Utilizing Coal as a Source for REE/CMs

The Department of Energy’s program to produce Rare Earth Elements (REE) and Critical Minerals (CM) from coal and related materials was created to alleviate concerns over U.S. dependence on foreign supplies and to provide domestic industry a secure supply of the materials they need to participate in evolving markets. The lack of a mature domestic REE supply chains, however, present a major obstacle to achieving this goal. Engineers in the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL)’s Research and Innovation Center (RIC) have conducted numerous market and techno-economic analyses on domestic REE needs and pathways, as well as extensive interviews with industry leaders, all with the goal of investigating the opportunities for coal-derived REE and CM products. This talk will highlight some of the major challenges and key takeaways from this work (Presented at the ACS 26th Annual Green Chemistry & Engineering Conference).

A Fast and Scalable Genetic Algorithm-Based Approach for Planning of Microgrids in Distribution Networks: Preprint

As a result of climate change, extreme weather events are occurring more frequently and with increasing impact. This trend poses a significant challenge for distribution utilities and system operators to ensure that there is uninterrupted power supply to critical loads in their networks; thus, the level of proactive preparation of the distribution system to be able to handle severe impacts of extreme weather events represents the system's resilience. One method that distribution systems use to prepare for extreme events is to form multiple microgrids and thereby isolate themselves from the grid supply by using local generation as much as possible to supply critical loads. But partitioning an existing system into multiple feasible islands capable of supporting critical loads is still challenging for distribution systems - first, because of the size of the graph partitioning problem and, second, because of the difficulty in properly formulating the desired attributes of such islands or microgrids. Therefore, this paper presents a genetic algorithmbased approach that facilitates incorporating multiple objectives for grid partitioning by formulating two types of problems - node allocation and edge elimination - and it considers multiple topological and resilience-enhancing objectives. The performance of the proposed genetic algorithm-based approach is numerically evaluated on multiple test systems as well as on a real distribution feeder in Colorado, USA.

The Circular Economy Lifecycle Assessment and Visualization Framework - CELAVI

A circular economy (CE) aims to decouple human activities from economic growth and resource use, and its overall goal is reducing or avoiding negative environmental externalities. The newly developed Circular Economy Lifecycle Assessment and Visualization (CELAVI) framework simulates changes in supply chain environmental impacts as it transitions toward circularity. This study expands CELAVI by incorporating detailed spatial resolution and real-world road routes connecting all facilities within the system. The case study on end-of-life decision making of wind turbine blades in the states of Iowa and Missouri explores how supply chain circularity and environmental impacts are affected by pathway costs and level of wind turbine installations. It demonstrates how high circularity costs might be beneficial for circularity transitions given revenue generated from circular pathways. Finally, impacts have important contributions to the supply chain design and thus show the importance of including detailed spatial resolution in CELAVI and CE studies in general.

Optimization and Experimental Validation of Annular Finned PCM-HX for a Domestic Hot Water Heater Application

The load profile for domestic water heating is time-dependent and can result in high energy demand during peak operating times. Shifting this peak load can have significant environmental and economic impacts. Phase change material (PCM)-based thermal energy storage (TES) is a potentially useful technology for peak load shifting in domestic hot water (DHW) applications thanks to its high latent heat and energy density. In this study, an annular finned-tube PCM-HX design concept was optimized for a load-shifting TES unit to meet the Department of Energy standard for a medium-usage DHW heater using a resistance-capacitance model (RCM) integrated with a Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithm. The optimized design comprised 70 identical annular finned-tube PCM-HX units connected in parallel and utilizing RT62HC as the PCM. A single PCM-HX unit was prototyped and tested in a vertically oriented setup with upward heat transfer fluid (HTF) flow. The hot water supply time was defined based on a cutoff temperature of 51.7°C. The as-designed mass flow rate (1.5 g/s) was tested to assess the performance of the prototyped PCM-HX unit for RCM validation. For the experimental investigation, RTD sensor bundles measured HTF temperature at the PCM-HX inlet and outlet, and a Coriolis flow meter accurately measured the HTF mass flow rate. The simulated discharging power underpredicted the experimental result by about 12%, and the simulated hot water supply time underpredicted the experimental result by approximately 13% for the as-designed mass flow rate (1.5 g/s). The average deviation of the hot water supply temperature between the experimental and RCM results during the complete PCM solidification process was 1.3 K for the as-designed mass flow rate. The overall good agreement between the experimental and RCM results provides confidence that computationally efficient models such as RCM can be utilized for design optimization of PCM-HXs.

Power Analysis of an ePump Applied to the Linear Functions of an Agricultural Planter

Like many other industries, the agricultural industry has recently ex-perienced pressure to reduce vehicle emissions while improving productivity. Electric actuation is perceived as a viable solution to replace or augment hydrau-lic and mechanical actuation. However, electrification presents challenges with regards to linear functions, where hydraulic actuators have advantages in terms of compactness, tolerance to contamination and resistance to shocks. A combined electro-hydraulic actuation architecture can leverage the benefits of both electric and hydraulic actuation, while reducing the drawbacks of both approaches. This work investigates the potential of a centralized electric driven pump (ePump) system powering the pressure-controlled linear functions of an agricul-tural planter, with the goal of improving the operating point of the main supply pump. In this application, the rotary functions are hydraulically actuated, alt-hough such a solution could be applied also to electric rotary actuation. This is accomplished by setting the ePump to boost the pressure supplied by the tractor to the level required by the linear functions. An accumulator is used to stabilize the flow requirements of the linear functions, and control the pressure supplied to the actuators. Two control schemes are proposed for the regulation of the ac-cumulator pressure, one favoring an efficient operating point for the ePump, the other favoring stable steady state operation. A simulation model of the baseline system and proposed system is developed and validated using experimental data from a full-scale machine. Using the vali-dated simulation, both control architectures are then evaluated for improvement in system power consumption and dynamic requirements on the ePump to assess their effectiveness. Both systems demonstrate significant improvement in power consumption over the baseline system, with the best solution improving effi-ciency by 64%.

Plasma assisted spark ignition systems and methods

A plasma assisted spark ignition system includes an ignitor and a power supply. The first ignitor includes: a casing having a first end, a second end that forms a first electrode, and a longitudinally extending passage, a second electrode which protrudes longitudinally outward from an opening at the second end of the casing and laterally spaced inwardly to form a spark gap, and an electrical insulator (dielectric) surrounding a portion of the second electrode, and which has a terminus that is at least closely spaced to an interior surface of the end of the casing. The power supply supplies a plurality of voltage pulses to the ignitor per ignition event to generate a flash over on the dielectric. Subsequent pulses in an ignition event may be at lower amplitude than an initial pulse in the ignition event. Pulses may, for example, have a duration on the order of a nanosecond.

Field demonstration of a tracer method to track simulated exhaled air trajectories and mixing in three connected rooms with upper-room GUV

We conducted tracer gas experiments in three connected nursery rooms to track simulated exhaled air trajectories and mixing. We emulated exhaled air with a pulse release of ethanol and measured its concentration with 2s time resolution with spatially distributed metal oxide sensors in both the upper and occupied levels of the room. We found that the overhead cooling supply air enhanced vertical air mixing within the rooms. When a room had higher supply airflow than the others, the tracer gas mixed quickly in that room because the supply air dominated the room mixing, thereby isolating it from air mixing with the other rooms. When the forced air system was not operating, the tracer gas resided longer in the upper room before descending. The tracer method also depicts air trajectories from different release locations by detecting the release point and affecting nearby sensors. These experiments support the potential of this method to be used in the field for understanding air trajectories in rooms with upper-room GUV.
