The Need for Intelligent Control of Space Power Systems

As manned spacecraft venture farther from Earth, the need for reliable, autonomous control of vehicle subsystems becomes critical. This is particularly true for the electrical power system which is critical to every other system. Autonomy can not be achieved by simple scripting techniques due to the communication latency times and the difficulty associated with failures (or combinations of failures) that need to be handled in as graceful a manner as possible to ensure system availability. Therefore an intelligent control system must be developed that can respond to disturbances and failures in a robust manner and ensure that critical system loads are served and all system constraints are respected.

DC-Saturated Continuously Variable Series Reactors (CVSRs) for Power Flow Control in Power Transmission Systems

This paper proposes a novel continuously variable series reactor (CVSR) based on a dc current controller (DCC) to manage power flow in transmission systems. There are three major contributions. First, the three-dimensional electromagnetic interaction has been comprehensively analyzed to extend the understanding beyond the conventional 2D relationship. Second, a high-fidelity reluctance model of the CVSR with an improved DCC model is proposed and implemented. To overcome the fundamental concern for the system modeling, the DCC has been modeled as an ideal current source in parallel with an output impedance. Additionally, the induced back-EMF can be precisely projected which provides critical design guidelines for the DCC. Third, inspired by the theoretical analysis and modeling, a reliable high power DCC converter is designed accordingly to interface with kV-level back-EMF and supply kA-level dc current for a 115 kV/1500 A CVSR. Experiments are conducted in a practical transmission demonstration system. When the ac current in the transmission system varies from zero to 1500 A, experimental results show that the proposed CVSR can continuously regulate the reactance from 1.6 Ω to 5 Ω, validating the effectiveness of the proposed system design and modeling methodology.

Sensitivity and Importance Measure Analyses for Various Design Architectures for High Safety-Significant Safety-Related Digital Instrumentation and Control Systems of Nuclear Power Plants

A transition from analog instrumentation and control (I&C) technologies to digital I&C technologies is taking place for license renewals of existing nuclear power plants and for operating licenses of new advanced reactors. This transition necessitates research on risk and economic assessments of digital I&C technologies to ensure the long-term safety and reliability of vital systems, reduce uncertainty in licensing costs in addition to timeline, support integration of digital I&C systems in the plant, and find the most efficient technology upgrades. Adding redundancy within systems or components is a common means of improving design safety; however, it can also make designs more prone to common-cause failures (CCFs). Introducing diversity into redundant systems or components is a way to mitigate and possibly eliminate CCFs, but it also increases plant complexity and may be costly. The balance between redundancy and diversity remains a challenge for digital I&C systems. This study performs sensitivity and importance analyses for four design architectures of two digital I&C systems—the reactor-trip system and the engineered safety features actuation system. For each system, two architectures are examined, including a redundant, non-diverse configuration and a redundant, diverse configuration. The sensitivity analysis will provide insights on the impact of introducing diversity to system reliability. The importance results will help identify risk-significant and risk-sensitive components and failure modes, which may be good candidates for future design improvement.

Deep-Learning-Based Koopman Modeling for Online Control Synthesis of Nonlinear Power System Transient Dynamics

Power system stability and control have become more challenging due to the increasing uncertainty associated with renewable generation. Here, the performance of conventional control is highly driven by the physics-based offline-developed dynamic models that can deviate from the actual system characteristics under different operating conditions and/or configurations. Data-driven approaches based on online measurements can be a better solution to addressing these issues by capturing real-time operation conditions. This article describes a novel fully data-driven probabilistic framework to derive a linear representation of postcontingency grid dynamics and online prescribe control based on the derived model to enhance transient stability. The complex nonlinear power system dynamics is approximated by a linear model by using multiple neural network modules that infer distributions of the observations and introducing a Koopman layer to sample possible Koopman linear models from the inferred distributions. The trained model features linearity that can be easily incorporated into the existing linear control design paradigm and ease the controller design process. The effectiveness of Koopman-based control designs is validated through comparative case studies, which demonstrate increased prediction accuracy and control performance when applied to a power system with heterogeneous generator dynamics.

