Hilbert-space fragmentation, multifractality, and many-body localization

Investigating many-body localization (MBL) using exact numerical methods is limited by the exponential growth of the Hilbert space. However, localized eigenstates display multifractality and only extend over a vanishing fraction of the Hilbert space. Here, building on this remarkable property, we develop a simple yet efficient decimation scheme to discard the irrelevant parts of the Hilbert space of the random-field Heisenberg chain. This leads to a Hilbert space fragmentation in small clusters, allowing to access larger systems at strong disorder. The MBL transition is quantitatively predicted, together with a geometrical interpretation of MBL multifractality as a shattering of the Hilbert space.

An SYK-inspired model with density–density interactions: Spectral & wave function statistics, Green’s function and phase diagram

The Sachdev–Ye–Kitaev (SYK) model is a rare example of a strongly-interacting system that is analytically tractable. Tractability arises because the model is largely structureless by design and therefore artificial: while the interaction is restricted to two-body terms, interaction matrix elements are “randomized” and therefore the corresponding interaction operator does not commute with the local density. Unlike conventional density–density-type interactions, the SYK-interaction is, in this sense, not integrable. We here investigate a variant of the (complex) SYK model, which restores this integrability. It features a randomized single-body term and a density–density-type interaction. We present numerical investigations suggesting that the model exhibits two integrable phases separated by several intermediate phases including a chaotic one. The chaotic phase carries several characteristic SYK-signatures including in the spectral statistics and the frequency scaling of the Green’s function and therefore should be adiabatically connected to the non-Fermi liquid phase of the original SYK model. Thus, our model Hamiltonian provides a bridge from the SYK-model towards microscopic realism.

Compact space and infrared behavior of the effective QCD

Highlights: • Infrared regime of the effective theory in the new quadratic gauge on 4-sphere is investigated. • Abelian dominance is observed in the ghost condensed vacuum of this theory on 4-sphere. • Curvature of 4-sphere does not change the infrared behavior of present theory on 4-sphere from that of the quadratic gauge fixed theory in Euclidean spacetime. • Mass of an off-diagonal gluon on 4-sphere becomes position dependent as a consequence of curvature of 4-sphere. We aim to investigate the infrared regime in the effective theory of the new quadratic gauge in the physical compact space by defining it on 4-sphere. Abelian dominance is characterized by off-diagonal gluons acquiring dynamical masses and it hints at existence of confinement. We do observe Abelian dominance in the ghost condensed vacuum of this theory on 4-sphere. Along with this observation, we find an unusual result that mass of an off-diagonal gluon on 4-sphere is position dependent in this theory as a consequence of the curved geometry. This suggests that the curvature of 4-sphere does not change the infrared behavior of present theory on 4-sphere from that of the theory with the same quadratic gauge in Euclidean spacetime as Abelian dominance is observed in Euclidean spacetime too while it has caused mass of an off-diagonal gluon on 4-sphere to be position dependent. The effective action in the confined phase on 4-sphere and that in the 4-dim Euclidean space are found to be identical in a profound outcome.

From Anderson localization on random regular graphs to many-body localization

Highlights: • Anderson transition from ergodicity to localization on random regular graphs (RRG). • Analytical, pool method, and exact-diagonalization study of correlations on RRG. • Many-body localization (MBL) to ergodicity transition: quantum dots and spin chains. • Dynamical eigenstate correlation functions in RRG and MBL problems. • Anderson localization on RRG as a toy model for MBL. The article reviews the physics of Anderson localization on random regular graphs (RRG) and its connections to many-body localization (MBL) in disordered interacting systems. Properties of eigenstate and energy level correlations in delocalized and localized phases, as well at criticality, are discussed. In the many-body part, models with short-range and power-law interactions are considered, as well as the quantum-dot model representing the limit of the “most long-range” interaction. Central themes – which are common to the RRG and MBL problems – include ergodicity of the delocalized phase, localized character of the critical point, strong finite-size effects, and fractal scaling of eigenstate correlations in the localized phase.

