Nonresonant Raman Control of Ferroelectric Polarization

Important advances is recently made in the search for materials with complex multi-phase landscapes that host photoinduced metastable collective states with exotic functionalities. In almost all cases so far, the desired phases are accessed by exploiting light–matter interactions via the imaginary part of the dielectric function through above-bandgap or resonant mode excitation. Nonresonant Raman excitation of coherent modes is experimentally observed and proposed for dynamic material control, but the resulting atomic excursion is limited to perturbative levels. Here, in this study, this challenge is overcome by employing nonresonant ultrashort pulses with low photon energies well below the bandgap. Using mid-infrared pulses, ferroelectric reversal is induced in lithium niobate, and the large-amplitude mode displacements are characterized through femtosecond stimulated Raman scattering and second harmonic generation. This approach, validated by first-principle calculations, defines a novel method for synthesizing hidden phases with unique functional properties and manipulating complex energy landscapes at reduced energy consumption and ultrafast speeds.

Tunable Magnetic and Optical Anisotropy in ZrO 2 ‐Co Vertically Aligned Nanocomposites

Abstract Metamaterials have gained great research interest in recent years owing to their potential for property tunability, multifunctionality, and property coupling. As a new group of self‐assembled thin films, vertically aligned nanocomposite (VAN)‐based hybrid metamaterials have been demonstrated with significant anisotropic physical properties and a broad range of property tailorability, such as optical anisotropy, magnetic anisotropy, hyperbolic dispersion, and enhanced second harmonic generation properties. Herein, self‐assembled ZrO 2 ‐Co nanocomposite films, with high epitaxial quality and ultra‐fine vertically aligned Co nanopillars (with an average diameter of ≈2 nm) embedded in a ZrO 2 matrix, are fabricated using a pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method. The Co pillar density can be effectively tuned by varying the Co concentration in the target, which results in tunable optical properties and magnetic properties. Specifically, a high saturation magnetization of 100 emu cm −3 , strong out‐of‐plane magnetic anisotropy and tailorable magnetization properties are achieved via tuning the Co nanopillar density. Coupled with hyperbolic dispersion of dielectric constant from 950 to 1500 nm in wavelength, plasmonic Co metal nanopillars, and the unique dielectric ZrO 2 matrix, this new nanoscale hybrid metamaterial shows great potential for future integrated optical and magnetic device designs.

Photophysics and Spin-Physics Studies on Persistent Upconversion Luminescence from Nonlinearly Polarizable Ferroelectric-Like Lattice Prepared by Orderly Packing Donor–Acceptor Structures under Multiphoton Excitation

The ultralong-lived upconversion luminescence with the lifetime of 0.48 s in a broad spectral range (530–650 nm) is observed in CD49 (9-(3-(5-bromopyridin-3-yl)prop-2-yn-1-yl)-9H-carbazole) crystal designed with donor–acceptor (carbazole–pyridine) structures under infrared excitation, simultaneously accompanied with second harmonic generation (SHG). This phenomenon indicates orderly packing donor–acceptor structures form a nonlinearly polarizable ferroelectric-like lattice with ultralong-lived light-emitting states, leading to much prolonged nonlinear optical behaviors. The persistent upconversion luminescence together with SHG is largely reduced when lowering crystallinity. This implies that nonlinearly polarizable ferroelectric-like lattice provides the necessary condition to generate persistent upconversion luminescence. Evidently, persistent upconversion luminescence becomes completely lacking when only using ultralong-lived light-emitting states without nonlinearly polarizable ferroelectric-like lattice, exampled by 4-(dimethylamino)benzonitrile dispersed in polyvinyl alcohol matrix. Magneto-photoluminescence shows that persistent upconversion luminescence is essentially a super-delayed fluorescence from crystalline intermolecular charge-transfer excitons formed in the nonlinearly polarizable ferroelectric-like lattice. Magnetodielectrics indicate crystalline intermolecular charge-transfer excitons are coupled with nonlinearly polarizable ferroelectric-like lattice, leading to prolonged nonlinear optical behaviors shown as persistent upconversion luminescence through super delayed fluorescence. In conclusion, therefore, crystalline intermolecular charge-transfer excitons formed in nonlinearly polarizable ferroelectric-like lattice provide an interesting platform to generate prolonged nonlinear optical behaviors toward developing persistent upconversion luminescence under multiphoton excitation.

