Method and apparatus for mapping the distribution of chemical elements in an extended medium

Contaminants in an extended medium such as the wall of a building are mapped by locating neutron excitation source on one side of the wall and a gamma ray spectrometer, including a gamma ray detector on the opposite side of the wall facing the excitation source. The source and detector are moved in unison in discrete steps over opposing wall surfaces so as to determine the chemical composition of the elements in a hemispheric region of the wall adjacent the detector with the radius of the region being substantially that of the mean free path distance of gamma rays emitted from elements interacting with neutrons on the detector side of the wall. The source and detector are reversed for relatively thick walls for mapping the distribution of elements on the other side of the wall thickness. The output of the detector is fed to a multichannel pulse height analyzer where the intensity of the various gamma ray spectral lines are indicated relative to a dominant constituent element such as silicon. Resolution of anomalies such as the presence of voids and/or determining the bulk density of the medium is achieved by substituting a gamma ray source technique is also applied to metal alloys, such as iron alloys, in either the solid or molten state.

The Strength and Characteristics of VPPA Welded 2219-T87 Aluminum Alloy

A study of the variable polarity plasma arc (VPPA) welding process and those factors that control the structure and properties of VPPA welded aluminum alloy 2219-T87 was conducted. The importance of joint preparation, alignment of parts and welding process variables are already established. Internal weld defects have been eliminated. However, a variation of properties was found to be due to the size variation of interdendritic particles in the fusion zone. These particles contribute to the void formation process, which controls the ultimate tensile strength of the welded alloy. A variation of 150 microns in particle size correlated with a 10 ksi variation of ultimate tensile strength. It was found that all fracture surfaces were of the dimple rupture type, with fracture initiating within the fusion zone.

Solid Rocket Motor Case (SRMC) dynamic sensitivity to changes in composite properties

Traditional composite lamination theory was used to compute the constitutive matrices using a potential range of lamina properties. Sensitivity of vibrational frequencies was examined for variations in constituent materials and geometric properties. The material component interactions examined were the lamina longitudinal and transverse Young's modulus, the lamina Poisson's ratio, and the shear modulus. Fiber and resin properties were related to the frequency response through lamina properties. Geometric properties examined are void ratio and helical wind angle. Capabilities and applications of the SPAR and NASTRAN computer codes are examined for laminated cylindrical shells.

Exploratory development of foams from liquid crystal polymers

Two types of liquid crystal polymer (LCP) compositions were studied and evaluated as structural foam materials. One is a copolymer of 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid, terephthalic acid, and p-acetoxyacetanilide (designed HNA/TA/AAA), and the other is a copolymer of p-hydroxybenzoic acid and 6-hydroxy-2-naphthoic acid (designated HBA/HNA). Experimental results showed that the extruded HNA/TA/AA foams have better mechanical quality and appearance than HBA/HNA foams. Heat treatment improved foam tensile strength and break elongation, but reduced their modulus. The injection molding results indicated that nitrogen foaming agents with a low-pressure process gave better void distribution in the injection molded LCP foams than those made by the conventional injection-molding machine and chemical blowing agents. However, in comparing LCP foams with other conventional plastic foams, HBA/HNA foams have better mechanical properties than foamed ABS and PS, but are comparable to PBT and inferior to polycarbonate foams, especially in heat-deflection temperature and impact resistance energy. These deficiencies are due to LCP molecules not having been fully oriented during the Union-Carbide low-pressure foaming process.

Packaging for Food Service

Most of the key areas of concern in packaging the three principle food forms for the space station were covered. It can be generally concluded that there are no significant voids in packaging materials availability or in current packaging technology. However, it must also be concluded that the process by which packaging decisions are made for the space station feeding program will be very synergistic. Packaging selection will depend heavily on the preparation mechanics, the preferred presentation and the achievable disposal systems. It will be important that packaging be considered as an integral part of each decision as these systems are developed.

Optimization of the catalytic oxidation of CO for closed-cycle CO2 laser applications

This report develops a basis for the design of a catalyst bed for the recombination of CO and O2 in a closed-cycle CO2 laser system. The catalyst is 1% Pt on SnO2 having a BET surface area of 6.7 sq m/g and a specific void volume of 0.374 cu cm/g. The design conditions are: a catalyst bed temperature of 100 C and a circulating flow rate of 10 lambda/min. Under these conditions, the required quantity of catalyst for prolonged laser operation of 668g. The rat law for the reaction of a stoichiometric mixture of 1% CO + 1/2% O2 in helium was determined to be overall first order; however, additional experiments with non-stoichiometric gas mixtures of CO and O2 are needed to determine the order of the CO concentration and the order of the O2 concentration in the rate law.

Iron rich low cost superalloys

An iron-rich low-cost superalloy was developed. The alloy, when processed by conventional chill casting, has physical and mechanical properties that compare favorably with existing nickel and cobalt based superalloys while containing significantly lower amounts of strategic elements. Studies were also made on the properties of Cr(20)-Mn(10)-C(3.4)-Fe(bal.), a eutectic alloy processed by chill casting and directional solidification which produced an aligned microstructure consisting of M7C3 fibers in a gamma-Fe matrix. Thermal expansion of the M7C3 (M = Fe, Cr, Mn) carbide lattice was measured up to 800 C and found to be highly anisotropic, with the a-axis being the predominant mode of expansion. Repetitive impact sliding wear experiments performed with the Fe rich eutectic alloy showed that the directionally solidified microstructure greatly improved the alloy's wear resistance as compared to the chill cast microstructure and conventional nickel base superalloys. Studies on the molybdenum cementite phase prove that the crystal structure of the xi phase is not orthorhombic. The crystal structure of the xi phase is made up of octahedra building elements consisting of four Mo and two Fe atoms and trigonal prisms consisting of four Fe and two Mo atoms. The voids are occupied by carbon atoms. The previous chemical formula for the molybdenum cementite MoFe2C is now clearly seen to be Mo12Fe22C10.

