Internal Friction Measures to Study Precipitates Formation in EP and N-Doped Bulk Nb for SRF Applications

Main focus of this study is the investigation of thermodynamics phenomena responsible for the High Field Q Slope (HFQS) in SRF cavities by Internal Friction (IF) measurement. Mechanical spectroscopy is, indeed, a well-established technique to study precipitate formations in BCC materials and several works on the effects of impurities as N and O on the Snoek peak have been published so far and will be taken as reference to explain the mechanisms behind the observed dissipation effects. Internal Friction measurements were performed in Belgium at IMCE on Nb rectangular shape samples with different RRR values prepared at Fermilab by using Electro Polishing (EP), N-doping and heat treatments in order to reproduce the same conditions during the standard treatments applied on bulk Nb SRF cavities. From IF spectra, the H trapping mechanism by interstitial atoms (N and O and/or vacancies, depending on the purity level, RRR) can be easily recognized leading to results that perfectly corroborate previous findings on Q-disease, HFQS and RRR phenomena.

Numerical Study on the Effect of Methane Doping in Hydrogen-Air Rotating Detonation Engines for Various Temperatures and Pressures

Rotating detonation engines (RDEs) have gained attention as a promising technology for future aviation engines. However, the numerical studies of these systems pose severe challenges due to the broad range of spatial and temporal scales. In this study, we use an adaptive mesh refinement based compressible, reactive solver PeleC to resolve the broad range of scales and accurately capture shock and detonation waves using high-resolution numerical schemes. Multi- species transport along with compressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved in the model along with a finite-rate based chemistry model. Embedded boundary method is used to model the complex geometry consisting of discrete fuel nozzles and the combustion chamber. The fuel consisting predominantly of hydrogen is doped with varying levels of methane while air is used as the oxidizer. For a specified total pressure and temperature, the number of stable detonation waves is found to decrease with increasing methane concentration in the fuel mixture. Additionally, no stable detonation solutions are observed for methane composition higher than 20% by volume for the range of operating conditions studied (300-900K, 10 Atm). The increased presence of high temperature zones is also indicative of higher thermal NOx emissions at low methane concentrations. The effect of fuel-air mixture composition and temperature on the detonability, detonation wave structure, mode transitions and their stability are analyzed in this study in addition to their implication on NOx emission.

Method of chemical doping that uses CMOS-compatible processes

A method of Atomic Precision Advanced Manufacturing (APAM) is provided, in which a substrate is doped from a dopant precursor gas. The method involves covering a surface of the substrate with a hard mask, selectively removing material from the hard mask such that selected areas of the substrate surface are laid bare, exposing the laid-bare areas to the dopant precursor gas, and heating the substrate so as to incorporate dopant from the dopant precursor gas into the substrate surface.

Tunable doping of carbon nanotubes through engineered atomic layer deposition

A carbon nanotube field effect transistor (CNFET), that has a channel formed of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), includes a layered deposit of a nonstoichiometric doping oxide (NDO), such as HfOX, where the concentration of the NDO varies through the thickness of the layer(s). An n-type metal-oxide semiconductor (NMOS) CNFET made in this manner can achieve similar ON-current, OFF-current, and/or threshold voltage magnitudes to a corresponding p-type metal-oxide semiconductor (PMOS) CNFET. Such an NMOS and PMOS can be used to achieve a symmetric complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) CNFET design.

Decoupling of Nitrogen and Oxygen Impurities in Nitrogen Doped SRF Cavities

The performance of superconducting radiofrequency (SRF) cavities is critical for enabling the next generation of efficient high-energy particle accelerators. Recent developments have focused on altering the surface impurity profile through \textit{in-situ} baking, furnace baking, and doping to introduce and diffuse beneficial impurities such as nitrogen, oxygen, and carbon. However, the precise role and properties of each impurity are not well understood. In this work, we attempt to disentangle the role of nitrogen and oxygen impurities through time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry using niobium cavity cutouts baked at temperatures varying from 120-800$^\circ$C with and without nitrogen injection. Understanding the underlying mechanisms behind these impurities will drive further optimization in the tailoring of nitrogen and oxygen profiles for high-performance SRF cavities.

Optimization of Sb-doped CdSeTe Solar Cells

The effect of high-temperature annealing (HTA) treatments and Cd-excess during the in-situ doping of CdSeTe:Sb is investigated. Optimized treatments eliminate the wurtzite phase from the as-deposited CdSeTe layer, while facilitating Se intermixing and grain size enhancement before CdCl2 treatment. The improved device stack quality results in a VOC improvement of 250 mV. VOC is further improved by tuning the Cd/Sb flux ratio during CdSeTe:Sb deposition. The lowest defect concentration is achieved at Cd/Sb of 1.4:1, which produced the best VOC CdSeTe:Sb cell with VOC = 849mV, despite a decreased carrier concentration due to the harsh CdCl2 treatment.