Dirac systems with magnetic field and position-dependent mass: Darboux transformations and equivalence with generalized Dirac oscillators

Highlights: • We construct Darboux transformations for Dirac systems with position-dependent mass. • Our systems are either Dirac oscillators or coupled to a magnetic field. • We use our Darboux transformation to construct new solvable Dirac systems. We construct a Darboux transformation for a class of two-dimensional Dirac systems at zero energy. Our starting equation features a position-dependent mass, a matrix potential, and an additional degree of freedom that can be interpreted either as a magnetic field perpendicular to the plane or a generalized Dirac oscillator interaction. We obtain a number of Darboux-transformed Dirac equations for which the zero energy solutions are exactly known.

Helicity, spin, and infra-zilch of light: A Lorentz covariant formulation

Highlights: • Spin and orbital parts of angular momentum. • The helicity tensor contains the helicity, spin and infra-zilch currents. • The helicity tensor is a Noether current for a duality-symmetric action. • Symmetry generator for the helicity tensor. • The helicity tensor is conserved in Lorenz gauge. In this paper, a novel conserved Lorentz covariant tensor, termed the helicity tensor, is introduced in Maxwell theory. The conservation of the helicity tensor expresses the conservation laws contained in the helicity array, introduced by Cameron et al. (2012), including helicity, spin, as well as the spin-flux or infra-zilch. The Lorentz covariance of the helicity tensor is in contrast to previous formulations of the helicity hierarchy of conservation laws, which required the non-Lorentz covariant transverse gauge. The helicity tensor is shown to arise as a Noether current for a variational symmetry of a duality-symmetric Lagrangian for Maxwell theory. This symmetry transformation generalizes the duality symmetry and includes the symmetry underlying the conservation of the spin part of the angular momentum.

Casimir effect in Very Special Relativity at finite temperature

Recently a great deal of interest in field theories formulated in a Lorentz violating framework has been developed. Here the Very Special Relativity (VSR) is considered. The main aspect in the VSR proposal is that laws of physics are invariant under the subgroups of the Poincaré group preserving the basic elements of special relativity. An important point is that the photon acquires a mass. In this context, the energy–momentum tensor for the electromagnetic field is calculated. From this, the Stefan–Boltzmann law and Casimir effect at finite temperature in VSR are obtained. The effects of temperature are introduced using the Thermo Field Dynamics (TFD) formalism. A comparative analysis with the Casimir effect for the standard electromagnetic case is developed.

Relativistic levels of mesic atoms

We revisit the derivation of the covariant two-body scalar-fermion equation with a Coulomb interaction, presented in a previous paper. We show that it can be given the formal aspect of a Dirac equation, but for the fact that the eigenvalue is also contained in one of the coefficients and thus it is not linearly included. The discussion of the boundary value problem is therefore different, although some properties of the Dirac equation can be recovered in an approximation bringing back to the concept of reduced mass. We discuss a mixed analytic-numerical method of solution which allows to obtain very accurate results and we calculate the lowest levels, states and QED corrections for pionic and kaonic atoms.

Nonergodic dynamics in disorder-free potentials

Highlights: • Dynamics in tilted lattices with harmonic confinement is reviewed. • Both spinless and spinful fermions are analyzed. • Local effective tilt is the relevant parameter for nonergodicity. • Neel or domain wall initial states are studied. • Domains with similar spin orientation act as transport and communication barriers. We review the dynamics of interacting particles in disorder-free potentials concentrating on a combination of a harmonic binding with a constant tilt. We show that a simple picture of an effective local tilt describes a variety of cases. Our examples include spinless fermions (as modeled by Heisenberg spin chain in a magnetic field), spinful fermions as well as bosons that enjoy a larger local on-site Hilbert space. We also discuss the domain-wall dynamics that reveals nonergodic features even for a relatively weak tilt as suggested by Doggen et al. (2020). By adding a harmonic potential on top of the static field we confirm that the surprising regular dynamics is not entirely due to Hilbert space shuttering. It seems better explained by the inhibited transport within the domains of identically oriented spins. Once the spin-1/2 restrictions are lifted as, e.g., for bosons, the dynamics involve stronger entanglement generation. Again for domain wall melting, the effect of the harmonic potential is shown to lead mainly to an effective local tilt.

