Architecture for Web-Based Visualization of Large-Scale Energy Domains: Preprint

With the growing penetration of inverter-based distributed energy resources and increased loads through electrification, power systems analyses are becoming more important and more complex. Moreover, these analyses increasingly involve the combination of interconnected energy domains with data that are spatially and temporally increasing in scale by orders of magnitude, surpassing the capabilities of many existing analysis and decision-support systems. We present the architectural design, development, and application of a high-resolution web-based visualization environment capable of cross-domain analysis of tens of millions of energy assets, focusing on scalability and performance. Our system supports the exploration, navigation, and analysis of large data from diverse domains such as electrical transmission and distribution systems, mobility and electric vehicle charging networks, communications networks, cyber assets, and other supporting infrastructure. We evaluate this system across multiple use cases, describing the capabilities and limitations of a web-based approach for high-resolution energy system visualizations.

Physics-informed Data-driven Degradation and Prognostic For Hydropower System

The hydropower system is a cyber-physical system, and the industry is experiencing high operation and maintenance (O&M) costs along with increasing unplanned outages, primarily due to aging equipment and new asset loading patterns. Current (O&M) practices in asset management are predominantly reactive rather than predictive and systematic. To address these challenges, a proposed physics-informed data-driven degradation model aims to simulate the health of components in various environments. Its purpose is to accurately characterize wear and fatigue in the pilot components of hydropower systems. Additionally, the model provides informed confidence in prognostic predictions concerning asset degradation and remaining life.

SCA Tools - SCRM Value Add or Lossy Noise Machines

Software supply chain risk management (SCRM) depends upon accurate information regarding the software components that comprise any given software system. The collection of components included in a software package can be organized within a software bill of materials, or SBOM. SBOMs are ideally generated when the software components are put together, such as at compile time, but for many reasons that has not and is not always possible. For example, legacy or proprietary software packages often do not have SBOMs available to downstream consumers of that software. It’s not just end users that are affected, manufacturers themselves also must deal with this problem. To answer these questions, the market has seen the rise of several commercial software composition analysis (SCA) tools. These tools aim to peer into completed software systems, automatically identifying hidden software dependencies and looking up known vulnerabilities associated with those dependencies to enable end-users to enhance their cyber supply chain risk management processes. These tools are potentially a huge boon to end users of legacy and proprietary software – and a potential bane, depending on how accurate they are. This research asks that question – how accurate are currently available binary SCA tools – and provides answers to several other questions: What does it mean to be “accurate”? What limitations do the tools have in identifying common edge cases that take place in modern software development? Can they help you avoid a devastating supply chain attack, or is it all just noise? After researching SCA tools on the market, we identified three vendors that fit our use case and would provide analysis on compiled binaries. Using these tools, we submitted firmware for critical infrastructure devices for analysis and SBOM generation. The SBOM outputs were then cross referenced with SBOMs generated through manual analysis for comparison. In addition to the firmware samples, we also submitted edge case samples based off a popular open-source library that were specifically crafted to evaluate each tools’ ability to accurately identify components. These samples were customized to be consistent with modifications we have seen in modern software development as well as a couple that are representative of supply chain attacks.

Software defined networking moving target defense honeypot

Disclosed herein are systems, methods, and storage media for thwarting cyber-attacks and data theft. A computing system receives packets and compares with a configuration resource. The computing system determines that the packet does not match the configuration resource and transmits a packet to a decoy environment via an SDN switch. The decoy environment is configured to generate time-out, service unavailable, or restricted access messages. In some embodiments, the computing system determines the packet does match the configuration and transmits the packet to a production network via an SDN switch. The SDN switch is communicatively connected to the decoy environment through a first channel and communicatively connected to a production environment through a separate second channel. The computing system is further configured to create and transmit to the SDN switch, rules to manage transmitting the packet to either the decoy environment or the production environment.

Systems and methods for randomized energy draw or supply requests

The present disclosure can provide a distributed and anonymous approach to demand response of an electricity system. The approach can conceptualize energy consumption and production of distributed-energy resources (DERs) via discrete energy packets that are coordinated by a cyber computing entity that grants or denies energy packet requests from the DERs. The approach leverages a condition of a DER, which is particularly useful for (1) thermostatically-controlled loads, (2) non-thermostatic conditionally-controlled loads, and (3) bi-directional distributed energy storage systems, among others. In a first aspect of the present approach, each DER independently requests the authority to switch on for a fixed amount of time (i.e., packet duration). The coordinator determines whether to grant or deny each request based electric grid and/or energy or power market conditions. In a second aspect, bi-directional DERs, such as distributed-energy storage systems (DESSs) are further able to request to supply energy to the grid.

