A Hot-wire Circuit with Very Small Time Lag

A circuit for a hot-wire anemometer for the measurement of fluctuating flow is presented in the present report. The principal elements of the circuit are a Wheatstone bridge, one branch of which is the hot wire; and an electronic amplifier and a current regulator for the brief current which in combination maintain the bridge balance constant. Hence the hot wire is kept at practically constant resistance and temperature, and the time lag caused by thermal inertia of the wire is thereby reduced. Through the addition of a nonlinear amplifying stage the reading of the instrument has been rendered proportional to the velocity. A discussion of certain characteristics of the circuit and the results of related calibrating tests are given.

Impact of K-factor on Short Circuit Program Convergence for Inverter-Based Resources during Faults

Classical short-circuit programs that linearize the power network are no longer applicable for inverter based resources (IBRs), necessitating an iterative approach. Phasor domain programs can model the IBRs using an iterative approach considering nonlinear fault responses. In phasor domain models, the IBR can be modeled as a voltage controlled current source (VCCS) in tabular form with positive, negative, and zero sequence information for balanced and unbalance short-circuit faults. In the VCCS modeling of the IBR, positive and negative incremental reactive current, also known as the k-factor, plays an important role in short circuit program convergence. In this work, a few approaches: conventional VCCS modeling with a k-factor of 2, conventional VCCS modeling with a k-factor of 2 with modified pre-fault voltages, VCCS characteristics based on the power flow solution with a k-factor of 2, and VCCS characteristics based on the power flow solution with a k-factor of 1 are investigated for short circuit program convergence under higher IBR penetration. The IEEE 39 bus New England Test System is taken as the test system, and simulations are carried out in PSS®CAPE 15.0.26 simulation software. Simulation results demonstrate that IBR penetration is higher for the VCCS model, which corresponds to the power flow solution with k-factor 1, compared to other approaches.

DROP DURABILITY ASSESSMENT OF ELECTRONIC ASSEMBLIES UNDER OFF-AXIS LOADING WITH SKEWED FIXTURES

This thesis studies drop durability of electronic assemblies when the acceleration vector is oriented at 45° to the out-of-plane direction of the circuit card. The off-axis drop tests are accomplished with a skewed fixture and are conducted as a proxy for multiaxial drop testing. Advanced shock testing and vibration test methods have been developed over the last few decades to better represent real-world field environments during ground-based laboratory testing. However, many of these test methods require expensive and specialized equipment not available in most laboratories. An alternative approach for approximating simultaneous loading along multiple axes on conventional equipment utilizes skewed fixtures which have seen use in off-axis random vibration and drop impact testing. These methods generally rely on the conversion of a uniaxial input load from the test equipment (using a uniaxial drop tower or shaker) into a multiaxial load when resolved in the reference frame of the test article (mounted on a skewed fixture). Skewed fixture design is presented and recommendations for conducting skewed angle drop testing are introduced based on local measurements along the skewed face of the fixture to accurately monitor the impact event. Characterization tests were performed with a skewed fixture, at simultaneous acceleration loads from 500 to 3,000 g in two (in-plane and out-of-plane) directions, while meeting standard time domain tolerances. Upon experimental characterization, drop shock durability tests were conducted on a printed circuit assembly (PCA). Mean drops-to-failure were measured and quantified with Weibull statistics. Dominant solder joint failure modes were identified via failure analysis. Prior work on inclined angle impact testing is limited, and the majority of solder joint interconnect level fatigue studies are conducted considering perpendicular loading normal the circuit card. Low-cycle fatigue curves are generated based on plastic strain and plastic work density within the solder joint. A multiscale nonlinear finite element model is used to relate board-level flexure to solder joint interconnect level plastic strain. A high strain rate solder constitutive model allows for accurate modeling of solder plasticity resulting from high-impact drop shock. Fatigue parameters are computed from the Coffin-Manson relation and Palmgren-Miner damage accumulation. This work serves to apply established low-cycle fatigue methods for conventional drop shock loading (impact normal to circuit card) to non-perpendicular loading with a skewed fixture.

Improved equivalent circuit for twin slot terahertz receivers

Series-fed coplanar waveguide embedding circuits are being developed for terahertz mixers using, in particular, submicron-sized superconducting devices, such as hot electron bolometers as the nonlinear element. Although these mixers show promising performance, they usually also show a considerable downward shift in the center frequency, when compared with simulations obtained by using simplified models. This makes it very difficult to design low-noise mixers for a given THz frequency. This shiftis principally caused by parasitics due to the extremely small details (in terms of wavelength) of the device, and by the electrical properties of the RF choke filter in the DC/IF line. In this paper, we present an improved equivalent network model of such mixer circuits which agrees with measured results at THz frequencies and we propose a new set of THz bolometric mixers that have been fabricated and are currently being tested.

