Phase-Field Method Tutorial Codes

This repository contains example implementations of phase-field codes primarily for educational purposes. These codes demonstrate how a simple phase-field models can be implemented as an introduction for researchers new to the area (students, new staff, collaborators from different domains, etc.). The computer code includes highly documented Jupyter notebooks that implement phase-field models and analyze the results.

Discrete Element Method Analysis for Metal Powders Used in Additive Manufacturing, and DEM Simulation Tutorial Using LIGGGHTS-PUBLIC [PowerPoint and paper]

Discrete Element Method (DEM) is a method of analysis to evaluate the dynamic interactions between granular particles. This method has been used in the pharmaceutical industry to improve the powder compaction process for tablet manufacturing. There are also applications in agriculture, food industry, and manufacturing. Direct energy deposition is an additive manufacturing technique which uses metallic powders fed through a nozzle, melted using a directed laser, and transformed into a solid object layer by layer. One way of feeding metal particles into the system involves the use of a vibrating hopper. Given a specified amplitude and frequency input, the hopper will enable the powder to travel up a path, and inject through the system with assistance from a stream of gas. The mechanical properties of a printed object can vary, depending on the characteristics of the powder flow and the particles’ as-received properties. Improved understanding of dynamic interactions of flowing powders could enable additive manufacturing components with 2D or 3D variations in mechanical properties, e.g., density. This work uses DEM simulation software to investigate the effects of particle cohesion, friction, and density on the quality of the flow by performing an angle of repose simulation, which is often used as a metric to evaluate the flowability of powders.

Preparation of Nuclear Data Libraries for Web Release [Slides] and Tutorial for Generating Correlated Random Samples and Propagation of Uncertainty [Slides]

The first presentation discuses moving distribution of nuclear data to an online platform which allows ore frequent nuclear data updates, greater ease of acquiring nuclear data, and user flexibility in what nuclear data to download. The second presentation illustrates uncertainties without correlation, uncertainties without correlation with negative samples, uncertainties with correlation, uncertainties with a χ-like constraint, uncertainties with a Σ tot -like constraint, sampling using different distributions, and dealing with negative eigenvalues in a covariance matrix.

Nek5000: improvements in the available RANS models, meshing, tutorials, and training

This year, the Nuclear Energy Advanced Modeling Simulation program (NEAMS) thermal-hydraulics report for Nek5000 NRC- and verification and validation (V&V)-driven development focuses on following areas of code application and improvement. First we have continued improvements of RANS modeling capabilities in Nek5000 including improved k-tau model focusing mostly on wallfunction initial implementation with spectral element method (SEM) and initiating investigation of an alternative approach XSEM that greatly reduces discretization errors.

Tutorial Guide: Biological Performance Assessment (BioPA) Toolset for High Head Passage

Higher head facilities that impede migratory fish use trap and transport to varying levels of success. There are ongoing efforts to improve the downstream passage. One such effort seeks to attract fish by using large flow, shedding most of the attraction flow, and routing fish downstream using minimal flows. To demonstrate BioPA is suitable for improving downstream high head fish passage, a similar type flow path will be used in this document.

SCALE Sensitivity Tutorial [Slides]

In sensitivity analysis, we seek to quantify the degree to which fundamental data (i.e., nuclear data) influence a system’s response. In uncertainty analysis, we seek to quantify the degree to which uncertainty in fundamental data contributes to uncertainty in a system’s response. In SCALE, the TSUNAMI suite provides tools for sensitivity and uncertainty analysis, similarity analysis, and nuclear data and covariance adjustment.

Beam and Spin Optics Simulation Tutorials, Using Zgoubi Exercises and Solutions 2 - RHIC Run 22 Spin Transparency Experiment

High electron and ion polarizations are paramount design requirements for the future Electron Ion Collider (EIC) at BNL. A “spin transparency” mode of operation, inherited from the “figure-8” ring design [1], allows preservation and control of electron and ion spin polarization in a collider or storage ring [2, 3]. It makes the ring lattice “invisible” to the spin and allows for polarization control by small quasi-static magnetic fields with practically no effect on beam orbital parameters. Beam polarization can then be fully controlled by small adjustments of snake axis orientation (a few degrees) and snake strengths (a few percent); polarization orientation at IPs can be controlled without spin rotators, spins can be adiabatically flipped without the need of ac magnets. The transparent spin mode has been demonstrated in simulations [2] for the purpose of being tested experimentally during RHIC Run 22. This experiment was aimed at providing data to validate the principles. Yellow RHIC ring (Fig. 1.1) was configured in the transparent spin mode by aligning the axes of its two helical snakes (located respectively in the 3 o’clock and 9 o’clock sextants) parallel to the longitudinal axis. Experiment goals and expected results, ad hoc procedures and hardware requirements, are addressed in Refs. [2, 3].
