The response of monoenergetic gamma rays in finite media are investigated

In a study of the transport of radiation in matter, the response parameters of monoenergetic gamma rays incident on various materials with finite geometries were calculated on a CDC 3600 computer. The report includes results for gamma rays normal to cyclindrical germanium and silicon detectors.

Gamma radiation characteristics of plutonium dioxide fuel

Investigation of plutonium dioxide as an isotopic fuel for Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators yielded the isotopic composition of production-grade plutonium dioxide fuel, sources of gamma radiation produced by plutonium isotopes, and the gamma flux at the surface.

A Compton scatter attenuation gamma ray spectrometer

Compton attenuation technique, utilizing semiconductor sum-Compton detectors, has been proposed for gamma ray spectrometer capable of gamma spectral measurements in radition fields of 100 R/hr to one million R/hr. Spectrometer consists of two or more separate detectors, with only primary detector exposed to primary incident photon flux.

Production of gamma rays in the crab nebula pulsar

The gamma-ray flux at energies above 50 MeV from NP0532 is evaluated for a pulsar model in which the optical and X-radiation is produced by synchrotron effect. Synchrotron radiation and inverse Compton scattering are considered as production mechanisms of the gamma-rays. The theoretical estimates are compared with the experimental values.

SNAP-8 post shutdown gamma radiation approximations

Detector responses were calculated for normalized sources in the Perkins and King energy group structure for a SNAP 8 power system on a NASA space station. Gamma decay rates were then calculated by using an expanded, updated list of isotopic decay data, and from these, actual detector responses were found for the SNAP 8 system. The results indicate that energy-dependent calculations must be made to determine decay gamma dose rates for actual reactor configurations. A simplified method for making these calculations has been devised.

The calculation of neutron capture gamma-ray yields for space shielding applications

The application of nuclear models to the calculation of neutron capture and inelastic scattering gamma yields is discussed. The gamma ray cascade model describes the cascade process in terms of parameters which either: (1) embody statistical assumptions regarding electric and magnetic multipole transition strengths, level densities, and spin and parity distributions or (2) are fixed by experiment such as measured energies, spin and parity values, and transition probabilities for low lying states.

Some gamma-ray shielding measurements made at altitudes greater than 115000 feet using large Ge(Li) detectors

A series of balloon-flight experiments at altitudes greater than 115,000 feet were conducted to gain information relative to the use of composite shields (passive and/or active) for shielding large-volume, lithium-drifted, germanium (Ge(Li)) detectors used in gamma-ray spectrometers. Data showing the pulse-height spectra of the environmental gamma radiation as measured at 5.3 and 3.8 gms sq cm residual atmosphere with an unshielded diode detector are also presented.

Code CUGEL: A code to unfold Ge(Li) spectrometer polyenergetic gamma photon experimental distributions

A FORTRAN code was developed for the Univac 1108 digital computer to unfold lithium-drifted germanium semiconductor spectrometers, polyenergetic gamma photon experimental distributions. It was designed to analyze the combination continuous and monoenergetic gamma radiation field of radioisotope volumetric sources. The code generates the detector system response matrix function and applies it to monoenergetic spectral components discretely and to the continuum iteratively. It corrects for system drift, source decay, background, and detection efficiency. Results are presented in digital form for differential and integrated photon number and energy distributions, and for exposure dose.

Gamma-ray spectrometer experiment

The experiments in gamma-ray spectrometry to determine the geochemical composition of the lunar surface are reported. The theory is discussed of discrete energy lines of natural radioactivity, and the lines resulting from the bombardment of the lunar surface by high energy cosmic rays. The gamma-ray spectrometer used in lunar orbit and during transearth coast is described, and a preliminary analysis of the results is presented.

A computer code for predicting gamma production cross sections by neutron inelastic scattering from light nuclei

Gamma-ray production cross section by the inelastic scattering of neutrons from light nuclei are considered. The applicability of optical model potential is discussed. Based on experimental data, a cascade approach is developed to calculate the inelastic gamma production cross sections. In the case of O-16 using computer code LINGAP in conjunction with ABACUS-2; results are compared with reported values.

Absolute ultraviolet spectrophotometry of Alpha Canis Majoris, Gamma Orionis, Kappa Orionis and Alpha Leonis

Spectral observations of the stars Alpha Canis Majoris, Gamma Orionis, Kappa Orionis and Alpha Leonis have been obtained in the range 1150-4000 A, using rocket borne spectrometers. The payloads have a 13-inch diameter telescope, a rotatable concave diffraction grating, and three pulse counting photomultiplier photometers. The observations are systematically lower than those of Carruthers (1968) at 1270 A, of Smith (1967) at 1376 A, and of Campbell (1970) at 2150 and 2550 A. The data are also about 15 percent lower than the ground-based photometry reported by Schild, Peterson and Oke (1971). The OAO-2 short wavelength scanner calibration agrees with the alpha Leo observations, but disagrees for Kappa Ori and Gamma Ori.

The announcement is presented of the launch of NASA's Small Astronomy Satellite B (SAS-B) on 2 Nov. 1972, to study gamma rays. The launch is to be from the Italian-operated San Marco Equatorial Range in the Indian Ocean for ease in acquiring an equatorial orbit. The spacecraft systems described include: stabilization and control, communication, and spark chamber gamma ray telescope. The results of Uhuru (Explorer 42) are also presented.

Heterogeneous nucleation of gamma prime in Al-Ag and Al-Ag /Cd or Cu/ alloys.

Results of transmission electron microscopy studies of heterogeneous nucleation of the metastable gamma prime phase were made in binary and ternary alloys of Al-5 at. % Ag, Al-4.8 at. % Ag-0.15 at. % Cd, and Al-4.8 at. % Ag-0.2 at. % Cu. Heterogeneous nucleation of gamma prime was found to be associated with four types of dislocations, regardless of the quenching treatment or alloy additions which were used. Nucleation was found to occur on: (a) jogged dislocations; (b) helical dislocations; (c) dislocation loops; (d) heterogeneous climb sources. Only one nucleation mechanism was found to be unique to the ternary alloys: that of nucleation on heterogeneous climb sources.
