Estimating an executive summary of a time series: the tendency

In this paper, we revisit the problem of decomposing a signal into a tendency and a residual. The tendency describes an executive summary of a signal that encapsulates its notable characteristics while disregarding seemingly random, less interesting aspects. Building upon the Intrinsic Time Decomposition (ITD) and information-theoretical analysis, we introduce two alternative procedures for selecting the tendency from the ITD baselines. The first is based on the maximum extrema prominence, namely the maximum difference between extrema within each baseline. Specifically this method selects the tendency as the baseline from which an ITD step would produce the largest decline of the maximum prominence. The second method uses the rotations from the ITD and selects the tendency as the last baseline for which the associated rotation is statistically stationary. We delve into a comparative analysis of the information content and interpretability of the tendencies obtained by our proposed methods and those obtained through conventional low-pass filtering schemes, particularly the Hodrik–Prescott (HP) filter. Our findings underscore a fundamental distinction in the nature and interpretability of these tendencies, highlighting their context-dependent utility with emphasis in multi-scale signals. Through a series of real-world applications, we demonstrate the computational robustness and practical utility of our proposed tendencies, emphasizing their adaptability and relevance in diverse time series contexts.

Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry: Workshop Summary

This document presents a summary of the 2023 Terrestrial Very-Long-Baseline Atom Interferometry Workshop hosted by CERN. The workshop brought together experts from around the world to discuss the exciting developments in large-scale atom interferometer (AI) prototypes and their potential for detecting ultralight dark matter and gravitational waves. The primary objective of the workshop was to lay the groundwork for an international TVLBAI proto-collaboration. This collaboration aims to unite researchers from different institutions to strategize and secure funding for terrestrial large-scale AI projects. The ultimate goal is to create a roadmap detailing the design and technology choices for one or more km-scale detectors, which will be operational in the mid-2030s. The key sections of this report present the physics case and technical challenges, together with a comprehensive overview of the discussions at the workshop together with the main conclusions.

Workshop summary: Kaons@CERN 2023

Kaon physics is at a turning point – while the rare-kaon experiments NA62 and KOTO are in full swing, the end of their lifetime is approaching and the future experimental landscape needs to be defined. With HIKE, KOTO-II and LHCb-Phase-II on the table and under scrutiny, it is a very good moment in time to take stock and contemplate about the opportunities these experiments and theoretical developments provide for particle physics in the coming decade and beyond. This paper provides a compact summary of talks and discussions from the Kaons@CERN 2023 workshop, held in September 2023 at CERN.

HERO WEC V1.0 - WEC-Sim Detailed Simulation Runs and Summary Data

Data sets from simulation runs include 144 wave cases that were run based on the WEC-Sim model (https://mhkdr.openei.org/submissions/483). The 144 wave cases represent waves with the following wave height and wave period ranges: - Significant Wave Height: 0.25 - 4.0m in 0.25m increments - Wave Period: 5 - 13 sec in 1 sec increments Each run was simulated using a Pierson-Moskowitz irregular wave spectrum with a 200 second ramp time and a total simulation time of 2,200 seconds. Summary data set includes a spreadsheet and image files with matrices that are associated with data from simulation runs. All matrices cover the same significant wave height and wave periods from the sim runs, in the same increments. The following matrices are included: - Mechanical Power Input: Absorbed power calculated using linear input velocity at PTO (power take-off) multiplied by winch tension. - Mechanical Power Output: The hydraulic power calculated at the pump output prior to the pressure relief valve dump. - Feed Pressure: Average pressure at RO (reverse osmosis) input prior to pre-filters - RO Power Input: The hydraulic power calculated at the RO system inlet, accounts for flow loss due to pressure relief valve - Water Production: Average clean water flow at RO output

NEWTS Well Summary by Hydrologic Regions and Subbasins in the U.S.

Oil and gas well production data (2000-2022), including water production and injection, as well as summary information (e.g., well count by status, total vertical depth statistics, etc.) spatially summarized by Watershed Boundary Dataset's (WBD) region (Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC) 2) and subbasin (HUC8). Energy-related produced waters data were acquired and summarized in support of the development of the National Energy Technology Laboratory's NEWTS (National Energy Water Treatment and Speciation Database). Due to the proprietary nature of the wellbore data, this derived product has been spatially compiled by key areas to support research and stakeholder needs.

CEA/DAM - CEA/DEN - LANL - IAEA - IPHC Collaboration Meeting on Nuclear Data, Nuclear Reaction Theories, and Machine Learning (Summary Report)

Dupuis hosted our biennial CEA/NNSA collaboration meeting, and Kawano and Lovell of LANL and Tamagno of CEA/DEN (Cadarache) visited CEA/DAM to discuss current issues and further developments in nuclear reaction modeling, nuclear data evaluation, and relevant programs of modern computer science, especially the machine learning technology. The discussions included topics of our common interest such as neutron inelastic scattering, capture, and fission, with particular emphasis on the actinide nuclear data evaluations. We report briefly the summary of our discussions. We also had a half-day video meeting with Capote of IAEA and Kerveno of IPHC to discuss nuclear reactions on actinides.

Summary of Nuclear Regulatory Commission Flood Barrier Testing Strategies Workshop

The United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Idaho National Laboratory (INL) organized a half-day workshop on flood barrier testing strategies (FBTS) at NRC Headquarters in Rockville, MD, via a webinar as well, on March 12, 2020. The workshop was a public meeting attended by members of the public and staff from NRC, INL, and other agencies. The workshop served multiple objectives: (1) present preliminary research results from the FBTS research project conducted by INL for NRC, and (2) engage industry stakeholders and technical experts to provide inputs and insights on testing strategies. This letter report documents the materials presented, participant questions and answers, and summaries of an open discussion during this FBTS workshop.

Energy Intensity Baselining & Tracking Summary Guide: Better Buildings, Better Plants

The Department of Energy (DOE) Better Plants (BP) program is a voluntary energy efficiency leadership initiative for U.S. manufacturers that encourages companies to reduce their energy intensity, typically by 25% within a ten-year period. BP partners are required to report their progress to the DOE annually by establishing an energy intensity baseline and tracking their energy consumption. BP partners receive access to a Technical Account Manager (TAM), DOE resources including software tools and trainings, and recognition when they achieve their goal. This summary guide provides the basics of baselining and tracking your energy intensity. For a more information and special considerations, please see the Energy Intensity Baselining and Tracking Guidance 2020.

Summary of Marine and Hydrokinetic (MHK) Composites Testing at Montana State University

Marine and hydrokinetic (MHK) energy technologies convert the energy of waves, tides, and river and ocean currents into electricity. The primary structure of MHK energy devices have difficult and challenging environments for which fiber reinforced plastics are often considered. For cost benefits, glass fiber reinforced plastics (GFRP) are the most prevalent system under consideration. Montana State University and Sandia National Laboratories have performed research into the moisture effects on the stiffness, strength, and damage of GFRPs for many years. This paper presents a summary of a portion of this effort and also provides references to the thesis and conferences that contain the detailed information. The results include models of moisture absorption, effects of stress on moisture uptake, effects of moisture on damage modes and development, laminate stacking order effects, and culminates with moisture uptake effects on a large sample of industry collected coupons.