Precise time dissemination and applications development on the Bonneville Power Administration system

The Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) uses IRIG-B transmitted over microwave as its primary system time dissemination. Problems with accuracy and reliability have led to ongoing research into better methods. BPA has also developed and deployed a unique fault locator which uses precise clocks synchronized by a pulse over microwaves. It automatically transmits the data to a central computer for analysis. A proposed system could combine fault location timing and time dissemination into a Global Position System (GPS) timing receiver and close the verification loop through a master station at the Dittmer Control Center. Such a system would have many advantages, including lower cost, higher reliability, and wider industry support. Test results indicate the GPS has sufficient accuracy and reliability for this and other current timing requirements including synchronous phase angle measurements. A phasor measurement system which provides phase angle has recently been tested with excellent results. Phase angle is a key parameter in power system control applications including dynamic braking, DC modulation, remedial action schemes, and system state estimation. Further research is required to determine the applications which can most effectively use real-time phase angle measurements and the best method to apply them.

SiC Based Modular Transformer-less MW-Scale Power Conditioning System and Control for Flexible CHP System

This project aims at developing a SiC-based, modular, transformer-less (60-Hz-transformers-free), MW-scale, four-wire DC/AC power conditioning system (PCS) converter, and a corresponding control system for flexible-CHP (F-CHP) systems. With the help of an F-CHP controller and power electronics converters, different CHP sources, renewable sources, and batteries can be assembled to the DC grid, which is then connected to the medium voltage (MV) AC grid through the PCS converter. To meet grid support and performance requirements, the F-CHP controller design and PCS converter design follow IEEE 1547 and IEEE 2030.7 standards. Five main tasks, including PCS converter design, F-CHP controller development, PCS converter prototype building and testing, F-CHP controller testing, and PCS paralleling, have been carried out. In this project, the F-CHP controller testing has been completed in simulation, HIL and HTB, and the PCS converter prototypes have been successfully built and tested.

Thermal monitoring, measurement, and control system for a Volatile Condensable Materials (VCM) test apparatus

A thermal monitoring and control concept is described for a volatile condensable materials (VCM) test apparatus where electric resistance heaters are employed. The technique is computer based, but requires only proportioning ON/OFF relay control signals supplied through a programmable scanner and simple quadrac power controllers. System uniqueness is derived from automatic temperature measurements and the averaging of these measurements in discrete overlapping temperature zones. Overall control tolerance proves to be better than + or - 0.5 C from room ambient temperature to 150 C. Using precisely calibrated thermocouples, the method provides excellent temperature control of a small copper VCM heating plate at 125 + or - 0.2 C over a 24 hr test period. For purposes of unattended operation, the programmable computer/controller provides a continual data printout of system operation. Real time operator command is also provided for, as is automatic shutdown of the system and operator alarm in the event of malfunction.

Intelligent Systems Approach for Automated Identification of Individual Control Behavior of a Human Operator

Results have been obtained using conventional techniques to model the generic human operator?s control behavior, however little research has been done to identify an individual based on control behavior. The hypothesis investigated is that different operators exhibit different control behavior when performing a given control task. Two enhancements to existing human operator models, which allow personalization of the modeled control behavior, are presented. One enhancement accounts for the testing control signals, which are introduced by an operator for more accurate control of the system and/or to adjust the control strategy. This uses the Artificial Neural Network which can be fine-tuned to model the testing control. Another enhancement takes the form of an equiripple filter which conditions the control system power spectrum. A novel automated parameter identification technique was developed to facilitate the identification process of the parameters of the selected models. This utilizes a Genetic Algorithm based optimization engine called the Bit-Climbing Algorithm. Enhancements were validated using experimental data obtained from three different sources: the Manual Control Laboratory software experiments, Unmanned Aerial Vehicle simulation, and NASA Langley Research Center Visual Motion Simulator studies. This manuscript also addresses applying human operator models to evaluate the effectiveness of motion feedback when simulating actual pilot control behavior in a flight simulator.