Predicting Li-ion Battery Performance for Impurity-doped NMC Cathodes Using Deep Learning

With the electric vehicle (EV) market expansion and the energy sector's shift towards electrification, the demand for battery metals, including lithium (Li), cobalt (Co), and nickel (Ni), is set to surpass supply. A critical knowledge gap exists in the purity standards for battery precursors and the impact of impurities on battery performance. Addressing this, our study employs a Deep Machine Learning (DL) based multi-objective optimization approach to interpret the relationship between metal impurities in domestic battery resources and their effects on battery performance. We analyze experimental data from Li-ion batteries with NMC (Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt oxide) cathodes over 1000 cycles, representing approximately ~6-8 months of operation, to establish a baseline of performance without impurities. Leveraging this data, we develop a Physics-Informed Deep Learning (PIDL) framework to extend our findings to cases that include metal impurities (e.g., Fe, Cu, Al) ranging from (0.001 - 0.01) %, respectively. By incorporating physics-based features, our PIDL model can accurately estimate the performance of NMC cathodes doped with various metal impurities to provide rapid design decisions. This research paves the way for informed decisions in Li-ion battery material design and optimization, ensuring the sustainable growth of the EV market and the broader energy sector.

Enhancing Chemical Interaction of Polysulfide and Carbon through Synergetic Nitrogen and Phosphorus Doping

The shuttling effect of the polysulfide (PS) is the most detrimental factor that causes capacity fading of Li–S batteries. By substituting carbon atoms with heteroatoms, the host materials can provide a chemical interaction with PS to trap it within the electrochemically active range of the cathode. In this study, first-principles-based calculations identify the most stable nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) codoped atomic structures and their corresponding adsorption energy toward different PS species. Based on the simulated predictions, we introduce a glucosamine-derived carbon nanotube aerogel (CNA) with a secondary dopant of P during the synergetic polymerization and carbonization process. The N–P codoped CNA and S composite (NPCNA-S) renders a highly stable performance even at a sulfur loading of 3.5 mg cm –2 . In conclusion, the specific capacity is >900 mAh g –1 and the stabilized capacity retention is >70% over 450 cycles at 0.2 C rate (1 C = 1675 mA g –1 ).

Doping CdTe and CdSeTe for higher efficiency

Thin film cadmium telluride is one of the most successful photovoltaic technologies on the market today. Second only to silicon in yearly output and accounting for 40% of U.S. utility-scale photovoltaic installation, CdTe is known for its ease of manufacture, ideal bandgap, and low levelized cost of energy. Despite its commercial success, CdTe underperforms compared to its theoretical potential. The current world record CdTe device is only 21.0% compared to a theoretical maximum of 33.1%. This significant discrepancy in efficiencies can mostly be attributed to the poor open-circuit voltage of CdTe devices. Compared to silicon technologies, CdTe has a large voltage deficiency, exceeding 250 mV.

Surface Doping Boosts Triplet Generation Yield in Perovskite-Sensitized Upconversion

Triplet–triplet annihilation-based photon upconversion (TTA-UC) can efficiently generate higher energy photons at low relative fluences. Bulk metal halide perovskites have offered promise in efficiently sensitizing molecular triplet states in the solid state, necessary for the integration of TTA-UC into device-based applications. Recent work focused on TTA-UC from a rubrene triplet annihilator sensitized by perovskite thin films has established relatively efficient charge extraction from the perovskite, forming the triplet exciton in rubrene. Yet, the specifics underpinning charge transfer at the perovskite/rubrene interface are not fully elucidated. Here, to improve device performance and study the properties governing charge transfer at the interface, various organic solvents are explored to treat the perovskite surface. Scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy show a difference in the electronic band structure, where both n- and p-type terminated perovskite surfaces are observed depending on the solvent used. Supported by optical spectroscopy, the impact of the perovskite electronic structure is monitored, indicating that n-type perovskite sensitizers feature higher TTA-UC efficiencies due to favorable band bending resulting in efficient hole-mediated triplet formation. Overall, the tuning of the electronic structure of the perovskite sensitizer through solvent treatment is shown to be a key force in tuning the mechanism of efficient triplet generation.

The Mechanism of Fluorine Doping for the Enhanced Lithium Storage Behavior in Cation-Disordered Cathode Oxide

Li-rich cation-disordered rock-salt (DRX) materials have emerged as promising candidates for high-capacity oxide cathodes. Their fluorinated variants have shown improved cycling stability with effectively suppressed oxygen loss. However, a comprehensive understanding of how fluorination impacts the multiscale structure and lithium transportation in DRX remains elusive in experiments. In this study, the neutron total scattering technique in conjunction with the advanced reverse Monte Carlo (RMC) fitting method is employed to characterize the intricate structure of Li 1.16 Ti 0.37 Ni 0.37 Nb 0.1 O 2 (LTNNO) and the fluorinated Li 1.2 Ti 0.35 Ni 0.35 Nb 0.1 O 1.8 F 0.2 (LTNNOF). Through rigorous statistical analysis, the multiscale structural evolution upon fluorination is quantified from atomic (≤5 Å) to long-range scale (≈100 Å). The local Li-rich environments around F induce a modest 2.4% increment in the number of fast Li 0TM (transition metal) channels. Crucially, at a broader scale, the proportion of 0TM channels participating in percolation increases significantly from 2.9% in LTNNO to 8.7% in LTNNOF. Fluorination improves the capacity release mainly through merging isolated fast Li channels into the percolation network. This work experimentally unravels the multiscale mechanism of fluorination-induced performance improvement in DRX materials and highlights the necessity of adopting an advanced RMC fitting method to obtain a full view of the complex structural features in developing high-capacity DRX cathodes.
