Environmental effects of an aircraft at cruise: An update

The status of the calculations of ozone change due to high altitude aircraft is critically reviewed and important areas of uncertainty identified. Laboratory determinations of chemical reaction rates and modeling refinements show that the effect of cruise altitude emissions on stratospheric ozone has changed from one of ozone decrease to one of slight increase. It is concluded that the uncertainties in the present understanding of the effects of high altitude aircraft are such as to warrant continued studies.

SEASAT-SAR data analysis in the US: An update

A graph is shown which compares SEASAT synthetic aperture radar (SAR) wave length measurements and Krasman's shallow water dispersion relationship for a swell system of deep water length 210 m and period 11.7 sec. The data were taken during the Duck experiment. The status of the production of optically correlated SAR data is given along with a tabulation of both digitally and optically processed SAR image data available to the user community as of Aug. 1979. Results from several SAR workshops are mentioned.

NASTRAN level 16 user's manual updates for aeroelastic analysis of bladed discs

The NASTRAN aeroelastic and flutter capability was extended to solve a class of problems associated with axial flow turbomachines. The capabilities of the program are briefly discussed. The aerodynamic data pertaining to the bladed disc sector, the associated aerodynamic modeling, the steady aerothermoelastic 'design/analysis' formulations, and the modal, flutter, and subcritical roots analyses are described. Sample problems and their solutions are included.

An update of nonstandard payload modulation restrictions

An upgrade to restrictions as a result of a change of philosophy toward PI receiver false lock avoidance is discussed. This changed philosophy concerns sweeping the receiver VCO sufficiently fast that sideband lock is precluded, rather than relying on the lock detector to discriminate between true lock and false lock signal conditions.

Preliminary interface revision notice SD-152C update of section 8.3 of ICD 2-19001 for detached payloads

The payload interrogator provides full duplex communication between the orbiter and detached payloads. This capability includes transmission of commands to and the reception of telemetry data from such payloads. Both NASA (STDN and DSN) and DOD (SGLS) transmit/receive frequency pairs are available. In addition to two way RF communication, Ku band rendezvous radar is also available. The radar skin-tracks targets in the passive mode or actively tracks transponder equipped payloads. Characteristics referring to those orbiter avionics characteristics of which the payloads must be cognizant and requirements referring to specifications placed upon payload communication equipment are discussed.

Comparison of different plate treatments and designs, an update

Nine packs of cells of different designs were put on test at Crane. They were run through their initial evaluation tests and then put into a cycling test. These were GE 12A h cells. The temperature was 20 C, the orbit was 90 minutes, the depth of discharge was 40%, the discharge rate was 9.6A and the initial charge rate was 9.6A to a voltage limit where it went into a taper. The goal was to get 100% return. The voltage limit was 1.453V through most of the testing, although recently it became necessary to lower some packs and raise some to hold 115% return. After one year, one cell from each pack was removed and the initial evaluation tests were repeated.

A U.S. Navy Precise Time and Time Interval (PTTI) program update

The review presents a brief history of the program, its management organization, and current and projected requirements, capabilities and program efforts. The overall program growth since September 1975 is presented. The Navy's areas of concern regarding future PTTI development are described.

Numerical techniques in linear duct acoustics, 1980-81 update

A review is presented covering finite element and finite difference analysis of small amplitude (linear) sound propagation in straight and variable area ducts. This review stresses the new work performed during the 1980-1981 time frame, although a brief discussion of earlier work is also included. Emphasis is placed on the latest state of the art in numerical techniques.

Space applicable DOE photovoltaic technology: An update

Photovoltaic development projects applicable to space power are identified. When appropriate, the type of NASA support that would be necessary to implement these technologies for space use is indicated. It is conducted that the relatively small market and divergent operational requirements for space power are mainly responsible for the limited transfer of terrestrial technology to space applications. Information on the factors which control the cost and type of technology is provided. Terrestrial modules using semiconductor materials are investigated.

Military standards and SCATHA program update of MIL-STD-1541

The elctromagnetic compatability requirements for space systems, 15 October 1973, to be met by industry contractors for spacecraft launch vehicles and other special space systems, are considered. Deficiencies in the existing standard with respect to spacecraft charge and discharge phenomena, the technical ramifications for generating a new standard, and the upgrading of MIL-STD-1541 with requirements supplied as a result of the SCATHA program are discussed.

SPAR reference manual update SPAR level 15

Command runstream elements are presented for analyzing structural systems that are composed of a number of cyclically symmetrical sectors. Provisions are included for systems in which each cyclically symmetrical sector also possesses a plane of reflective symmetry. The following types of analysis may be performed: static analysis with and without preload, vibrational analysis with and without preload, and buckling analysis with and without preload.

RCA SATCOM in-orbit experience: An update

The SATCOM in-orbit battery performance was evaluated. The capacitance and constant current charge rates for each of the three batteries were monitored. A typical eclipse discharge profile was generated and attendant reconditioning recharge conditions were considered. Battery temperatures, pressures, and average battery voltages are presented in tabular form. In-orbit data from monitoring the end of discharge voltage during eclipses, a key performance parameter, are also given.

Update: Viking Lander NiCd batteries. Year six

The performance of NiCd batteries on the Viking Mars landers is discussed. During evaluation, three of the four batteries were maintained in the discharged state. Battery charge regimes and close-together, deep-discharge, reconditioning cycles to retard degradation of batteries are discussed. The effect of elevated temperatures during Martian summer on battery performance were also considered. Tabulated data for average battery capacity as a function of time are given. A design uplink to allow more frequent, greater depth of discharge reconditioning cycles was proposed.

Comparisons of different plate treatment and designs: An update

Nine groups of cells were studied. The first group was the control. The basic design was cadmium in the positive plate, and no negative treatment. The plate loading level was the IUE. The separator was pellon. The test regime for the remaining cells was a 90 minute cycle with 40% depth of discharge and a temperature of 20 C. The charge rate was 9.6 amps to a voltage limit. The discharge rate was 9.6 amps.
