Measurements over distributed high performance computing and storage systems

A strawman proposal is given for a framework for presenting a common set of metrics for supercomputers, workstations, file servers, mass storage systems, and the networks that interconnect them. Production control and database systems are also included. Though other applications and third part software systems are not addressed, it is important to measure them as well.

Transient performance evaluation of an integrated heat pipe-thermal storage system

Transient performance tests of an integrated heat pipe-thermal storage system have been conducted. This system was developed as a part of an Organic Rankine Cycle-Solar Dynamic Power System receiver for future power systems. The integrated system consists of potassium heat pipe elements that incorporate thermal energy storage canisters within the vapor space and an organic fluid (toluene) heater tube used as the condenser region of the heat pipe. The transient performance tests determined the operating characteristics and power input limits of the integrated heat pipe-thermal storage unit under conditions corresponding to re-acquisition of the sun during emergence from eclipse conditions and to the initial start-up of the solar dynamic power system. The tests demonstrated that the heat pipe-thermal storage element is not limited under conditions corresponding to emergence from eclipse during normal orbital operations and the heat pipe will successfully start-up from the frozen condition with full input power at the onset. Details of the test procedures and results of the tests are presented in this paper.

Phase change materials for thermal energy storage: A perspective on linking phonon physics to performance

Thermal energy storage is being actively investigated for grid, industrial, and building applications for realizing an all-renewable energy world. Phase change materials (PCMs), which are commonly used in thermal energy storage applications, are difficult to design because they require excellent energy density and thermal transport, both of which are difficult to predict from simple physics-based models. In this Perspective, we describe recent advances in the understanding of the equilibrium and transport properties of PCM materials that can help accelerate technology development. We then emphasize how the microscopic phonon picture of both liquids and solids enables a better understanding of novel PCM systems and their predictive power. Here, we then show how this microscopic picture can be used to understand kinetic processes, such as supercooling, and how it can impact the thermal power output in thermal energy storage systems.

Iso-cost-performance of thermal energy storage

As thermal energy storage (TES) systems gain increasing recognition as next-generation energy storage solutions, evaluating their techno-economic performance is crucial. This perspective analyzes the cost-performance of latent heat-based TES systems and introduces the concept of iso-cost-performance—maintaining a constant cost per unit energy ($\$$/kWh) despite material degradation. Using an empirical degradation model, we show that after 1200 thermal cycles, the thermal conductivity and volumetric energy density of a paraffin-based phase change material (PCM) decreased by 36.0% and 26.1%, respectively, resulting in a 31.2% reduction in the figure of merit (FOM) and, consequently, the system cost-performance. However, by introducing thermally conductive additives to enhance effective thermal conductivity, the TES system can recover its initial FOM, achieving iso-cost-performance operation. This framework quantitatively demonstrates how degradation-mitigation strategies—such as improving thermal conductivity—can offset material degradations and maintain long-term cost-effectiveness. Beyond PCM-based TES, the proposed FOM-based approach provides a generalized pathway for cost-performance optimization across various TES technologies.

Performance measurements and operational characteristics of the Storage Tek ACS 4400 tape library with the Cray Y-MP EL

With over 5000 units sold, the Storage Tek Automated Cartridge System (ACS) 4400 tape library is currently the most popular large automated tape library. Based on 3480/90 tape technology, the library is used as the migration device ('nearline' storage) in high-performance mass storage systems. In its maximum configuration, one ACS 4400 tape library houses sixteen 3480/3490 tape drives and is capable of holding approximately 6000 cartridge tapes. The maximum storage capacity of one library using 3480 tapes is 1.2 TB and the advertised aggregate I/O rate is about 24 MB/s. This paper reports on an extensive set of tests designed to accurately assess the performance capabilities and operational characteristics of one STK ACS 4400 tape library holding approximately 5200 cartridge tapes and configured with eight 3480 tape drives. A Cray Y-MP EL2-256 was configured as its host machine. More than 40,000 tape jobs were run in a variety of conditions to gather data in the areas of channel speed characteristics, robotics motion, time taped mounts, and timed tape reads and writes.

The cryogenic on-orbit liquid analytical tool (COOLANT) - A computer program for evaluating the thermodynamic performance of orbital cryogen storage facilities

The United States plans to establish a permanent manned presence at the Space Station Freedom in low earth orbit (LEO) and then carry out exploration of the solar system from this base. These plans may require orbital cryogenic propellant storage depots. The COOLANT program has been developed to analyze the thermodynamic performance of these depots to support design tradeoff studies. It was developed as part of the Long Term Cryogenic Storage Facility Systems Study for NASA/MSFC. This paper discusses the program structure and capabilities of the COOLANT program. In addition, the results of an analysis of a 200,000 lbm hydrogen/oxygen storage depot tankset using COOLANT are presented.

Rational Design of High-Performing Electrodes in Energy Storage Devices

Rational design of interfaces with proper physico-chemical properties is necessary to optimize the performance of electrochemical devices, which requires fundamental understanding of the interfaces. In this project, we leveraged quantum mechanical and molecular dynamics simulations as well as machine learning (ML) technique to correlate the relationships between structure and properties including ion transport and electronic structures of cathode host materials in lithium-sulfur (Li-S) and carbon anode in sodium (Na) batteries for improved electrochemical performance.

Building and managing high performance, scalable, commodity mass storage systems

The NAS Systems Division has recently embarked on a significant new way of handling the mass storage problem. One of the basic goals of this new development are to build systems at very large capacity and high performance, yet have the advantages of commodity products. The central design philosophy is to build storage systems the way the Internet was built. Competitive, survivable, expandable, and wide open. The thrust of this paper is to describe the motivation for this effort, what we mean by commodity mass storage, what the implications are for a facility that performs such an action, and where we think it will lead.

Performance Modeling of Network-Attached Storage Device Based Hierarchical Mass Storage Systems

Network attached storage devices improve I/O performance by separating control and data paths and eliminating host intervention during the data transfer phase. Devices are attached to both a high speed network for data transfer and to a slower network for control messages. Hierarchical mass storage systems use disks to cache the most recently used files and a combination of robotic and manually mounted tapes to store the bulk of the files in the file system. This paper shows how queuing network models can be used to assess the performance of hierarchical mass storage systems that use network attached storage devices as opposed to host attached storage devices. Simulation was used to validate the model. The analytic model presented here can be used, among other things, to evaluate the protocols involved in 1/0 over network attached devices.

Modeling and Performance Simulation of the Mass Storage Network Environment

This paper describes the application of modeling and simulation in evaluating and predicting the performance of the mass storage network environment. Network traffic is generated to mimic the realistic pattern of file transfer, electronic mail, and web browsing. The behavior and performance of the mass storage network and a typical client-server Local Area Network (LAN) are investigated by modeling and simulation. Performance characteristics in throughput and delay demonstrate the important role of modeling and simulation in network engineering and capacity planning.