A general numerical analysis program for the superconducting quasiparticle mixer

A user-oriented computer program SISCAP (SIS Computer Analysis Program) for analyzing SIS mixers is described. The program allows arbitrary impedance terminations to be specified at all LO harmonics and sideband frequencies. It is therefore able to treat a much more general class of SIS mixers than the widely used three-frequency analysis, for which the harmonics are assumed to be short-circuited. An additional program, GETCHI, provides the necessary input data to program SISCAP. The SISCAP program performs a nonlinear analysis to determine the SIS junction voltage waveform produced by the local oscillator. The quantum theory of mixing is used in its most general form, treating the large signal properties of the mixer in the time domain. A small signal linear analysis is then used to find the conversion loss and port impedances. The noise analysis includes thermal noise from the termination resistances and shot noise from the periodic LO current. Quantum noise is not considered. Many aspects of the program have been adequately verified and found accurate.

Light induced ion migration studies in perovskite solar cell using nonlinear impedance spectroscopy

Complex interactions between mobile ions and charge carriers in perovskite solar cells (PSCs) make it challenging to fully understand their dynamic interplay. Exposure to light further complicates these interactions, altering the system’s dynamics and inducing nonlinear effects that lead to changes in the J−V curve. Understanding these effects is crucial for improving the operational stability of PSCs. Impedance spectroscopy (IS) is a powerful technique for evaluating relaxation processes in the frequency domain; however, it is limited in capturing nonlinear contributions. Here, in this work, nonlinear impedance spectroscopy (NLIS) is employed to analyze the higher harmonic response to AC perturbation, both in the dark and after short-term light exposure. A shift in the low-frequency (LF) higher harmonic peak is observed after open-circuit light exposure, attributed to an altered electric field suggesting ion re-distribution, whereas closed-circuit exposure shows no LF shift, indicating minimal ion movement. Additionally, light exposure reduces higher-order admittance, more notably in open-circuit conditions, suggesting decreased recombination. Temperature-dependent analysis was conducted to characterize the activation energy of migrating species, identifying iodide as the dominant migrating ion.

Nonlinear Anti-(Parity-Time) Symmetric Dimer

In the present work we propose a nonlinear anti- P T -symmetric dimer, that at the linear level has been experimentally created in the realm of electric circuit resonators. We find four families of solutions, the so-called upper and lower branches, both in a symmetric and in an asymmetric (symmetry-broken) form. We unveil analytically and confirm numerically the critical thresholds for the existence of such branches and explore the bifurcations (such as saddle-node ones) that delimit their existence, as well as transcritical ones that lead to their potential exchange of stability. We find that out of the four relevant branches, only one, the upper symmetric branch, corresponds to a spectrally and dynamically robust solution. We subsequently leverage detailed direct numerical computations in order to explore the dynamics of the different states, corroborating our spectral analysis results.

Low-latency quantum control using AI algorithms on cryogenic microelectronics platforms

Superconducting quantum computers are a particular technology that involve the realization of qubits by means of LC circuits with a Josephson junction. As shown in Fig. 1, this latter addition has the effect of introducing a nonlinearity (anharmonicity) that makes the frequency spacing between each energy level non-uniform. This is a desired effect for separating the two lowest levels, used for computation, from the higher ones, that are theoretically infinite and which are not desired to be used.

Electrical self-calibration of nonideal bolometers

An analytical method for determining the absorbed energy calibration of an IR bolometer from purely electrical measurements is presented. The technique is targeted at detectors with purely electrical nonlinearities. It is shown that the responsivity can be derived from the I-V plot if the limiting high-frequency impedance is measured. The electrical nonlinearity is then the difference between the impedance and the dc resistance. The model is used for designing a circuit for measuring the relative impedance parameters. The results are applicable to studies of IR sources and the detection of energy pulses with bolometers.

Instability Issue of Paralleled Dies in an SiC Power Module in Solid-State Circuit Breaker Applications

Paralleled dies in a power module could have instability issues during high current switching transients. Here, the instability is caused by the differential-mode oscillation among paralleled MOSFETs. Conventional analyses of paralleled MOSFETs’ stability are normally limited to a single operating point, which ignores the influences of the switching trajectory and nonlinear device parameters on stability. This article reveals that the switching trajectory can significantly influence parallel stability. The analysis is improved by solving eigenvalues of state-space modeling system matrices of all operating points that the switching trajectory goes through considering nonlinear device parameters. Higher voltage and current stresses result in greater real parts of complex eigenvalues, which explains why the paralleled MOSFETs are more unstable with higher voltage and current stresses. To improve stability in solid-state circuit breaker applications, we propose a method to manipulate the switching trajectory to avoid the unstable region where the conventional hard switching trajectory normally goes through. Experimental results show that the turn- off current capability can be increased from ~five times of rated current with the gate oscillation using the conventional turn- off trajectory to ~ten times of rated current without the gate oscillation using the optimal turn- off trajectory.

