Porous and Water Stable 2D Hybrid Metal Halide with Broad Light Emission and Selective H 2 O Vapor Sorption

Here, in this work we report a strategy for generating porosity in hybrid metal halide materials using molecular cages that serve as both structure-directing agents and counter-cations. Reaction of the [2.2.2] cryptand (DHS) linker with Pb II in acidic media gave rise to the first porous and water-stable 2D metal halide semiconductor (DHS) 2 Pb 5 Br 14 . The corresponding material is stable in water for a year, while gas and vapor-sorption studies revealed that it can selectively and reversibly adsorb H 2 O and D 2 O at room temperature (RT). Solid-state NMR measurements and DFT calculations verified the incorporation of H 2 O and D 2 O in the organic linker cavities and shed light on their molecular configuration. In addition to porosity, the material exhibits broad light emission centered at 617 nm with a full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 284 nm (0.96 eV). The recorded water stability is unparalleled for hybrid metal halide and perovskite materials, while the generation of porosity opens new pathways towards unexplored applications (e.g. solid-state batteries) for this class of hybrid semiconductors.

Resolving the Heat Generated from ZrO 2 Atomic Layer Deposition Surface Reactions

Abstract In situ pyroelectric calorimetry and spectroscopic ellipsometry were used to investigate surface reactions in atomic layer deposition (ALD) of zirconium oxide (ZrO 2 ). Calibrated and time‐resolved in situ ALD calorimetry provides new insights into the thermodynamics and kinetics of saturating surface reactions for tetrakis(dimethylamino)zirconium(IV) (TDMAZr) and water. The net ALD reaction heat ranged from 0.197 mJ cm −2 at 76 °C to 0.155 mJ cm −2 at 158 °C, corresponding to an average of 4.0 eV/Zr at all temperatures. A temperature dependence for reaction kinetics was not resolved over the range investigated. The temperature dependence of net reaction heat and distribution among metalorganic and oxygen source exposure is attributed to factors including growth rate, equilibrium surface hydroxylation, and the extent of the reaction. ZrO 2 ‐forming surface reactions were investigated computationally using DFT methods to better understand the influence of surface hydration on reaction thermodynamics.

Evidence of a Uranium‐Paddlewheel Node in a Catecholate‐Based Metal–Organic Framework

Abstract The interactions between uranium and non‐innocent organic species are an essential component of fundamental uranium redox chemistry. However, they have seldom been explored in the context of multidimensional, porous materials. Uranium‐based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) offer a new angle to study these interactions, as these self‐assembled species stabilize uranium species through immobilization by organic linkers within a crystalline framework, while potentially providing a method for adjusting metal oxidation state through coordination of non‐innocent linkers. We report the synthesis of the MOF NU‐1700 , assembled from U 4+ ‐paddlewheel nodes and catecholate‐based linkers. We propose this highly unusual structure, which contains two U 4+ ions in a paddlewheel built from four linkers—a first among uranium materials—as a result of extensive characterization via powder X‐ray diffraction (PXRD), sorption, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), in addition to density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Automated Generation of Microkinetics for Heterogeneously Catalyzed Reactions Considering Correlated Uncertainties**

Abstract The study presents an ab‐initio based framework for the automated construction of microkinetic mechanisms considering correlated uncertainties in all energetic parameters and estimation routines. 2000 unique microkinetic models were generated within the uncertainty space of the BEEF‐vdW functional for the oxidation reactions of representative exhaust gas emissions from stoichiometric combustion engines over Pt(111) and compared to experiments through multiscale modeling. The ensemble of simulations stresses the importance of considering uncertainties. Within this set of first‐principles‐based models, it is possible to identify a microkinetic mechanism that agrees with experimental data. This mechanism can be traced back to a single exchange‐correlation functional, and it suggests that Pt(111) could be the active site for the oxidation of light hydrocarbons. The study provides a universal framework for the automated construction of reaction mechanisms with correlated uncertainty quantification, enabling a DFT‐constrained microkinetic model optimization for other heterogeneously catalyzed systems.

