Nonlinear Loss Engineering in Near‐Zero‐Index Bulk Materials

Transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) show unprecedented optical nonlinearities in the near infrared wavelength range, where the real part of their linear refractive index approaches zero. More specifically, the Kerr nonlinearities of these materials have sparked widespread attention due to their magnitude and speed. However, due to the absorptive nature of these nonlinear processes, it is of fundamental interest to further investigate the imaginary component of the nonlinear index. The present work studies the nonlinear optical absorption properties of aluminium‐doped zinc oxide (AZO) thin films in their near‐zero‐index (NZI) spectral window. It is found that the imaginary part of the refractive index is reduced under optical excitation such that the field penetration depth more than doubles. An optically induced shift of the NZI bandwidth of ≈120 nm for a pump intensity of 1.3 TW cm −2 is also demonstrated. Looking into the optically induced spectral redistribution of the probe signal, local net gain is recorded, which is ascribed to a nonlinear adiabatic energy transfer. The present study adds key information about the fundamental interplay between real and imaginary nonlinear indices in NZI media, while advancing parametric amplification as viable direction for loss compensation.

Full complex amplitude control of second-harmonic generation via electrically tunable intersubband polaritonic metasurfaces

Nonlinear intersubband polaritonic metasurfaces based on coupling of the intersubband nonlinear optical response of quantum-engineered semiconductor heterostructures and electromagnetic modes of nanoresonators provide efficient frequency mixing with moderate pump intensities. The resonant nonlinear optical response, represented as a complex function, can be modulated via Stark tuning of intersubband transition energies under applied voltages. However, achieving full complex amplitude control (both phase and magnitude) remains challenging. In this work, we present and experimentally validate electrically tunable nonlinear intersubband polaritonic metasurfaces that achieve complete complex amplitude control for second-harmonic generation (SHG). Through a design featuring two in-plane flipped meta-atoms per unit cell, we achieve complete electrical control of both the amplitude and phase of the metasurface second-order nonlinear susceptibility, with a tuning range of 0 to 30 nm V −1 for the magnitude and 0-2π for the phase of the nonlinear optical response. Using these properties, we achieve complete on-off SHG modulation and beam diffraction tuning through electrically controlled amplitude and phase gratings.

Deterministic modeling of hybrid nonlinear effects in epsilon-near-zero thin films

In nonlinear optics, significant effort is concentrated on improving the strength and efficiency of interactions; however, experimentally investigating nonlinear materials is a complex, time-consuming, and costly investment. Moreover, it is often challenging to isolate, study, and optimize material parameters in an experiment due to complexities in the growth process. Recently, epsilon-near-zero materials have received a great deal of attention as promising nonlinear optical materials, but like many up-and-coming materials, the ability to explore and optimize their properties has been challenging. Here, we establish a framework to rapidly evaluate the performance of nonlinear epsilon-near-zero materials for both inter- and intraband effects in silico, requiring only an energy-momentum (E-k) diagram, linear optical properties, and experimental conditions. Measured nonlinear reflection and transmission in gallium-doped zinc oxide films are compared to the numerical framework for both intra- and interband excitation to verify accuracy across wavelength and irradiance while two figures of merit (FoMs) are introduced to quickly evaluate the performance of films without a full numerical framework. This capability is used to predict the performance of highly doped gallium nitride, cadmium oxide, zinc oxide, and indium tin oxide films, and efficient intra- and interband operation conditions are identified. Through this numerical framework and the FoMs, the exploration of unstudied epsilon-near-zero materials is enabled without the need for a nonlinear experiment, thereby accelerating the search for more efficient nonlinear materials and excitation conditions.

Strong-field Driven Sub-cycle Band Structure Modulation and Dephasing Control

In this work, we present measurements of ultrafast electric-field observables in magnesium oxide using a non-resonant nonlinear optical interaction. Using field observables, we show that strong laser fields modulate the band structure on sub-cycle timescales, thereby altering the material’s nonlinear optical response. We perform time-dependent perturbation theory calculations using a field-dependent dispersion relation and semiconductor Bloch equation calculations, both of which agree with experimental observations. Furthermore, we extract pulse decay times from the real-time signal electric field envelope and show sub-cycle control of dephasing times. Our work offers a new perspective on strong-field-driven electron dynamics in solids through electric-field observables. The demonstrated attosecond modulation of the nonlinear response could have important implications for quantum light generation and quantum spectroscopy using nonlinear optical processes.