Asymmetric Character of the Ferroelectric Phase Transition and Charged Domain Walls in a Hybrid Improper Ferroelectric

Abstract In improper ferroelectrics, the spontaneous ordering is typically driven by a structural distortion or a magnetic spin alignment. The induced electric polarization is only a secondary effect. This dependence is a rich source for unusual phenomena and ferroelectric domain configurations for proper, polarization‐driven ferroelectrics. This study focuses on the polar domain structure and the hysteretic behavior at the ferroelectric phase transition in Ca 3 Mn 1.9 Ti 0.1 O 7 as a representative of the recently discovered hybrid improper ferroelectric class of multiferroics. Combining optical second harmonic generation and Raman spectroscopy gives access to the spontaneous structural distortion and the resulting improper electric polarization. This study shows that hybrid improper ferroelectrics contrast proper and improper ferroelectrics in several ways. Most intriguingly, adjacent ferroelectric domains favor head‐to‐head and tail‐to‐tail domain walls over charge‐neutral configurations. Furthermore, the phase transition occurs in an asymmetric fashion. The regime of phase coexistence of the nonpolar and polar phases shows a clear and abrupt upper temperature limit. In contrast, the coexistence toward low temperatures is best described as a fade‐out process, where 100‐nm‐sized islands of the nonpolar phase expand deep into the polar phase.

Materials Engineering of Violin Soundboards by Stradivari and Guarneri

Abstract We investigated the material properties of Cremonese soundboards using a wide range of spectroscopic, microscopic, and chemical techniques. We found similar types of spruce in Cremonese soundboards as in modern instruments, but Cremonese spruces exhibit unnatural elemental compositions and oxidation patterns that suggest artificial manipulation. Combining analytical data and historical information, we may deduce the minerals being added and their potential functions—borax and metal sulfates for fungal suppression, table salt for moisture control, alum for molecular crosslinking, and potash or quicklime for alkaline treatment. The overall purpose may have been wood preservation or acoustic tuning. Hemicellulose fragmentation and altered cellulose nanostructures are observed in heavily treated Stradivari specimens, which show diminished second‐harmonic generation signals. Guarneri's practice of crosslinking wood fibers via aluminum coordination may also affect mechanical and acoustic properties. Our data suggest that old masters undertook materials engineering experiments to produce soundboards with unique properties.

Tailored Frequency Conversion in Nonlinear Subwavelength Grating Metaslabs

The use of metaslab waveguides consisting of subwavelength gratings (SWGs) is proposed as a highly flexible approach to obtain phase‐matched frequency conversion in nonlinear integrated devices. Control over the phase matching (PM) condition is achieved through modification of the linear modal propagation constants by the SWG. The method is experimentally demonstrated by fabrication of 0.4 mm‐long GaAs metaslabs designed for second harmonic generation of near‐infrared light. A controlled spectral shift of up to 100 nm in the PM condition, relative to a uniform slab is observed. Excellent agreement is found between the experimental results and finite‐difference eigenmode simulations, which predict a tunable frequency conversion bandwidth of ∼300 nm for the design parameters. The different regimes of PM control supported by the structure are discussed. This work highlights the potential of SWGs as building blocks for tailored frequency conversion in nonlinear integrated devices.

BaCu 2 SiS 4 : A New Member of the A II B I 2 M IV Q 4 Chalcogenide Family with a Chiral Crystal Structure

Abstract Noncentrosymmetric ternary and quaternary chalcogenides are studied as promising nonlinear optical (NLO) materials in the mid‐infrared region. Here, we report the synthesis of a new material BaCu 2 SiS 4 in the A II B I 2 M IV Q 4 family ( A =divalent metal; B =monovalent metal; M =tetrel, Q =chalcogen), and discuss its crystal structure, thermal stability, optical behavior, and electronic structure. BaCu 2 SiS 4 crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric chiral space group P 3 2 21 with lattice parameters a =6.1440(3) Å, c =15.3542(8) Å, V =501.95(6) Å 3 , Z =3. The structure features helical channels formed by corner‐sharing [CuS 4 ] and [SiS 4 ] tetrahedral units. Synthesis was carried out in a molten salt flux, as opposed to a traditional solid‐state route from elements, to minimize the formation of a competing ternary phase, Ba 2 SiS 4 . BaCu 2 SiS 4 is a semiconductor with an experimentally‐determined direct bandgap of ~2.2 eV. The material exhibits second harmonic generation (SHG) activity, confirming the noncentrosymmetric nature of the structure. Analysis of reported A II B I 2 M IV Q 4 crystal structures pointed out a correlation among potential structure types and the radii of the constituent elements. Total energy calculations were carried out to explore the relative stability of several reported crystal structures in this family of compounds.

