SiO antireflection coatings for GaAs injection lasers, discussing single layer quarter-wave coatings for loss minimization and bandwidth maximization
Thermophysical properties of plasma sprayed materials were determined for the following plasma sprayed materials: CaO - stabilized ZrO2, Y2O3 - stabilized ZerO2, Al2O3, HfO2 Mo, nichrome, NiAl, Mo-ZrO2, and MoAl2O3 mixtures. In all cases the thermal conductivity of the as-sprayed materials was found to be considerably lower than that of the bulk material. The flash-laser thermal diffusivity technique was used both for diffusivity determination of single-layer materials and to determine the thermal contact resistance at the interface of two-layer specimens.
The load-carrying and thermal characteristics of flat conductor cable and round wire cables have been investigated with all conductors in each cable under varying loads in air and vacuum environments. The test procedure is described and results are presented in graphic form. Derating factors for both round wire and flat conductor cable are established for operation in a vacuum environment. Rating factors are established for flat conductor cable for use with round wire loading tables. The results of these tests show that single layer flat conductor size, or that the voltage drop across flat conductor cable will be lower than that of round cable under the same load.
Heat pipe can reverse itself with gas reservoir acting as evaporator, leading to rapid recovery from liquid in reservoir. Single layer of fine-mesh screen is included inside reservoir to assure uniform liquid distribution over hottest parts of internal surface until liquid is completely removed.
High-transmission, low-pass scatter filters for blocking at wavelengths from 3.5 to 50 microns and single-layer antireflection coatings for optical materials used in the 25- to 300-micron region of the spectrum are described. The application of both techniques to liquid-He-cooled filters permits the construction of efficient low-pass and medium-width bandpass filters for use throughout the far infrared.
Based on classical electromagnetic theory, reflectivity calculations for various single and double optical coating systems for silicon solar cells are presented. From calculations and considerations of solar spectral response of the solar cells, the number and thickness of coating materials needed to obtain efficient solar cells can be predicted. Some experimental results on single layer coated cells are also presented for comparison with calculations, and agreement is good. By means of microwave transmission line analogy, the design of the multilayer coating can be simplified by using Tchebycheff polynomials.
A new technique for calculating the entire flow-field on spherically blunted circular cones at high angles of attack and high Reynolds numbers is described. The calculations are based on a single-layer system of three-dimensional parabolic equations which are approximations to the full steady Navier-Stokes equations. Initial conditions at the sphere-cone tangency plane are provided by using an inviscid time-dependent solution added to a viscous nonsimilar boundary layer solution. Calculated results are compared with experimental heat transfer and pressure data for a 15 deg half-angle cone with a 1-in. spherical nose at 15 deg angle of attack. The free-stream Mach number is 10.6, and the free-stream Reynolds number is 1,200,000 per foot. Excellent agreement between the calculated and experimental data for both pressure and heat transfer is obtained.
The far IR nighttime absorption spectrum of the earth's atmosphere above 14 km is determined from observations of the bright moon. The spectra were obtained using a Michelson interferometer attached to a 30-cm telescope aboard a high-altitude jet aircraft. Comparison with a single-layer model atmosphere implies a vertical column of 3.4 plus or minus 0.4 microns of precipitable water on 30 August 1971 and 2.4 plus or minus 0.3 microns of precipitable water on 6 January 1972.-
A user-oriented computer program CIVM-JET 4B is described to predict the large-deflection elastic-plastic structural responses of fragment impacted single-layer: (a) partial-ring fragment containment or deflector structure or (b) complete-ring fragment containment structure. These two types of structures may be either free or supported in various ways. Supports accommodated include: (1) point supports such as pinned-fixed, ideally-clamped, or supported by a structural branch simulating mounting-bracket structure and (2) elastic foundation support distributed over selected regions of the structure. The initial geometry of each partial or complete ring may be circular or arbitrarily curved; uniform or variable thicknesses of the structure are accommodated. The structural material is assumed to be initially isotropic; strain hardening and strain rate effects are taken into account.