Large Non‐Resonant Infrared Optical Second Harmonic Generation in Bulk Crystals of Van der Waals Semiconductor, SnP 2 Se 6

2D van der Waals (vdW) materials have emerged as a highly promising candidates for nonlinear optical (NLO) applications. This study presents the synthesis, comprehensive linear optical, and optical second harmonic generation (SHG) characterization of a novel 2D vdW semiconductor SnP2Se6 in its bulk single crystal form. It exhibits an indirect bandgap of ≈1.47 eV and an exceptional non-resonant SHG coefficient of d 33 ∼ −222 ± 30 pm V −1 at a fundamental wavelength of 2 µm, which is ≈7 times larger than that of the commercial AgGaSe 2 with a comparable bandgap. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the linear and nonlinear optical properties exhibit reasonable agreement with the experimental measurements, revealing the chemical origin of the enhanced properties. Moreover, SnP 2 Se 6 can exhibit both type-I and type-II phase matching over a wide spectral range, fulfilling one of the key criteria for an ideal NLO crystal. These exceptional properties position SnP 2 Se 6 as a highly promising candidate for NLO applications.

EXPERIMENTAL STUDIES OF NONLINEAR INTEGRABLE OPTICS

State-of-the-art accelerators at energy and intensity frontiers require increasingly bright and powerful particle beams. In conventional linear lattices, intense beams suffer from collective instabilities, resulting in beam losses and maximum beam intensity limits. This thesis presents experimental studies of a novel lattice design concept, the nonlinear integrable optics (NIO), aimed at enhancing beam stability limits with little to no beam dynamics degradation. Single-particle beam dynamics measurements of two NIO devices, the quasi-integrable octupole system and the fully integrable Danilov-Nagaitsev system, were carried out at the purpose-built Integrable Optics Test Accelerator (IOTA) at Fermilab. Their simulation, hardware design, and commissioning process are presented. Extensive model and analysis algorithm development and benchmarking is described. Electron beam data from two scientific runs is analyzed, yielding frequency and phase space dynamics consisten t with m odels. These results demonstrate viability and advantages of the NIO design, providing the groundwork for proton studies in the strong space-charge regime and future integrable accelerators.

Measurement of the angular dependence of the spontaneous Raman scattering in anisotropic crystalline materials using spherical samples: Potassium dihydrogen phosphate as a case example

A specialized experimental configuration was created to allow for more-accurate characterization of the spontaneous Raman scattering properties in anisotropic materials. This need stems from the challenges, arising from the complexity of light propagation, in obtaining accurate measurements of the angular dependence of the Raman scattering cross section in birefringent materials. The nonlinear optical material KH 2 PO 4 (KDP) is used as a model medium. Our report is motivated by the need to improve our understanding and management of transverse stimulated Raman scattering in KDP crystals and its deuterated analog, DKDP, typically used for frequency conversion and polarization control in large-aperture laser systems. Key to this experimental platform is the use of high-quality spherical samples that enable one to measure the Raman scattering cross section in a wide range of geometries using only a single sample. The effect of polarization rotation of both the pump light and the collected Raman signal must be carefully considered in data analysis and can give rise to artifacts, which can, in part, be mitigated by reducing the input and collection cone angles.

Revisiting two thiophosphate compounds constituting d 0 transition metal HfP 2 S 6 and d 10 transition metal α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 as multifunctional materials for combining second harmonic generation response and photocurrent response

Two acentric thiophosphate compounds, HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 , are revisited and studied as infrared nonlinear optical materials. HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 were structurally characterized without any property measurements. Here, in this work, HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 were synthesized via high temperature salt flux reactions. Low-temperature polymorph acentric α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 was purified and grown as mm-sized crystals with the aid of AgBr flux. The AgBr flux was revealed to play an important role in stabilizing the acentric α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 . The acentric α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 transforms to centrosymmetric β-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 at 850(5) K, which is revealed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis and powder X-ray diffraction experiments. HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 are discovered by UV-vis spectrum measurements as indirect bandgap semiconductors with bandgaps of 2.2(1) eV and 2.5(1) eV, respectively, which is supported by DFT calculations and TB-LMTO-ASA calculations. The bonding pictures of α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 were studied by crystal orbital Hamilton population calculations (COHP) coupled with electron localization function (ELF) analysis. DFT calculations predict that HfP 2 S 6 and α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 would exhibit different optical performances regardless of being constructed from identical [P 2 S 6 ] motifs. HfP 2 S 6 exhibits a low second harmonic generation (SHG) response, ~0.21 × AGS (for the sample of particle size of 25 μm). α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 possesses moderate SHG response, ~0.61 × AGS (for the sample of particle size of 225 μm) coupled with a high laser damage threshold (LDT) of ~3.2 × AGS. Characteristics of high ambient stability, moderate bandgap and SHG response, type-I phase-matching capability, and high LDT together with the easy growth of large crystals make α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 attractive for future infrared nonlinear optical applications. Photocurrent measurements found that α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 and β-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 have high photocurrent response, 165 nA cm -2 and 135 nA cm -2 , respectively. α-Ag 4 P 2 S 6 is a new multifunctional material of the ternary Ag–P–S system, which combines nonlinear optical (NLO) properties and photocurrent response.

