Orbit Determination (OD) Error Analysis Results for the Triana Sun-Earth L1 Libration Point Mission and for the Fourier Kelvin Stellar Interferometer (FKSI) Sun-Earth L2 Libration Point Mission Concept

The Triana spacecraft was designed to be launched by the Space Shuttle. The nominal Triana mission orbit will be a Sun-Earth L1 libration point orbit. Using the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's Orbit Determination Error Analysis System (ODEAS), orbit determination (OD) error analysis results are presented for all phases of the Triana mission from the first correction maneuver through approximately launch plus 6 months. Results are also presented for the science data collection phase of the Fourier Kelvin Stellar Interferometer Sun-Earth L2 libration point mission concept with momentum unloading thrust perturbations during the tracking arc. The Triana analysis includes extensive analysis of an initial short arc orbit determination solution and results using both Deep Space Network (DSN) and commercial Universal Space Network (USN) statistics. These results could be utilized in support of future Sun-Earth libration point missions.

Vision Based Autonomous Robotic Control for Advanced Inspection and Repair

The advanced inspection system is an autonomous control and analysis system that improves the inspection and remediation operations for ground and surface systems. It uses optical imaging technology with intelligent computer vision algorithms to analyze physical features of the real-world environment to make decisions and learn from experience. The advanced inspection system plans to control a robotic manipulator arm, an unmanned ground vehicle and cameras remotely, automatically and autonomously. There are many computer vision, image processing and machine learning techniques available as open source for using vision as a sensory feedback in decision-making and autonomous robotic movement. My responsibilities for the advanced inspection system are to create a software architecture that integrates and provides a framework for all the different subsystem components; identify open-source algorithms and techniques; and integrate robot hardware.

Mission Enabling and Enhancing Spacecraft Capabilities with MicroNewton Electric Propulsion

The capability to significantly improve current spacecraft pointing, precision orbit maintenance and disturbance mitigation were considered using precision, quiescent microNewton electric propulsion systems. Analysis results showed that electric propulsion systems operating in the microNewton to hundreds of microNewtons thrust range can offer significant improvements over state-of-the-art mission capabilities to enable 30 m Earth-fixed orbital tubes, constellation spacecraft position control to within nanometers and exoplanet observatory pointing with 0.1 milliarcsecond precision. Specific thrust levels and profiles required to support these capabilities are discussed.

The Advantages of Synergy-Quantitative Earth Science Data Visualization and Analysis with Giovanni, Panoply, and Excel

The NASA Giovanni data analysis system provides a multitude of basic analysis capabilities for numerous Earth science data products which are available in the NASA Goddard Earth Sciences Data and Information Services Center (GES DISC) archive, as well as for additional selected data products provided by other NASA Distributed Active Archive Center (DAAC) archives. In Giovanni, users can easily generate time-averaged data maps, area-averaged time-series, Latitude-Time and Longitude-Time Hovmoeller diagrams, correlation maps, accumulation maps, and map animations (22 analysis options are available in total). While ASCII text output is available for time-series plots, it is not included as an option for data maps. In order to provide a quantitative, easy-to-use numerical output in ASCII text form, the NetCDF file output from a Giovanni visualization is downloaded and then opened with the free NASA visualization software package Panoply. Panoply provides the capability of translating the Giovanni file into comma-separated-variable (CSV) output. Panoply also provides additional visualization options, including the facile calculation of difference maps and quasi-anomaly maps using Giovanni output files. The CSV files from Panoply can then be imported into an Excel spreadsheet, where an Excel macro converts the CSV files. The output consists of latitude-longitude-data value triads in text form for maps, and either longitude-time-data value or latitude-time-data value triads in text form for Hovmoeller diagrams. This presentation will explicate the basic procedure for the conversion, and then provide several examples where the procedure is applied to Giovanni output from different analysis options.

