Capabilities of a single scan TV-radiographic system for digital data acquisition.

A single scan TV-radiography system capable of providing analogue signals ready for A-D conversion for input to a computer has been investigated. Modulation transfer functions of both horizontal and vertical resolution have been obtained. The capability for gray scale reproduction was also investigated. The output data rate of the system is 16 KHz thereby providing compatibility to A-D converters generally available for most computers. In general, the capability of the system was found to exceed the input capabilities of available image-amplifiers and is therefore acceptable for quantitative fluoroscopic applications.

Radiographic detection of cracks

Procedure utilizing x-ray radiography techniques can detect material cracks as small as 20% of material thickness, with 90% probability and 95% confidence if proper imaging procedures and criteria for selecting qualified inspectors are followed.

Neutron radiographic testing for hydrogen embrittlement

Neutron radiography (N-ray) inspection is similar to X-ray inspection in that both depend on variations in attenuation to achieve object contrast. However, effectiveness of methods differs significantly when certain combinations of elements are examined. Mass attenuation coefficient for N-rays is function of both scattering and capture possibilities for each element; thus, density of thickness of material is less important in determining its transparency to neutrons.

Radiographic and ultrasonic characterization of sintered silicon carbide

The capabilities were investigated of projection microfocus X-radiography, ultrasonic velocity and attenuation, and reflection scanning acoustic microscopy for characterizing silicon carbide specimens. Silicon carbide batches covered a range of densities and different microstructural characteristics. Room temperature, four point flexural strength tests were conducted. Fractography was used to identify types, sizes, and locations of fracture origins. Fracture toughness values were calculated from fracture strength and flaw characterization data. Detection capabilities of radiography and acoustic microscopy for fracture-causing flaws were evaluated. Applicability of ultrasonics for verifying material strength and toughness was examined.

Characterization of the Bridgman crystal growth process by radiographic imaging

Elemental (Ge) and alloy (PbSnTe) crystal growth that is monitored via radiography to reveal both the interface position and the shape in real time is discussed for both seeded and unseeded growth. It is concluded that the interface position and the actual growth rate of a Bridgman grown crystal is dependent on the growth conditions. The actual growth rate which is a strong function of the degree of supercooling exceeded the pull rate by a factor of greater than two. The interface shape changed from concave to flat to convex during the growth.

Radiographic Moire

A method for the x-ray inspection of materials making use of the Moire effect is described. The Moire effect results when two patterns are superimposed; a third pattern is produced. Any change in either of the first two patterns creates a change in the third. Moire inspection is common with visible light. This invention allows the technique to be extended to locations inaccessible to visual inspection. A first pattern of high radio contrast material is attached to or included in the sample. X-rays are projected through the sample. A second pattern is imposed at the observation point, either before or after the formation of the x-ray image. The two patterns interact to create a third, Moire, pattern. As the material is stressed the Moire pattern changes, the degree of change indicating the degree of stress.

Multiwire Gamma Camera for Radionuclide and Radiographic Imaging in the Space environment

Unique multiwire proportional counter technology has been developed at the Johnson Space Center over the past several years. The technology will be described and how it may apply both in near- and long-term NASA efforts. In the near-term, I feel that the technology will provide a significant tool for the cardiovascular research area. In particular, low-dose nuclear medicine and tissue densitometry techniques of expanded scope will be supplied. In the longer term, the multiwire technique can provide a general purpose radiology and nuclear medicine facility for use in the space station which would be difficult and costly to provide by other means.

X-Ray Radiographic Observation of Directional Solidification Under Microgravity: XRMON-GF Experiments on MASER12 Sounding Rocket Mission

The European Space Agency (ESA) - Microgravity Application Promotion (MAP) programme entitled XRMON (In situ X-Ray MONitoring of advanced metallurgical processes under microgravity and terrestrial conditions) aims to develop and perform in situ X-ray radiography observations of metallurgical processes in microgravity and terrestrial environments. The use of X-ray imaging methods makes it possible to study alloy solidification processes with spatio-temporal resolutions at the scales of relevance for microstructure formation. XRMON has been selected for MASER 12 sounding rocket experiment, scheduled in autumn 2011. Although the microgravity duration is typically six minutes, this short time is sufficient to investigate a solidification experiment with X-ray radiography. This communication will report on the preliminary results obtained with the experimental set-up developed by SSC (Swedish Space Corporation). Presented results dealing with directional solidification of Al-Cu confirm the great interest of performing in situ characterization to analyse dynamical phenomena during solidification processes.