Spatiotemporal control of laser intensity using differentiable programming

Optical techniques for spatiotemporal control can produce laser pulses with custom amplitude, phase, or polarization structure. In nonlinear optics and plasma physics, the use of structured pulses typically follows a forward design approach, in which the efficacy of a known structure is analyzed for a particular application. Inverse approaches, in contrast, enable the discovery of new structures with the potential for superior performance. Here, an implementation of the unidirectional pulse propagation equation that supports automatic differentiation is combined with gradient-based optimization to design structured pulses with features that are advantageous for a range of nonlinear optical and plasma-based applications: (1) a longitudinally uniform intensity over an extended region, (2) a superluminal intensity peak that travels many Rayleigh ranges with constant duration, spot size, and amplitude, and (3) a laser pulse that ionizes a gas to form a uniform column of plasma. In the final case, optimizing the full spatiotemporal structure improves the performance by a factor of 15 compared to optimizing only spatial or only temporal structure, highlighting the advantage of spatiotemporal control.

Perspective on Some Recent and Future Developments in Casimir Interactions

Here, we present a critical review of recent developments in Casimir physics motivated by discoveries of novel materials. Specifically, topologically nontrivial properties of the graphene family, Chern and topological insulators, and Weyl semimetals have diverse manifestations in the distance dependence, presence of fundamental constants, magnitude, and sign of the Casimir interaction. Limited studies of the role of nonlinear optical properties in the interaction are also reviewed. We show that, since many new materials have greatly enhanced the nonlinear optical response, new efficient pathways for investigation of the characteristic regimes of the Casimir force need to be explored, which are expected to lead to new discoveries. Recent progress in the dynamical Casimir effect is also reviewed and we argue that nonlinear media can open up new directions in this field as well.

Hybrid Bismuth Halide with Rich Polymorphism and Second Harmonic Generation Response

Hybrid structures have emerged as a promising class of optical materials, due to their ability to couple the robustness of inorganic and the tunability of organic compounds. However, their application in nonlinear optics (NLO) remains limited, largely due to underexplored factors that drive the formation of noncentrosymmetric structures and NLO property characterization. In this work, we explore the formation, structural and temperature polymorphism, and optical properties of the (Et 3 NH) 3 Bi 2 Br 9 composition, which crystallizes as either noncentrosymmetric or centrosymmetric polymorph. Structural analysis showed that the alignment of [Bi 2 Br 9 ] 3– units dictates the symmetry of phases, as well as the nonlinear optical properties, with the triclinic polymorph exhibiting a second harmonic generation (SHG) response both in visible and IR regions (1.29 × KH 2 PO 4 and 0.08 × AgGaS 2 ). Thermal analysis reveals polymorphic phase transitions and low melting points, making them melt-processable and ionic liquid candidates.

Robust multiresonant nonlocal metasurfaces by rational design

Abstract Dielectric metasurfaces supporting optical resonances have become a promising platform for quantum and nonlinear optics. However, resonant metasurfaces remain limited in their capacity to independently control the behavior of many distinct resonances despite efforts in computational optimization and inverse design. In this work, we overcome longstanding limitations by introducing a generalized rational design paradigm based on symmetry. Specifically, we use symmetry-broken metasurfaces with periodic “quadromer” lattices comprised of four nanostructures per unit cell to enable extensive control of multiple optical resonances. The rationally designed metasurfaces are readily fabricable, and we experimentally demonstrate metasurfaces that support up to four high Q-factor resonances with deliberately chosen free-space polarizations, spectral separations, and mode profiles. Our design paradigm may unlock new applications for multiresonant metasurfaces in quantum and nonlinear optics, optical sensing, and augmented reality displays.

Comprehensive anisotropic linear optical properties of the Weyl semimetals TaAs and NbAs

We report that TaAs and NbAs are two of the earliest identified Weyl semimetals that possess many intriguing optical properties, such as chirality-dependent optical excitations and giant second harmonic generation (SHG). Linear and nonlinear optics have been employed as tools to probe the Weyl physics in these crystals. Here, we extend these studies to address two important aspects: determining the complete anisotropic dielectric response and exploring if and how they can reveal essential Weyl physics. We determine the complete anisotropic dielectric functions of TaAs and NbAs by combining spectroscopic ellipsometry and density functional theory (DFT). Parameterized Lorentz oscillators are reported from 1.2 - 6 eV (experiment) and 0 - 6 eV (DFT), and good agreement is shown between them. Both linear and nonlinear optical properties have been previously reported to reveal Weyl physics. We suggest that strong optical resonances from trivial bands are the likely origin of the large optical SHG previously reported at these energies. Furthermore, by comparing the contribution of a small k -space centered around the Weyl cones with the total linear dielectric function, we find that these contributions are highly anisotropic and are < 25% of the total dielectric function below 0.5 eV; abov1 eV, these contributions are negligible. Thus, the study of Weyl physics using optical techniques requires very low energies, and even there, a careful assessment is required in distinguishing the much smaller contributions of the Weyl bands from the dominant contributions of the trivial bands and Drude response to the total dielectric function.

