Passive Islanding Detection of Inverter-Based Resources in a Noisy Environment

Islanding occurs when a load is energized solely by local generators and can result in frequency and voltage instability, changes in current, and poor power quality. Poor power quality can interrupt industrial operations, damage sensitive electrical equipment, and induce outages upon the resynchronization of the island with the grid. This study proposes an islanding detection method employing a Duffing oscillator to analyze voltage fluctuations at the point of common coupling (PCC) under a high-noise environment. Unlike existing methods, which overlook the noise effect, this paper mitigates noise impact on islanding detection. Power system noise in PCC measurements arises from switching transients, harmonics, grounding issues, voltage sags and swells, electromagnetic interference, and power quality issues that affect islanding detection. Transient events like lightning-induced traveling waves to the PCC can also introduce noise levels exceeding the voltage amplitude by more than seven times, thus disturbing conventional detection techniques. The noise interferes with measurements and increases the nondetection zone (NDZ), causing failed or delayed islanding detection. The Duffing oscillator nonlinear dynamics enable detection capabilities at a high noise level. The proposed method is designed to detect the PCC voltage fluctuations based on the IEEE standard 1547 through the Duffing oscillator. For the voltages beyond the threshold, the Duffing oscillator phase trajectory changes from periodic to chaotic mode and sends an islanded operation command to the inverter. The proposed islanding detection method distinguishes switching transients and faults from an islanded operation. Experimental validation of the method is conducted using a 3.6 kW PV setup.

I Spy Transits and Pulsations: Empirical Variability in White Dwarfs Using Gaia and the Zwicky Transient Facility

We present a novel method to detect variable astrophysical objects and transient phenomena using anomalous excess scatter in repeated measurements from public catalogs of Gaia DR2 and Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) DR3 photometry. We first provide a generalized, all-sky proxy for variability using only Gaia DR2 photometry, calibrated to white dwarf stars. To ensure more robust candidate detection, we further employ a method combining Gaia with ZTF photometry and alerts. To demonstrate its efficacy, we apply this latter technique to a sample of roughly 12,100 white dwarfs within 200 pc centered on the ZZ Ceti instability strip, where hydrogen-atmosphere white dwarfs are known to pulsate. Here, by inspecting the top 1% of the samples ranked by these methods, we demonstrate that both the Gaia-only and ZTF-informed techniques are highly effective at identifying known and new variable white dwarfs, which we verify using follow-up, high-speed photometry. We confirm variability in all 33 out of 33 (100%) observed white dwarfs within our top 1% highest-ranked candidates, both inside and outside the ZZ Ceti instability strip. In addition to dozens of new pulsating white dwarfs, we also identify five white dwarfs highly likely to show transiting planetary debris; if confirmed, these systems would more than triple the number of white dwarfs known to host transiting debris.

SNAD transient miner: Finding missed transient events in ZTF DR4 using k-D trees

Here we report the automatic detection of 11 transients (7 possible supernovae and 4 active galactic nuclei candidates) within the Zwicky Transient Facility fourth data release (ZTF DR4), all of them observed in 2018 and absent from public catalogs. Among these, three were not part of the ZTF alert stream. Our transient mining strategy employs 41 physically motivated features extracted from both real light curves and four simulated light curve models (SN Ia, SN II, TDE, SLSN-I). These features are input to a k-D tree algorithm, from which we calculate the 15 nearest neighbors. After pre-processing and selection cuts, our dataset contained approximately a million objects among which we visually inspected the 105 closest neighbors from seven of our brightest, most well-sampled simulations, comprising 89 unique ZTF DR4 sources. Our result illustrates the potential of coherently incorporating domain knowledge and automatic learning algorithms, which is one of the guiding principles directing the SNAD team. It also demonstrates that the ZTF DR is a suitable testing ground for data mining algorithms aiming to prepare for the next generation of astronomical data.

