A finite element study of incompressible flows past oscillating cylinders and aerofoils

We present our numerical results for certain unsteady flows past oscillating cylinders and aerofoils. The computations are based on the stabilized space-time finite element formulation. The implicit equation systems resulting from the space-time finite element discretizations are solved using iterative solution techniques. One of the problems studied is flow past a cylinder which is forced to oscillate in the horizontal direction. In this case we observe a change from an unsymmetric mode of vortex shedding to a symmetric one. An extensive study was carried out for the case in which a cylinder is mounted on lightly damped springs and allowed to oscillate in the vertical direction. In this case the motion of the cylinder needs to be determined as part of the solution, and under certain conditions this motion changes the vortex-shedding pattern of the flow field significantly. This nonlinear fluid-structure interaction exhibits certain interesting behavior such as 'lock-in' and 'hysteresis', which are in good agreement with the laboratory experiments carried out by other researchers in the past. Preliminary results for flow past a pitching aerofoil are also presented.

A multiple-scale turbulence model for incompressible flow

A multiple-scale eddy viscosity model is described in this paper. This model splits the energy spectrum into a high wave number regime and a low wave number regime. Dividing the energy spectrum into multiple regimes simplistically emulates the cascade of energy through the turbulence spectrum. The constraints on the model coefficients are determined by examining decaying turbulence and homogeneous turbulence. A direct link between the partitioned energies and the energy transfer process is established through the coefficients. This new model has been calibrated and tested for boundary-free turbulent shear flows. Calculations of mean and turbulent properties show good agreement with experimental data for two mixing layers, a plane jet and a round jet.

Unsteady incompressible flow computations with the finite-element method

While the methods thus far developed for vorticity-streamfunction formulation are thus far restricted to 2D flows, they are applicable to both viscous and inviscid flows, including problems with multiply-connected domains. The present solution techniques for the velocity-pressure formulation can be extended to 3D problems. Attention is given to (1) two multistep formulations that use piecewise bilinear functions for the velocity and piecewise constant functions for the pressure, and (2) a novel multistep velocity-pressure formulation based on the equal-order interpolation of velocity and pressure.

Theoretical and Experimental Investigation of Random Gust Loads Part I : Aerodynamic Transfer Function of a Simple Wing Configuration in Incompressible Flow

Sinusoidally oscillating downwash and lift produced on a simple rigid airfoil were measured and compared with calculated values. Statistically stationary random downwash and the corresponding lift on a simple rigid airfoil were also measured and the transfer functions between their power spectra determined. The random experimental values are compared with theoretically approximated values. Limitations of the experimental technique and the need for more extensive experimental data are discussed.

Time-Dependent Simulation of Incompressible Flow in a Turbopump Using Overset Grid Approach

This paper reports the progress being made towards complete unsteady turbopump simulation capability by using overset grid systems. A computational model of a turbo-pump impeller is used as a test case for the performance evaluation of the MPI, hybrid MPI/Open-MP, and MLP versions of the INS3D code. Relative motion of the grid system for rotor-stator interaction was obtained by employing overset grid techniques. Unsteady computations for a turbo-pump, which contains 114 zones with 34.3 Million grid points, are performed on Origin 2000 systems at NASA Ames Research Center. The approach taken for these simulations, and the performance of the parallel versions of the code are presented.