Second-harmonic generation tensors from high-throughput density-functional perturbation theory

Optical materials play a key role in enabling modern optoelectronic technologies in a wide variety of domains such as the medical or the energy sector. Among them, nonlinear optical crystals are of primary importance to achieve a broader range of electromagnetic waves in the devices. However, numerous and contradicting requirements significantly limit the discovery of new potential candidates, which, in turn, hinders the technological development. In the present work, the static nonlinear susceptibility and dielectric tensor are computed via density-functional perturbation theory for a set of 579 inorganic semiconductors. The computational methodology is discussed and the provided database is described with respect to both its data distribution and its format. Several comparisons with both experimental and ab initio results from literature allow to confirm the reliability of our data. The aim of this work is to provide a relevant dataset to foster the identification of promising nonlinear optical crystals in order to motivate their subsequent experimental investigation.

All-optical switching of an epsilon-near-zero plasmon resonance in indium tin oxide

Abstract Nonlinear optical devices and their implementation into modern nanophotonic architectures are constrained by their usually moderate nonlinear response. Recently, epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) materials have been found to have a strong optical nonlinearity, which can be enhanced through the use of cavities or nano-structuring. Here, we study the pump dependent properties of the plasmon resonance in the ENZ region in a thin layer of indium tin oxide (ITO). Exciting this mode using the Kretschmann-Raether configuration, we study reflection switching properties of a 60 nm layer close to the resonant plasmon frequency. We demonstrate a thermal switching mechanism, which results in a shift in the plasmon resonance frequency of 20 THz for a TM pump intensity of 70 GW cm −2 . For degenerate pump and probe frequencies, we highlight an additional two-beam coupling contribution, not previously isolated in ENZ nonlinear optics studies, which leads to an overall pump induced change in reflection from 1% to 45%.

Extrinsic Nonlinear Kerr Rotation in Topological Materials under a Magnetic Field

Topological properties in quantum materials are often governed by symmetry and tuned by crystal structure and external fields, and hence, symmetry-sensitive nonlinear optical measurements in a magnetic field are a valuable probe. Here, we report nonlinear magneto-optical second harmonic generation (SHG) studies of nonmagnetic topological materials including bilayer WTe 2 , monolayer WSe 2 , and bulk TaAs. The polarization-resolved patterns of optical SHG under a magnetic field show nonlinear Kerr rotation in these time-reversal symmetric materials. For materials with 3-fold rotational symmetric lattice structure, the SHG polarization pattern rotates just slightly in a magnetic field, whereas in those with mirror or 2-fold rotational symmetry, the SHG polarization pattern rotates greatly and distorts. Further, these different magneto-SHG characters can be understood by considering the superposition of the magnetic field-induced time-noninvariant nonlinear optical tensor and the crystal-structure-based time-invariant counterpart. The situation is further clarified by scrutinizing the Faraday rotation, whose subtle interplay with crystal symmetry accounts for the diverse behavior of the extrinsic nonlinear Kerr rotation in different materials. Our work illustrates the application of magneto-SHG techniques to directly probe nontrivial topological properties, and underlines the importance of minimizing extrinsic nonlinear Kerr rotation in polarization-resolved magneto-optical studies.

Ramifications of X-Site Ion Modification in a Zero-Dimensional Piezoelectric Tetrahalozincate

Using mixtures of A, B, or X site ions in piezoelectric hybrid organic inorganic materials has been shown to be an effective strategy to improve piezoelectric properties. Here, we investigated the effect of increasing Br content within histammonium tetrachlorozincate [HistNH3Zn(Cl x Br 1–x )4] by varying the relative amounts of Cl and Br from x = 0% to 100% on nonlinear optical and piezoelectric properties. We found that the crystal structures were unchanged with Br percentages up to 100%, but the melting point of the materials changed substantially with increasing Br content. On the other hand, the nonlinear optical properties were only moderately affected with increasing Br content. The piezoelectric response of each material was measured and compared with DFT calculated values, both of which agreed that the overall the materials had relatively similar d 33 coefficients. The x = 75% Br compound had the largest magnitude d 33 value at maximum strain at both 29 °C (−97.56 pm/V) and 40 °C (−92.00 pm/V). The observed negative piezoelectric response is a rare trait that was ascribed to the large number of intermolecular interactions between lattice elements, as described by others.
