NWTC Site 4.0 - NREL ASSIST (SN10) / Thermodynamic retrievals TROPoe

This dataset contains daily files with thermodynamic profiles retrieved with the optimal estimation physical retrieval TROPoe v0.12 (Turner and Löhnert 2014; Turner and Blumberg 2019; Turner and Löhnert 2021). The profiles are retrieved every 10 minutes from instantaneous observations from the NREL ASSIST-II (SN 10) infrared spectrometer. Observations are noise-filtered but not averaged in time to minimize errors due to non-uniform clouds. Additional input data in TROPoe are cloud base height from a Vaisala CL51 ceilometer. The full pipeline for running the retrieval is available at https://github.com/StefanoWind/TROPoe_processor. Met data were not ingested. In addition to these temporally resolved input data, TROPoe requires an a priori dataset (prior) that provides mean climatological estimates of thermodynamic profiles and specifies how temperature and humidity covary with height as an input (for details see, e.g., Djalalova et al. 2022). The prior is a key component of the retrieval and provides a constraint on the ill-posed inversion problem. A monthly prior was computed from operational radiosonde launches at Denver, CO.

Variational Quantum Circuits to Prepare Low Energy Symmetry States

We explore how to build quantum circuits that compute the lowest energy state corresponding to a given Hamiltonian within a symmetry subspace by explicitly encoding it into the circuit. We create an explicit unitary and a variationally trained unitary that maps any vector output by ansatz A(α → ) from a defined subspace to a vector in the symmetry space. The parameters are trained varitionally to minimize the energy, thus keeping the output within the labelled symmetry value. The method was tested for a spin XXZ Hamiltonian using rotation and reflection symmetry and H 2 Hamiltonian within S z = 0 subspace using S 2 symmetry. We have found the variationally trained unitary gives good results with very low depth circuits and can thus be used to prepare symmetry states within near term quantum computers.

Optimization of Rei-mullite Physical Properties

Micromechanical and thermal modeling studies prove that ceramic fiber mullite materials is the only system capable of shuttle thermal protection to 1644 K. Hafnia pigmentated mullite surface coatings meet both orbital and reentry thermal radiative requirements for reuse without refurbishment. Thermal and mechanical models show growths potentials associated with the mullite system for a factor of 2 improvement in mechanical properties, and a factor of 2 to 3 reduction in thermal conductivity.

Evaluation of results of cell electrophoresis experiments on space shuttle STS-3 including pre-flight and post-flight laboratory experiments

The objectives of the red blood cell experiments were to provide a visual check on the electrophoretic process and especially electroosmotic flow in space as well as to provide test separations of non-degradable standard particles for comparison with the separations of the three viable cell types studied on the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project. Determination of the maximum concentrations of cells that can be separated in column electrophore was a significant goal. Two of the eight columns were available for red cell experiments, so two concentrations of human and rabbit RBC mixtures were used. The objectives of another experiment were to evaluate the reproducibility of microgravity electrophoretic separation of living kidney cells, to separate cells with highly viability despite two freeze-thaw cycles, and to optimize the physical conditions of cell separation. Owing to the uncertain heterogeneity of the starting material, the experimental design does not assess resolution in microgravity, but improved separability was sought in comparison to density-gradient electrophoresis or continuous-flow electrophoresis. Efforts were made to increase cell yield and cell viability and to assess reproducibility directly.

Physical insight into the simultaneous optimization of structure and control

Recent trends in spacecraft design which yield larger structures with more stringent performance requirements place many flexible modes of the structure within the bandwidth of active controllers. The resulting complications to the spacecraft design make it highly desirable to understand the impact of structural changes on an optimally controlled structure. This work uses low structural models with optimal H(sub 2) and H(sub infinity) controllers to develop some basic insight into this problem. This insight concentrates on several basic approaches to improving controlled performance and how these approaches interact in determining the optimal designs. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate how this insight can be generalized to more complex problems.

Guidelines for Developing Spacecraft Structural Requirements: A Thermal and Environmental Perspective

Spacecraft are typically designed with a primary focus on weight in order to meet launch vehicle performance parameters. However, for pressurized and/or man-rated spacecraft, it is also necessary to have an understanding of the vehicle operating environments to properly size the pressure vessel. Proper sizing of the pressure vessel requires an understanding of the space vehicle's life cycle and compares the physical design optimization (weight and launch "cost") to downstream operational complexity and total life cycle cost. This paper will provide an overview of some major environmental design drivers and provide examples for calculating the optimal design pressure versus a selected set of design parameters related to thermal and environmental perspectives. In addition, this paper will provide a generic set of cracking pressures for both positive and negative pressure relief valves that encompasses worst case environmental effects for a variety of launch / landing sites. Finally, several examples are included to highlight pressure relief set points and vehicle weight impacts for a selected set of orbital missions.
