Polarization control in spin-transparent hadron colliders by weak-field navigators involving lattice enhancement effect

Hadron polarization control schemes for Spin Transparent (ST) synchrotrons are analyzed. The spin dynamics and beam polarization in such synchrotrons are controlled by spin navigators (SN) which are special small insertions of weak magnetic fields. An SN stabilizes the beam polarization and allows for setting any desirable spin orientation at an interaction point in the operational regime, including a frequent spin flip. We present a general approach to design of SNs. We distinguish different types of SNs, namely, those not causing closed orbit perturbation as well as those producing local and global orbit distortions. In the second case, the concept of the spin response function in an ST synchrotron is applied and expanded to reveal the effect of the SN strength enhancement by magnetic lattice of the synchrotron. We provide conceptual schemes for SN designs using longitudinal and transverse magnetic fields allowing for polarization control at low as well as high energies. We also develop the ST concept for ultra-high energies. This development may enable and stimulate interest in polarized beam experiments in possible polarized collider projects such as Large Hadron Collider (LHC), Future Circular Collider (FCC) and Super Proton Proton Collider (SPPC).

Material jet printing of transparent ceramic Yb:YAG planar waveguides

A new, to the best of our knowledge, 3D additive manufacturing technique utilizing particle-loaded ink jet printing to fabricate transparent ceramic Yb:YAG planar waveguides for laser gain media was demonstrated. Rheological optimization of YAG particle-loaded inks resulted in successful droplet formation and printing resolution. Planar waveguides composed of a Yb:YAG guide encased in undoped YAG cladding were printed with guide thicknesses ranging between 25 and 350 µm and consolidated to high optical quality via solid-state sintering. Sufficiently low optical (1–3%/cm) and intermodal scatter allowed single-mode propagation with a core/clad index difference of Δ<!-- Δ --> n ∼<!-- ~ --> 5.0 ×<!-- × --> 10 −<!-- - --> 4 (corresponding to 3 at.% Yb). The waveguides were cladding-pumped longitudinally with a 940 nm diode array resulting in 23.6% slope efficiency in 2 ms pulsed operation.

Ink-sprayed transparent ceramic multilayer planar waveguides for ribbon lasers

Multilayer transparent ceramic planar waveguides were fabricated using a newly developed particle-loaded ink spraying method, characterized, and lased. Waveguides with five Yb:YAG gain regions and four Lu:YAG index-matched regions were produced for application as a “ribbon laser,” as well as a homogeneous Yb:YAG waveguide. Elemental mapping revealed that the waveguide thicknesses varied from 40 to 69 μm, comprised of layers of less than 10 µm. The Yb concentration profiles were fit to a diffusion profile. The homogeneous and multilayer waveguides were tested in a laser cavity and produced similar slope efficiencies, with a maximum of 31% achieved. In conclusion, their beam profiles provided evidence of the ribbon structure affecting the preferred mode.

Additively manufactured transparent ceramic thin disk gain medium

A novel type of Yb:YAG transparent ceramic thin disk laser amplifier is demonstrated, based on fabricating a composite gain element with a paraboloidal interface between gain and no-gain regions and employing side-pumping of the thin disk. The pump-induced gain and the impact of amplified spontaneous emission on the achievable inversion are reported.

Phase-field-guided design of record-high piezoelectricity and discovery of simultaneous high light transparency and high piezoelectricity in relaxor ferroelectrics

Here, the phase-field method has been extensively applied to predicting the domain structures and their responses to external fields and understanding experimentally observed domain states under different electromechanical conditions in ferroelectric heterostructures. This article highlights the successful examples of phase-field applications in guiding the design of relaxor ferroelectric ceramics and crystals with record-high piezoelectricity and the discovery of simultaneous high light transparency and piezoelectricity of relaxor ferroelectric crystals for a wide range of biomedical, robotics, and optoelectronics applications.

Measuring the Electric Dipole Moment of the Electron in a Two-Energy Spin-Transparent Storage Ring

We will present a new design of a two-energy storage ring for low energy (0.2 to 2 MeV) polarized electron bunches [1]. The new design is based on the transparent spin methodology that cancels the spin precession due to the magnetic dipole moment at any energy while allowing for spin precession induced by the fundamental physics of interest to accumulate. The buildup of the vertical component of beam polarization can be measured using standard Mott polarimetry that is optimal at low electron energy. These rings can be used to measure the permanent electric dipole moment of the electron, relevant to CP violation and matter-antimatter asymmetry in the universe, and to search for dark energy and ultra-light dark matter.

Towards a Deeper Understanding of Automation Transparency in the Operation of Nuclear Plants

Automation technologies have the potential to reduce operations and maintenance costs, ensure reliable power generation and safety, and thereby contribute to extending the lifespan of nuclear power plants. To fulfill this aspiration, automation behaviors have to be understandable and predictable to human operators and traceable for license holders and regulators in the event of automation failures. The current report investigates how automation transparency as a systems design principle can keep operators sufficiently informed about the inner workings of automation or make fail-safe automation run invisibly in the background to free up operator capacity.

Color Transparency and Light-Front Holographic QCD

Color transparency, the reduction of initial-state or final-state interactions in coherent nuclear processes, is a natural prediction of QCD (quantum chromodynamics) provided that small-sized or point-like configurations (PLCs) are formed in high-momentum transfer, high-energy, semi-exclusive processes. I use the Frankfurt-Miller-Strikman criteria for the existence of PLCs to show that the wave functions of light-front holographic QCD, as currently formulated, do not contain a PLC.

Experimental Study of a Novel Semi-Transparent Bi-Facial Agri-Voltaic System: Initial Results

Solar (photovoltaic)-agriculture practices have experienced notable progress across several countries over the past few decades, creating a field widely known as agrivoltaics. This co-location practice has proved effective for certain crops that prefer partial shade like tomatoes, lettuce, and peppers, although it is less effective for crops needing more sun. Availability of natural sunlight with a specific spectral signature is necessary for agricultural practices as many plant species require an optimum-level and quality of sunlight for photosynthesis. The goal of this work is to model and validate ground-level irradiance for a semi-transparent bifacial solar collector equipped with a custom spectral reflector. By introducing intentional gaps between opaque solar cells, we hope to allow 50% of visible light to pass through the module. Additionally, this technology could reduce the soil temperature by 2° C, improve moisture retention, and enhance yield by providing partial solar radiation. In our model, we can calculate the total solar irradiance for the plants as a function of the cell distribution, material absorption, height of the panel and time of year with a spatial resolution of 0.0625 m2. When comparing theoretical estimates to experimental measurements of photosynthetically active radiation (PAR), we find a discrepancy of 32-48%, and a discrepancy of 19-38% after correction with TMY data.

Misfit p-type transparent conductive oxide (TCO) films, methods and applications

A p-type transparent conductive oxide (TCO) mixed metal oxide material layer formed upon a substrate has a formula M1xM2yOz generally, CaxCoyOz more specifically, and Ca3Co4O9 most specifically. Embodiments provide that the p-type TCO mixed metal oxide material may be formed absent an epitaxial crystalline relationship with respect to the substrate while using a sol-gel synthesis method that uses a chelating polymer material and not a block copolymer material.

Evaluating Interconnection Schemes for Semi-Transparent Perovskite Mini-Modules

This work evaluates the critical issues surrounding P1, P2, and P3 scribing for semi-transparent perovskite module integration. We find that P1 scribing procedures are well-translated from other thin-film technologies. P2 scribing is best performed with a mechanical scribe, but remains a source of series resistance. P3 scribing is found to cause an increase in scribing dead area and a potential degradation source.
