High energy efficient solid state laser sources

Investigations continue of diode-laser-pumped solid-state laser oscillators and nonlinear processes using them as sources. Diode laser array pumped Nd:YAG and Nd:glass lasers have been demonstrated. Theoretical studies of non-planar oscillators have been advanced, producing new designs which should be more resistant to feedback and offer better frequency stability. A monolithic, singly resonant Optical Parametric Oscillator in MgO:LiNbO3 has been operated.

Spatial Light Amplifier Modulators

Spatial light amplifier modulators (SLAM's) are conceptual devices that effect two-dimensional spatial modulation in optical computing and communication systems. Unlike current spatial light modulators, these provide gain. Optical processors incorporating SLAM's designed to operate in reflection or transmission mode. Each element of planar SLAM array is optical amplifier - surface-emitting diode laser. Array addressed electrically with ac modulating signals superimposed on dc bias currents supplied to lasers. SLAM device provides both desired modulation and enough optical gain to enable splitting of output signal into many optical fibers without excessive loss of power.

Far-field distributions of semiconductor phase-locked arrays with multiple contacts

Experimental results on far-field patterns of semiconductor laser arrays with multiple contacts are reported. It is found that, by tailoring the distribution of the currents through the array elements, narrow single-lobe patterns, which are more useful in most applications, can be obtained from arrays that usually operate in a double-lobe mode. A diffraction-limited 1.8 deg-wide far field pattern was obtained from a three-element array.

Qualification Testing of Laser Diode Pump Arrays for a Space-Based 2-micron Coherent Doppler Lidar

The 2-micron thulium and holmium-based lasers being considered as the transmitter source for space-based coherent Doppler lidar require high power laser diode pump arrays operating in a long pulse regime of about 1 msec. Operating laser diode arrays over such long pulses drastically impact their useful lifetime due to the excessive localized heating and substantial pulse-to-pulse thermal cycling of their active regions. This paper describes the long pulse performance of laser diode arrays and their critical thermal characteristics. A viable approach is then offered that allows for determining the optimum operational parameters leading to the maximum attainable lifetime.

Lightweight solar array blanket tooling, laser welding and cover process technology

A two phase technology investigation was performed to demonstrate effective methods for integrating 50 micrometer thin solar cells into ultralightweight module designs. During the first phase, innovative tooling was developed which allows lightweight blankets to be fabricated in a manufacturing environment with acceptable yields. During the second phase, the tooling was improved and the feasibility of laser processing of lightweight arrays was confirmed. The development of the cell/interconnect registration tool and interconnect bonding by laser welding is described.

Coupling coefficient of gain-guided lasers

An analytical model is presented for the coupling coefficient for two gain-guided coupled waveguides, e.g., semiconductor laser arrays. A common parabolic gain distribution is assumed for the lasers, and the effective dielectric constant distribution is approximated in terms of the bulk refraction index, wavelength, power filling factor, and the antiguiding factor. The fundamental mode is then formulated and used in an integral for the coupling coefficient. The dependence of the coefficient of various waveguide parameters is described.

Semiconductor lasers for space sensor applications

Despite their intrinsic power limitations, semiconductor laser diodes are essential for laser-based spaceborne sensor systems covering a wide spectral range, fulfilling such roles as pumping and injection-locking. They may also be used as direct sources in shorter-range operations. AlGaAs laser arrays have been developed for 810-nm band pumping in Nd:YAG lasers otherwise emitting at 1.064 nm. Additional roles include their use as low-power injection seeds, locking a solid-state laser into a specific desired wavelength.

A Breakthrough Propulsion Architecture for Interstellar Precursor Missions: Phase I Final Report

Our breakthrough propulsion architecture is an innovative way to take advantage of kilometer-scale, multi-hundred megawatt, space-based, phased-array lasers to enable rapid transportation throughout the solar system. In this architecture, the laser would beam power over distances of up to 40 AU increasing the available power density relative to solar insolation by two orders of magnitude. The receiving vehicle would have a photovoltaic array with cells tuned to the laser frequency that outputs a voltage of 6 kV to directly-drive a lithium-fueled gridded ion thruster system at an ultra-high specific impulse of 40,000 s. Such a system could enable final spacecraft speeds of greater than 40 AU/year, potentially enabling missions to the solar gravity lens focus at 550 AU in less than 15 years. This is the propulsion architecture of the 22nd century.

Control of mutual phase locking of monolithically integrated semiconductor lasers

The degree of phase locking between the individual laser apertures is the major issue in phase-locked laser arrays. A description is presented of a series of experiments in which the mutual coherence of two laser apertures is characterized by measuring the visibility of the far-field interference fringes. Attention is given to an approach which makes it possible to control continuously the degree of coherence by means of a separate contact configuration. An investigation was conducted of the far-field radiation patterns of pairs of lasers obtained under various conditions. The results of the present study demonstrate the feasibility of controlling the mutual phase locking between semiconductor lasers by varying the gain distribution between their pumped stripes.