A Research Testbed for Experimental Connectivity and Automation in Cars

Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are engineered systems in which the computational components and physical components of the system are interdependent and deeply linked. Discovery and development of CPS technologies are changing the way people interact with engineered systems. To demonstrate this point, consider the Global Positioning System (GPS) which revolutionized personal mobility. Its research origins stem from the US Department of Defense in 1973 for military use. By 2000 limitations on civilian consumption of GPS service were lifted. Immediately, personal GPS products were shipped for in-car navigation systems. Soon after, GPS receivers were embedded into mobile phones with the introduction of the Nokia N95 and Apple iPhone for maps and turn-by-turn navigation. With the benefit of hindsight we can see that GPS has become a cornerstone technology of our daily life. Satellite-based navigation has gone from a radical space technology, to a matter of uninteresting availability; it is the typical way that people navigate through roadways now. The combination of the satellite infrastructure, the integration of receiver modules, and powerful maps applications has significantly changed mobility in the 21st century.

Cybersecurity for Distributed Energy Resources: All Hazards Approach for Grid Modernization

Distributed energy resources (DER) sit at the intersection of IoT and critical infrastructure. As we work towards clean energy and decarbonization targets, high rates of growth of DER are expected, making them an important component of generation and grid services. They have been a part of the explosion of internet connected devices developed to solve real-world problems and make life easier by providing clean, local energy and enable the smart management of grid services. However, the quick-to-market, low-cost drivers for DER, combined with a historically relative low-impact has meant that cybersecurity has not been a top priority. So as DER penetration increases, will DER be a part of the growing challenge of securing the grid, or part of the solution for necessary grid modernization? In this talk, we will discuss the factors that have led to our current position and what makes cybersecurity for DER unique. A wide range of research is conducted at national labs, in partnership with industry and academia, to inform everything from standards and regulation, to the development of cyber-physical anomaly detection through use of digital twins, and even advanced threat analytics to SBOM and HBOM tracking. Even with this multi-faceted approach to the challenges, the question remains: is this too little too late or are we doing enough to secure the grid for the next 30 years?

Field Programmable Gate Array Data Capture for Control Systems

Some Industrial Control Systems (ICS) networks are based on protocols such as Serial and Industrial Ethernet. These protocols currently have no existing cybersecurity monitoring tools, leaving a large gap in the cyber defense of critical infrastructure. In order to analyze such ICS traffic, it is first necessary to implement methods of capturing the ICS data. Whereas traditional methods of analyzing data would use microprocessors, the nature of high-speed analog data can be difficult to implement on such a versatile processor, as they are rather inefficient for doing a single task. Whereas Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) provide an adequate tool in analyzing high speed data, as despite the lack of program versatility, Programmable Logic can implement a solution with minimal clock cycles, allowing time for each new packet of data to be captured before a new data sample is taken.

Emerging Threats in Transportation Security Related to Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)

Transport of high-consequence shipments requires a resilient and robust systems of systems to guarantee cargo arrival. Furthermore, rising adoption of technologies such as connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), intelligent infrastructure, and vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication presents unique challenges for securing transportation systems. Within these Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), several additional vulnerabilities exist that create pathways for adversarial attacks and cargo interception. For example, connectivity provides cyber pathways directly into vehicle systems and infrastructure for malicious actors. Furthermore, advanced vehicle automation exposes additional vehicle control necessary for shipment interception otherwise unavailable to adversaries. Within this paper, we will discuss the specific threats introduced by ITS-enabled technologies currently deployed and in development. These include those mentioned related to connectivity and automation, but will be expanded into grid, infrastructure, and vehicle specific threats. In addition, we will discuss how to potentially mitigate these emerging challenges as well as how to safeguard transportation systems from next generation attacks.

A Typing Discipline for High-Assurance Control Systems

This poster describes a typing discipline for high-assurance industrial systems based on three novel type systems. The first type system, information flow control (IFC), controls the flow of data through the system. The second system, dependent session types, restricts messages exchanged during the execution of a communication protocol to avoid dangerous states. The third system uses dimensional analysis to avoid subtle bugs that adversaries can exploit to cause the system to enter a dangerous state. This poster describes how a combination of these approaches can prevent sophisticated cyber attacks, such as the infamous Stuxnet incident, from occurring. In addition, we provide experimental evidence to support the claim that these approaches can be applied in control systems that are resource-constrained.

AUTOMATIC GENERATION OF EVENT TREES AND FAULT TREES: A MODEL-BASED APPROACH

In the past few decades, increasing complexity in modern engineering systems has been driven by the integration of a large number of components and by the fact that the system operations involve many disciplines (e.g., thermal-hydraulics, plant operations, cyber-security). Current safety/reliability modeling approaches to such systems are labor intensive, difficult to learn, and rely heavily on simplistic Boolean logic to depict failure propagation and accident progression. While these methods serve well for simple systems (i.e., linear causal systems with limited small inter- and intra-system interactions), their results are difficult to verify when modeling complex systems (typically performed through the extensive use of modeling assumptions). The development of new methods is addressed to meet these challenges through a model-based system engineering (MBSE) lens. Under MBSE philosophy, every aspect of the system (form or function) is represented by a model that completely characterizes its architecture or behavior. MBSE approach greatly improves the management of design, analysis and verification of complex systems. An integration of Dynamic Probabilistic Risk Assessment (DPRA) methods with MBSE models is proposed to perform safety/reliability analyses of engineering systems. In particular, MBSE representation of the system (performed using Systems Modeling Language [SysML]) is coupled with DPRA methods to automatically generate event trees and fault trees.
