mounting and has only one reflecting surface. The toroidal grating has been fabricated by a new technique employing an elastically-deformable sub-master grating replicated in a spherical form and then mechanically distorted to produce the desired aspect ratio of the toroidal surface for stigmatic imaging over the selected wavelength range. The fixed toroidal grating used in the spectrometer is then replicated from this surface. Photographic tests and initial photoelectric tests with a two-dimensional, pulse-counting detector system verify the image quality of the toroidal grating at wavelengths near 600 A. The results of these tests and the basic designs of two instruments which could employ the imaging spectrometer for astrophysical investigations in space are described; i.e., a high-resolution EUV spectroheliometer for studies of the solar chromosphere, transition region, and corona; and an EUV spectroscopic telescope for studies of non-solar objects.

Imaging extreme ultraviolet spectrometer employing a single toroidal diffraction grating - The initial evaluation

The design and test results of a high-efficiency EUV imaging spectrometer employing a concave toroidal grating which is illuminated at normal incidence in a Rowland circle mounting and has only one reflecting surface are discussed. Photographic tests and initial photoelectric tests with a two-dimensional pulse-counting detector system demonstrate the excellent image quality of the grating at wavelengths near 600 A. Applications of the spectrometer for the study of nonsolar objects and solar regions (including the chromosphere, transition region, and corona) are considered.

Observations of diffractive interstellar scintillation phenomena

Recent observations of radio-source angular broadening and pulsar dynamic spectra are reviewed, with the goal of determining the spectrum of the interstellar density irregularities and the sources which generate the turbulence. Measurements of angular broadening and certain aspects of pulsar dynamic spectra favor quasi-Kolmogorov density spectra, which are power-law with an index less than 4. However, pulsar dynamic spectra frequently display phenomena such as drifting bands or quasi-periodic structures which seem to require spectra with more power at long wavenumbers than can be supplied by quasi-Kolmogorov spectra.