Local indistinguishability and incompleteness of entangled orthogonal bases: Method to generate two-element locally indistinguishable ensembles

Highlights: • Local indistinguishability of orthogonal quantum states. • Bipartite and multipartite quantum ensembles. • Unextendible entangled bases and uncompletable entangled bases. • Two-element locally indistinguishable quantum ensembles. • Multiparty unextendible entangled bases with unextendibility in all partitions. We relate the phenomenon of local indistinguishability of orthogonal states with the properties of unextendibility and uncompletability of entangled bases for bipartite and multipartite quantum systems. We prove that all two-qubit unextendible entangled bases are of size three and they cannot be perfectly distinguished by separable measurements. We identify a method of constructing two-element orthogonal ensembles, based on the concept of unextendible entangled bases, that can potentially lead to information sharing applications. Two-element ensembles form the fundamental unit of ensembles, and yet does not offer locally indistinguishable ensembles for pure state elements. Going over to mixed states does open this possibility, but can be difficult to identify. The method provided using unextendible entangled bases can be used for their systematic generation. In multipartite systems, we find a class of unextendible entangled bases for which the unextendibility property remains conserved across all bipartitions. We also identify nonlocal operations, local implementation of which require entangled resource states from a higher-dimensional quantum system.

Quantum dynamics of photon in rainbow gravity

In the present article, quantum dynamics of the photon is investigated in the cosmic string spacetime via gravity’s rainbow. We solve the mDKP (massless Duffin–Kemmer–Petiau) equation exactly and obtain the energy spectrum of photon. Then, we solve the Maxwell equations in the same gravity’s rainbow background and show that the solutions obtained are equivalent to the results of the photon equation. The energy spectrum of the photon is analyzed for three different rainbow functions.

Geodesic motion around hairy black holes

In a recent paper Ovalle et al. (2021) it has been obtained new static black hole solutions with primary hairs by the Gravitational Decoupling. In this work we either study the geodesic motion of massive and massless particles around those solutions and restrict the values of the primary hairs by observational data. In particular, we obtain the effective potential, the innermost stable circular orbits, the marginally bounded orbit, and the periastron advance for time-like geodesics. In order to restrict the values taken by the primary hairs we explore their relationship with the rotation parameter of the Kerr black hole giving the same innermost stable circular orbit radius and give the numerical values for the supermassive black holes at Ark 564 and NGC 1365. The photon sphere and the impact parameter associated to null geodesics are also discussed.

Anisotropy of localized states in an anisotropic disordered medium

Highlights: • Mobility edges of the Anderson transition are unaffected by anisotropy alone. • The critical exponent of the Anderson localization transition is also unaffected. • Anderson localized eigenstates in an anisotropic medium retain substantial anisotropy. • Their anisotropy is weaker than expected from purely geometric considerations. • Modes with the longest lifetimes are found to be the most anisotropic. We study Anderson localization of a scalar wave in an ensemble of resonant point scatterers embedded in an anisotropic background medium. For uniaxial anisotropy of moderate strength, the mobility edges and the critical exponent of the localization transition are found to be unaffected by the anisotropy provided that the determinant of the anisotropy tensor is kept equal to one upon introducing the anisotropy. Localized modes have anisotropic spatial shapes although their anisotropy is weaker than the one expected from purely geometric considerations. The modes with the longest lifetimes are found to be the most anisotropic and their anisotropy increases with the size of the disordered medium.