A general device-analysis program has been utilized to study the efficiency of silicon solar cells. The analysis is applied to specific geometries of both n(+)-p and n(+)-p-p(+) solar cells, and involves a numerical solution of the basic transport and continuity equations. This approach allows solutions that are free of typical limiting assumptions involved in solving the device equations as well as solutions relating to lifetime, mobility variations, and diffused-region profiles. The analysis includes available empirical information on diffusion length, mobility, and lifetime as a function of doping, as well as a Gaussian profile for the diffused region. Results are presented which illustrate the limitations of efficiency as a function of doping. It is found that the maximum efficiencies for both types of cell converge at lower resistivities to around 16% with air-mass-zero radiation and a single-layer absorbing-SiO antireflecting film. It is also found that the minority-carrier lifetime, both in the n(+) surface and p-type bulk regions, presents serious limitations to conversion efficiency, particularly in the low-resistivity cells.
A low temperature plasma polymerization process is described for applying an optical plastic substrate, such as a polymethyl methacrylate lens, with a single layer abrasive resistant coating to improve the durability of the plastic.
A high speed CMOS formed on a single semiconductor substrate includes a DMOS having an asymmetric channel and a VMOS with a relatively short channel length. The short channel length of the VMOS is achieved by forming a double diffusion along one edge of a V groove, or ion implanting boron into the apex of the V groove and diffusing a single layer to a relatively deep depth along both edges of the groove.
The growth of a human colon carcinoma cell line (SK-CO-1) and its production of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in monolayer culture and on single layers of glass beads in unit gravity were evaluated. The limitations of using a microsphere-cell growth system in unit gravity were identified and how these may be overcome in space was considered. The project had the following tasks: (1) growth of cultured human colon carcinoma cells on a monolayer and CEA production; (2) evaluation of CEA production and release by SK-CO-1 cells grown on glass beads; (3) evaluation of other microcarriers for growing SK-CO-1 cells and determination of the minimum amount of culture medium needed for cell growth; and (4) growth of SK-CO-1 cells on collagen monolayers and CEA production.
Consideration is given to the design of a single-layer optimum antireflection coating for AMOS (antireflection-coated metal-oxide-semiconductor) solar cells to match the entire sunlight spectrum. The energy conversion efficiency is maximized by maximizing the open-circuit voltage and the short-circuit current. The former is maximized by oxidation techniques and the latter is maximized by the light-coupling into the solar cell. With reference to the effective index of refraction as obtained by ellipsometry, examples of optimum antireflection coatings for 60-A Au-GaAs solar cells are presented.
The scattering of the sound of a jet engine by an airplane fuselage is modeled by solving the axially symmetric Helmholtz equation exterior to a long thin ellipsoid. The integral equation method based on the single layer potential formulation is used. A family of coordinate systems on the body is introduced and an algorithm is presented to determine the optimal coordinate system. Numerical results verify that the optimal choice enables the solution to be computed with a grid that is coarse relative to the wavelength.
The mechanical behavior of the vessels and blood is mathematically analyzed at the point of aortic bifurcation using a homogeneous single layer channel as a model of the aorta. Allowance is made for the fact that the aortic intima is considerably less rigid than the other layers. For analysis of blood flow in the major arteries, the blood is treated as a viscous Newtonian fluid whose movements are described by Navier-Stokes equations and a continuity equation. Blood flow dynamics at the aortic bifurcation are discussed on the basis of the results.
Two computer programs are described for predicting the transient large deflection elastic viscoplastic responses of thin single layer, initially flat unstiffened or integrally stiffened, Kirchhoff-Lov ductile metal panels. The PLATE 1 program pertains to structural responses produced by prescribed externally applied transient loading or prescribed initial velocity distributions. The collision imparted velocity method PLATE 1 program concerns structural responses produced by impact of an idealized nondeformable fragment. Finite elements are used to represent the structure in both programs. Strain hardening and strain rate effects of initially isotropic material are considered.
