Sparse-Data Deep Learning Strategies for Radiographic Non-Destructive Testing

Radiography is an imaging technique used in a variety of applications, such as medical diagnosis, airport security, and nondestructive testing. We present a deep learning system for extracting information from radiographic images. We perform various prediction tasks using our system, including material classification and regression on the dimensions of a given object that is being radiographed. Our system is designed to address the sparse-data issue for radiographic nondestructive testing applications. It uses a radiographic simulation tool for synthetic data augmentation, and it uses transfer learning with a pre-trained convolutional neural network model. Using this system, our preliminary results indicate that the object geometry regression task saw an improvement of 70% in the R-squared value when using a multi-regime model. In addition, we increase the performance of the object material classification tasks by utilizing data from different imaging systems. In particular, using neutron imaging improved the material classification accuracy by 20% when compared to x-ray imaging.

Testing of Fusion Machine Components Against Cryogenic Pellet Impacts

Shattered pellet injection (SPI), currently the most effective method of disruption mitigation, is currently implemented on tokamaks worldwide for experimental purposes. Cryogenic pellets are formed and fired into an angled surface before entering the plasma. The impact with the angled surface causes the pellets to fragment into a cloud of particles with the purpose of increasing the surface area for ablation. As pellets traverse guide tubes, depending on design, there is a chance of an off-normal pellet impact. Pellet impacts are also, depending on design, possible in the plasma chamber if not fully ablated and assimilated, or if the fragment plume is not directed in the proper direction. This paper outlines a series of pellet impact tests on various tiles and components relevant to the ITER, JET, and ASDEX Upgrade SPI systems. In conclusion, testing was done to assess the potential damage from pellet and fragment plume impacts through high-speed imaging and the visual inspection of components.

An open-source framework for simulation-based testing of buildings control strategies

Here this paper presents a simulation framework for evaluating building control strategies (BCSs), developed with VOLTTRON, an opensource platform that integrates data, devices, and systems for sensing and control applications, and is based on co-simulation interfaces. It realizes an integrated environment for both testing and deploying BCSs, thereby eliminating the need for having a dedicated implementation of BCS for testing. For the first time, this framework provides critical functionalities, including scalable communication management and time-drive simulation advance, i.e., advancing the simulation based on clock time. We applied this framework to evaluating two BCSs from ASHRAE Guideline 36-2008 and ASHRAE Standard 90.1-2019. The evaluation results show that those BCSs primarily benefit the heating operation by reducing gas usage but yield insignificant savings in electricity consumption. The results also emphasize the importance of tuning the parameters of the BCSs to achieve better performances.

Wave Energy Converter Power Take-Off Modeling and Validation From Experimental Bench Tests

This article describes the implementation of a new numerical model of the power take-off system installed in the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute wave energy converter, a device developed to provide power to various oceanic research missions. The simultaneous presence of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical subsystems in the power take-off system represents a significant challenge in forging an accurate model able to replicate the main dynamic characteristics of the system. The validation of the new numerical model is addressed by comparing simulations with the measurements obtained during a series of bench tests. Data from the bench tests show good agreement with the numerical model. The validated model provides deeper insights into the complex nonlinear dynamics of the power take-off system and will support further performance improvements in the future.

Validation of Advanced Photovoltaic Module Materials and Processes by Combined-Accelerated Stress Testing (C-AST)

Tessolar module technology was developed to allow the incorporation of 5 incremental module material innovations. Combined, these innovations may improve the efficiency and durability of the standard silicon cell module. The innovations evaluated are: electrically conductive adhesive (ECA) replacing soldering of tabbing ribbons, light-capturing ribbon (LCR), silicone encapsulant, 2 mm front glass with backsheet, and a polymer-composite module frame. Tessolar-constructed individually encapsulated cells incorporating the material innovations are used to assemble 60-cell modules. 2 x 2 cell mini-modules of the same materials were produced for combined-accelerated stress testing (C-AST). C-AST results demonstrate that the 2 x 2 cell mini-module of Tessolar construction out-performed mini-modules using both ECA with EVA and standard solder with EVA constructions in power production over 108 cycles of testing.