Integrated Power and Attitude Control System (IPACS)

Recent advances in materials, circuit integration and power switching have given the concept of dynamic energy and momentum storage important weight size, and operational advantages over the conventional momentum wheel-battery configuration. Simultaneous momentum and energy storage for a three axes stabilized spacecraft can be accomplished with a topology of at least four wheels where energy (a scalar) is stored or retrieved in such a manner as to keep the momentum vector invariant. This study, instead, considers the case of two counter-rotating wheels in one axis to more effectively portray the principles involved. General scalable system design equations are derived which demonstrate the role of momentum storage when combined with energy storage.

Correlation-Aided Robust Decentralized Dynamic State Estimation of Power Systems with Unknown Control Inputs

This paper proposes a correlation-aided robust adaptive unscented Kalman filter for power system decentralized dynamic state estimation with unknown inputs, termed as robust AUKF-UI. The temporal and spatial correlations among the unknown inputs are used to derive a vector auto-regressive (VAR) model in an adaptive manner. This VAR model is further integrated together with state transition and measurement models for joint state and unknown inputs estimation. This allows taking into account the implicit cross-correlations between the states and the unknown inputs. As a result, the rank requirement for unknown input vector estimation is relaxed and the local generator frequency measurement is not required. The temporal correlations of time series innovation vectors, predicted state and input vectors are also leveraged by the robust AUKFUI to detect, identify and process bad data. Without these correlations, it is very challenging to address bad data with unknown inputs. Simulation results carried out on the IEEE 39-bus system demonstrate that the proposed robust AUKF-UI achieves much better results than other methods in the presence of low measurement redundancy, strong nonlinearity, and bad data.

Network Reconfiguration for Enhanced Operational Resilience Using Reinforcement Learning

This paper proposes a reinforcement learning-based approach for distribution network reconfiguration(DNR) to enhance the resilience of the electric power supply. Resilience enhancements usually require solving large-scale stochastic optimization problems that are computationally expensive and sometimes infeasible. The exceptional performance of reinforcement learning techniques has encouraged their adoption in various power system control studies, specifically resilience-based real-time applications. In this paper, a single agent framework is developed using an Actor-Critic algorithm (ACA) to determine statuses of tie-switches in a distribution feeder impacted by an extreme weather event. The proposed approach provides a fast-acting control algorithm that reconfigures the feeder topology to reduce or even avoid load shedding. The problem is formulated as a discrete Markov decision process in such a way that a system state captures the system topology and its operational characteristics. An action is made to open or close a specific set of tie-switches after which a reward is calculated to evaluate the practicality and advantage of that action. The iterative Markov process is used to train the proposed ACA under diverse failure scenarios and is demonstrated on the 33-node distribution feeder system. Results show the capability of the proposed ACA to determine proper switching action of tie-switches with accuracy exceeding 93%.

A Randomization-Based, Zero-Trust Cyberattack Detection Method for Hierarchical Systems

This paper demonstrates a novel randomization-based approach for verifying power system control signals with application to detecting cyberattacks. We consider fully connected hierarchical systems containing multiple local agents and a global "trust" agent. The global agent uses a time-varying randomized assignment scheme to identify corrupt network links based on principles of zero trust and majority rule. To evaluate the performance of this detection approach, we implement our algorithm in MATLAB and run it against nearly 43 million unique attack scenarios spanning a range of system sizes. For each scenario, the algorithm determines whether the identified corruptions satisfy a set of validity constraints reflecting network topology and uses that result to say whether the recovered state value for one or more local agents is malicious. We compare the algorithm's determination to the true state of the system to assess performance and find that classification accuracy converges to 100% as system size increases, suggesting that the validity constraints become more difficult to satisfy for larger systems. We further explore the scenarios that evade detection to understand practical implications for employing this detection approach.