Characterization of Structural Vibration and Acoustic Radiation with a Beam-Array Doppler Vibrometer

This paper discusses the operational principles of an assembly of two opto-electronic modules with their configurations based on a Laser-Array Doppler Vibrometer (LADV) and a Shack-Hartmann Wavefront Sensor (SHWFS). Both sensors can operate concurrently providing complementary data. While the SHWFS is a well-established system that enables low-bandwidth spatio-temporal characterization of aerodynamic turbulence, the LADV technology allows real-time detection of structural vibrations and associated acoustic radiation fields. Practical examples are shown of the instruments’ capabilities, focusing on the ability to simultaneously capture, visualize and quantitatively characterize full-field non-stationary structural dynamics and unsteady sound fields or transient flow fields around ground test facility airframe models or other structures of interest. The parallel multi-channel architecture of the LADV system enables synchronous detection and temporal correlation of indicators related to the spatio-temporal vibration of the structure under inspection. This unique feature is essential for real time detection and categorization of the structural and acoustic dynamics of transient events. For the present study, the LADV data have been successfully compared with measurements obtained with the SHWFS in the wake of a subsonic scale-model airfoil. The ability of the LADV-SHWFS coupled measurements to perform real time non-intrusive evaluation and characterization of dynamic processes at operationally relevant bandwidths should provide a deeper insight into the complex structural dynamics that contribute to radiated sound fields.

Phase retrieval and reconstruction of coherent synthesis by genetic algorithm

Abstract In the context of diffractive optics, phase retrieval is a heavily investigated process of recreating an entire complex electric field from partial amplitude-only information through iterative algorithms. However, existing methods can fall into local minima during reconstructions or struggle to recover unusual and novel electric field distributions. We present a numerical method based on a global-optimization genetic algorithm that reconstructs non-trivial electric field distributions from single diffracted intensity distributions. Diffraction and propagation of the optical fields over arbitrary distances is modeled through implementation of the angular spectrum technique. Additionally, a coherently-locked laser array system is used as an experimental case-study demonstrating 0.09 π phase reconstruction accuracy of initial laser parameters from single intensity images.

Monolithic two-dimensional surface-emitting arrays of GaAs/AlGaAs diode lasers

Monolithic two-dimensional arrays of GaAs/AlGaAs diode lasers with light emission normal to the surface have been obtained by fabricating edge-emitting quantum-well lasers coupled with external mirrors that deflect the radiation from the laser facets by 90 degrees. Linear arrays of GaAs/AlGaAs devices in which one of the laser facets was cleaved while the other facet and an adjacent 45 degree deflector were formed by ion-beam-assisted etching (IBAE) have been reported. For the arrays reported in this section, IBAE was used to form all of the laser facets and the deflecting mirrors. A mass transport process of the type employed to fabricate two-dimensional arrays of GaInAsP/InP lasers coupled with deflecting mirrors is not known for AlGaAs.

Development of Efficient Mid-IR Interband Cascade Lasers for Chemical Sensing

Significant progress has been made: Above room temperature (up to 350K) pulsed operation has been demonstrated. CW operation temperature has been raised up to 237 K. DFB IC lasers have been applied for the detection of trace gases such as CH4, HCl, and H2CO. Devices have been operated continuously over several hundred hours without degradation. Main challenge remains for many potential applications of ICLs. CW operation at room temperature and above with significant output powers. There is still significant room for improvement: Laser design and material quality - many parameters have not been optimized. Device fabrication and thermal management (passivation, better mounting, etc.). Significantly higher output power can be achieved with laser arrays.

Power scaling of diode-pumped neodymium yttrium aluminum borate laser

Preliminary results are presented of the efficient diode-pumped operation of a neodymium yttrium aluminum borate (NYAB) laser at 531.5 nm using two 1-W diode-laser arrays for the pump. With 1380 mW of CW power incident on the crystal, as much as 51 mW of 532.5-nm laser radiation was obtained with the unoptimized cavity. The corresponding optical-to-optical conversion efficiency was 3.7 percent. A plot of the output 531.5 nm vs incident 807 nm pump power is shown. The crystal output power was critically dependent on the rotational and translational adjustment of the NYAB crystal inside the cavity. It is suggested that a crystal cut at the exact phase matching angle, placed in a cavity with proper optimal reflection and transmission mirror coatings, and pumped at proper wavelength can result in higher output power. Thus, the NYAB output power approaches that of a CW intracavity frequency doubled Nd:YAG laser.

Single contact tailored gain phased array of semiconductor lasers

A single contact tailored gain-guided array is demonstrated in which the gain profile across the array is made strongly asymmetric by varying the width of the contact stripes. A proton isolated arary of six (GaAl)As lasers with 5-micron separations and widths varying linearly between 3 and 8 microns had a single lobed far field 2 deg wide, close to the diffraction limit for a single supermode. Fabrication of this device is simple, and suited to large-scale processing techniques. It is also shown that in such an asymmetric gain-guided array the fundamental mode is favored over higher order modes, and that higher order modes can have single lobed far-field patterns differing only slightly from that of the fundamental.
