Atomic Data for the K-vacancy States of Fe XXIV

As part of a project to compute improved atomic data for the spectral modeling of iron K lines, we report extensive calculations and comparisons of atomic data for K-vacancy states in Fe XXIV. The data sets include: (i) energy levels, line wavelengths, radiative and Auger rates; (ii) inner-shell electron impact excitation rates and (iii) fine structure inner-shell photoionization cross sections. The calculations of energy levels and radiative and Auger rates have involved a detailed study of orbital representations, core relaxation, configuration interaction, relativistic corrections, cancellation effects and semi-empirical corrections. It is shown that a formal treatment of the Breit interaction is essential to render the important magnetic correlations that take part in the decay pathways of this ion. As a result, the accuracy of the present A-values is firmly ranked at better than 10% while that of the Auger rates at only 15%. The calculations of collisional excitation and photoionization cross sections take into account the effects of radiation and spectator Auger dampings. In the former, these effects cause significant attenuation of resonances leading to a good agreement with a simpler method where resonances are excluded. In the latter, resonances converging to the K threshold display symmetric profiles of constant width that causes edge smearing.

Wide-Field Imaging Using Nitrogen Vacancies

Nitrogen vacancies in bulk diamonds and nanodiamonds can be used to sense temperature, pressure, electromagnetic fields, and pH. Unfortunately, conventional sensing techniques use gated detection and confocal imaging, limiting the measurement sensitivity and precluding wide-field imaging. Conversely, the present sensing techniques do not require gated detection or confocal imaging and can therefore be used to image temperature, pressure, electromagnetic fields, and pH over wide fields of view. In some cases, wide-field imaging supports spatial localization of the NVs to precisions at or below the diffraction limit. Moreover, the measurement range can extend over extremely wide dynamic range at very high sensitivity.

Probing the Impact of Vacancy Diffusion on Void Dynamics at the Lithium Metal–Solid Electrolyte Interface

Lithium (Li) metal-based solid-state batteries (SSBs) are considered promising candidates for next-generation energy storage due to their superior energy density and enhanced safety compared to conventional Li-ion systems. However, their practical application is limited by challenges such as void formation at the Li-solid electrolyte (SE) interface, which disrupts ion transport and accelerates interfacial degradation. This work investigates how the coupled effects of electro-dissolution kinetics and surface diffusion at the Li metal surface govern the evolution of interfacial morphology during stripping. This work examines the influence of three distinct surface diffusion modes, which are terrace diffusion, step diffusion, and interlayer diffusion, on maintaining interfacial stability. In addition, how the dominant surface diffusion mechanism can overcome the contact loss due to high reaction kinetics is explored. Furthermore, the roughness of the Li metal anode surface is quantified, and the influence of different diffusion mechanisms on the evolution of the dynamic solid–solid interface is examined. The critical role of temperature in enhancing Li surface diffusivity and expanding the regime of stable contact is highlighted. By identifying distinct regimes of interface stability, this study analyzes how non-uniform electrochemical dynamics dictate void morphology evolution and interfacial contact. These insights offer guiding principles for engineering robust Li–SE interfaces in SSBs.

Improved thermoelectric performance of α- and β- Cu 2 Se through suppression of hole density using extrinsic copper vacancies

Modulating Cu + ion disorder in Cu 2 Se can enable control over the polymorphism and the carrier density leading to enhanced thermoelectric properties for both α- and β-Cu 2 Se. Here we report that the incorporation of Cr 3+ into the Cu 2 Se crystal lattice facilitates the stabilization of α-Cu 2 Se at 300 K leading to a large (~140%) reduction in the carrier density both below and above the phase transition. This is attributed to the reduction in the density of intrinsic copper interstitials (Cu$^{•}_{i}$) within the Cu (2-δ-λ) (Cr$^{··}_{Cu}$)λ(V$^{'}_{Cu}$)δ(Cu$^{π}_{i}$) δ-2λ (h • ) δ-2λ Se crystal lattice. Such optimization of the carrier density led to a large (63%) increase in the thermopower and a drastic (46%) reduction in the total thermal conductivity for both α- and β-Cu 2 Se matrices. Consequently, a significant enhancement of the thermoelectric performance is observed in the entire temperature range from 300 K to 773 K. This results in high average ZT values for both α-Cu 2 Se (ZT ave = 0.60) and β-Cu 2 Se (ZT ave = 0.97), which paves the way for both near room temperature and high temperatures applications. Furthermore, this work provides a new approach to optimize the thermoelectric performance of Cu 2 Se-based materials by leveraging the interaction between mobile intrinsic Cu$^{·}_{i}$ and extrinsic V$^{'}_{Cu}$ to suppress the hole density.

Reactivity of Sulfur Vacancy-Rich MoS 2 to Water Dissociation

Exposed Mo atoms on the surface of MoS 2 can catalyze certain useful chemical reactions, including the dissociation of water to produce hydrogen. However, a comprehensive understanding of water reactivity on defective MoS 2 surfaces remains elusive. Here, we use in situ near ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) to investigate water dissociation reactions on MoS 2 surfaces before and after Ar + ion beam bombardment. To make the surfaces reactive, we treated them with Ar + ion beam sputtering first, which created exposed Mo sites. Using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) and density of states calculations conducted using density functional theory (DFT), we verified that stripping the surface of sulfur atoms creates metallic surface states that can catalyze water dissociation. At elevated H 2 O pressures, XPS measurements combined with DFT calculations suggested the presence of four distinct surface species from dissociated water. Specifically, we found that oxides and hydroxides are prominent at the surface, while chemisorbed and physisorbed H 2 O molecules are also present. In conclusion, this study provides new insights that reveal the prospects of surface-engineered MoS 2 as a catalyst for water dissociation.

Doping with phosphorus reduces anion vacancy disorder in CdSeTe semiconductors enabling higher solar cell efficiency

Doping is used in many pn junction devices, such as polycrystalline solar cells, to increase the strength of the junction field to assist charge carrier collection and thus partially mitigate nonradiative recombination losses. We demonstrate a different doping characteristic for inorganic solar cells: using dopants to reduce charge carrier trapping and electronic band tails. Alloying CdTe with Se to form CdSeTe semiconductor reduced recombination, but CdSeTe has more complex defect states which can limit further efficiency gains due to charge carrier trapping and trap-limited mobility. Doping CdSeTe with P (but not N, As, or Sb in this study) reduces band tails (Urbach energies) and lessens the impact of the near valence band trap states, with ambipolar mobilities improving to >50 cm 2 V −1 s −1 , fill factor increasing from 76% to 79%, and efficiencies increasing by 0.9% absolute. Simulations are used to show how such defect reduction improves performance in the radiative limit.