Lunar transportation system

The University Space Research Association (USRA) requested the University of Minnesota Spacecraft Design Team to design a lunar transportation infrastructure. This task was a year long design effort culminating in a complete conceptual design and presentation at Johnson Space Center. The mission objective of the design group was to design a system of vehicles to bring a habitation module, cargo, and crew to the lunar surface from LEO and return either or both crew and cargo safely to LEO while emphasizing component commonality, reusability, and cost effectiveness. During the course of the design, the lunar transportation system (LTS) has taken on many forms. The final design of the system is composed of two vehicles, a lunar transfer vehicle (LTV) and a lunar excursion vehicle (LEV). The LTV serves as an efficient orbital transfer vehicle between the earth and the moon while the LEV carries crew and cargo to the lunar surface. Presented in the report are the mission analysis, systems layout, orbital mechanics, propulsion systems, structural and thermal analysis, and crew systems, avionics, and power systems for this lunar transportation concept.

Progress Toward Future Runway Management

The runway is universally acknowledged as a constraining factor to capacity in the National Airspace System (NAS). It follows that investigation of the effective use of runways, both in terms of selection and assignment, is paramount to the efficiency of future NAS operations. The need to address runway management is not a new idea; however, as the complexities of factors affecting runway selection and usage increase, the need for effective research in this area correspondingly increases. Under the National Aeronautics and Space Administration s Airspace Systems Program, runway management is a key research area. To address a future NAS which promises to be a complex landscape of factors and competing interests among users and operators, effective runway management strategies and capabilities are required. This effort has evolved from an assessment of current practices, an understanding of research activities addressing surface and airspace operations, traffic flow management enhancements, among others. This work has yielded significant progress. Systems analysis work indicates that the value of System Oriented Runway Management tools is significantly increased in the metroplex environment over that of the single airport case. Algorithms have been developed to provide runway configuration recommendations for a single airport with multiple runways. A benefits analysis has been conducted that indicates the SORM benefits include supporting traffic growth, cost reduction as a result of system efficiency, NAS optimization from metroplex operations, fairness in aircraft operations, and rational decision making.

Investigations on transparent liquid-miscibility gap systems

Sedimentation and phase separation is a well known occurrence in monotectic or miscibility gap alloys. Previous investigations indicate that it may be possible to prepare such alloys in a low-gravity space environment but recent experiments indicate that there may be nongravity dependent phase separation processes which can hinder the formation of such alloys. Such phase separation processes are studied using transparent liquid systems and holography. By reconstructing holograms into a commercial-particle-analysis system, real time computer analysis can be performed on emulsions with diameters in the range of 5 micrometers or greater. Thus dynamic effects associated with particle migration and coalescence can be studied. Characterization studies on two selected immiscible systems including an accurate determination of phase diagrams, surface and interfacial tension measurements, surface excess and wetting behavior near critical solution temperatures completed.

Battery Resistance Analysis of ISS Power System

The computer package, SPACE (Systems Power Analysis for Capability Evaluation) was created by the members of LT-9D to perform power analysis and modeling of the electrical power system on the International Space Station (ISS). Written in FORTRAN, SPACE comprises thousands of lines of code and has been used profficiently in analyzing missions to the ISS. LT-9D has also used its expertise recently to investigate the batteries onboard the Hubble telescope. During the summer of 2004, I worked with the members of LT-9D, under the care of Dave McKissock. Solar energy will power the ISS through eight solar arrays when the ISS is completed, although only two arrays are currently connected. During the majority of the periods of sunlight, the solar arrays provide enough energy for the ISS. However, rechargeable Nickel-Hydrogen batteries are used during eclipse periods or at other times when the solar arrays cannot be used (at docking for example, when the arrays are turned so that they will not be damaged by the Shuttle). Thirty-eight battery cells are connected in series, which make up an ORU (Orbital Replacement Unit). An ISS "battery" is composed of two ORUs. a great deal of time into finding the best way to represent them in SPACE. During my internship, I investigated the resistance of the ISS batteries. SPACE constructs plots of battery charge and discharge voltages vs. time using a constant current. To accommodate for a time-varying current, the voltages are adjusted using the formula, DeltaV = DeltaI * Cell Resistance. To enhance our model of the battery resistance, my research concentrated on several topics: investigating the resistance of a qualification unit battery (using data gathered by LORAL), comparing the resistance of the qualification unit to SPACE, looking at the internal resistance and wiring resistance, and examining the impact of possible recommended changes to SPACE. The ISS batteries have been found to be very difficult to model, and LT-9D has dedicated