Stabilization Of The CN 3 5− Anion In Recoverable High‐pressure Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) Oxoguanidinates

Abstract A series of isostructural Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) oxoguanidinates was synthesized under high‐pressure (25–54 GPa) high‐temperature (2000–3000 K) conditions in laser‐heated diamond anvil cells. The crystal structure of this novel class of compounds was determined via synchrotron single‐crystal X‐ray diffraction (SCXRD) as well as corroborated by X‐ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) solids are composed of the hitherto unknown CN 3 5− guanidinate anion—deprotonated guanidine. Changes in unit cell volumes and compressibility of Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) (Ln=La, Eu, Gd, Tb, Ho, Yb) compounds are found to be dictated by the lanthanide contraction phenomenon. Decompression experiments show that Ln 3 O 2 (CN 3 ) compounds are recoverable to ambient conditions. The stabilization of the CN 3 5− guanidinate anion at ambient conditions provides new opportunities in inorganic and organic synthetic chemistry.

Rapid Polyolefin Hydrogenolysis by a Single‐Site Organo‐Tantalum Catalyst on a Super‐Acidic Support: Structure and Mechanism

The novel electrophilic organo-tantalum catalyst AlS/TaNp x (1) (Np=neopentyl) is prepared by chemisorption of the alkylidene Np 3 Ta=CH t Bu onto highly Brønsted acidic sulfated alumina (AlS). Here, the proposed catalyst structure is supported by EXAFS, XANES, ICP, DRIFTS, elemental analysis, and SSNMR measurements and is in good agreement with DFT analysis. Catalyst 1 is highly effective for the hydrogenolysis of diverse linear and branched hydrocarbons, ranging from C2 to polyolefins. To the best of our knowledge, 1 exhibits one of the highest polyolefin hydrogenolysis activities (9,800 (CH 2 units) ⋅ mol(Ta) −1 ⋅ h −1 at 200 °C/17 atm H 2 ) reported to date in the peer-reviewed literature. Unlike the AlS/ZrNp 2 analog, the Ta catalyst is more thermally stable and offers multiple potential C−C bond activation pathways. For hydrogenolysis, AlS/TaNp x is effective for a wide variety of pre- and post-consumer polyolefin plastics and is not significantly deactivated by standard polyolefin additives at typical industrial concentrations.

Lewis Acid Supported Nickel Nitrenoids

Metalation of the polynucleating ligand F,tbs LH 6 (1,3,5-C 6 H 9 (NC 6 H 3 −4-F−2-NSiMe 2 t Bu) 3 ) with two equivalents of Zn(N(SiMe 3 ) 2 ) 2 affords the dinuclear product ( F,tbs LH 2 )Zn 2 (1), which can be further deprotonated to yield ( F,tbs L)Zn 2 Li 2 (OEt 2 ) 4 (2). Transmetalation of 2 with NiCl 2 (py) 2 yields the heterometallic, trinuclear cluster ( F,tbs L)Zn 2 Ni(py) (3). Reduction of 3 with KC 8 affords [KC 222 ][( F,tbs L)Zn 2 Ni] (4) which features a monovalent Ni centre. Addition of 1-adamantyl azide to 4 generates the bridging μ 3 -nitrenoid adduct [K(THF) 3 ][( F,tbs L)Zn 2 Ni(μ 3 -NAd)] (5). EPR spectroscopy reveals that the anionic cluster possesses a doublet ground state (S = 1/2). Cyclic voltammetry of 5 reveals two fully reversible redox events. The dianionic nitrenoid [K 2 (THF) 9 ][( F,tbs L)Zn 2 Ni(μ 3 -NAd)] (6) was isolated and characterized while the neutral redox isomer was observed to undergo both intra- and intermolecular H-atom abstraction processes. Here, Ni K-edge XAS studies suggest a divalent oxidation state for the Ni centres in both the monoanionic and dianionic [Zn 2 Ni] nitrenoid complexes. However, DFT analysis suggests Ni-borne oxidation for 5.

