An Investigation of the Aerodynamic Characteristics of an 0.08-Scale Model of the Chance Vought XF7U-1 Airplane in the Langley High-Speed 7- by 10-Foot Tunnel. Part II - Basic Lateral Stability Characteristics TED No. NACA DE308: Basic Lateral Stability Charactistics, TED No. NACA DE308 - Part 2

Tests have been conducted in the Langley high-speed 7- by 10-foot tunnel over a Mach number range from 0.40 to 0.91 to determine the stability and control characteristics of an 0.08-scale model of the Chance Vought XF7U-1 airplane. The basic lateral stability characteristics of the complete model with undeflected control surfaces are presented in the present report with a very limited analysis of the results.

An investigation of a movable mass-attitude stabilization system for artificial-G space

The application of a single movable mass to generate control torques for the attitude control of space vehicles is discussed. The feasibility of a movable mass control in stabilizing a cable-connected, artificial gravity configuration is proposed. A dynamic model for cable-connected configurations to account for the aggregate motion of the space station and relative torsional motion between the crew quarters and counter weight is developed.

Investigation at Low Speeds of Deflectors and Spoilers as Gust Alleviators on a Model of the Bell X-5 Airplane with 35 Degree Swept Wings and on a High-aspect-ratio 35 Degree Swept-wing-fuselage Model

Results of an investigation at low speeds to determine the gust-alleviation capabilities (reduction in lift-curve slope) of spoilers and deflectors on a 35 degree swept-wing model of high aspect ratio and on a 1/4-scale model of the X-5 airplane with 35 degree swept wings indicate that deflector and spoiler-deflector types of controls can be designed to provide considerable gust alleviation for a swept-wing airplane while still maintaining stability and control.

Smart Meters Enabling Voltage Monitoring and Control Functionalities: The Last-Mile Voltage Stability Issue

It is a demanding yet challenging task to design the next generation of smart meters. This work investigates the new voltage monitoring and control function for the next-generation smart meters, and identifies its added values for power system voltage stability issues. In terms of voltage monitoring, the risk benefit analysis for adding voltage magnitudes to smart meter measurements is presented, and the risk mitigation strategies along with the co-simulation validation via GridLAB-D and NS-3 are proposed, all providing insight into the new function evaluation. In terms of voltage control, a new voltage stability control scheme is developed, which uses voltage measurements from smart meters and utilizes the observability and controllability of distributed energy resources and controllable loads. Different from traditional voltage control schemes focusing on voltage regulation and power quality monitoring from the utility perspective, the proposed control scheme can achieve the maximum real power transfer margin at the end user side, enabling the voltage stability issues being solved at the grid edge, i.e. the last-mile segment. It is the first work that considers voltage monitoring and control collectively for smart meter investment. It can help power engineering community supplement smart meter applications and shape the next-generation smart meters.

Stability analysis of automobile driver steering control

In steering an automobile, the driver must basically control the direction of the car's trajectory (heading angle) and the lateral deviation of the car relative to a delineated pathway. A previously published linear control model of driver steering behavior which is analyzed from a stability point of view is considered. A simple approximate expression for a stability parameter, phase margin, is derived in terms of various driver and vehicle control parameters, and boundaries for stability are discussed. A field test study is reviewed that includes the measurement of driver steering control parameters. Phase margins derived for a range of vehicle characteristics are found to be generally consistent with known adaptive properties of the human operator. The implications of these results are discussed in terms of driver adaptive behavior.

Comparative Analysis of Inter-Area Oscillations in the US Eastern and Western Interconnections

This paper presents a comparative analysis of interarea oscillations in the US Eastern and Western Interconnections using frequency disturbance data collected from the advanced wide-area Frequency Monitoring Network (FNET/GridEye), enabling us to investigate and compare the oscillation characteristics of both regions. The study analyzes the statistical data from the two interconnections, including total oscillation events, average dominant frequencies, damping ratios, and maximum amplitudes. We also explore the impact of seasonal and daily variations on oscillation occurrences and the influence of different grid topologies and operational practices. The results provide insights into both interconnections' stability and control characteristics, offering valuable information for power system operators to enhance grid stability and oscillation suppression measures.

RCS jet-flow field interaction effects on the aerodynamics of the space shuttle orbiter

A study was conducted to determine the external effects caused by operation of the reaction control system during entry of the space shuttle orbiter. The effects of jet plume-external flow interactions were emphasized. Force data were obtained for the basic airframe characteristics plus induced effects when the reaction control system is operating. Resulting control amplification and/or coupling were derived and their effects on the aerodynamic stability and control of the orbiter and the reaction control system thrust were determined.

Algebraic methods for the solution of some linear matrix equations

The characterization of polynomials whose zeros lie in certain algebraic domains (and the unification of the ideas of Hermite and Lyapunov) is the basis for developing finite algorithms for the solution of linear matrix equations. Particular attention is given to equations PA + A'P = Q (the Lyapunov equation) and P - A'PA = Q the (discrete Lyapunov equation). The Lyapunov equation appears in several areas of control theory such as stability theory, optimal control (evaluation of quadratic integrals), stochastic control (evaluation of covariance matrices) and in the solution of the algebraic Riccati equation using Newton's method.

A 1.2 meter balloon-borne telescope for a submillimeter wave sky survey

A balloon-borne, 1.2 meter Cassegrain telescope designed for diffraction-limited imagery at 100 microns is being developed for a survey of the Galactic plane at submillimeter wavelengths. The telescope pointing system is servocontrolled using a gyroscope for the primary stabilization reference. Extensive use is made of microprocessors for flight sequencing, pointing control and stabilization, and telemetry formatting. A description of the telescope, helium-cooled detectors, and the orientation subsystems are presented together with a brief discussion of the proposed astronomical observations.

Lyapunov-based control designs for flexible-link manipulators

A feedback controller for the stabilization of closed-loop systems is proposed which is based on the Liapunov stability criterion. A feedback control law is first generated for the linear portion of the system equation using linear control theory. A feedback control is then designed for the nonlinear portion of the system equation by making negative the time derivative of a positive definite Liapunov function.

Trim drag reduction concepts for horizontal takeoff single-stage-to-Orbit vehicles

The results of a study to investigate concepts for minimizing trim drag of horizontal takeoff single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) vehicles are presented. A generic hypersonic airbreathing conical configuration was used as the subject aircraft. The investigation indicates that extreme forward migration of the aerodynamic center as the vehicle accelerates to orbital velocities causes severe aerodynamic instability and trim moments that must be counteracted. Adequate stability can be provided by active control of elevons and rudder, but use of elevons to produce trim moments results in excessive trim drag and fuel consumption. To alleviate this problem, two solution concepts are examined. Active control of the center of gravity (COG) location to track the aerodynamic center decreases trim moment requirements, reduces elevon deflections, and leads to significant fuel savings. Active control of the direction of the thrust vector produces required trim moments, reduces elevon deflections, and also results in significant fuel savings. It is concluded that the combination of active flight control to provide stabilization, (COG) position control to minimize trim moment requirements, and thrust vectoring to generate required trim moments has the potential to significantly reduce fuel consumption during ascent to orbit of horizontal takeoff SSTO vehicles.