Phagosomal chloride dynamics in the alveolar macrophage

Acidification in intracellular organelles is tightly linked to the influx of Cl – counteracting proton translocation by the electrogenic V-ATPase. We quantified the dynamics of Cl – transfer accompanying cargo incorporation into single phagosomes in alveolar macrophages (AMs). Phagosomal Cl – concentration and acidification magnitude were followed in real time with maximal acidification achieved at levels of approximately 200 mM. Live cell confocal microscopy verified that phagosomal Cl – influx utilized predominantly the Cl – channel CFTR. Relative levels of elemental chlorine (Cl) in hard X-ray fluorescence microprobe (XFM) analysis within single phagosomes validated the increase in Cl – content. XFM revealed the complex interplay between elemental K content inside the phagosome and changes in Cl – during phagosomal particle uptake. Cl – -dependent changes in phagosomal membrane potential were obtained using second harmonic generation (SHG) microscopy. These studies provide a mechanistic insight for screening studies in drug development targeting pulmonary inflammatory disease.

Synthesis, structure, linear and nonlinear optical properties of noncentrosymmetric quaternary diamond-like semiconductors, Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 (CZGSe) and the novel Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7

In this work, two quaternary diamond-like semiconductors (DLSs) in the Cu-Zn-Ge-Se system, the known Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 (also referred to as CZGSe) and the new Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , are compared in terms of their crystal structures, electronic structures and physicochemical properties. Both compounds were prepared by high-temperature, solid-state synthesis at 800 degrees C. Single crystal X-ray diffraction was used to determine the structure of Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 . The structures of both Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 and Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 can be considered as derivatives of cubic diamond. Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , with a reduced symmetry due to the cation ordering pattern, adopts the Cu 4 NiSi 2 S 7 structure type, with space group C2. The corner-sharing tetrahedra in Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 are slightly distorted because the charge for some of the S 2 - anions is not compensated by the first-nearest-neighbor cations. Rietveld refinements using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data were used to assess the phase purity of the samples and confirm the bulk structural behavior. Diffuse reflectance UV/Vis/NIR spectroscopy shows that Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 and Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 have direct optical bandgaps of 1.38 and 0.91 eV, respectively. Electronic structure calculations implementing density functional theory confirm the direct bandgap for Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 , with a calculated value of 0.62 eV. Both compounds are air stable, thermally stable up to relatively high temperatures, undergo phase transitions and have wide windows of optical clarity. The Kurtz-Perry powder technique was used to determine the second harmonic generation (SHG) responses using a commercial AgGaSe 2 standard. While Cu 4 ZnGe 2 Se 7 displays a weak SHG response, Cu 2 ZnGeSe 4 exhibits a response that is greater than several benchmark materials, with a large SHG coefficient, χ (2) , of 43 ± 6 pm/V at λ = 2900 nm.

Pd and octahedra do not get along: Square planar [PdS 4 ] units in non-centrosymmetric La 6 PdSi 2 S 14

Non-linear optical (NLO) materials require a balance of high second-harmonic generation (SHG) signal and laser damage threshold (LDT), as well as phase matchable behavior. Herein, we report a new member of the (RE) 6 (TM) x (Tt) 2 Q 14 family of compounds, La 6 PdSi 2 S 14 , which, unlike all other reported TM analogues crystallizing in hexagonal P6 3 space group, crystallizes in the non-centrosymmetric monoclinic P2 1 space group. The crystal structure contains chains of edge-sharing distorted square planar [PdS 4 ] units. The square-planar coordination of Pd in La 6 PdSi 2 S 14 exhibits remarkable NLO properties with high SHG (3.7 × AgGaS 2 ) and LDT (3 × AgGaS 2 ) values as well as phase matchability. This shows the promise of novel materials with distorted structural motifs for enhanced NLO properties. Further, upon formation of bimetallic chiral sulfides containing both Cu and Pd, Cu occupies the opposite faces of the octahedra forming [CuS 3 ] units while Pd can be stabilized in the center of PdS 6 octahedra in the hexagonal P6 3 crystal structure of La 6 Pd 0.5 CuSi 2 S 14 . This suggests that it is possible to form mixed metal systems which could further enhance NLO properties by incorporation of additional structural distortions.

