Grain growth kinetics in liquid-phase-sintered zinc oxide-barium oxide ceramics

Grain growth of ZnO in the presence of a liquid phase of the ZnO-BaO system has been studied for temperatures from 1300 to 1400 C. The specimens were treated in boiling water and the grains were separated by dissolving the matrix phase in an ultrasonic bath. As a consequence 3D grain size measurements were possible. Microstructural examination shows some grain coalescence with a wide range of neck size ratios and corresponding dihedral angles, however, most grains are isolated. Lognormal grain size distributions show similar shapes, indicating that the growth mechanism is invariant over this time and temperature. All regressions between G exp n and time for n = 2 and 3 proved statistically significant. The rate constants calculated with the growth exponent set to n = 3 are on the same order of magnitude as in metallic systems. The apparent activation energy for growth is estimated between 355 and 458 kJ/mol.

Plasmonic Nonlinear Energy Transfer Enhanced Second Harmonic Generation Nanoscopy

Nonlinear optical response is a fingerprint of various physicochemical properties of materials related to symmetry, including crystallography, interfacial configuration, and carrier dynamics. However, the intrinsically weak nonlinear optical susceptibility and the diffraction limit of far-field optics restrict probing deep-subwavelength-scale nonlinear optics with measurable signal-to-noise ratio. Here, we propose an alternative approach toward efficient second harmonic generation (SHG) nanoscopy for SHG-active sample (zinc oxide nanowire; ZnO NW) using an SHG-active plasmonic nanotip. Our full-wave simulation suggests that the experimentally observed high near-field SHG contrast is possible when the nonlinear response of ZnO NW is enhanced and/or that of the tip is suppressed. Here, this result suggests possible evidence of quantum mechanical nonlinear energy transfer between the tip and the sample, modifying the nonlinear optical susceptibility. Further, this process probes the nanoscale corrosion of ZnO NW, demonstrating potential use in studying various physicochemical phenomena in nanoscale resolution.

High stability of flexible perovskite transparent conductive oxide film via van der Waals heteroepitaxy

Transparent conducting oxides (TCOs), such as indium-tin oxide (ITO) and indium gallium zinc oxide (IGZO), are essential components in the design of flexible optoelectronic devices. However, it is still a challenge to prepare low-cost flexible transparent conductive film for achieving the flexible functionality together with high optical transparency and electrical conductivity. Herein, fluorphlogopite (mica) is selected as the bendable and transparent substrate for the fabrication of low-cost perovskite CaVO 3 TCO epitaxial film. Benefitting from thin mica substrate with high Young’s modulus of 200 GPa, flexible CaVO 3 TCO epitaxial film exhibits high mechanical stability in terms of electrical conductivity and optical transparency after bending up to 10 5 cycles. The change of resistance can reflect the bending curvature and strain state. Finally, our results provide a new pathway to design superior mechanical flexibility and stability CaVO 3 TCO films for application in flexible, light-weight, and portable smart optoelectronic devices.

Classification of Semiconductors Using Photoluminescence Spectroscopy and Machine Learning

Photoluminescence spectroscopy is a nondestructive optical method that is widely used to characterize semiconductors. In the photoluminescence process, a substance absorbs photons and emits light with longer wavelengths via electronic transitions. This paper discusses a method for identifying substances from their photoluminescence spectra using machine learning, a technique that is efficient in making classifications. Neural networks were constructed by taking simulated photoluminescence spectra as the input and the identity of the substance as the output. Here, six different semiconductors were chosen as categories: gallium oxide (Ga 2 O 3 ), zinc oxide (ZnO), gallium nitride (GaN), cadmium sulfide (CdS), tungsten disulfide (WS 2 ), and cesium lead bromide (CsPbBr 3 ). The developed algorithm has a high accuracy (>90%) for assigning a substance to one of these six categories from its photoluminescence spectrum and correctly identified a mixed Ga 2 O 3 /ZnO sample.

