Single and multiple scattering contributions to circumsolar radiation

The contributions to the angular distribution of the almucantar radiance in the forward direction due to multiple scattering are compared to those due to single scattering. The contributions have been calculated by a computer code employing the Gauss-Seidel iterative approach to the solution of the radiative transfer equation for a plane parallel atmosphere composed of air molecules, aerosol particles, and ozone. The code is similar to that of Dave (1972) except in the construction of the source matrix. In the near-forward direction the multiple scattering contributions are significant for optical depths of the order of 0.4. The shape of the angular distribution of almucantar radiance to 10 degrees is less sensitive to multiple scattering.

An experimental study of multiple jet mixing

Measurements of an incompressible jet issuing from an array of rectangular lobes, equally spaced with their small dimensions in a line, both as a free jet, and as a confined jet, are carried out in three parts: (1) on a single rectangular free jet, (2) on the same jet in a multiple free jet configuration, and (3) on the same jet in a multiple jet configuration with confining surfaces (two parallel plates are symmetrically placed perpendicular to the long dimension of each lobe covering the entire flow field under consideration). In the case of a single rectangular free jet, the flow field of the jet is characterized by the presence of three distinct regions in the axial mean velocity decay and are referred to as: potential core region, two dimensional type region, and axisymmetric type region. In the case of a multiple free jet, the flow field for downstream distance X greater than 60D (D = width of a lobe) resembles that of a jet exiting from a two dimensional nozzle with its short dimension being the long dimension of the lobe.

A multiple p-n junction structure obtained from as-grown Czochralski silicon crystals by heat treatment - Application to solar cells

Multiple p-n junctions have been prepared in as-grown Czochralski p-type silicon through overcompensation near the oxygen periodic concentration maxima by oxygen thermal donors generated during heat treatment at 450 C. Application of the multiple p-n-junction configuration to photovoltaic energy conversion has been investigated. A new solar-cell structure based on multiple p-n-junctions was developed. Theoretical analysis showed that a significant increase in collection efficiency over the conventional solar cells can be achieved.

Asynchronous multiple-access channel capacity

The capacity region for the discrete memoryless multiple-access channel without time synchronization at the transmitters and receivers is shown to be the same as the known capacity region for the ordinary multiple-access channel. The proof utilizes time sharing of two optimal codes for the ordinary multiple-access channel and uses maximum likelihood decoding over shifts of the hypothesized transmitter words.

Role of multiple scattering in ozone profile retrieval from satellite measurements in the ultraviolet

The retrieval of the ozone profile from satellite ultraviolet measurements can be extended to greater depths when multiple scattering is taken into account. The sensitivity of the multiple-scattered wavelength radiances to geophysical variables are discussed and results of profile inversions of Nimbus 4 backscatter ultraviolet data for coincident ground-truth measurements with and without multiple scattering are presented.

Double-multiple streamtube model for Darrieus in turbines

An analytical model is proposed for calculating the rotor performance and aerodynamic blade forces for Darrieus wind turbines with curved blades. The method of analysis uses a multiple-streamtube model, divided into two parts: one modeling the upstream half-cycle of the rotor and the other, the downstream half-cycle. The upwind and downwind components of the induced velocities at each level of the rotor were obtained using the principle of two actuator disks in tandem. Variation of the induced velocities in the two parts of the rotor produces larger forces in the upstream zone and smaller forces in the downstream zone. Comparisons of the overall rotor performance with previous methods and field test data show the important improvement obtained with the present model. The calculations were made using the computer code CARDAA developed at IREQ. The double-multiple streamtube model presented has two major advantages: it requires a much shorter computer time than the three-dimensional vortex model and is more accurate than multiple-streamtube model in predicting the aerodynamic blade loads.

The effects of multiplicative motor noise on the optimal human operator model

The effects of a multiplicative motor noise model on the optimal-control human operator model were analyzed. A study of the interaction between multiplicative motor noise variance, plant dynamics, and predicted operator response behavior shows that, in general, an increase in motor noise variance produces a decrease in operator gain and a decrease in high-frequency remnant. An increase in multiplicative motor noise variance is also reflected by an increase in the effective motor time constant; in the absence of a cost penalty on commanded control, the motor time constant equals the motor noise variance.

Theoretical study of multiple equilibria in simple axisymmetric tropical circulations

The possibility that the asymmetric part of the atmospheric circulation can possess multiple equilibrium states is examined using a two-layer axisymmetric model involving balance equations on an equatorial beta plane. Mountains are excluded from consideration and a Newtonian cooling formulation represents thermal forcing. A temperature maximum at 25 deg N is selected to simulate summer conditions in the Northern Hemisphere. Steady-state solutions obtained are investigated for stability with regard to first and second y-mode perturbations. A single stable mode is found, together with two other quasi-stable states. Attention is given to numerically modeling multiple equilibria in symmetric circulations, and one steady-state is determined for the two-layer model. A model employing primitive equations with the Boussinesq approximation is also examined, and it also furnishes only one steady state. The reasons for the lack of multiple steady-states as derived by the models are discussed.