Rational Design and Reticulation of Infinite qbe Rod Secondary Building Units into Metal–Organic Frameworks through a Global Desymmetrization Approach for Inverse C 3 H 8 /C 3 H 6 Separation

Abstract The development of reticular chemistry has enabled the construction of a large array of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with diverse net topologies and functions. However, dominating this class of materials are those built from discrete/finite secondary building units (SBUs), yet the designed synthesis of frameworks involving infinite rod‐shaped SBUs remain underdeveloped. Here, by virtue of a global linker desymmetrization approach, we successfully targeted a novel Cu‐MOF (Cu‐ASY) incorporating infinite Cu‐carboxylate rod SBUs with its structure determined by micro electron diffraction (MicroED) crystallography. Interestingly, the rod SBU can be simplified as a unique cylindric sphere packingqbetubule made of [4 3 .6 2 ] tiles, which further connect the tritopic linkers to give a newly discovered 3,5‐connectedgfcnet. Cu‐ASY is a permanent ultramicroporous material featuring 1D channels with highly inert surfaces and shows a preferential adsorption of propane (C 3 H 8 ) over propene (C 3 H 6 ). The efficiency of C 3 H 8 selective Cu‐ASY is validated by multicycle breakthrough experiments, giving C 3 H 6 productivity of 2.2 L/kg. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that C 3 H 8 molecules form multiple C−H⋅⋅⋅π and atypical C−H⋅⋅⋅ H−C van der Waals interactions with the inner nonpolar surfaces. This work therefore highlights the linker desymmetrization as an encouraging and intriguing strategy for achieving unique MOF structures and properties.

A Semi‐Automated, High‐Throughput Approach for the Synthesis and Identification of Highly Photo‐Cytotoxic Iridium Complexes

Abstract The discovery of new compounds with pharmacological properties is usually a lengthy, laborious and expensive process. Thus, there is increasing interest in developing workflows that allow for the rapid synthesis and evaluation of libraries of compounds with the aim of identifying leads for further drug development. Herein, we apply combinatorial synthesis to build a library of 90 iridium(III) complexes (81 of which are new) over two synthesise‐and‐test cycles, with the aim of identifying potential agents for photodynamic therapy. We demonstrate the power of this approach by identifying highly active complexes that are well‐tolerated in the dark but display very low nM phototoxicity against cancer cells. To build a detailed structure–activity relationship for this class of compounds we have used density functional theory (DFT) calculations to determine some key electronic parameters and study correlations with the experimental data. Finally, we present an optimised semi‐automated synthesise‐and‐test protocol to obtain multiplex data within 72 hours.

Cobalt‐Doped Bismuth Nanosheet Catalyst for Enhanced Electrochemical CO 2 Reduction to Electrolyte‐Free Formic Acid

Electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) reduction reaction (CO 2 RR) to valuable liquid fuels, such as formic acid/formate (HCOOH/HCOO − ) is a promising strategy for carbon neutrality. Enhancing CO 2 RR activity while retaining high selectivity is critical for commercialization. To address this, we developed metal-doped bismuth (Bi) nanosheets via a facile hydrolysis method. These doped nanosheets efficiently generated high-purity HCOOH using a porous solid electrolyte (PSE) layer. Among the evaluated metal-doped Bi catalysts, Co-doped Bi demonstrated improved CO 2 RR performance compared to pristine Bi, achieving ~90 % HCOO − selectivity and boosted activity with a low overpotential of ~1.0 V at a current density of 200 mA cm −2 . In a solid electrolyte reactor, Co-doped Bi maintained HCOOH Faradaic efficiency of ~72 % after a 100-hour operation under a current density of 100 mA cm −2 , generating 0.1 M HCOOH at 3.2 V. Density functional theory (DFT) results revealed that Co-doped Bi required a lower applied potential for HCOOH generation from CO 2 , due to stronger binding energy to the key intermediates OCHO* compared to pure Bi. In conclusion, this study shows that metal doping in Bi nanosheets modifies the chemical composition, element distribution, and morphology, improving CO 2 RR catalytic activity performance by tuning surface adsorption affinity and reactivity.

