Bonner Durchmusterung (Argelander 1859-1862): Documentation for the machine-readable version

The machine-readable version of the catalog, as it is currently being distributed from the Astronomical Data Center, is described. The entire Bonner Durchmusterung (BD) was computerized through the collaborative efforts of the Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg, l'Observatoire de Nice, and the Astronomical Data Center at the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center. All corrigenda published in the original BD volumes were incorporated into the machine file, along with changes published following the 1903 edition. In addition, stars indicated to be missing in published lists and verified by various techniques are flagged so that they can be omitted from computer plotted charts if desired. Stars deleted in the various errata lists were similarly flagged, while those with revised data are flagged and listed in a separate table.

Materials and processes laboratory composite materials characterization task, part 1. Damage tolerance

A test run was performed on IM6/3501-6 carbon-epoxy in which the material was processed, machined into specimens, and tested for damage tolerance capabilities. Nondestructive test data played a major role in this element of composite characterization. A time chart was produced showing the time the composite material spent within each Branch or Division in order to identify those areas which produce a long turnaround time. Instrumented drop weight testing was performed on the specimens with nondestructive evaluation being performed before and after the impacts. Destructive testing in the form of cross-sectional photomicrography and compression-after-impact testing were used. Results show that the processing and machining steps needed to be performed more rapidly if data on composite material is to be collected within a reasonable timeframe. The results of the damage tolerance testing showed that IM6/3501-6 is a brittle material that is very susceptible to impact damage.

Echo size and asymmetry - Impact on NEXRAD storm identification

The effects of echo shape and radar viewing angle on detecting small thunderstorms with the NEXRAD storm identification algorithms are examined. The amorphous low-level echo shapes are modeled as ellipses with major axes ranging from 5-15 km and minor axes varying between 2-5 km. The model echoes are then used to create a 'probability of detection' chart that demonstrates the impact of storm asymmetry on cell identification. The algorithm performance on small thunderstorms observed near Huntsville, Alabama and Kennedy Space Center, Florida is examined. A new algorithm based on the analysis of 15 storms observed in Florida, Alabama, and New Mexico is proposed that would identify storms as having lightning if 40 dBZ reflectivity is present at the -10 C level and the echo top exceeds 9 km. This algorithm would have a 100 percent probability of detecting lightning producing storms 4-33 min before the first flash, a 7 percent false alarm rate and a critical success index of 93 percent.

Design and spacecraft-integration of RTGs for solar probe

The design, analysis, and spacecraft integration of radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTG) to power the Solar Probe under study at NASA JPL is described. The mission of the Solar Probe is to explore the solar corona by performing in situ measurements at up to four solar radii to the sun. Design constraints for the RTG are discussed. The chief challenge in the design and system integration of the Solar Probe's RTG is a heat rejection problem. Two RTG orientations, horizontal and oblique, are analyzed for effectiveness and results are summarized in chart form. A number of cooling strategies are also investigated, including heat-pipe and reflector-cooled options. A methodology and general computer code are presented for analyzing the performance of arbitrarily obstructed RTGs with both axial and circumferential temperature, voltage, and current variation. This methodology is applied to the specific example of the Solar Probe RTG obstructed by a semicylindrical reflector of 15-inch radius.

Mineralogical and chemical properties of the lunar regolith

The composition of lunar regolith and its attendant properties are discussed. Tables are provided listing lunar minerals, the abundance of plagioclase feldspar, pyroxene, olivine, and ilmenite in lunar materials, typical compositions of common lunar minerals, and cumulative grain-size distribution for a large number of lunar soils. Also provided are charts on the chemistry of breccias, the chemistry of lunar glass, and the comparative chemistry of surface soils for the Apollo sites. Lunar agglutinates, constructional particles made of lithic, mineral, and glass fragments welded together by a glassy matrix containing extremely fine-grained metallic iron and formed by micrometeoric impacts at the lunar surface, are discussed. Crystalline, igneous rock fragments, breccias, and lunar glass are examined. Volatiles implanted in lunar materials and regolith maturity are also addressed.

Construction of surface pressure field from scatterometer wind field

An account of the construction of surface pressure fields from Seasat-A satellite scatterometer (SASS) winds as carried out by different methods, and the comparison of these pressure fields with those derived from in situ ship observations is presented. On the assumption that the pressure adjusts itself instantaneously to the motion field, it may be computed by various methods. One of these makes use of planetary boundary theory, and of the possible techniques in this category a two-layer iterative scheme admitting of the parametrization of diabatic and baroclinic effects and of secondary flow was chosen. A second method involves the assumption of zero two-dimensional divergence, leading to a Laplace's equation (the balance equation) in pressure, with the wind field serving as a forcing function. This method does not accommodate adiabatic or baroclinic effects, and requires a knowledge of the pressure at all boundary points. Two comparison fields are used for validation: the conventional operational analyses of the US National Meteorological Center (NMC), and the special analyses of the Gulf of Alaska Experiment (GOASEX), which were done by hand. The results of the computations were as follows: (1) The pressure fields, as computed from the SASS winds alone, closely approximated the NMC fields in regions where reasonable in situ coverage was available (typically, one or two mb differences over most of the chart, three to four mb in extreme cases); (2) In some cases the SASS-derived pressure fields displayed high-resolution phenomena not detected by the NMC fields, but evident in the GOASEX data; and, (3) As expected, the pressure fields derived from the balance equation were much smoother and less well resolved than the SASS-derived or NMC fields. The divergence as measured from the SASS winds is smaller than, but of the same order of magnitude as, the vorticity.