Degradation-related defect level in weathered silicon heterojunction modules characterized by deep level transient spectroscopy

Commercial silicon heterojunction photovoltaic modules, known as amorphous-silicon-based heterojunction with intrinsic thin-film layer (HIT) modules, show average degradation after 10 years in the field. HIT modules weathered outdoors in Colorado and Florida display mostly uniform decreases in intensity when mapped with photoluminescence (PL) imaging compared to a control module. Flash-table-based current-voltage curves show that degradation is dominated by voltage loss. Samples are cored from each of the modules, and deep level transient spectroscopy (DLTS) detects three electron-trap defect states in all modules with activation energies of electron emission from the defects of 0.07, 0.16, and 0.50 eV. DLTS measurements on the weathered modules show an additional deep-level, electron-trap defect state with an activation energy of 0.51 eV and a trap density of approximately 10 12 cm –3 . The capture rate is measured using varying short filling pulse times, and the resulting capture cross section is estimated to be 1.1x10 –16 cm 2 . The development of the weathering-related defect level correlates to decreases in carrier lifetime, PL intensity, and module voltage. Various depths of the space charge region are probed with increments in applied reverse bias and filling-pulse bias. Furthermore, this DLTS depth profiling shows a trend of trap density increasing with less applied reverse bias, suggesting that the weathering-related defect increases carrier recombination toward the interface between the bulk silicon wafer and the junction-forming amorphous-silicon passivation layers.

Detection of a fast, intense and unusual gamma ray transient

An unusual transient pulse of approximately 50 keV was detected by the gamma-ray burst sensor network using nine space probes and satellites. Its characteristics are unlike those of the known variety of gamma-ray bursts and therefore suggest that it was formed either by a completely different origin species or in a very different manner. It is identified with the LMC supernova remnant N49.

Secured fault detection in a power substation

Systems and methods for fault detection and protection in electric power systems that evaluates electromagnetic transients caused by faults. A fault can be detected using sampled data from a first monitored point in the power system. Detection of fault transients and associated characteristics, including transient direction, can also be extracted through evaluation of sample data from other monitored points in the power system. A monitoring device can evaluate whether to trip a switching device in response to the detection of the fault and based on confirmation of an indication of detection of fault transients at the other monitored points of the power system. The determination of whether to trip or activate the switching device can also be based on other factors, including the timing of receipt of an indication of the detection of the fault transients and/or an evaluation of the characteristics of the detected transients.

High Time Resolution Modelled and Measured New Particle Formation Rates During the 2023 Pittsburgh, PA Campaign

Particle size distributions are used to calculate nucleation rates during new particle formation (NPF). However, the low time resolution and poor sensitivity of instruments deployed to observe particle size distributions can lead to inaccurate estimates of nucleation rates. We calculated nucleation rates in Pittsburgh, PA from particle size distributions measured with the new high time resolution Condensation Particle Counters For Atmospheric Rapid Measurements (CPC FARM) and from gas precursor concentrations measured with a chemical ionization mass spectrometer. The CPC FARM nucleation rates were calculated by examining the appearance rate of particles in the smallest size bin at 1.6 nm. The nucleation rate of 1.6 nm determined every second resulted in positive and negative rates, indicating the influence of inhomogeneous mixing and advection of precursor gases and clusters. These effects are not currently considered when estimating nucleation rates from measurements. The nucleation rates from the CPC FARM were compared to the nucleation rates determined from a transient acid‐base reaction model using measured sulfuric acid concentration, strong base concentrations, and CPC detection efficiencies. The transient form of the model allowed the advection of heterogeneously mixed precursors to influence the nucleation rate. Good agreement between particle and gas‐based nucleation rates is observed during sulfuric acid‐driven NPF events. This study demonstrates that high time resolution measurements of short‐lived and rapidly formed particles are needed to accurately capture nucleation rates, which are likely influenced by advection of nucleation precursors and clusters in heterogeneous environments such as urban areas.

Fault-tolerant grid frequency measurement algorithm during transients

Many critical electric grid operations rely on accurate grid frequency measurements. Unfortunately, the measurement accuracy can be easily undermined by power system transient faults. During a power system transient fault, the power grid voltages and currents are usually highly distorted by high-frequency components. What is worse, the power grid signals could have discontinuity during some system transient faults such as phase angle jump, and the discontinuity could result in large measurement errors to state-of-the-art grid measurement algorithms. In this study, a fault-tolerant grid frequency measurement algorithm during transients is proposed. The new algorithm consists of two stages. The first stage is a transient detector, and it can detect the occurrence of system transient faults instantaneously. The second stage is the intelligent frequency estimator, and it will adapt its measurements according to the transient detector. The performance of the algorithm is evaluated under different steady-state and transient conditions. Both dependability and security of the fault-tolerant algorithm are assessed by using PSCAD simulation data and IEEE Standard test data.