Role of Hydrogen and Structure on CMSX-2

The goal was to characterize and understand the detailed effect of hydrogen on the tensile and fatigue behavior of single crystals of CMSX-2. Specimens were solutionized, air cooled, and then aged in one of two ways. The resultant macro and microstructure included a pronounced dendritic structure with numerous low angle boundaries in the interdendritic region and on the average a high level of porosity with a large variation in size and distribution. Hydrogen permeability and diffusivity in this material was found to be very low at room temperature. Hydrogen concentration studies on thin samples yielded values significantly higher than found for similar charging conditions in nickel and stainless steels. The tensile mechanical properties were found to depend on hydrogen concentration. SEM observations of the brittle subsurface zone revealed a strong correlation between crack initiation sites and voids just beneath the surface. The hollow and solid samples were compared to better understand the influence of increased charged volume on the fatigue behavior.

Micromechanics of high temperature deformation and failure

The micromechanics of the constitutive behavior of elastoplastic materials at high temperatures was examined. The experimental work focused on the development of microscopic defects in superalloys (Waspaloy), especially the formation of voids at grain boundary carbides, and slip induced surface cracks within grains upon cyclic loading at high temperatures. The influence of these defects on the life expectancy of the material was examined. The theoretical work consists of two parts: (1) analytical description of the mechanisms that lead to defects observed experimentally; and (2) development of macroscopic elastoplastic nonlinear constitutive relations based on mechanical modeling.

Interpretation of photometric measurements of airless bodies

The scattering properties of the surfaces of airless bodies were observed. These properties are controlled primarily by the following physical parameters: the single scattering albedo, the single particle phase function, the porosity of the upper regolith, and large scale roughness. Comparison of the observations with scattering models reveals both similarities and differences among the airless bodies in the solar system. The textural characteristics of the regolithms of icy satellites appear to be generally similar to those of the Moon and Mercury; differences in the scattering functions are attributed to albedo alone. A notable exception is Europa, which has a much more compact regolith. Io has an especially porous regolith, with void space of about 90%. Although the solar phase curves of the Moon and Mercury are similar, Mercury's phase curve drops off less rapidly at solar phase angles greater than 100 degrees. It is suggested that the Moon is rougher at scales larger than a few mm.

Numerical experiments on galaxy clustering in open universes

Numerical studies were performed on the dynamical effects on the evolution of clumps, filaments, voids, and galaxy clusters by various final Omega values. The final Omega values examined ranged from 0.03-1, and attention was given to defining observations of superclusters which would aid in determining an actual value for Omega. The numerical trials consisted of n-body integration programs governed by the total expansion and final Omega value and included comparisons between results for open and closed universes. All runs started from the same initial conditions. The dispersion trajectories of particles and the final galactic cluster forms were found to be equivalent, regardless of the final Omega value. The possibility of deriving a value for Omega from velocity data on galaxies which have not yet joined clusters is discussed.

Microstructural development of protective Al2O3 scales

Microstructural characteristics of Al2O3 scales grown as protective coatings on NiCrAl alloys used in jet engines are described. The alloys were pure or doped with 0.3 percent Zr or Y and oxidized in 1 atm air at 1100 C for 0.1, 1 or 20.0 hr. The scales were then examined under a microscope. Transient epitaxial scales, formed during the 0.1 hr treatment and containing Ni, Cr and Al, consisted of a mosaic of subgrains and precipitates of different phases. The Y and Zr dopants had no effect on the nucleation site locations. The appearance of intergranular porosity at 0.1 hr was exacerbated after the 1 hr treatment. A bimodal void distribution appeared after 20 hr, when no porosity was evident. The detection of local areas of preferred orientation is taken as a spur to further studies of scale growth to gain control of the grain size or even to produce single crystal scales.

Ramp technique for dc partial discharge testing

The partial discharge (PD) data presently obtained by means of a stepwise ramp technique, for the cases of high voltage (HV) components and such resin-packaged HV devices as the Space Telescope's Faint Object Camera, is acquired separately on part-way ramps to rated voltage and on the intermediate voltage plateaus. For test specimens intended for dc service, this ramp method yields more data on insulation integrity than quiescent dc measurements, especially in the case of specimens of high resistivity which causes the discharge frequency to be deceptively low at constant dc voltage. During upward ramping the voltage distribution is capacitive, and the PD behavior resembles that of an ac test. Many more pulses are obtained in the voids without the heat otherwise generated by the application of 60-Hz ac. PD histograms are presented for various materials, with and without intentional defects.

Energetic particles in the inner magnetosphere of Saturn

Present knowledge of energetic particles in Saturn's inner magnetosphere (within about ten Saturn radii) is reviewed. Rings of particulate matter and the satellites inside 10 Saturn radii reduce the population of particles with energy above 0.5 MeV to values of the order 1000 times less than would otherwise be present. On the other hand, sputtering and outgassing of satellite surfaces injects gas into the system. All trapped particles lie outside the magnetic shell through the outer edge of Ring A. The radial distribution of very energetic protons with energies above tens of MeV exhibits three major peaks at 3.37, 2.68, and 2.44 Saturn radii, each of which is bounded by nearly complete voids associated with rings and satellites. The distribution of electrons with energies above 0.040 MeV extends throughout the magnetosphere with an internal boundary at the outer edge of Ring A and exhibits spectral features indicative of relatively unimpeded resonant diffusion across the orbits of satellites.