Reliable magnetic tape recording for real-time data acquisition systems

The design of a real-time magnetic tape I/O system using automatic error recovery and data spooling is discussed. Real time requirements (data acquired at one rate and recorded at another by queing) must be met and data integrity must be provided regardless of tape failures or I/O errors. Automatic blocking services should be used for multiple local records storage. Avoidance of operational delays and loss of data is essential, noting the problems of the tape drives of the NASA Langley cryogenic wind tunnel. A series of block diagrames and flow charts are included.

A comparison of the merits of open-back, symmetric sandwich, and contoured back mirrors as light-weighted optics

A parametric study of contoured back mirrors, symmetric sandwich mirrors, and open-back mirrors is presented. Each mirror type is examined with regard to self-weight-induced deflection, efficiency, and fabrication constraints. A chart of fabrication and mounting factors as well as stiffness and weight factors is presented for assistance in choosing an appropriate mirror type in a given application.

NASA evolution of exploration architectures

A series of charts and diagrams is used to provide a detailed overview of the evolution of NASA space exploration architectures. The pre-Apollo programs including the Werner von Braun feasibility study are discussed and the evolution of the Apollo program itself is treated in detail. The post-Apollo era is reviewed and attention is given to the resurgence of strategic planning exemplified by both ad hoc and formal efforts at planning. Results of NASA's study of the main elements of the Space Exploration Initiative which examined technical scenarios, science opportunities, required technologies, international considerations, institutional strengths and needs, and resource estimates are presented. The 90-day study concludes that, among other things, major investments in challenging technologies are required, the scientific opportunities provided by the program are considerable, current launch capabilities are inadequate, and Space Station Freedom is essential.

Structures and characteristics of commercially available 1.5 micron InGaAsP distributed feedback laser diodes

The characteristics of commercially available 1.5-micron distributed feedback (DFB) laser diodes obtained from seven manufacturers were investigated, and the results are correlated with the lasers' structural parameters. It was found that buried heterostructures with first-order gratings showed consistently good results (as opposed to buried heterostructures with second-order gratings). A ridge waveguide laser was near the bottom of most performance charts.

Time variant analysis of large scale constrained rotorcraft systems dynamics - An exploitation of IBM-3090 vector-processor's pipe-lining feature

A generalized algorithmic procedure is presented for handling the constraints in transmissions, which are treated as a multibody system of interconnected rigid/flexible bodies. The type of constraints are classified based on the interconnection of the bodies, assuming one or more points of contact to exist between them. The method is explained through flow charts and configuration/interaction tables. A significant increase in speed of execution is achieved by vectorizing the developed code in computationally intensive areas. The study of an example consisting of two meshing disks rotating at high angular velocity is carried out. The dynamic behavior of the constraint forces associated with the generalized coordinates of the system are plotted by selecting various modes. Applications are intended for the study of dynamic and subsequent prediction of constraint forces at the gear teeth contacting points in helicopter transmissions with the aim of improving performance dependability.

UBVRI photometry of stars in the fields of X-ray selected BL Lacertae objects

UBVRI photometry is presented of stars in the fields of 38 X-ray selected BL Lacertae objects, two X-ray selected AGNs, and one X-ray binary system (possibly a cataclysmic variable). These stars are suitable for use as photometric comparison stars for optical monitoring programs involving these X-ray selected objects. A total of 166 observations of 87 stars were made on seven photometric nights. At least two stars were observed in every field. UBVRI measurements of three stars were made in the fields of MS 0950.9 + 4929, MS 1552.1 + 2020, and H 2154 - 304. Four stars were measured in the field of H 1426 + 428. Finding charts for all of these objects are included.

Pluto-Charon stellar occultation candidates - 1990-1995

A search to identify stars that might be occulted by Pluto or Charon during the period 1990-1995 and part of 1996 is studied. This search was made with an unfiltered CCD camera operated in the strip scanning mode, and it reaches an R magnitude of approximately 17.5 - about 1.5 mag fainter than previous searches. Circumstances for each of the 162 potential occultations are given, including an approximate R magnitude of the star, which allows estimation of the signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) for observation of each occultation. The faintest stars in the list would yield an S/N of about 20 for a 1 s integration when observed with a CCD detector on an 8 m telescope under a dark sky. The astrometric precision (+/- 0.2 arcsec, with larger systematic errors possible for individual cases) is insufficient to serve as a final prediction for these potential occultations, but is sufficient to identify stars deserving of further, more accurate, astrometric observations. Statistically, about 32 of these events to be observable somewhere on earth are expected. The number of events actually observed will be substantially smaller because of clouds and the sparse distribution of large telescopes. Finder charts for each of the 91 stars involved are presented.
