Medium Voltage Power Electronics Enabling DER and Increasing Climate Resiliency

As renewables grow to meet both increased decarbonization and electrification goals, functionality such as grid-forming capability needs to be developed. Medium-voltage power electronic-enabled interfaces for renewables and as new devices within the grid themselves are an ideal platform for implementing these functionalities.

AN INITIAL LOOK AT THE HEAT PIPE RESILIENCY TO REACTOR OPERATION

Several special purpose reactor designs are aiming to utilize heat pipes due to its inherently passive features allowing safe heat removal to the power conversion systems. There is insufficient data on heat pipe survivability in reactor environments, although heat-pipe failures are predicted to have low failure rates. In this paper, we perform a coupled neutronics and thermo-mechanics analyses for a 45 kWth HALEU fueled, hydride moderated homogenous design to evaluate the transient effects during both startup and a heatpipe-failure scenario. The heatpipe-failure study includes both a single failure case and a failure-propagation (cascading) case. While the model only evaluates a homogenous core, the approach could be applied to more complex models for any heat pipe cooled small reactor.

Autonomous Energy Systems: Building Reliable, Resilient, and Secure Electrified Communities

Technological changes across energy systems are forcing utilities and operators to reconsider their methods for managing power delivery, but few operators have adopted advanced controls and operational software. Their challenge is that every system has peculiar requirements, and the available solutions are relatively new, untested, and difficult to integrate into an operational environment. Through extensive collaboration with utilities and cooperatives, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory has realized the need for autonomous and optimized management of energy resources, leading to the development of Autonomous Energy Systems, a packaged set of controls that is ready to be integrated into existing control rooms.

Extreme Weather Impact on PV - Resilience Lessons for Long-Term Performance

Aside from the immediate, visible damage, extreme weather events have a longer lasting impact on PV systems. Here, NREL's Dirk C. Jordan, Kirsten Perry, Robert White, Josh Parker, Byron McDanold and Chris Deline report on research revealing the long-term consequences of hail, wind and other weather phenomena on PV production

Interoperable, Inverter-Based Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) Enable 100% Renewable and Resilient Utility Microgrids

Project overcomes frequency stability and system control issues when operating distribution microgrids in a low inertia, high PV penetration environment without fossil fuel generators. The team implemented a grid-forming inverter and advanced control features at SDG&E's Borrego Springs Microgrid to demonstrate islanding and blackstart using renewable resources. Simulation and emulation in advance of deployment de-risks field operations.

Airships as Transformative Tools for Power Systems Logistics: Addressing Infrastructure Challenges and Enhancing Disaster Resilience

Airships represent a transformative advancement in logistics, particularly for the power systems industry. Their unique ability to transport heavy equipment and personnel efficiently over remote or disaster-stricken areas, while requiring minimal infrastructure, addresses critical gaps left by traditional methods. Combining adaptability with environmental sustainability, airships offer a low-carbon alternative for routine operations and emergency responses. This review presents current developments in airship technology, such as rigid airships designed for large payloads, demonstrate their potential to revolutionize supply chains.
