Ball transfer mechanism with polycrystalline diamond bearing support

A ball transfer mechanism for a harmonic drive and linear piston motor is disclosed. The ball transfer mechanism includes a spherical ball and a cylindrical seat portion. The seat portion defines a hemispherical shaped recess with a contour for receiving the ball. The ball transfer mechanism is in an exterior wall of a housing for converting rotary motion to linear motion, driving a linear piston motor. Transfer mechanisms disposed along a housing wall of the linear piston motor engage the coupler portion. The coupler portion includes harmonic cam grooves for receiving spherical balls in the ball transfer mechanism that drives rotational motion in the rotor in response to axially linear movement of the piston assembly.

Simultaneous treatment of SO2 containing stack gases and waste water

A process for simultaneously removing sulfur dioxide from stack gases and the like and purifying waste water such as derived from domestic sewage is described. A portion of the gas stream and a portion of the waste water, the latter containing dissolved iron and having an acidic pH, are contacted in a closed loop gas-liquid scrubbing zone to effect absorption of the sulfur dioxide into the waste water. A second portion of the gas stream and a second portion of the waste water are controlled in an open loop gas-liquid scrubbing zone. The second portion of the waste water contains a lesser amount of iron than the first portion of the waste water. Contacting in the openloop scrubbing zone is sufficient to acidify the waste water which is then treated to remove solids originally present.

Method and apparatus for holding two separate metal pieces together for welding

A method of holding two separate metal pieces together for welding is described including the steps of overlapping a portion of one of the metal pieces on a portion of the other metal piece, encasing the overlapping metal piece in a compressible device, drawing the compressible device into an enclosure, and compressing a portion of the compressible device around the overlapping portions of the metal pieces for holding the metal pieces under constant and equal pressure during welding. The preferred apparatus for performing the method utilizes a support mechanism to support the two separate metal pieces in an overlapping configuration; a compressible device surrounding the support mechanism and at least one of the metal pieces, and a compressing device surrounding the compressible device for compressing the compressible device around the overlapping portions of the metal pieces, thus providing constant and equal pressure at all points on the overlapping portions of the metal pieces.

Adaptive control of space based robot manipulators

For space based robots in which the base is free to move, motion planning and control is complicated by uncertainties in the inertial properties of the manipulator and its load. A new adaptive control method is presented for space based robots which achieves globally stable trajectory tracking in the presence of uncertainties in the inertial parameters of the system. A partition is made of the fifteen degree of freedom system dynamics into two parts: a nine degree of freedom invertible portion and a six degree of freedom noninvertible portion. The controller is then designed to achieve trajectory tracking of the invertible portion of the system. This portion consist of the manipulator joint positions and the orientation of the base. The motion of the noninvertible portion is bounded, but unpredictable. This portion consist of the position of the robot's base and the position of the reaction wheel.

Low conducting metal screen support flange

In a very high or very low temperature duct system in which duct insulation is terminated at selected locations so as to be not coextensive with the duct, an annular metal perforated or mesh screen support flange is used, as a low conductor of heat or cold, between the duct and an outer insulation cover to retain the end of the insulation and to support its usually very thin cover. The screen may be Z-shaped in cross section having a small diameter annular portion to surround and be secured to the duct adjacent the end of the insulation. A generally radially extending portion of the screen extends outwardly from the small diameter portion and adjacent the end of the insulation. A large diameter annular portion of the screen extends longitudinally from the periphery in the direction opposite the small diameter portion, and is adapted to surround the insulation and its cover and be secured thereto. The screen may also be U or channel-shaped with one longitudinally directed leg secured to the insulation cover and the other leg secured to the duct under the insulation.