The oscillatory anisotropy in the spatially flat cosmological models

Highlights: • Relations among asymptotic anisotropy and matter content. • A new scheme for obtaining physically motivated exact solutions. • The process of isotropization/anisotropization in cosmology. • The conversion among the anisotropy and the energy density into one another. In this manuscript, we investigate the oscillatory behaviour of the anisotropy in the diagonal Bianchi-I spacetimes. Our starting point is a simplification of Einstein’s equations using only observable or physical variables. As a consequence, we are able to: (a) Prove general results concerning the existence of oscillations of the anisotropy in the primordial and the late-time universe. For instance, in the expanding scenario, we show that a past weakly mixmaster behaviour (oscillations as we approach the Kasner solutions) might appear even with no violation of the usual energy conditions, while in the future, the pulsation (oscillations around isotropic solutions) seems to be most favoured; (b) Determine a large scheme for deriving classes of physically motivated exact solutions, and we give some (including the general barotropic perfect fluid and the magnetic one); (c) Understand the physical conditions for the occurrence of the isotropization or anisotropization during the cosmological evolution; (d) Understand how anisotropy and energy density are converted one into another. In particular, we call attention to the presence of a residue in the energy density in a late-time isotropic universe coming from its past anisotropic behaviour.

Gravity effects on Hawking radiation from charged black strings in Rastall theory

Highlights: • Introductory review of charged black strings in Rastall theory. • Detailed description of Hawking temperature. • Graphically Analysis of Hawking temperature. • Discuss the stability of charged black strings. The Rastall theory of gravity is the generalized form of the Einstein theory which describes the conservation law of energy and momentum tensor. In our work, we compute the charged black strings solution in the background of Rastall theory by applying the Newman–Janis approach. After computing the charged black strings solution in the background of Rastall theory, we study the thermodynamical property (i.e., Hawking temperature) for the charged black strings. Furthermore, we investigate the graphical representation of Hawking temperature via event horizon to check the stability conditions of charged black strings under the influence of Rastall theory. Moreover, we examine the modified Hawking temperature for charged black strings in Rastall theory by taking into account the quantum gravity effects. We also discuss the physical state of charged black strings under the effects of quantum gravity and spin parameter (appears due to Rastall theory in charged black strings solution).

Massless charged particles tunneling radiation from a RN-dS horizon and the linear and quadratic GUP

Highlights: • Generalized Uncertainty Principle (GUP). • Reissner–Nordstrom de Sitter (RNdS) spacetime. • Massless charged particles. • Tunneling through cosmological horizon. • Tunneling of spin fields. In this paper, we investigate the massless Reissner–Nordstrom de Sitter metric in the context of minimal length scenarios. We prove not only the confinement of the energy density of massless charged particles, both fermions and bosons, but also their ability to tunnel through the cosmological horizon. These massless particles might be interacting with Dirac sea and in this case they will appear outside the cosmological horizon in the context of dS/CFT holography. This result may formulate a fundamental reason for the expansion of the Dirac sea. Therefore, a spacetime Big Crunch may occur.

Scalar field in Reissner–Nordström spacetime: Bound state and scattering state (with appendix on eliminating oscillation in partial sum approximation of periodic function)

Highlights: • Bound-state and scattering-state solutions of massive scalar fields in R-N spacetime. • Bound-state wave functions and eigenvalues of massive scalar fields in R-N spacetime. • Solving explicit expressions of scattering phase shifts by integral equation methods. • Introducing tortoise coordinates for R-N spacetime. • Eliminating oscillations in the partial sum approximation of periodic functions. In this paper, we solve the massive scalar field in the Reissner–Nordström spacetime. The scalar field in the Reissner–Nordström spacetime has both bound states and scattering states. For bound states, we solve the bound-state wave function and the eigenvalue spectrum. For scattering states, we solve the scattering wave function and give an explicit expression for scattering phase shift by the integral equation method. Especially, we introduce the tortoise coordinate for the Reissner–Nordström spacetime. Moreover, in the calculation of scattering cross sections, we encounter a difficulty in partial sum approximation. If the sum of partial waves cannot be performed exactly, one has to turn to the partial sum approximation which approximates a function by the first several terms of the series. However, in the partial sum approximation there exists an incorrect oscillation which cannot be eliminated by keeping more terms. In the appendix we suggest an approach for eliminating such oscillations in the partial sum.