Peculiar Behaviors of Faint Galactic Bulge Transients

The Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer PCA scans of the Galactic bulge (galactic longitude plus or minus 11 degrees) have detected 8 recent transients which have peak intensities of 10 to 400 mCrab. Some of the transient events have a fast rise and slow decay typical of accretion disk instabilities. It is common for these decays to be oscillatory, rather than steady, as if there are waves within the disk. There are also outbursts with symmetric light curves. In particular, the source in Terzan 2 which had a very long (decade) doubling of intensity peaking near the beginning of 1997, in 2004 has had two 30 day brightenings by a factor of 5 only 100 days apart. During each of these a burst was observed in snapshot observations near the peak. The source SLX 1735-269, also a burster, though not in our observations, has had irregularly repeated occurrences of fast swings between close to zero and 2-4 times normal. Some examples, such as the increase, drop, and slow recovery of GS 1826-238 suggest a change in the accretion disk such as emptying and refilling or a peculiar alignment. Follow up observations have provided deeper information about these transient sources and possible explanations for their behavior will be addressed.

M.I.T. studies of transient X-ray phenomena

A variety of transient X-ray phenomena have been studied. Data from the OSO-7 satellite reveal both long and short time-scale transients. Extensive observations have been made of the Lupus X-ray Nova (3U1543-47) and GX339-4(MX 1658-48) which may represent a very different type of transient source. A unique, intense X-ray flare lasting ten minutes was also recorded, and the X-ray emission from the active galaxy Cen A was found to vary significantly over a period of several days. In a recent balloon flight the Crab pulsar, NP0532, was observed to exhibit a transient pulsed component distinct from the usual main pulse and interpulse. A sounding-rocket experiment detected an ultrasoft transient X-ray source tentatively associated with SS Cygni, and preliminary results from SAS-3 show a very hard spectrum for the new source A0535 + 26. On the other hand, extensive OSO-7 null observations of both Type I and II supernovae and of the flaring radio star Algol make it unlikely that these types of objects are potent transient X-ray emitters.

Deep optical and radio searches for a quiescent counterpart to the optical transient source OTS 1809+31

Hudec (1987) has reported the detection of three bright transient optical images from the same celestial location localized to alpha(1950) = 18 h 9 m 26.29 s + or - 0.03 s, delta (1950) = +31 deg 23 arcmin 19.7 arcsec + or - 0.6 arcsec. This paper reports the result of a deep CCD search in four colors undertaken to find the quiescent counterpart of the optical transients. No source is found at the location of the transients to m(B) = 24.5; however, 18 objects in the vicinity of the reported coordinates which are consistent with the source having a proper motion of 1 arcsec/yr. A search at 6 cm with the VLA revealed no source in the mu less than 1 arcsec/yr circle to a 3 sigma limiting flux of 83 micro-Jy.

XTE J1550-564; GRB 990123

The x-ray transient XTE Jl550-564 (IAUC 7008) was detected in Burst and Transient Source Experiment (BATSE) data beginning on Jan. 21. As of Jan. 23. the one-day averaged flux was 300 mCrab (+/- 20 percent, 20-100 keV), with a hard spectrum (power-law photon-number index -2.3 +/- 0.2). This is a reflare in hard x-rays, following the primary outburst in 1998 Sept.-Oct. (IAUC 7010). The source has been active in soft x-rays (2-12 keV) since about Dec. 18, according to observations by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer ASM.