Facile Access to Organostibines via Selective Organic Superbase Catalyzed Antimony‐Carbon Protonolysis

The selective formation of antimony-carbon bonds via organic superbase catalysis under metal- and salt-free conditions is reported. Here, this novel approach utilizes electron-deficient stibine, Sb(C 6 F 5 ) 3 , to give upon base-catalyzed reactions with weakly acidic aromatic and heteroaromatic hydrocarbons access to a range of new aromatic and heteroaromatic stibines, respectively, with loss of C 6 HF 5 . Also, the significantly less electron-deficient stibines, Ph 2 SbC 6 F 5 and PhSb(C 6 F 5 ) 2 smoothly underwent base-catalyzed exchange reactions with a range of terminal alkynes to generate the stibines of formulae PhSb(C≡CPh) 2 , and Ph 2 SbC≡CR [R=C 6 H 5 , C 6 H 4 -NO 2 , COOEt, CH 2 Cl, CH 2 NEt 2 , CH 2 OSiMe 3 , Sb(C 6 H 5 ) 2 ], respectively. These formal substitution reactions proceed with high selectivity as only the C 6 F 5 groups serve as a leaving group to be liberated as C 6 HF 5 upon formal proton transfer from the alkyne. Kinetic studies of the base-catalyzed reaction of Ph 2 SbC 6 F 5 with phenyl acetylene to form Ph 2 SbC≡CPh and C 6 HF 5 suggested the empirical rate law to exhibit a first-order dependence with respect to the base catalyst, alkyne and stibine. DFT calculations support a pathway proceeding via a concerted σ-bond metathesis transition state, where the base catalyst activates the Sb-C 6 F 5 bond sequence through secondary bond interactions.

Copper‐Catalyzed C(sp 3 )−H α‐Acetylation: Generation of Quaternary Centers

Abstract α‐substituted ketones are important chemical targets as synthetic intermediates as well as functionalities in natural products and pharmaceuticals. We report the α‐acetylation of C(sp 3 )−H substrates R−H with arylmethyl ketones ArC(O)Me to provide α‐alkylated ketones ArC(O)CH 2 R at RT with t BuOO t Bu as oxidant via copper(I) ‐diketiminato catalysts. Proceeding via alkyl radicals R•, this method enables α‐substitution with bulky substituents without competing elimination that occurs in more traditional alkylation reactions between enolates and alkyl electrophiles. DFT studies suggest the intermediacy of copper(II) enolates [Cu II ](CH 2 C(O)Ar) that capture alkyl radicals R• to give R−CH 2 C(O)Ar outcompeting dimerization of the copper(II) enolate to give the 1,4‐diketone ArC(O)CH 2 CH 2 C(O)Ar.

Mastering the Copolymerization Behavior of Ethyl Cyanoacrylate as Gel Polymer Electrolyte for Lithium‐metal Battery Application

Polymers with strong electron-withdrawing groups (e.g., cyano-containing polymers) are attractive for a wide range of applications due to their high dielectric constant and outstanding electrochemical stability. However, the polymerization of such monomers is difficult to control with trace of water affording instant reactions, and copolymerization with other monomers without using strong acid is even more challenging. The present study demonstrates a facile approach enabling efficient and controllable copolymerization of ethyl cyanoacrylate (ECA) without adding undesired additives, achieving mechanically robust and high ion-conduction gel polymer electrolyte (GPE) for safe and long cycle-life lithium-metal batteries (LMBs). The incorporated dual-lithium salts, i.e., lithium difluoro(oxalato)borate (LiDFOB) and lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulphonyl)imide (LiTFSI) not only facilitate radical polymerization of ECA monomers by suppressing their anionic polymerization, but also promote the formation of high-ionic conducting GPE. The incorporated methyl methacrylate (MMA) monomer accelerates the radical polymerization of ECA (confirmed by DFT calculations), achieving controlled copolymerization of ECA-based copolymers. Here, the mechanically robust polymer network made by the ECA copolymer enables LMBs with both LFP cathodes and high-voltage LCO cathodes (4.5 V) operatable at different temperatures with ultra-long cycle life at 1 C (capacity retention of 81.1 % and 83.8 %, respectively, over 1000 cycles).