Aerocapture Performance Analysis for a Neptune-Triton Exploration Mission

A systems analysis has been conducted for a Neptune-Triton Exploration Mission in which aerocapture is used to capture a spacecraft at Neptune. Aerocapture uses aerodynamic drag instead of propulsion to decelerate from the interplanetary approach trajectory to a captured orbit during a single pass through the atmosphere. After capture, propulsion is used to move the spacecraft from the initial captured orbit to the desired science orbit. A preliminary assessment identified that a spacecraft with a lift to drag ratio of 0.8 was required for aerocapture. Performance analyses of the 0.8 L/D vehicle were performed using a high fidelity flight simulation within a Monte Carlo executive to determine mission success statistics. The simulation was the Program to Optimize Simulated Trajectories (POST) modified to include Neptune specific atmospheric and planet models, spacecraft aerodynamic characteristics, and interplanetary trajectory models. To these were added autonomous guidance and pseudo flight controller models. The Monte Carlo analyses incorporated approach trajectory delivery errors, aerodynamic characteristics uncertainties, and atmospheric density variations. Monte Carlo analyses were performed for a reference set of uncertainties and sets of uncertainties modified to produce increased and reduced atmospheric variability. For the reference uncertainties, the 0.8 L/D flatbottom ellipsled vehicle achieves 100% successful capture and has a 99.87 probability of attaining the science orbit with a 360 m/s V budget for apoapsis and periapsis adjustment. Monte Carlo analyses were also performed for a guidance system that modulates both bank angle and angle of attack with the reference set of uncertainties. An alpha and bank modulation guidance system reduces the 99.87 percentile DELTA V 173 m/s (48%) to 187 m/s for the reference set of uncertainties.

Pros and Cons Analysis of HALEU Utilization in Example Fuel Cycles

The Systems Analysis and Integration campaign assessed the pros and cons of high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU) utilization in advanced reactors and associated fuel cycles. The assessment was done for three example fuel cycles at equilibrium states: once-through, limited recycle, and continuous recycle (CR) starting with HALEU. Front- and back-end fuel cycle parameters and the Levelized Cost of Fuel (LCF), which is the Levelized Cost of Electricity excluding reactor cost, of the three example fuel cycles were calculated using a single Analysis Example Reactor. The pros and cons of HALEU utilization were assessed by normalizing the fuel cycle parameters and LCF to a unit of electricity generation (GWe-year) and comparing them with a Basis of Comparison. In this study, a sodium-cooled reactor with sodium-bonded metallic fuel having a burnup of ~100 GWd/t was used as the Analysis Example Reactor because its technology readiness level is high, and the burnup and fuel enrichment are in the middle of those ranges of advanced reactor concepts that are under development. The current once-through Light Water Reactors (OT-LWRs) with <5% low-enriched uranium and 50 GWd/t burnup were used as the Basis of Comparison. In addition, a series of sensitivity analyses was conducted by varying burnup, enrichment, fuel forms, and reactor types to capture the design variations in two once-through Advanced Reactor Demonstration Program (ARDP) reactors, Natrium with sodium-free metallic fuel having a burnup of ~150 GW/t and Xe-100 with Tristructural-Isotropic (TRISO) pebble fuel having a burnup of ~168 GWd/t.
