Compact, low power, high resolution ADC per pixel for large area pixel detectors

A compact ADC circuit can include one or more comparators, and a serial DAC (Digital-to-Analog) circuit that provides a signal to the comparator (or comparators). In addition, the ADC circuit can include a serial DAC redistribution sequencer that can provide a plurality of signals as input to the serial DAC circuit and is subject to a redistribution cycle and which receives as input a signal from a data multiplexer whose input connects electronically to an output of the comparator. The circuit can further include an ADC code register that provides an ADC output that connects electronically to the output of the comparator and the input to the data multiplexer. Shared logic circuitry for sharing common logic between pixels can be included, wherein the shared logic circuitry connects electronically to the data multiplexer and the ADC code register, wherein the shared logic circuitry promotes area and power savings for the pixel detector circuit.

Walking on the dark side: Anthropogenic factors limit suitable habitat for gray wolf ( Canis lupus ) in a large natural area covering Belarus and Ukraine

Due to successful conservation initiatives and legislations, the grey wolf (Canis lupus) is recolonising its historic range in Europe. However, wolves have never been extirpated across large areas in Eastern Europe but are often constrained to remote and inaccessible places due to centuries of persecution. This study aimed to identify the potentially suitable wolf habitats in Polesia, a massive cross-border lowland region extending over southern Belarus and northern Ukraine, which are often neglected in large carnivore studies at the continental scale. We hypothesized that anthropogenic rather than environmental factors govern wolf habitat suitability. We used a dataset of 4191 GPS locations obtained from radio-collared wolves (n = 26) and confirmed observations (n = 231) during 2014–2021 and applied maximum entropy method to estimate relative habitat suitability for wolves in Polesia. Artificial light at night (ALAN), proportion of cropland and tree cover were the most important factors affecting wolf habitat suitability. Road densities contributed poorly to predicting habitat suitability for wolves. Our models predicted a quarter of Polesia as suitable habitat and revealed priority areas connecting the important source populations in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone in the east and the Bialowieza Forest in the west and thus essential for long-term wolf conservation. Our results provide the bases for effective, long-term wolf monitoring and management programs in both Belarus and Ukraine. However, national and transboundary wolf management in Polesia has been extremely challenging since 2022 due to the ongoing war and subsequent habitat degradation in this part of Europe.

Substrate-embedded metal meshes for ITO-free organic light emitting diodes

Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) have great potential for use in large-area display and lighting applications, but their widespread adoption for large areas is hindered by the high cost and insufficient performance of indium tin oxide (ITO) anodes. In this study, we introduce an alternative anode material – a silver mesh embedded in glass – to facilitate production of large-area OLEDs. We present a facile, scalable manufacturing technique to create high aspect ratio micromeshes embedded in glass to provide the planar geometry needed for OLED layers. Our phosphorescent green OLEDs achieve a current efficiency of 51.4 cd/A at 1000 cd/m 2 and reach a slightly higher external quantum efficiency compared to a standard ITO/glass reference sample. Notably, these advancements are achieved without any impact on the viewing angle of the OLEDs. These findings represent a promising advancement towards ITO-free, high-efficiency OLEDs for various high performance, large-area applications, such as lighting and displays.

Readout of Large Capacitance SiPMs by Weak Coupling to Charge Sensitive Amplifier

Large area and large capacitance silicon photomultiplier (SiPM) arrays are employed to collect scintillation light in noble liquid time projection chambers (TPC) such as DarkSide, nEXO, MEGII, protoDUNE and DUNE. Light readout using ASICs designed for operation in noble liquids is a solution for large meter-scale photon detectors. However, conventional readout requires a high voltage decoupling capacitor larger than SiPM capacitance (in the range of tens of nF) to achieve full charge transfer to the preamplifier. Here, we demonstrate a readout concept by weakly coupling (via a capacitor lower by an order of magnitude than SiPM capacitance) to a charge sensitive amplifier, LArASIC in this case, without any loss in the signal to noise ratio (S/N). The single-photoelectron detection, signal-to-noise ratio, timing resolution, and coincidence detection are experimentally characterized.

Diamond nanostructures with large surface area and method of producing the same

A method for forming diamond nanostructures with large specific area can include forming porous diamond nanostructures by means of selectively etching sp2-bonded carbon and partially removing sp3-bonded carbon in nanocrystalline diamond (NCD) and ultrananocrystalline diamond (UNCD® diamond). The diamond nanostructures achieved from the disclosed method can include a long shaft surrounded by a school of barbs. The nanostructure can provide a significantly larger surface area than diamond without such a nanostructure and its fabrication provides relative ease of manufacture compared to traditional techniques.

Scalable fabrication and coating methods for perovskite solar cells and solar modules

Since the report in 2012 of a solid-state perovskite solar cell (PSC) with a power-conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.7% and a stability of 500 h, intensive efforts have been made to increase the certified PCE, reaching 25.2% in 2019. The PCE of PSCs now exceeds that of conventional thin-film solar-cell technologies, and the rate at which this increase has been achieved is unprecedented in the history of photovoltaics. Moreover, the development of moisture-stable and heat-stable materials has increased the stability of PSCs. Small-area devices (<1 cm2) are typically fabricated using a spin-coating method; however, this approach may not be suitable for the preparation of the large-area (>100 cm2) substrates required for commercialization. Thus, materials and methods need to be developed for coating large-area PSCs. In this Review, we discuss solution-based and vapour-phase coating methods for the fabrication of large-area perovskite films, examine the progress in performance and the parameters affecting the properties of large-area coatings, and provide an overview of the methodologies for achieving high-efficiency perovskite solar modules.

Large-mode-area optical fibers and optical fiber amplifiers in the eye-safe regime

The present technology provides large mode area optical fibers engineered to have normal dispersion around 1600 nm, enabling high power Raman amplification at eye safer wavelengths. The fibers can have a main core and one or more side cores disposed relative to the main core so that modes of the main core and the one or more side cores hybridize into supermodes with modified dispersion.