Nonlinear Optical Properties of Organic and Polymeric Thin Film Materials of Potential for Microgravity Processing Studies

In this paper, we will take a closer look at the state of the art of polydiacetylene, and metal-free phthalocyanine films, in view of the microgravity impact on their optical properties, their nonlinear optical properties and their potential advantages for integrated optics. These materials have many attractive features with regard to their use in integrated optical circuits and optical switching. Thin films of these materials processed in microgravity environment show enhanced optical quality and better molecular alignment than those processed in unit gravity. Our studies of these materials indicate that microgravity can play a major role in integrated optics technology. Polydiacetylene films are produced by UV irradiation of monomer solution through an optical window. This novel technique of forming polydiacetylene thin films has been modified for constructing sophisticated micro-structure integrated optical patterns using a pre-programmed UV-Laser beam. Wave guiding through these thin films by the prism coupler technique has been demonstrated. The third order nonlinear parameters of these films have been evaluated. Metal-free phthalocyanine films of good optical quality are processed in our laboratories by vapor deposition technique. Initial studies on these films indicate that they have excellent chemical, laser, and environmental stability. They have large nonlinear optical parameters and show intrinsic optical bistability. This bistability is essential for optical logic gates and optical switching applications. Waveguiding and device making investigations of these materials are underway.

A Novel Spatial-Temporal Variational Quantum Circuit to Enable Deep Learning on NISQ Devices

Quantum computing presents a promising approach for machine learning with its capability for extremely parallel computation in high-dimension through superposition and entanglement. Despite its potential, existing quantum learning algorithms, such as Variational Quantum Circuits (VQCs), face challenges in handling more complex datasets, particularly those that are not linearly separable. What’s more, it encounters the deployability issue, making the learning models suffer a drastic accuracy drop after deploying them to the actual quantum devices. To overcome these limitations, this paper proposes a novel spatial-temporal design, namely “ST-VQC”, to integrate nonlinearity in quantum learning and improve the robustness of the learning model to noise. Specifically, ST-VQC can extract spatial features via a novel block-based encoding quantum sub-circuit coupled with a layer-wise computation quantum sub-circuit to enable temporal-wise deep learning. Additionally, a SWAP-Free physical circuit design is devised to improve robustness. These designs bring a number of hyperparameters. After a systematic analysis of the design space for each design component, an automated optimization framework is proposed to generate the ST-VQC quantum circuit. The proposed ST-VQC has been evaluated on two IBM quantum processors, ibm-cairo with 27 qubits and ibmq-lima with 7 qubits to assess its effectiveness. The results of the evaluation on the standard dataset for binary classification show that ST-VQC can achieve over 30% accuracy improvement compared with existing VQCs on actual quantum computers. Moreover, on a non-linear synthetic dataset, the STVQC outperforms a linear classifier by 27.9%, while the linear classifier using classical computing outperforms the existing VQC by 15.58%.

Current-Phase Relations of Superconducting PtSi Constriction Josephson Junctions

Here, we study the current-phase relations of superconductor–constriction–superconductor Josephson junctions made from platinum silicide thin films by fabricating dc-superconducting quantum interference devices incorporating pairs of junctions and measuring their magnetic-field-dependent electrical transport. By comparing the supercurrent interference patterns with numerical Ginzburg–Landau simulations, we extract the current-phase relations of individual junctions and quantify the degree of nonlinearity. These measurements show that while the constrictions themselves sustain substantial nonlinearity, the effect is moderated by the kinetic inductance of the device leads, which is an important consideration for practical superconducting circuit applications.

A Lyapunov-Based Generalized Dc-Side Controller Design for PV-Connected Systems

The objective of this paper is to realize a universal dc-side controller for photovoltaic (PV) systems where the control is agnostic to the downstream converter configuration. To achieve this, the downstream power converter and its controls are manipulated into an effective power control loop that is then cast into a generalized multi-loop design framework. On the dc side, a nonlinear small-signal model of the PV input is realized exclusively in terms of PV datasheet parameters (i.e., open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, and maximum power point). Finally, a linear controller is used to modulate the dc-side PV system with the generic downstream power controller. A Lyapunov candidate is proposed to analyze the stability of the interconnected system and provide a streamlined approach for the controller design. The proposed design is validated on a 1k VA experimental setup that interfaces a PV module to the grid.