Detection of X-Ray Pulsations from the Be/X-Ray Transient A 0535+26 During a Disc Loss Phase of the Primary

Using the RossiXTE experiment, we detect weak X-ray emission from the recurrent Be/X-ray transient A 0535+26 at a time when the optical counterpart V725 Tau displayed H.alpha in absorption, indicating the absence of a circumstellar disc. The X-ray radiation is strongly modulated at the 103.5-s pulse period of the neutron star, confirming that it originates from A 0535+26. The source is weaker than in previous quiescence detections by two orders of magnitude and should be in the centrifugal inhibition regime. We show that the X-ray luminosity cannot be due to accretion on to the magnetosphere of the neutron star. Therefore this detection represents a new state of the accreting pulsar. We speculate that the X-ray emission can be due to some matter leaking through the magnetospheric barrier or thermal radiation from the neutron star surface due to crustal heating. The detection of the X-ray source in the inhibition regime implies a reduced density in the outflow from the Be companion during its disc-less phase.

Current status of the Explosive Transient Camera

The current configuration and performance of the Explosive Transient Camera (ETC), a wide-field sky monitor capable of detecting short-timescale optical transients, are briefly reviewed, as are plans for future improvements. The primary objective of the ETC is to detect an optical transient that is spatially and temporally coincident with a gamma-ray burster. However, the ETC is sensitive to all sources of short-timescale optical transients and will conduct a systematic survey of the night sky for all optical transients. Results of preliminary observations of the night sky conducted since January 1991 are summarized, and long-term variability searches with the ETC are discussed.

Surveying the MeV Gamma-Ray Sky with AMEGO-X

AbstractRecent detections of gravitational wave signals and neutrinos from gamma-ray sources have ushered in the era of multi-messenger astronomy, while highlighting the importance of gamma-ray observations for this emerging field. AMEGO-X, the All-sky Medium Energy Gamma-Ray Observatory eXplorer, is an MeV gamma-ray instrument proposed to the 2021 call for medium-sized explorer missions. AMEGO-X will survey the sky in the energy range from 100 keV to 1 GeV with unprecedented sensitivity, as well as detecting and localizing transient events such as gamma-ray bursts and magnetar activity down to 25 keV. AMEGO-X will detect gamma-ray photons both via Compton interactions and pair production processes, bridging the "sensitivity gap" between hard X-rays and high-energy gamma rays. AMEGO-X will provide important contributions to multi-messenger science and time-domain gamma-ray astronomy, studying e.g. high-redshift blazars, which are probable sources of astrophysical neutrinos, and gamma-ray bursts. I will present an overview of the instrument and anticipated science program.

Reliable cyber-threat detection in rapidly changing environments

In some embodiments, a plurality of monitoring nodes each generate a series of current monitoring node values over time that represent a current operation of the industrial asset. An attack detection computer platform may receive the series of current monitoring node values and generate a set of current feature vectors including a current feature for capturing transients (e.g., local transients and/or global transients). The attack detection computer platform may also access an attack detection model having at least one decision boundary that was created using at least one of a set of normal feature vectors and/or a set of attacked feature vectors. The attack detection model may then be executed such that an attack alert signal is transmitted by the attack detection computer platform, when appropriate, based on the set of current feature vectors (including the current feature to capture transients) and the at least one decision boundary.

Transient quasi-periodic oscillations at γ-rays in the TeV blazar PKS 1510-089

ABSTRACT We present periodicity search analyses on the γ-ray light curve of the TeV blazar PKS 1510-089 observed by the Fermi Large Area Telescope. We report the detection of two transient quasi-periodic oscillations: A 3.6-d QPO during the outburst in 2009 that lasted five cycles (MJD 54906–54923); and a periodicity of 92 d spanning over 650 d from 2018 to 2020 (MJD 58200–58850), which lasted for seven cycles. We employed the Lomb–Scargle periodogram, Weighted Wavelet Z-transform, redfit, and the Monte Carlo light-curve simulation techniques to find any periodicity and the corresponding significance. The 3.6-d QPO was detected at a moderate significance of ∼3.5σ, while the detection significance of the 92-d QPO was ∼7.0σ. We explore a few physical models for such transient QPOs including a binary black hole system, precession of the jet, a non-axisymmetric instability rotating around the central black hole near the innermost stable circular orbit, the presence of quasi-equidistant magnetic islands inside the jet, and a geometric model involving a plasma blob moving helically inside a curved jet.