Field-Aging Test Bed for Behind-the-Meter PV + Energy Storage

Small DC-coupled battery test systems are deployed at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory to evaluate capacity fade models and report on performance parameters such as round-trip efficiency under indoor and outdoor deployment scenarios. Initial commercial battery products include LG Chem RESU lithium-ion (Li-ion) and Avalon vanadium redox flow batteries. Adapting indoor lab-scale test methods to outdoor systems has challenges, including maintaining constant temperature and fully controlling batteries through standard discharge curves. Initial measurements show the Li-ion battery systems performing within expectations, near 85% round-trip efficiency. Initial lifetime modeling and measurements indicate that battery capacity could degrade by 20%-35% over 10 years at current rates.

Assessment of Accelerated Stress Testing Data for Silicon Photovoltaics Using Tensor Decomposition Methods

In this work, we examine the use of high-order tensor decompositions to analyze degradation pathways emerging from accelerated stress testing of silicon photovoltaic (PV) modules. Matrix-based decompositions are powerful tools for studying two-dimensional data arrays and form the foundation of a host of classical data analysis techniques. Tensors are high-order extrapolations of matrices that are able to account for more parameter dimensions, and a variety of tensor decomposition methods have been developed that similarly seek to extend insights from matrix decompositions to higher dimensions. Applying and interpreting tensor decomposition methods to sequences of PV module image data, we seek to uncover and isolate different degradation modes occurring from accelerated stress testing procedures. Further, we consider the contributions of different modes to PV module performance degradations.

Using an Advanced Distribution Management System Test Bed to Evaluate the Impact of Model Quality on Volt/VAR Optimization: Preprint

In this paper, we present a test bed for evaluating existing and future advanced distribution management system (ADMS) applications in a realistic laboratory setting, including other utility management systems and field equipment. We present an example of using it to evaluate the impact of the ADMS network model quality on a Volt/VAR optimization (VVO) application. The test bed integrates a commercial ADMS with a real-time simulation model of a utility distribution feeder. Representative power and controller hardware are integrated through hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) techniques. The performance of the ADMS VVO application is also evaluated for different levels of measurement density. Initial results indicate that a higher model quality achieves the highest possible energy savings while avoiding voltage violations, whereas a lower model quality results in increased energy savings but at the expense of more voltage violations.

Scoping Analysis of Sodium Cooled Fast Spectrum Test Reactor Cores

A team from the national laboratories conducted a study that assessed advanced reactor technology options and the irradiation needs of a broad group of stakeholders. This identified a gap in the fast neutron irradiation capability - the need for a test reactor that can deliver high neutron fluxes of fast neutrons. The study compared fast and thermal neutron irradiation technology options based on technology maturity and the ability to meet strategic objectives, along with pathways to deployment and tradeoffs in mission. It also provided a recommendation on specific technology options to address the current gap in fast neutron irradiation capabilities. In this context, a detailed scope of work was prepared that pertains to a trade study focusing on the core of a fast neutron spectrum test reactor. This report presents the main results obtained by a team of Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and Idaho National Laboratory (INL) scientists. It aims at developing an overall understanding of how the various areas important to the design and successful operation of such a facility interact with one another. Developing a sense of the relevant sensitivities at a systems level creates an understanding of where and how margins may be available to improve performances (e.g., flux level, capacity factor, and thermal hydraulic limits). Emphasis is given to the reactor (core design options and safety) and its fuel cycle (fuel supply and fabrication, as well as spent fuel management).

Brief Overview of the ASD Integrated Test Stand, Activities and Hazards

The ITS venue provides the first opportunity to fully assemble and test the performance of the injector; integrate, assemble and test four modules; measure the severity of the Beam Break-Up instability and perform the first set of beam measurements. Figure 1 shows a high level configuration of the ITS without the system of overhead cable management trays. The final configuration will integrate the injector, 4 modules (12 accelerator cells), 264 SSPP Line Replaceable Units (LRUs), global controls, data acquisition, and a subset of the downstream transport, Table 1. This was chosen because it provides the minimum accelerator cells required to measure the Beam Break-Up (BBU) instability and perform measurements required to validate the ASD beam transport computer models, which are priority measurements for commissioning.