Reversible CO 2 Hydrogenation, Neutron Crystallography, and Hydride Reactivity of a Triiridium Heptahydride Complex

Here, the authors report the structure, reactivity, and catalytic utility of a triiridium complex, [Ir 3 H 6 (μ 3 -H)(PN) 3 ] 2+ (2-H, PN = (2-pyridyl)CH 2 PBu t 2 ). Despite its unusual stability to unsaturated organics, electrophiles, and even CF 3 SO 3 D, they find that complex 2-H catalyzes hydrogenation of CO 2 to formate (TON Ir = 9600) and reverse formic acid dehydrogenation (TON Ir = 54 400). The hydrogenation operates via a reactive intermediate [Ir 3 H 4 (μ-H) 4 (PN) 3 ] + (5). Neutron crystallography and DFT-supported neutron vibrational spectroscopy of 2-H reveal Ir─H bond lengths and elucidate the vibration modes within the Ir 3 H 7 core. Stoichiometric oxidation of 2-H produces four classes of iridium complexes of varied nuclearity and hydride structure: tetra- and pentanuclear clusters [Ir 3 H 6 (μ 3 -AuPPh 3 )(PN) 3 ] 2+ (2-Au) and [Ag{Ir 2 H 4 (μ-OAc)(PN) 2 } 2 ] 3+ (6) are generated using AuPPh 3 + and AgOAc, respectively. Further oxidation to class [Ir 2 H 3 (μ-X) 2 (PN) 2 ] + is possible with AgOAc, Hg(OAc) 2 , or I 2 . Finally, a TEMPO/HCl system completely oxidizes the hydrides and gives [Ir 2 Cl 4 (μ-Cl) 2 (PN) 2 ] (11).

Synthesis of Gold Hydride at High Pressure and High Temperature

Gold is an unreactive metal and its chemical interactions with hydrogen have only recently been explored. Here, in this study, we report the formation of gold hydride above 40 GPa and 2200 K in X-ray free electron laser heated diamond anvil cells using various hydrocarbons as hydrogen sources. Above 40 GPa, a hexagonal phase emerges close to the gold melting point, corresponding to a hydride with stoichiometry Au 2 H x , with x increasing from 0 to near 1 with pressure from 40 to 80 GPa. This is a high-temperature phase which reverts to face centered cubic gold on cooling to 295 K. Accompanying DFT-MD simulations are in excellent agreement with experiment and reveal the structure to consist of an hexagonal close packed gold lattice with atomic hydrogen disordered in the interstices. The hydrogen is superionic and exhibits high diffusivity through the crystalline gold lattice. Our results present the first solid-state binary compound of gold and hydrogen.

Enhancing Acidic Oxygen Evolution Activity by Controlling Oxidation State of Iridium

