FLASH-therapy suitable single-pulse proton generation using TiH 2 under nanosecond laser irradiation

We investigated proton emission from titanium hydride (TiH 2 ) targets irradiated in vacuum by a 6-ns, 1064-nm Nd:YAG laser. Time-of-flight measurements with a Faraday cup and an electrostatic ion analyzer resolved distinct proton peaks at high pulse energies, with yields on the order of 10 9 protons per shot. Systematic scans over pulse energy and up to 1000 repeated shots showed that, while the peak amplitude gradually decreased, the integrated proton number remained nearly constant. This behavior is consistent with surface-induced broadening of the plasma expansion while bulk hydrogen is replenished by diffusion and repeated ablation of fresh TiH 2 layers. Using the measured proton numbers and pulse widths, a simple direct-plasma-injection-style scaling indicates peak currents of ∼100 mA and sub-microsecond pulse durations. The pulse structure and yield satisfy key ultra-high-dose-rate criteria and, together with sustained output over 1000 shots, support TiH 2 -based laser ion sources as practical candidates for FLASH-therapy (ultra-high-dose-rate)-oriented studies and injector development using direct plasma injection.

Benchmarking the Suitability of Novec$^{\mathrm{TM}}$ 4710 for Application in Flux Compression Generators

Here, an experimental study evaluated the feasibility of replacing traditional insulating gases such as SF 6 with C 4 F 7 N (3M TM , Novec 4710) in flux compression generator (FCG) applications. Currently available data indicate that Novec 4710 could offer certain performance benefits over SF 6 . However, the available literature is focused on low frequency (50–60 Hz) and dc at static pressures. To evaluate the performance of Novec 4710 under the pulsed dynamic pressure and temperature conditions found in an FCG, we report a performance comparison between three sets of identical FCGs using air, SF 6 , and Novec 4710 as the insulating gas. The generators used in this study had a single stage, directly seeded design with an armature diameter of 25 mm and a stator diameter of 46 mm. To highlight the performance of the different gases rather than any wire insulation, the stator was constructed with uninsulated wire. Furthermore, the generators were seeded aggressively, making the performance difference between the different gases more apparent. The performance was monitored with a pair of differential Rogowski coils that captured the generators’ di / dt while also using high-speed videography to capture possible gaseous breakdown signatures. The data gathered during this study indicate that Novec 4710 performs at least as well as SF 6 in FCG applications, if not significantly better.

Vessel Routing And Suitability Tool

The purpose of this tool is to assist harbor traffic controllers in routing vessel traffic into appropriate ports and piers in an emergency in the Hawaiian Islands. The user inputs information about a vessel coming to port, and the tool returns a list of appropriate options for the vessel to berth within the Hawaiian Islands. Additionally, the application can be used to store cargo data for tracking what locations can be used to lay down cargo in an emergency situation.

ANALYSIS OF SUITABLE METHODOLOGIES FOR COMPRESSOR MASS FLOW RATE CORRECTION TO OTHER SUPERHEAT LEVELS AND REFRIGERANTS

This paper investigates the impact of suction conditions and refrigerant on scroll compressor mass flow rate by using calorimeter tests from AHRI-11 and AHRI-21 reports, published by AHRI's Low-GWP Alternative Refrigerants Evaluation program. Two Copeland scroll compressors (20 and 51 cm3) have been analyzed including different suction conditions (SH = 11K, SH = 22K, Ti = 18ºC) and several refrigerants (R134a, R32, R410A, R404A, etc.). Previous studies have explored response surfaces for energy consumption and mass flow rate variables. This study aims to expand the analysis by identifying the optimal approach to extrapolate mass flow rate from specific suction conditions to others SH or suction temperature levels and refrigerants. The current compressor characterization standard relies on the 1981 Dabiri correlation to correct compressor mass flow rate with suction conditions. Thus, this study aims to assess the adequacy of this correction and explore alternative correction methods for improved results.

Report on local data recovery approaches suitable for weather and climate prediction (Deliverable 1.3) (V.1.0)

Numerical weather and climate prediction rates as one of the scientific applications whose accuracy improvements greatly depend on the growth of the available computing power. As the number of cores in top computing facilities pushes into the millions, increasing average frequency of hardware and software failures forces users to review their algorithms and systems in order to protect simulations from breakdown. This report surveys approaches for fault-tolerance in numerical algorithms and system resilience in parallel simulations from the perspective of numerical weather and climate prediction systems. A selection of existing strategies is analyzed, featuring interpolation-restart and compressed checkpointing for the numerics, in-memory checkpointing, user-level failure mitigation-based and backup-based methods for the systems. Numerical examples showcase the performance of the techniques in addressing faults, with particular emphasis on iterative solvers for linear systems, a staple of atmospheric fluid flow solvers. The potential impact of these strategies is discussed in relation to current development of numerical weather prediction algorithms and systems towards the exascale. Trade-offs between performance, efficiency and effectiveness of resiliency strategies are analyzed and some recommendations outlined for future developments.

Saturated Bioenergy Buffers: Site Suitability Classification and Estimated Areas of Candidate Sites in the U.S. Midwest Under Three Scenarios

The loss of nutrients applied to tile-drained row-crop fields is a critically important component of agriculture’s impact on surface water quality, because drain tiles provide a short circuit to ditches and creeks, resulting in rapid nutrient loss. This nutrient loss ultimately advances eutrophication and hypoxia, i.e., the creation of dead zones in bodies of water, both locally and regionally (for example, in western Lake Erie and the Gulf of Mexico). Saturated buffers help address the tile-drainage water quality problem, and incorporating bioenergy crops into saturated bioenergy buffers could provide both environmental protection and an additional source of income for farmers.

Suitability of Altair FEKO's Computational Electromagnetic Techniques for Tree Model Scattering and Penetration at Ku-band

Foliage penetration (FOPEN) radar at lower frequencies (VHF, UHF) is a well-studied area with many contributions. However, there is growing interest in using higher Ku-band frequencies (12-18 GHz) for FOPEN. Specifically, the reduced wavelength sizes provide some key saliencies for developing more optimized detection solutions. The disadvantage is that exploiting Ku-band for FOPEN is complicated because higher frequencies have pronounced scattering effects due to their smaller wavelengths. A methodology h as been developed to model and simulate FOPEN problems that characterize the phenomenology of Ku-band electromagnetic ( EM ) wave transmissions through moderate foliage. The details of this research (i.e. the realistic tree models, simulation setup and results) are documented in multiple reports. The main focus of this report is to describe the preliminary validation and verification of Altair FEKO, the computational EM (CEM) software used for this research, as well as present a simplified symmetrical tree model and an introductory CAD tree model.

Vexcel Imaging's Suitability for Automatic Verification

Accurate, independently verified geospatial data is essential for automated calibration, validation, and operational decision-making. This study evaluated the positional accuracy of Vexcel Imaging™’s UltraCam® Osprey imagery (7.5 cm GSD) using globally distributed Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) as independent control. Despite manufacturer claims of 15 cm horizontal accuracy, residual errors were consistently one to two orders of magnitude larger, with no subset of imagery meeting precision thresholds. These discrepancies cannot be explained by normal photogrammetric or environmental factors and raise concerns about the reliability of the imagery for high-precision tasks. The results demonstrate that Vexcel imagery, in its current form, is unsuitable for workflows requiring rigorous spatial accuracy or automated verification. At the same time, the reproducible validation framework developed in this study establishes a scalable method for assessing commercial imagery, ensuring that future products can be independently and objectively verified before operational adoption.