Advanced 30/20 GHz multiple beam antenna for future communications satellites

A multiple offset reflector system is being used to provide multiple fixed and scanning beams at 30 GHz by means of a polarization grid diplexer to separate two orthogonally polarized feed assemblies. Each feed assembly consists of multiple fixed and scanning beam feeds. The technology developments required for successful operation of this proposed system are presented. These technologies include: (1) an offset Cassegrain system for low sidelobe wide angle scan beams; (2) a diplexed beam forming network for overlapping low sidelobe beams; (3) a fast switching network for scanning beams; and (4) fabrication of precision feed components and large offset reflectors.

The subjective effect of multiple co-channel frequency modulated television interference

As the geostationary orbit/spectrum becomes saturated, there is a need for the ability to reuse frequency assignments. Protection ratios (the ratio of wanted signal power to interfering signal power at the receiver) play a key role in determining efficient frequency reuse plans. A knowledge of the manner in which multiple sources of co-channel interference combine is vital in determining protection ratio requirements such that suitable margin may be allocated for multiple interfering signals. Results of tests examining the subjective assessment of multiple co-channel frequency modulated television signals interfering with another frequency modulated TV system are presented.

Multiple transonic solutions and a new class of shock transitions in solar and stellar winds

The steady isothermal solar wind equations are shown to admit, under certain circumstances, mutliple transonic solutions when, for example, momentum deposition gives rise to multiplee critical points in the flow. These multiple solutions consist of a continuous solution and solutions which involve shock transitions between critical solutions. The ambiguity arising from the multiplicity of the solutions can be resolved by following the time evolution of a wind profile with one critical point. Results of the numerical integration of the time-dependent equations with momentum addition show that each of these multiple solutions is physically accessible and depends on the rate of change of momentum deposition. These results suggest that standing shocks are likely to be present in the inner solar wind flow.

Integrated-optical approaches to matrix multiplication

The solution of matrix equations is essential to carrying out a large variety of control algorithms and to reducing certain types of data such as the output of a multispectral sensor array. Optical techniques and, in particular, integrated-optical circuits (IOC's) can provide compact, low-power devices for performing the mitrix multiplications necessary for the solution of these problems. A specific IOC for performing vector-matrix multiplication and several approaches to the design of IOC's for matrix-matrix multiplication will be discussed.

Evaluating multiple coordinated windows for programming workstations

Programmers might benefit from larger screens with multiple windows or multiple screens, especially if convenient coordination among screens are arranged. Uses for multiple coordinated displays in a programmers workstation are explored. Initial efforts focus on the potential applications, a command language for coordinating the displays, and the psychological basis for effective utilization so as to avoid information overload. Subsequent efforts will be devoted to implementing the concepts and performing controlled psychologically oriented experiments to validate the hypotheses.

VLSI Architectures for the Multiplication of Integers Modulo a Fermat Number

Multiplication is central in the implementation of Fermat number transforms and other residue number algorithms. There is need for a good multiplication algorithm that can be realized easily on a very large scale integration (VLSI) chip. The Leibowitz multiplier is modified to realize multiplication in the ring of integers modulo a Fermat number. This new algorithm requires only a sequence of cyclic shifts and additions. The designs developed for this new multiplier are regular, simple, expandable, and, therefore, suitable for VLSI implementation.

Radiation exposure and performance of multiple burn LEO-GEO orbit transfer trajectories

Many potential strategies exist for the transfer of spacecraft from low Earth orbit (LEO) to geosynchronous (GEO) orbit. One strategy has generally been utilized, that being a single impulsive burn at perigee and a GEO insertion burn at apogee. Multiple burn strategies were discussed for orbit transfer vehicles (OTVs) but the transfer times and radiation exposure, particularly for potentially manned missions, were used as arguments against those options. Quantitative results concerning the trip time and radiation encountered by multiple burn orbit transfer missions in order to establish the feasibility of manned missions, the vulnerability of electronics, and the shielding requirements are presented. The performance of these multiple burn missions is quantified in terms of the payload and propellant variances from the minimum energy mission transfer. The missions analyzed varied from one to eight perigee burns and ranged from a high thrust, 1 g acceleration, cryogenic hydrogen-oxygen chemical prpulsion system to a continuous burn, 0.001 g acceleration, hydrogen fueled resistojet propulsion system with a trip time of 60 days.

Multiple muons of conventional and exotic origin in DUMAND

A first summary of results from a theoretical analysis, based on hadron - muon cascade calculations, that yield relative intensities of very high energy multiple muons originating from ultra high energy interactions initiated by primary protons and iron nuclei in the atmosphere, under consideration of normal as well as direct and exotic production channels is presented. Lateral density distributions and target diagrams will be presented which show that only very large detectors, such as DUMAND, will be able to record multiple muons of conventional origin reliably. This, however, is a prerequisite for any primary mass determination based on multiple muon data.

Input-output description of linear systems with multiple time-scales

It is pointed out that the study of systems evolving at multiple time-scales is simplified by studying reduced-order models of these systems valid at specific time-scales. The present investigation is concerned with an extension of results on the time-scale decomposition of autonomous systems to that of input-output systems. The results are employed to study conditions under which positive realness of a transfer function is preserved under singular perturbation. Attention is given to the perturbation theory for linear operators, the multiple time-scale structure of autonomous linear systems, the input-output description of two time-scale linear systems, the positive realness of two time-scale systems, and multiple time-scale linear systems.