Controlled Fabrication of Quality ZnO NWs/CNTs and ZnO NWs/Gr Heterostructures via Direct Two-Step CVD Method

A novel and advanced approach of growing zinc oxide nanowires (ZnO NWs) directly on single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) and graphene (Gr) surfaces has been demonstrated through the successful formation of 1D–1D and 1D–2D heterostructure interfaces. The direct two-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method was utilized to ensure high-quality materials’ synthesis and scalable production of different architectures. Iron-based universal compound molecular ink was used as a catalyst in both processes (a) to form a monolayer of horizontally defined networks of SWCNTs interfaced with vertically oriented ZnO NWs and (b) to grow densely packed ZnO NWs directly on a graphene surface. We show here that our universal compound molecular ink is efficient and selective in the direct synthesis of ZnO NWs/CNTs and ZnO NWs/Gr heterostructures. Heterostructures were also selectively patterned through different fabrication techniques and grown in predefined locations, demonstrating an ability to control materials’ placement and morphology. Several characterization tools were employed to interrogate the prepared heterostructures. ZnO NWs were shown to grow uniformly over the network of SWCNTs, and much denser packed vertically oriented ZnO NWs were produced on graphene thin films. Such heterostructures can be used widely in many potential applications, such as photocatalysts, supercapacitors, solar cells, piezoelectric or thermal actuators, as well as chemical or biological sensors.

Defective Sn-Zn perovskites through bio-directed routes for modulating CO 2 RR

Sn and Zn oxides can catalyze electrochemical CO 2 reduction reactions (CO 2 RR) to produce useful chemicals. Herein, we report on perovskite-type tin-zinc oxides (TZO) synthesized by a biomineralization approach under benign aqueous conditions. The resulting TZO catalysts are disordered and possess a high quantity of defects, which serve as highly reactive active sites in CO 2 RR. Selectively toward formate or CO is tunable toward the relative amounts of Sn and Zn and their associated O defects. In-situ X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements reveal electronic and structural transformations consistent with oxygen vacancy formation at Sn-O-Zn bridges as a function of cathodic potential that strongly correlates to CO2RR selectivity. Further, Density functional theory (DFT) calculations demonstrate that introducing an oxygen vacancy in TZO influences drastically influences formate/CO selectivity, consistent with our in-situ XAS findings and catalytic performance. Overall, these findings demonstrate the potential of biomineralization to fabricate perovskite-type metal oxides for energy conversion reactions.

Electroactive ZnO: Mechanisms, Conductivity, and Advances in Zn Alkaline Battery Cycling

Zinc oxide is of great interest for advanced energy devices because of its low cost, wide direct bandgap, non-toxicity, and facile electrochemistry. In zinc alkaline batteries, ZnO plays a critical role in electrode passivation, a process that hinders commercialization and remains poorly understood. Here, novel observations of an electroactive type of ZnO formed in Zn-metal alkaline electrodes are disclosed. The electrical conductivity of battery-formed ZnO is measured and found to vary by factors of up to 10 4 , which provides a first-principles-based understanding of Zn passivation in industrial alkaline batteries. Simultaneous with this conductivity change, protons are inserted into the crystal structure and electrons are inserted into the conduction band in quantities up to ≈10 20 cm –3 and ≈1 mAh gZnO –1 . Electron insertion causes blue electrochromic coloration with efficiencies and rates competitive with leading electrochromic materials. The electroactivity of ZnO is evidently enabled by rapid crystal growth, which forms defects that complex with inserted cations, charge-balanced by the increase of conduction band electrons. Furthermore, this property distinguishes electroactive ZnO from inactive classical ZnO. Knowledge of this phenomenon is applied to improve cycling performance of industrial-design electrodes at 50% zinc utilization and the authors propose other uses for ZnO such as electrochromic devices.

In Situ Growth and Interlayer Modulation of Layered Double Hydroxide Thin Films from a Transparent Conducting Oxide Precursor

Layered double hydroxides (LDHs) are a class of cationic-layered solids that can be synthetically designed for a variety of advanced functions. Facile thin film growth of LDHs is an important requisite for a variety of applications including functional coatings, displays, and sensing. In this work we demonstrate, for the first time, an in-situ and patternable thin film synthesis of interconnected Zn-Cr LDH particles from a transparent conducting oxide (TCO) precursor, aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO), at room temperature within minutes. Synthetic parameters such as chromium (III) nitrate concentration, solvent composition, and reaction time were found to significantly affect the thickness and morphology of the resulting LDH films. These LDH thin films can undergo interlayer anion exchange, which modulates the interlayer distance of the LDH sheets and surface energy of the thin film. Replacement of the interlayer anion with perfluorooctanoate increases the interlayer sheet distance from 0.9 nm to 2.8 nm and induces a super-hydrophobic thin film that is capable of adsolubilizing and retaining organic guest molecules. The synthetic method and structural analysis of the LDH thin films introduced in this work opens new avenues of application for LDH films.