Crystal Growth of Quaternary Rare Earth Selenosilicates by Using the Flux-Assisted Boron Chalcogen Mixture Method: Investigation of Their Magnetic and Optical Properties

A series of rare earth magnesium selenosilicates, RE3Mg 0.5 SiSe 7 (RE = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd, Tb, Dy) were obtained as single crystal using the flux assisted boron chalcogen mixture (BCM) method. The structures of the crystals were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The RE3Mg 0.5 SiSe 7 series crystallizes in the hexagonal crystal system in the space group P6 3 . Polycrystalline powders were synthesized to perform physical property measurements. Magnetic measurements over the 2–300 K temperature range reveal that Ce 3 Mg 0.5 SiSe 7 and Gd 3 Mg 0.5 SiSe 7 exhibit paramagnetic behavior with negative Weiss constants (θ W = −14.50, θ W = −6.13 K, respectively). The optical properties of RE 3 Mg 0.5 SiSe 7 (RE = Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) were measured by ultraviolet–visible (UV–vis) diffuse reflectance. Density functional theory (DFT) electronic structure calculations were performed. Furthermore, a second harmonic generation measurement was performed on a polycrystalline powder of Ce 3 Mg 0.5 SiSe 7 and was found to be SHG active with an efficiency of 0.11 times the standard potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KDP).

Ferroelectric and Charge Transport Properties in Strain-Engineered Two-Dimensional Lead Iodide Perovskites

Transitions from three-dimensional (3D) hybrid organic–inorganic perovskite (HOIP) structures to lower dimensions including 2D and quasi-2D structures open a new range of functional properties in these materials systems. Yet, the performance of solar cells made from 2D HOIP is below that of the 3D compositions due to the higher band-gap energy, low carrier concentration, and anisotropy in charge transport. Controlling ferroelectricity in 2D HOIPs is considered to be a powerful strategy to drive the spatial separation of photogenerated charge carriers to improve the photovoltaic action in this class of HOIPs. Here, we explore the strain-dependent ferroelectricity and charge carrier properties in strain-engineered 2D-layered HOIPs utilizing advanced scanning probe microscopy (SPM) techniques. Band excitation-piezoresponse force microscopy (BE-PFM) and contact Kelvin probe force microscopy (cKPFM) reveal ferroelectric domains and switchable dynamics with significantly low switching voltages in the low-strain film. Photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy shows strain-dependent optical properties and a noncentrosymmetric structure with strong second-harmonic generation (SHG) peaks in the low-strain film. In addition, KPFM results demonstrate a higher surface potential in the low-strain films, while the photovoltage and local current are the highest on the high-strain film. Furthermore, our study demonstrates the critical role of strain engineering on the electromechanical and charge carrier dynamics in 2D HOIPs, which is important for development of 2D HOIP devices.

Solution-Grown Ternary Semiconductors: Nanostructuring and Stereoelectronic Lone Pair Distortions in I–V–VI 2 Materials

Alkali pnictogen dichalcogenides–I–V–VI 2 or APnCh 2 –have been identified as promising semiconducting materials for energy conversion devices. However, the controlled nanoscale synthesis and our understanding of the effects of cation ordering and stereochemically active lone pairs on the structures of these ternary compounds remain underdeveloped. Here, we use solution-phase chemistry to synthesize a family of APnCh 2 materials, including LiSbSe 2 , NaSbS 2 , NaSbSe 2 , NaBiS 2 , and NaBiSe 2 . Our approach utilizes alkali metal hydrides (AH) or carboxylates, A(O 2 CR), PnPh 3 , and elemental chalcogens as synthetic precursors and oleylamine or 1-octadecene as solvents. Synthetic manipulation via fine-tuning of reaction temperature enables control over the degree of ordering caused by the Sb 5s 2 lone pair-induced distortions in NaSbS 2 . Pair distribution function analysis demonstrates that the structure of the Sb-containing phases deviates much more from a disordered rock salt structure than that of the Bi-containing phases. This local distortion, induced by the Sb lone pair, leads to a previously unreported noncentrosymmetric NaSbS 2 crystal structure, which is additionally supported by second-harmonic generation measurements. Infrared and multinuclear solid-state NMR spectroscopies show that oleylamine or chelating carboxylates and, in some cases, unreacted precursors (LiH and PnPh 3 ) remain bound to the nanocrystalline surfaces. Further, a deeper understanding of the local atomic environment, long-range ordering, surface chemistry, and optoelectronic properties of these materials may speed up their fundamental study and application.

Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 : A Noncentrosymmetric Polar Crystal Structure with Disordered Trimers

Phase-pure polycrystalline Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 was prepared and determined to adopt the noncentrosymmetric polar crystal structure (space group Cmc2 1 ) based on results of second harmonic generation, convergent beam electron diffraction, and Rietveld refinements using powder neutron diffraction data. The crystal structure features zigzag chains of corner-shared trimers, which contain three distorted face-sharing octahedra. The three metal sites in the trimers are occupied by disordered Ru/Mn with three different ratios: Ru1:Mn1 = 0.202(8):0.798(8), Ru2:Mn2 = 0.27(1):0.73(1), and Ru3:Mn3 = 0.40(1):0.60(1), successfully lowering the symmetry and inducing the polar crystal structure from the centrosymmetric parent compounds Ba 4 T 3 O 10 (T = Mn, Ru; space group Cmca). The valence state of Ru/Mn is confirmed to be +4 according to X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy. Ba 4 RuMn 2 O 10 is a narrow bandgap (~0.6 eV) semiconductor exhibiting spin-glass behavior with strong magnetic frustration and antiferromagnetic interactions.

FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 : Hidden Gems of Ternary Tetrel Pnictides with Outstanding Nonlinear Optical Properties

Metal silicon phosphides have shown promise as nonlinear optical materials. To be practically useful and cheap, earth-abundant 3d transition metals are preferred over their scarcer and more expensive 4d and 5d counterparts. Here, we developed a synthetic method to produce polycrystalline bulk powders and millimeter-sized single crystals of ternary compounds FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 . Both studied compounds have noncentrosymmetric and chiral crystal structures with ordered Si/P arrangements as was confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction and solid-state NMR. Despite the presence of the transition metal, FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 are semiconductors with direct band gaps of 1.3 and 1.6 eV, respectively, indicating low-spin d 6 electronic configuration for octahedral Fe 2+ and Co 3+ . Relative to reported sulfide materials, FeSi 4 P 4 and CoSi 3 P 3 small band gap semiconductors demonstrate an outstanding combination of second-harmonic generation (SHG) activity and laser damage threshold (LDT). Both studied materials are phase-matchable with a 2.09 μm laser and not only exhibit 2.5–3.0 times stronger SHG signal than that of the state-of-the-art AgGaS 2 standard but also demonstrate an LDT response of 2.3–2.5 times higher than that of AgGaS 2 (at 1.09 μm laser with a pulse width of 10 ns)-which is unprecedented for small band gap semiconductors.

Layered and Low-Dimensional Lead, Silver, and Bismuth Halide Perovskites Directed by Halogen-Substituted Spacer Cations

Hybrid organic–inorganic metal halides provide a diverse parameter space in which the optoelectronic properties can be tuned through the composition. The compositional tunability extends to the metal site, which can be expanded from single valent metals (e.g., Pb 2+ ) to multivalent metals (e.g., Ag + and Bi 3+ ), and the dimension (2D, 1D, or 0D). However, a deeper understanding of how the organic cations template these metal halide structures is needed. Here, we synthesize and study the structures of a series of new layered and low-dimensional metal (Pb, Ag, and Bi) halides templated by the halogenated aryl spacer cations 2-chlorobenzylammonium (2ClBZ) and 3-chloro-2-fluorobenzylammonium (3Cl2FBZ). We report new lead perovskites, (3Cl2FBZ) 2 PbBr 4 , (2ClBZ) 3 PbI 5 , and (3Cl2FBZ) 2 PbI 4 , and compare them to their silver and/or bismuth analogs (2ClBZ) 4 AgBiBr 8 , (3Cl2FBZ) 4 AgBiBr 8 , (2ClBZ) 3 Bi 2 I 9 , and (3Cl2FBZ) 4 Bi 2 I 10 . In all structures, the halogen-substituted cations result in 2D or “pseudo-2D” layering, but the different halogen substituents introduce different distortions (tilting, octahedral distortion) and dimensional reduction to 1D or 0D depending on the metal and halide compositions. Optical absorption measurements reveal the bandgaps are tunable through metal sites, dimension, and cations to different extents. Furthermore, the 1D (3Cl2FBZ) 4 Bi 2 I 10 crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric space group Cmc2 1 and exhibits second-harmonic generation (SHG). Furthermore, the organic–inorganic interactions and resultant structural distortions examined here provide insights toward the engineering of noncentrosymmetry and dimensional control in hybrid metal halide perovskites.
