Optimal regulator or conventional? Setup techniques for a model following simulator control system

Optimal regulator technique was compared for determining simulator control system gains with the conventional servo analysis approach. Practical considerations, associated with airborne motion simulation using a model-following system, provided the basis for comparison. The simulation fidelity specifications selected were important in evaluating the relative advantages of the two methods. Frequency responses for a JetStar aircraft following a roll mode model were calculated digitally to illustrate the various cases. A technique for generating forward loop lead in the optimal regulator model-following problem was developed which increases the flexibility of that approach. It appeared to be the only way in which the optimal regulator method could meet the fidelity specifications.

NASA Electronic Library System (NELS) optimization

This is a compilation of NELS (NASA Electronic Library System) Optimization progress/problem, interim, and final reports for all phases. The NELS database was examined, particularly in the memory, disk contention, and CPU, to discover bottlenecks. Methods to increase the speed of NELS code were investigated. The tasks included restructuring the existing code to interact with others more effectively. An error reporting code to help detect and remove bugs in the NELS was added. Report writing tools were recommended to integrate with the ASV3 system. The Oracle database management system and tools were to be installed on a Sun workstation, intended for demonstration purposes.

Oil-Free Rotor Support Technologies for an Optimized Helicopter Propulsion System

An optimized rotorcraft propulsion system incorporating a foil air bearing supported Oil-Free engine coupled to a high power density gearbox using high viscosity gear oil is explored. Foil air bearings have adequate load capacity and temperature capability for the highspeed gas generator shaft of a rotorcraft engine. Managing the axial loads of the power turbine shaft (low speed spool) will likely require thrust load support from the gearbox through a suitable coupling or other design. Employing specially formulated, high viscosity gear oil for the transmission can yield significant improvements (approx. 2X) in allowable gear loading. Though a completely new propulsion system design is needed to implement such a system, improved performance is possible.

MACOS Version 3.31

Version 3.31 of Modeling and Analysis for Controlled Optical Systems (MACOS) has been released. MACOS is an easy-to-use computer program for modeling and analyzing the behaviors of a variety of optical systems, including systems that have large, segmented apertures and are aligned with the technology of wavefront sensing and control. Two previous versions were described in "Improved Software for Modeling Controlled Optical Systems" (NPO-19841) NASA Tech Briefs, Vol. 21, No. 12 (December 1997), page 42 and "Optics Program Modified for Multithreaded Parallel Computing" (NPO-40572) NASA Tech Briefs, Vol. 30, No. 1 (January 2006) page 13a. The present version incorporates the following enhancements over prior versions: a) A powerful system-optimization facility includes algorithms for linear, nonlinear, unconstrained, and constrained optimization of optical systems under a variety of settings. b) There is now enhanced capability to perturb optical components individually and on subsystem levels, and to optimize system performance by adjusting selected individual components as well as subsystems. c) Capabilities for modeling a variety of new optical aperture types have been added. d) Effects of multilayer thin-film coats on optical surfaces can now be taken into account when tracing polarized rays. e) Major software-engineering work was performed to make MACOS more reliable, flexible, and manageable for purposes of maintenance and further development.

Finite element approximation of an optimal control problem for the von Karman equations

This paper is concerned with optimal control problems for the von Karman equations with distributed controls. We first show that optimal solutions exist. We then show that Lagrange multipliers may be used to enforce the constraints and derive an optimality system from which optimal states and controls may be deduced. Finally we define finite element approximations of solutions for the optimality system and derive error estimates for the approximations.

Sensitivity of optimal control systems with bang-bang control.

The effects of small parameter variations on the performance index of optimal control systems with initial and final target manifolds, free end time, and bang-bang control are analyzed in this paper. A new approach to the sensitivity equation is presented. This approach takes into account the pulse-shaped variation produced by the parameter change on the bang-bang control. An expression, that relates the variations of the performance index, the trajectory, the final time, and the parameter, is derived. This expression extends to the class of optimal systems with bang-bang control, a result previously obtained by Courtin and Rootenberg (1971).

Biased estimation for dynamic systems.

Optimization and regulation of static and dynamic systems require good estimates of the states of the system model and the parameters of the model in the presence of input and measurement noise. A biased estimator is proposed as an alternative to the familiar best linear unbiased estimator. Depending on the value of a constant, this biased estimator can be made unbiased and is then identical to the best linear unbiased estimator, thus permitting additional freedom of choice in design and application. The sum of squared errors of this bs tmator can be less than the best linear unbiased case. An existence theorem is established and various properties are discussed.

Computerized optimal control system design for reusable and expendable boost vehicles.

An optimization technique has been developed which combines the practical features of hybrid simulation of the dynamic system under study with the systematic approach of modern control theory where a mathematically formulated design criterion is optimized by functional minimization. Standard hybrid computer optimization methods using high-speed repetitive simulations and gradient minimization schemes have been extended to obtain time-varying optimal gain schedules and reduce the sensitivity of the optimized system to parameter and disturbance uncertainties. In this approach the performance index is expressed in meaningful engineering terms that reflect the interactions among all major disciplines, structures, control/actuation system design, aerodynamics and performance. The basic optimization technique is developed and its application to current aerospace control problems including the space shuttle is presented in detail. In the discussion of the application, the controllers resulting from the technique are compared with controllers developed by conventional methods. The paper concludes with a review of the advantages and disadvantages of the technique and plans for future applications.
