On orthogonal expansions of the space of vector functions which are square-summable over a given domain and the vector analysis operators

The Hilbert space L2(omega) of vector functions is studied. A breakdown of L2(omega) into orthogonal subspaces is discussed and the properties of the operators for projection onto these subspaces are investigated from the standpoint of preserving the differential properties of the vectors being projected. Finally, the properties of the operators are examined.

The magnifying glass - A feature space local expansion for visual analysis

The Magnifying Glass Transformation (MGT) technique is proposed, as a multichannel spectral operation yielding visual imagery which is enhanced in a specified spectral vicinity, guided by the statistics of training samples. An application example is that in which the discrimination among spectral neighbors within an interactive display may be increased without altering distant object appearances or overall interpretation. A direct histogram specification technique is applied to the channels within the multispectral image so that a subset of the spectral domain occupies an increased fraction of the domain. The transformation is carried out by obtaining the training information, establishing the condition of the covariance matrix, determining the influenced solid, and initializing the lookup table. Finally, the image is transformed.

Magnetohydrodynamic modeling of coronal structure and expansion

The presence of a magnetic field in the corona adds structure to the solar wind and almost certainly plays an important role in the energetics of the flow. Analytical and numerical modeling of gas-magnetic field interactions as used to compute steady, global flow are discussed. The approach used in, and results from a recent global model (Steinolfson, Suess and Wu, 1982) are discussed. Ideas on the most effective ways to improve the physical content and numerical efficiency of these models are outlined. Solutions of the MHD equations are discussed only in order to find steady-state flows, even though this often entails solving time-dependent equations.

Experimental observations of self-similar plasma expansion

The present investigation is concerned with measurements of the plasma potential profile of an expanding plasma, taking into account the demonstration of the self-similar behavior of such a plasma. The obtained experimental results are consistent with self-similar solutions reported by Crow et al. (1975). It is found that the quasi-neutrality condition breaks down early during the experiment. A consideration of the effect of charge separation is, therefore, required. Attention is given to the evolution of the potential profiles of the expanding plasma as a function of time, the accelerated ion fronts, and the sheath formation of the expanding plasma into a floating boundary.

Discrete orthogonal function expansions for non-uniform grids using the fast Fourier transform

A technique for applying discrete Fourier series to infinite domains is presented. The technique uses mappings designed to minimize truncation error and can be applied to solve mixed initial boundary value problems among others. The method is alias-free and yields consistent differentiation and integration operators. The mapping-induced truncation error is explicitly expressible and small in nearly all cases of interest. The method is illustrated for three problems involving convection, diffusion, and vortex interaction.

Hardware/Software Expansion of Display Terminal and CPU

IBM PC coupling used to expand capabilities of expensive specialpurpose system. IBM PC was interfaced to Tektronix CP1151 computer through teletype port of Tektronix 4010-1 computer display terminal. Electronic interface built to provide isolation, level shifting, and signal inversion between IBM PC RS-232 port and 4010-1 terminal teletype port. Modifications to 4010-1 terminal made to increase teletype rate from 110 to 9,600 baud. Software for both computers developed to give control of DPO system to IBM PC and provide data/program file exchange between two computers. Coupling demonstrates utilization of low-cost microcomputer hardware and software to expand capabilities of expensive special-purpose computer systems.

The construction and use of divergence free vector expansions for incompressible fluid flow calculations

For incompressible fluids the law of mass conservation reduces to a constraint on the velocity vector, namely that it be divergence free. This constraint has long been a source of great difficulty to the numericist seeking to discretize the Navier-Stokes and Euler equations. A spectral method is discussed which overcomes this difficulty. Its efficacy is demonstrated on some simple problems. The velocity is approximated by a finite sum of divergence free vectors, each of which satisfies the same boundary conditions as the velocity. Projecting the governing equation onto the space of inviscid vector fields eliminates the pressure term and produces a set of ordinary differential equations that must be solved for the coefficents in the velocity. The pressure can then be recovered if it is needed.

Energetic particle beams in the plasma sheet boundary layer following substorm expansion - Simultaneous near-earth and distant tail observations

Simultaneous observations of ions and electron beams in the near-earth and deep magnetotail following the onset of substorm are analyzed in terms of the substorm neutral line model. The observations were collected on March 20, 1983 with ISSE 1 and 3. Energy fluxes and intensity-time profiles of protons and electrons are studied. The data reveal that the reconnection at the near-earth neutral line produces ions and electrons for the plasma sheet boundary layer. The maximum electric potential along the neutral line is evaluated.