Iridium oxides with high oxidation states have been reported to be effective in enhancing the acidic oxygen evolution reaction (OER) performance. In this work, we develop ultrasmall IrO x nanoparticles (NPs) over titanium nitride (TiN), which undergoes surface oxidation under oxidative conditions to form oxygen‐modified TiN (oxi‐TiN), enabling the formation of highly oxidized Ir δ+ (δ > 4). This IrO x /oxi‐TiN catalyst delivers higher Ir mass activity than commercial IrO 2 , while comparable stability is maintained. The superior OER activity of IrO x /oxi‐TiN is further demonstrated in a proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE), requiring only 1.88 V to reach 3 A cm −2 , achieving the U.S. Department of Energy 2025 target (1.90 V at 3 A cm −2 ). In situ X‐ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) confirms that the superior OER activity of IrO x /oxi‐TiN originates from highly oxidized Ir δ+ under OER conditions. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal a general correlation between the oxidation state of Ir and OER overpotential. Specifically, the introduction of interfacial oxygen at the Ir/TiN interface increases the oxidation state of deposited Ir δ+ from δ < 4 to δ > 4, decreasing the OER overpotential. This study highlights the critical role of high oxidation states of Ir δ+ in enhancing OER activity, providing guidance for the development of advanced acidic OER catalysts.

Trigonal Planar Bis (carbene)Cu(I) Complexes Enable Divergent H 2 Activation with H 2 O for Accelerated Olefin Hydrogenation

CuH-catalyzed olefin hydrogenation is rare compared to those of carbonyl-derived substrates. Olefin insertion into Cu–H to form Cu-alkyl is ubiquitous; however, subsequent H 2 activation remains unknown to our knowledge. Herein, we investigated the transformations of β-H elimination, H 2 cleavage, and catalytic olefin hydrogenation in a series of linear and trigonal planar Cu(I)-alkyl complexes supported by monodentate N-heterocyclic carbene and bidentate naphthyridine- bis (carbene) ligands, respectively. Contrary to unreactive linear species, trigonal planar variants promote β-H elimination, hydrogenolysis, and catalytic hydrogenation of unactivated alkenes at mild temperatures and H 2 pressure. The rare isolation of a naphthyridine- bis (carbene)CuH monomer further affirms two predominant competing pathways for H 2 cleavage of metal–ligand cooperativity at Cu(I)-alkyl or internal electrophilic substitution at Cu(I)-OH. Employing either isolated or in situ generated Cu(I)-OH complex, via protonolysis of alkyl precatalyst by adventitious water, significantly accelerated catalysis compared to that operating primarily by the metal–ligand cooperativity pathway. DFT calculations and energy decomposition analysis on the disparate β-H elimination reactivity between linear and trigonal planar tert-butyl complexes and the mechanism of H 2 activation at a hydroxide complex, indicate that coordination geometry at Cu(I) and properties of the naphthyridine- bis (carbene) ligand are integral to the transformations reported here.

Circumventing Radical Generation on Fe–V Atomic Pair Catalyst for Robust Oxygen Reduction and Zinc–Air Batteries

Iron–nitrogen–carbon (Fe–N–C) catalysts are considered the most active platinum-free alternative for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), yet the generated reactive oxygen species (ROS) from general mechanistic pathway rapidly impair the ORR activity and stability of Fe–N–C. Herein, we establish and report an ORR pathway-switching strategy to circumvent ROS generation and fundamentally improve the activity and stability of Fe–N–C via DFT guided catalyst design. The constructed Fe–V atomic pair catalyst (Fe 1 V 1 -NC) with N 2 Fe-N 2 -VN 2 configuration enables side-on adsorption of O 2 and subsequent direct-breaking of the O═O bond to form O*, thereby avoiding the formation of ROS radicals. Importantly, there is intersite electron interaction between FeN 4 and VN 4 , which further boosts the ORR activity. Consequently, Fe 1 V 1 -NC exhibits outstanding ORR activity with onset and half-wave (E 1/2 ) potentials at 1.02 and 0.89 V versus RHE, respectively, in 0.1 M KOH. Record-high stability is achieved on Fe 1 V 1 -NC with a minimal decay in E 1/2 by 16 mV over 50000 cycles, surpassing Fe–N–C counterpart and most of the catalysts reported to date. The Fe 1 V 1 -NC-based zinc-air battery reported here demonstrates exceptional durability up to 400 h at 10 mA·cm −2 . This work identifies the intrinsic correlation between ORR pathway, activity, and stability, advancing development of stable catalytic systems.