Army technology development. IBIS query. Software to support the Image Based Information System (IBIS) expansion for mapping, charting and geodesy

The Image Based Information System (IBIS) has been under development at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) since 1975. It is a collection of more than 90 programs that enable processing of image, graphical, tabular data for spatial analysis. IBIS can be utilized to create comprehensive geographic data bases. From these data, an analyst can study various attributes describing characteristics of a given study area. Even complex combinations of disparate data types can be synthesized to obtain a new perspective on spatial phenomena. In 1984, new query software was developed enabling direct Boolean queries of IBIS data bases through the submission of easily understood expressions. An improved syntax methodology, a data dictionary, and display software simplified the analysts' tasks associated with building, executing, and subsequently displaying the results of a query. The primary purpose of this report is to describe the features and capabilities of the new query software. A secondary purpose of this report is to compare this new query software to the query software developed previously (Friedman, 1982). With respect to this topic, the relative merits and drawbacks of both approaches are covered.

Spherical harmonic expansions of the Earth's gravitational potential to degree 360 using 30' mean anomalies

Two potential coefficient fields that are complete to degree and order 360 have been computed. One field (OSU86E) excludes geophysically predicted anomalies while the other (OSU86F) includes such anomalies. These fields were computed using a set of 30' mean gravity anomalies derived from satellite altimetry in the ocean areas and from land measurements in North America, Europe, Australia, Japan and a few other areas. Where no 30' data existed, 1 deg x 1 deg mean anomaly estimates were used if available. No rigorous combination of satellite and terrestrial data was carried out. Instead advantage was taken of the adjusted anomalies and potential coefficients from a rigorous combination of the GEML2' potential coefficient set and 1 deg x 1 deg mean gravity anomalies. The two new fields were computed using a quadrature procedure with de-smoothing factors. The spectra of the new fields agree well with the spectra of the fields with 1 deg x 1 deg data out to degree 180. Above degree 180 the new fields have more power. The fields have been tested through comparison of Doppler station geoid undulations with undulations from various geopotential models. The agreement between the two types of undulations is approximately + or - 1.6 m. The use of a 360 field over a 180 field does not significantly improve the comparison. Instead it allows the comparison to be done at some stations where high frequency effects are important. In addition maps made in areas of high frequency information (such as trench areas) clearly reveal the signal in the new fields from degree 181 to 360.

Expansion of epicyclic gear dynamic analysis program

The multiple mesh/single stage dynamics program is a gear tooth analysis program which determines detailed geometry, dynamic loads, stresses, and surface damage factors. The program can analyze a variety of both epicyclic and single mesh systems with spur or helical gear teeth including internal, external, and buttress tooth forms. The modifications refine the options for the flexible carrier and flexible ring gear rim and adds three options: a floating Sun gear option; a natural frequency option; and a finite element compliance formulation for helical gear teeth. The option for a floating Sun incorporates two additional degrees of freedom at the Sun center. The natural frequency option evaluates the frequencies of planetary, star, or differential systems as well as the effect of additional springs at the Sun center and those due to a flexible carrier and/or ring gear rim. The helical tooth pair finite element calculated compliance is obtained from an automated element breakup of the helical teeth and then is used with the basic gear dynamic solution and stress postprocessing routines. The flexible carrier or ring gear rim option for planetary and star spur gear systems allows the output torque per carrier and ring gear rim segment to vary based on the dynamic response of the entire system, while the total output torque remains constant.

Expansion velocity and temperatures of gas and ions measured in the coma of Comet Halley

In situ measurements of flow velocity and temperature in the inner coma were obtained from ram energy spectra of molecules and ions observed by the Giotto neutral mass spectrometer. Radial flow speed is 800 km/sec; near 2,500 km from the nucleus increasing to more than 1000 m/sec at 20,000 km. A near zero volt spacecraft potential was inferred. Ion temperatures are approx. 200 K inside the contact surface (approx. 4500 km) where the plasma is collisionally coupled to the gas; at this boundary ion temperature rises by approx. 1000 K. The observations indicate a heat source which is effective to large distances.
